英国大本钟中英文介绍
The Great Bell of the clock at the north end of the Palace of Westminster in London, commonly known as Big Ben, is one of the most iconic symbols of the United Kingdom.
The name "Big Ben" actually refers to the Great Bell itself, but is often used to describe the clock tower as a whole. The tower was officially renamed the Elizabeth Tower in 2012, in honor of Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee.
Big Ben first rang out across London on July 11, 1859, and has been keeping time ever since. The Great Bell weighs a massive 13.5 tons and strikes the hour with a deep and resonant tone that can be heard up to 5 miles away. The
clock faces on the tower are also impressive, each measuring over 23 feet in diameter and featuring Roman numerals that are over 2 feet tall.
The clock mechanism itself is a marvel of Victorian engineering, designed by Edmund Beckett Denison and George Airy. It is powered by a massive pendulum that swings once
every two seconds and is accurate to within a few seconds per day. The clock's hands are driven by a system of weights and gears, and are adjusted regularly to ensure precise timekeeping.
In addition to its timekeeping duties, Big Ben has also become a symbol of resilience and continuity. It has continued to chime through wars, bombings, and even major renovations, serving as a constant reminder of the strength and endurance of the British people. The sound of Big Ben ringing out has become synonymous with London itself, and
is a beloved part of the city's cultural heritage.
Visitors to London can often be seen gathered around the base of the Elizabeth Tower, taking photos and
listening to the chimes of Big Ben. The tower is not open to the public, but guided tours of the Palace of Westminster are available, offering a glimpse into the history and significance of this iconic landmark. Whether heard from afar or up close, the sound of Big Ben ringing out is sure to evoke a sense of awe and admiration for this timeless symbol of British history.。
