The Chinese word "Shanzhai" means a small mountain village, but now it becomes an accepted name for fakes(假货) after "Shanzhai cell phones" produced by small workshops in southern China, became popular in the mainland market over the past few years.
Besides " Shanzhai" electronic products, there are "Shanzhai" movies, "Shanzhai" stars and even a "Shanzhai" Spring Festival Gala, a copy of the 25-year-old traditional show presented by CCTV on Chinese Lunar New Year's Eve.
"Shanzhai" has become a culture of its own, symbolizing anything that imitates something famous. The phenomenon has caused a public debate over whether it is healthy or sick being a copycat.
In southwestern China's Chongqing Municipality, a "Shanzhai"-version"Bird’s Nest" woven by farmers with bamboo attracts wide attention and the "Shanzhai"-version "Water Cube" is popular with tourists too. Both are copies of the famous Olympics buildings in Beijing.
Xie Xizhang, a literature critic, said that taking the "Shanzhai" Gala as an example, when the traditional CCTV program becomes less and less attractive to the audience, the "Shanzhai" version appears naturally to attract people.
"In spite of its poor techniques and operation, ‘Shanzhai’culture meets the psychological demands of common people and could be a comfort to their minds," Xie said.
Tian Huiqun, a professor at Beijing Normal University, said that "Shanzhai" culture never copies classic things, only trendy products. In that sense, it's like a computer virus, multiplying without meaning.
Though controversial, "Shanzhai" culture is becoming a widely accepted phenomenon.
"To the mainstream culture, the rise of ‘Shanzhai' culture is a challenge as well as a motivation(动力), " said Xie.
Tian said different kinds of cultures developing together is an ideal situation and it is for the public to choose.

My senior year in high school was one of the best years of my life. I had a lot of encouragement and the teachers really cared about their students. I was an office assistant, which helped me to be part of all the popular groups. When you work in the office, everyone comes to you for help, including the teachers whom I had a good relationship with. When trouble came my way, they would stand up for me.
I met Mr. Helms, the bus driver at Forrest High School. My parents sent me there for one year before the new high school was built. I would sit on the front seat of the bus just to talk with him. He was an old guy, but he was cool. I was the first student to enter Edward H. White High School. My bus driver friend made sure of it.
He told all of us to meet him at the bus stop an hour early and he would take us to our new high school. He told me I would be the first student to enter it. He was good for his word. He made everyone else wait until I went through the front door. I felt really great to be treated that way.
Mr. Helms made a big influence to my life . He gave me wise advice and if I had always listened to him, I would have stayed out of trouble. He could see trouble coming and tried to warn
me, but being a stubborn(固执的) teenager, I did not always listen.
Sometimes I dream about those days. It feels just like I am back in high school. Senior high is the year for decisions. I wish I had made better ones. The choices I made that final year have affected and will affect me for the rest of my life. I would go right back to high school if I could and if I was asked what year I wanted to go to, I would choose the class of 1973, the year I graduated.

Homework can put you in a bad mood, and that might actually be a good thing. New research suggests that, in some cases, being too happy can hurt your performance on certain kinds of tasks. To test whether it is true, researchers performed two learning experiments with children.
The first experiment included 30 children, aged 10 and 11. Each child was given 20 problems in which a houselike shape was hidden inside a different, large image. The children had to find the small shape while sitting in a room. Either positive or sad classical music was played in the background.
As a measure of mood, the scientists asked the children to point to one of five faces, ranging from happy to sad. Children listening to the positive music tended to point to the smiling faces.
Children surrounded by sad music pointed instead to the frowns(皱眉). The researchers found that sad children took at least a second less to find the small shapes and also correctly found on average three or four more shapes.
In he second experiment, 61 children, aged 6 and 7, faced the same type of problems. They watched one of three scenes. One scene was happy. One was neutral(中立的). One was sad. And
just like in the first experiment, kids who felt sad or neutral performed better on the tests. They solved on average two or three more problems.
The researchers think that feeling down causes people more likely to fix their attention on a problem or difficult situation. However, other studies suggest that people who feel happy are better able to fix their attention on details. Some researches insist that the new studies are not perfect and still have flaws. It’s possible that the lively music in the first experime nt took children’ s attention away from their task of finding shapes.
While scientist continue to work on finding the answers, it still might be worth adapting your tasks for your mood.
29. What did the researchers want to find out in the experiments?
A.What determines success in children’ s study.
B.Whether too much homework influences children’ s moods.
C.Whether and how children’ s moods influence their performance.
D.How to train children to keep a happy mood.
30. What did the two experiments have in common?
A.Children were asked to find hidden shapes.
B.Children in a sad mood were considered much cleverer.
C.Children were divided into happy and sad groups.
D.Researchers used music to measure children’s moods.
31. The underlined word “flaws”in the fifth paragraph probably means “_____”.
A.advantages
B. faults
C. influences
D. fakes
32. How does the author respond to the new study?
A.He thinks highly of it.
B.He thinks it’s useful in certain aspects.
C.He worries that most people will question it.
