Good health is the most valuable thing a person can have but one cannot take good health for granted. It is important to remember that the body needs proper care in order to be healthy. There are three things that a person can do to help stay healthy, eating right food, getting enough sleep, and exercising regularly.
Proper nutrition(营养) is important for good health. Your body cannot work well unless it rec eives the proper kind “fuel”. Don’t eat too much food with lots of sugar and fat. Eat plenty of foods hi gh in protein(蛋白质), like meat, fish, eggs and nuts. Vegetables and fruits are very important because they provide necessary vitamins and minerals. Howe ver, don’t overeat. It is not helpful to be overweight.
Getting the proper amount of sleep is also important. If you don’t get enough sleep, you feel tired and easily get angry. You have no energy. Over a long period of time a little amount of sleep may even result in a change of personality(人的个性). Be sure to allow yourself from seven to nine hours of sleep each day. If you do, your body will feel strong and refreshed, and your mind will be sharp.
Finally, get plenty of exercise. Exercise makes the body stronger, strengthens the muscles(肌肉), and prevents you from gaining weight. It also improves your heart and lungs. If you follow a regular exercise program, you will probably increase your life-span(寿命). Any kind of exercise is good. Most sports are good for keeping the body in good shape: basketball, swimming, bicycling, running and so on. Sports are not only good for your body, but they are enjoyable and interesting, too.
If everybody were to eat the right foods, get plenty of sleep and exercise regularly, the world would be a happier and healthier place. We would all live to be much older and wiser.

As a student, you must be excited to know something about American school students. In fact, just like in China, in the United States, high school is usually divided into two periods, the first two or three years are called “junior high school” and the other is “senior high school”.
In China, children enjoy free education of nine years, but in the United States, the students enjoy free education until they are 18 years old. As a result of the free education system, American children have little difficulty in going to senior high school.
American high school students can take part in a lot of activities outside of the classroom. The activities are organized by the school, such as joining a music group or a sports team. Certainly, just like us students in China, American students have to work hard in order to get good marks if they want to go to a good university. They take classes in all kinds of subjects all through
the high school period. And those who come out with low marks at the end of a school year and who should repeat a grade are often allowed to go on to the next grade.
In American high schools, there is fighting or hurting or other kinds of bad behaviors. So children who want to go to university are often sent to suburban (郊区的) high schools, where most students want to go to university and the atmosphere (氛围) is quite different.
64. Activities outside of the classroom refer to __________.
A. what a music group or a sports team do
B. what the students learn in extra classes
C. what the students do after class in school
D. what the teachers do after class for the students
65. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. The time of free education in China is longer than that in America.
B. Those who get good marks can go to a good university.
C. American students can take all kinds of subjects during the high school period.
D. They can be allowed to join the next grade even if they fail the school-year exam.
66. The writer of the passage tells us the truth that ________.
A. the atmosphere in high schools is quite different from that in a university
B. none of the schools in cities are good for learning
C. suburban high schools are good places for learning
D. all the American students want to go to university
D
There are two types of people in the world. Although they have equal degree of health and wealth and other comforts of life, one becomes happy, the other becomes unhappy. This results from the different ways in which they consider things, persons, events and the resulting effects upon their minds.
People who are to be happy fix their attention on the convenience of things: the pleasant parts of conversation, the well prepared dishes, the goodness of the wine, the fine weather. They enjoy all the cheerful things. Those who are to be unhappy think and speak only of the opposite things. Therefore, they are continually dissatisfied. By their words, they sour the pleasure of society, offend (hurt) many people, and make themselves unwelcome everywhere. If this state of mind is
founded in nature, such unhappy person would be the more to be shown sympathy. The intention(意图) of criticizing(批评) and being disliked is perhaps taken up by imitation(模仿). It grows into a habit, unknown to its owners. The habit may be strong, but it may be cured when those who have it realize its bad effects on their interests and tastes. I hope this little warning may be of service to them, and help them change this habit.
Although in fact it is chiefly an act of the imagination, it has serious results in life since it brings on deep sorrow and bad luck. Those people hurt many others. Nobody loves them, and no one treats them with more than the most common politeness and respect. This often puts them in a bad mood and draws them into arguments. If they want to get some advantages in social position or money, nobody wishes them success. Nor will anyone start a step of speaking a word to favor their hopes. If they bring on themselves public objections(反对), no one will defend or excuse them, and many will join to criticize their wrong doings. These should change this bad habit and be pleased with what is pleasing, without worrying needlessly about themselves and others. If they do not, it will be good for others to avoid any contact with them. Otherwise, it can be disagreeable and sometimes very inconvenient, especially when one becomes mixed up in their quarrels.
67. People who are unhappy ________ .
A. always see the unpleasant side of certain things
B. are usually born with the criticizing qualities.
C. usually misunderstand what others think or say
D. always dislike and quarrel with happy people
68. The phrase “sour the pleasure of society” most nearly means “________”.
A. have a good taste with social life
B. tend to scold others openly
C. make others unhappy
D. enjoy the pleasure of life
69. We can conclude from the passage that ________ .
A. we should pity all such unhappy people
B. people can get rid of the habit of unhappiness
C. such unhappy people are dangerous to social life
D. unhappy people can not understand happy person
70. If such unhappy person insists on keeping the habit, the author suggests people should ________.
A. quarrel with them until they realize it
B. show no respect and politeness to them
C. help them to recognize the bad effects
D. prevent any communication with them

We are all called upon to make a speech at some point in life, but most of us don’t do a very good job. This article gives some suggestions on how to give an effective speech.
So, you have to give a speech and you’re terrified. You get nervous, you forget what you want to say, you stumble over words, you talk too long and you bore your audience. Later you think, “Thank goodness, it’s over. I’m just no good at public speaking. I hope I never have to do that again.”
Cheer up! It doesn’t have to be that bad. Here are some simple steps to take the pain out of speech making. Ask yourself the purpose of your speech. What is the occasion? Why are you speaking? Then, gather as many facts as you can on your subject. Spend plenty of time doing your research. Then spend plenty of time organizing your material so that your speech is clear and easy to follow. Use as many examples as possible and use pictures, charts and graphs if they help you make your points clearer. Never forget your audience. Don’t talk over their heads and don’t talk down to them. Treat your audience with respect. They will appreciate your thought- fulness.
Just remember: Be prepared. Know your subject, your audience and the occasion. Be brief. Say what you have to say and then stop. And be yourself. Let your personality come through so that you make person-to-person contact with your audience.
If you follow these simple steps, you’ll see that you don’t have to be afraid of public speaking. In fact, you may find the experience so enjoyable that you volunteer to make more speeches! You’re not conv inced yet. Give it a try and see what happens.
