The origin of Valentine's Day情人节的由来
Valentine's Day originated in Rome. There are many versions of the legend, but the most romantic and credible are the following.

Legend has it that in the third Century, the ancient Rome had a tyrant called Claudius. Not far from the tyrant's palace stood a very beautiful temple where friar Valentin lived. Valentin was knowledgeable and virtuous. The Romans respected him very much. All the people, regardless of the rank or age, liked to gather around him and listen to his prayers in front of the burning flame of the altar.

Then Rome was at war and all the men of a certain age were required to join the Roman army, so a large number of citizens were forced to go to the battlefield. People complained a lot and Rome was shrouded in a long and sad lovesickness. Claudius also forbade marriage ceremonies and even forced those who were engaged to break off their marriages at once. In this way, many young men bid farewell to their lovers and went to the war in sorrow. The girls were also depressed because of the loss of their lovers. Valentine felt very sad about the tyranny of Claudius

Tyranny, however, cannot forbid love. One day, a couple quietly came to the temple and asked valentine to marry them. Deeply moved by their faithful love, Valentine risked his life to marry them in front of the sacred altar. After that he married many young people couples. Knowing this, Claudius flew into a rage and ordered his men to put Valentine in prison. There, he miraculously cured the warden's daughter of her blindness and deeply in love with her. Hearing of the miracle the cruel, Claudius felt very frightened and ordered Valentine beheaded. On the morning of the execution, Valentine wrote an affectionate farewell letter to the warden's daughter and then walked to his execution.

This day is February 14, 270 A.D. Since then, February 14 has been designated as "Valentine's Day" in memory of this kind-hearted friar Valentine

Customs 习俗
On this day lovers all around the world mark this occasion as a day for sending poems, cards, flowers or candy, etc.

Englishwomen of the 1700's wrote men's names on scraps of paper, rolled each in a little piece of clay, and dropped them all into water. The first paper that rose to the surface supposedly had the name of a woman's true love.

Also in the 1700's, unmarried women pinned five bay leaves to their pillows on the eve of Valentine's Day. They pinned one leaf to the center of the pillow and one to each corner. If the charm worked, they saw their future husbands in their dreams.

One of the oldest customs was the practice of writing women's names on slips of paper and drawing them from a jar. The woman whose name was drawn by a man became his valentine. Many men gave gifts to their valentines. In some areas, a young man gave his valentine a pair of gloves. Wealthy men gave fancy balls to honor their valentines.

The Double Seventh Festival (Qixi Festival)is one of Chinese traditional festivals, and also known as a Chinese Valentine's Day. It's based on a romantic legend about the cowherd (Niulang) and the girl weaver (zhīnǚ). It falls on the 7th day of the 7th Chinese lunar month.

According to a Chinese legend, Niu Lang and Zhi Nu are forbidden to live together although they love each other very much. They are only allowed to meet once a year.
On this very day Niu Lang and Zhi Nu will meet on a bridge of Magpies across the milky way. Traditionally people will sit outdoors to observe the stars in the evening. They believe they are able to see the famous meeting in the beautiful sky.

Today this day is celebrated by many couples to show their love .

The festival has been celebrated since the Han Dynasty. On May 20, 2015, the Double Seventh Festival was added to the National Intangible Cultural Heritage list by the State Council of China.

The most prevalent custom is that of girls praying to Zhi Nu for skillful hands for
sewing. Because Zhi Nu is regarded as a beautiful woman deft at weaving, in the evening of the festival, girls sew some articles to compete with each other and prepare some delicious fruits to worship Zhi Nu in order to be endowed with the masterly sewing skill. Not only hoping for this skill, they also pray to have a sweet love.

Worshiping the weaver fairy (the star Vega), involved a table of offerings: tea, wine, fruits, longans, red dates, hazelnuts, peanuts, and melon seeds. In the evening young women sat around the table, displaying their needlework, gazing at Vega, and praying for a good husband and a happy life. Then they'd play games or read poems until midnight.

Honoring oxen: Children picked bunches of wild flowers and hung them on the horns of oxen in honor of the legendary ox.

People made and ate "Skill Fruit": fried, thin pastries of different shapes.

Now people usually celebrate Chinese Valentine's Day by giving flowers, chocolates, and other presents to their sweethearts, instead of doing the traditional customs.。
