Part III Reading Comprehension (30marks)Directions: Read the following three passages. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.

Are you carrying too much on your back at school? I’m sure lots of children of your age will say “Yes”. Not only the students in China have this problem, but children in the United States also have heavy school bags.
Doctors are starting to worry that younger and younger students are having back
and neck problems as a result of school bags being too heavy for them.
“It’s hard for me to go upstairs with my bag because it’s so heavy,”said Rick,
an 11-year-old student in the USA.
Rick is among students who have common school bags with two straps(带子)to carry
them, but many other students choose rolling bags.(栏杆书包)
But even with rolling bags, getting up stairs and buses is still a problem for
children. Many of them have hurt their backs and necks because of the heavy school
bags.
But how much is too much? Doctors say students should carry no more than 10% to
15% of their own body weight. Scott Batch, a back doctor, said children under Grade
4 should stay with 10%.But it is also important that older children don’t stay with
over 15%,because their bodies are still growing.
“Children are losing their balance and falling down with their school bags,”
he said. Parents and teachers are starting to tell children to only take home libary
books they will be reading that night. Some teachers are using pieces of paper or
thin work books for students to take home.
One of the best answer is, as some children said, to have no homework at all!

There is a popular belief among parents that schools are no longer interested
in spelling. No school I have taught in has ever considered spelling unimportant as
a basic skill. There are, however, quite different ideas about how to teach it, or
how much priority (优先) it must be given over general language development and writing
ability. The problem is, how to encourage a child to express himself freely in writing without holding him back with spelling?
If spelling become the only focal point of his teacher’s interest, clearly a bright child will be likely to “play safe”. He will write only words within his spelling r ange, choosing to avoid adventurous language. That’s why teachers often encourage the early use of dictionaries and pay attention to content rather than technical ability.
I was once shocked to read on the bottom of a sensitive piece of writing about
a per sonal experience: “ This work is terrible! There are far too many spelling mistakes.” It may have been a sharp criticism(批评) of the pupil’s technical abilities in writing, but it was also a sad thing for the teacher who had omitted (省略,遗漏) to read the composition, which contained some beautiful expressions of the child’s deep feelings. . The teacher was not wrong to draw attention to the mistakes, but if his priorities had concentrated on the child’s ideas, an expression of his disappointment with the presentation would have given the pupil more hope to seek improvement.
61. Teachers are different in their opinions about .
A.the difficulties in teaching spelling
B.the role of spelling in general language development
C.the importance of the basic writing skills
D.the necessity of teaching spelling
62.I n the second paragraph, the expression “play safe” most probably means ____.
A.to write carefully
B.to do as teachers say
C.to use dictionaries frequently
D.to avoid using words one is not sure of
63. Teachers encourage the students to use dictionaries so that _______.
A.students will be able to express their ideas more freely
B.teachers will have less trouble in correcting mistakes
C.students will have more trust in writing
D.students will learn to spell words correctly
64. The writer seems to think that the teacher’s judgement on that sensitive piece
of writing is _______. .
A.reasonable
B.unfair
C.foolish
D. careless
65. The major point dicussed in the passage is ________. .
A.the importance of developing writing skills
B.the importance of spelling
C.the correct way of marking composition
D.the relationship between spelling and the content of a composition
C
How much rain has fallen on the earth in the past﹖Man has not always kept weather records. Because scientists need a way to learn about past rainfall, they study the tree rings.
A tree's trunk (树干) keeps growing year by year. Under its bark(树皮) , a tree
adds a layer(分层) of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump (树根), you can see the layers. They are called annual rings (年轮).
On some trees, all of the rings are of the same width. But the ponderosa (美国黄松) that grow in the American southwest have rings in different width. The soil in the southwest is dry.The pines depend on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. In a dry year they form narrow ones.
Scientists do not have to cut down a pine to study its rings. With a special tool, they remove a narrow piece of wood from the trunk without harming the tree. Then they look at the width of each ring to see how much rain fell in the year it formed. Some pines are hundreds of years old and have hundreds of rings. These rings form an annual record of past rainfall in the southwest.
66.We could infer from the passage that ____.
A.a tree grows faster when it has a lot of water
B.scientists cut down trees to study tree rings
C.pine trees form rings of the same width every year
D.the ponderosa grows in the southeast
67.A tree grows a new layer of wood ____.
A.each week B.whenever it rains C.every year D.every season
68.On the whole, this passage is about ____.
A.why the tree trunks grow bigger B.why scientists study tree rings
C.trees that lived hundreds of years ago D.the ponderosa in the US
69. The scientists __to know how much rain fell in a certain area in the past. A.climbed up the trees B.moved the pine tree
C.removed a piece of wood D.studied the width of the tree rings 70.Which of the following does the passage lead you to believe﹖
A.Young trees have fewer annual rings than old ones.
B.The trunk of a tree never changed in size.
C.Trees in the southwest do not need rain.
D.The soil in the southwest is fit for the growth of trees.
Part IV Writing (45 marks)

If you want to grow, you need to expand your personal capacity(个人能力). Expanding your personal capacity is necessary for your personal growth. It will take you the next level in life. It will make you a better person. For that, what you need to do is taking a new challeng. To help you choose one to take, here are a few ideas:
Take an online course
There are a lot of courses available online that you can choose from and there is even a new type of interactive courses that will give you assignments and feedback
(任务和反馈). With so many options available, I'm sure you can find something on the subject you are interested in.
Start a side business (兼职)
Perhaps you already have an idea for a side business. It could come from your hobby or from a specific need that you come across. Why don't you make it a reality this year? Having a side business is a good way to expand your capacity because it will teach you a lot in the process. Plus, you can earn extra money in uncertain economic times.
Start a blog Today everyone can express his or her thoughts through a blog. You are no longer limited to just being a consumer of information. If you have a subject you are interested in, it's a good idea to start a blog on it. You will learn a lot more by writing about it, and you will meet interesting people along the way.
One word of caution: don't expect instant (立刻的) success if you decided to build something. It takes time to build something, so don't get discouraged if your blog didn't attract many readers or your business didn't give you enough income in
Section B (10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage.Answer the questions according to the information from it.
While studying biology at Cambridge,I was invited to the London house of the famous sculptor(雕刻家), Epstein.
He thought I looked more like a playboy than a sculptor. But he was kind enough
to advise my father to spend the little money he had in getting me a studio.
Epstein came to see my work many times, teaching me more than any other artist. Once, when I was penniless(身无分文的), he came to my studio, looked at my works and said,“I would like to buy these.”I asked which one.“All of them,”he replied. Later, he provided money to support me in publishing my first book of sculpture and set out to put me on the map as an artist.
By the 1960s,I was known to many people. In 1964, I was planning a show at a gallery (画廊) in London. We already had heads of many famous people, but the gallery’s director asked if there were other famous people I’d like to sculpt(雕刻) for the event.Epstein recommended the Beatles, the most popular rock band in England in the 1960s. The finished statue was displayed at Stowe School. It was a hit, and I quickly became known to all throughout Britain.
Now as I worked on a piece, it is Epstein that I remember most --- an educated man and a wonderful teacher. It was Epstein who encouraged me to achieve success. Epstein told me that interest was the best teacher, but I think he was my best teacher.

Dear Lin Tao,
I’ve just got your letter and I know learning a foreign language can be difficult for some people, but there are many things you can do to overcome these difficulties.
To begin with, obtain as large a vocabulary as possible. It is a good habit to do some reading every day and spare no effort to remember some sentences with new words.
There is no doubt that practice makes perfect. Therefore, doing enough exercises can definitely improve your listening and writing. In this way, I suppose, your are sure to improve your English.
As for exam anxiety,it’s unnecessary for you to work too late before the exam. On the contrary, You’d better go to bed earlier than usual. Otherwise, you will feel tired the next
day. It is also suggested that drinking milk before going to bed may help you get a sound sleep. In addition, you can consult your teachers if you need more help.
I do hope my advice is helpful to you.
Yours truly
Li Ming。
