Finding Beauty Within
A dear friend sent me a letter and handmade card in the mail today. On
the outside of the card was a cutout picture of a hummingbird in mid-flight.
With its wings, it flew deep into a flower. Below it was a quote ( 引述) by
Russian writer Fyodor Dostoyevsky: "The world will be saved by beauty."
I smiled with both my face and heart when I saw it.
a hummingbird
Looking at it reminded me of all the beauty in this world. I thought about the beautiful green forested mountains of my home. I thought of the fields of summer wildflowers blessing the world with their colors. I thought of the blue oceans that stretched from horizon ( 地平线) to horizon.
I thought of the sunsets in the desert with their deep, rich reds and glorious ( 灿烂的) golds. I thought of all kinds of animals: green hummingbirds, white polar bears, red birds and gray wolves.
I thought of the silver moon smiling down from the sky surrounded by a sea of s tars.
Yet, I knew that it wasn't the beauty of any of those things that would save the world. It was instead the beauty of human souls ( 内心, 心灵) filled with light and love. It was these souls so
full of love for each other and for this world that would save our planet. It was this love working through people that would make this world truly beautiful.
My friend who sent me the card is one of these people. She, her husband and her family are going through so many struggles right now. Still, she continues to share her love and make this world a better place every single day. She continues to work to save our home by giving it the beauty of her soul. She continues to shine her light with her life. May we all do the same.
24.After getting the card, the author .
A.couldn't understand the quote on it
B.was reminded of all the beauty in the world
C.also wrote a letter and sent a card to his/her friend
D.called his/her friend right away to express his/her thanks
25.What does the author think would save the world?
A.Fighting against difficulties in life.
B.Seeing the natural beauty around us.
C.Filling the world with light and love.
D.Building relationships among people.
26.Which of the following is according to the passage?
A.The author's friend loves all kinds of animals.
B.The author's friend often shares beautiful things with him/her.
C.The author believed that any beautiful things would save the world.
D.The author received a card with a picture of a hummingbird from his/her friend.

Check out a book . While libraries still loan out (出借)books, you'll find it easier to get a copy of whatever you're looking for with a cooperative network of area libraries. By such networks, libraries share their books with each other through the use of delivery vehicles. Handwriting Brings Benefits
In a digital age, we almost never write things by hand. However, many studies have shown that this act has many benefits.
New brain research, led by researchers at Norwegian University of Science and Technology, proves the same: choosing handwriting over using a keyboard results in better learning and memory. "When you write your shopping list or lecture notes by hand, you simply remember the content ( 内 容 ) better afterwards," said Audrey van der Meer, author of the study.
The study used some equipment to record brain wave ( 波 ) activity. The participants ( 参 与者 ) included 12 young adults and 12 children. This is the first time that children have participated in such a study. Each subject was asked to write by hand and type on a keyboard while wearing a hood ( 风帽 ) with over 250 electrodes ( 电极 ). The sensors ( 传感器 ) in the electrodes are very sensitive and pick up the electrical activity that takes place in the brain. Each examination took 45 minutes per person.
The results showed that the brain in both young adults and children is much more active when writing by hand than when typing on a keyboard. According to Van der Meer, plenty of senses are activated by pressing a pen on paper, seeing the letters written and hearing the sound made while writing. These sense experiences build touch between different parts of the brain, opening the brain up for learning.
Van der Meer believes that the outcomes stress the importance of children being challenged to draw and write at an early age, especially at school. "Learning to write by hand is a bit slower process, but it's important for children to go through the tiring phrase of learning to write by hand," she said.
The hand movements used to form the shapes of letters are beneficial in several ways. "If you use a keyboard, you use the same movement for each letter. Writing by hand requires control of your fine motor ( 精细动作 ) skills and senses. It's important to put the brain in a learning state as often as possible," Van der Meer added. For example, you might use a keyboard to write an essay, but you should take notes by hand during a lecture.
31.What do we know about the study?
A .The study involved 250 participants altogether.
B .Typing on a keyboard helps you remember a lot of things.
C .All the participants have to take a 45 minutes' examination.
D .Learning to write by hand is a bit difficult but it is a fast process.

Whether it is for a special festival, to express thanks or to just let someone know that you care about them, giving gifts is a common custom. The purpose of giving gifts may be similar, but the tradition varies from country to country. A gift of respect in one place may be considered rude in another. Take a look at three gift-giving traditions.
India
If you are invited to someone's home in India, you should bring a small
gift, whether it's a box of chocolates or some flowers. Gifts shouldn't be
wrapped ( 包裹) in black or white colors, because they are considered unlucky.
Instead, use bright colors such as green, red or yellow. When giving money for any occasion, it should have an odd number ( 奇数) value. That's believed to bring good luck. Instead of receiving a gift with both hands, Indians generally only use their right hand because left hands are considered unclean.
Japan
For most Japanese, the ritual ( 礼节) of giving presents is more important than the gifts themselves. The correct way is to present or receive gifts with both hands. Every gift should be wrapped. That's because uncovered gifts are considered disrespectful. To show politeness and thanks, those who are receiving the gift may turn it down once or twice before finally accepting it. Gifts should be given in pairs, but four should be avoided just like in China. Lucky numbers also included eight. Eight is said to bring prosperity ( 兴旺) .
Native America
While it may be common for guests to prepare gifts for hosts, this is different in Native American communities. From weddings to birthday celebrations, guests are the ones who receive gifts. Gifts are usually homemade arts and crafts-made by hand to show love, respect and appreciation. 34.What is a common custom to express thanks or to show your caring about others?
35.In which country only use their right hands to receive gifts?
36.Why do gifts should be wrapped in Japan?
37.What are gifts like in Native America?
38.What is the passage mainly talking about?
