Nowadays traffic jams have been a problem of great concern in many cities. Some major roads are usually crowded in rush hours. What’s worse, increasing private cars and poor practice of traffic regulations bring more inconvenience to people’s life. Thus the traffic situation calls for urgent improvement.
To deal with the traffic problems, it’s wise to encourage people to go to work by bus, by bike or on foot instead of by car. In addition, widening major roads and opening up more bus lines can speed up the flow of traffic. Last but not least, asking people to observe traffic rules will also make a difference to reducing traffic jams. Only with everyone’s great efforts can we make our city roads less crowded.

1. M: I hear you’re going to drive to New York this weekend.
W: Oh, I’ve changed my mind. I think flying will be more comfortable.
2. M: The music and the flowers are lovely.
W: I hope the food here is lovely, too.
3. M: I haven’t seen Patrick for a long time. What’s he doing?
W: I saw him on the street yesterday. He said he had moved to another new flat in the east of town.
4. W: Do you have to watch TV at this time of the day? Don’t forget that you will have an English
test tomorrow.
M: Sorry, mum. I just can’t fall asleep. I will turn it down a bit.
5. W: Are you travelling alone, Mike?
M: No. I’ll take my family abroad this time.
W: What a wonderful experience that’ll be! I wish I could go someday.
6. W: You look tired. Didn’t you get enough sleep last night?
M: No. I had a number of friends over and we partied until midnight.
W: No wonder you look so bad.
M: I guess I just can’t take late nights like I used to. My head is turning round and round and I have a headache.
W: I think you need to go home and take a rest.
M: I wish I could. But I don’t think I can keep my eyes open long enough to drive home.
W: D on’t worry. I’ll give you a ride home.
7. W: Hi, Alan. You don’t look too well. What’s going on?
M: I just lost my job.
W: Oh, that’s too bad. So, have you been looking for another job?
M: I just started, but the job market is very bad now.
W: That’s really tough. What does your wife think about this?
M: She’s trying to be supportive. But I can tell she’s worried and worse still…
W: Worse still? What happened?
M: My father is in KG hospital resting. The doctors haven’t given a clear answer yet.
W: I’m so sorry to hear that. But I’m sure the doctors will try their best.
M: I hope so. Uh, I’m now really in hot water.
W: Hey Alan, cheer up. Well, I have some friends who might be able to help you find a job. I’ll see what they can do.
8. M: Hi, Jane. What are you doing?
W: Nothing special. I’m just watching a stupid game show on TV.
M: Would you like to see a movie with me?
W: Yeah, thanks. Which one?
M: Well, I can’t understand Japanese so it has to be an English movie.
W: Great. Shall we meet on the corner of Hyde Street and Park Street?
M: All right. What time do you want to meet?
W: Let’s meet at a quarter to six. I think the movie starts at half past six.
M: Ok. See you at 5:45. In the northeast corner. Ok?
W: Ok, see you.
9. W: What can I do for you, sir?
M: I want to buy a mobile phone for my daughter.
W: How old is she?
M: She is 17. It’s for her birthday. Most of her classmates have got one and she really needs one.
W: We have a new mobile phone, Nokia, especially designed for young girls.
M: Thanks, but I want to have a look at the Motorola products.
W: Sure. This one is so attractive and the quality is pretty good.
M: Sounds perfect. I’ll take the pink one.
W: Ok. I’ll pack it up for you right now.
10. Grandma Moses is among the most famous twentieth-century painters of the United States, yet she had only just begun painting in the late seventies. As she once said of herself, “I would never sit back in a rocking chair, waiting for someone to help me.”
She was born on a farm in New York State. At twelve she left home and until at twenty-seven, she married Thomas Moses. They farmed most of their lives. She had ten children, of whom five survived. Her husband died in 1928.
Grandma Moses painted a little as a child, but she wanted to keep busy and pass the time. Her pictures were first sold at an exhibition, and were soon noticed by a businessman who bought everything she painted. Three of the pictures were shown in the Museum of Modern Art, and in 1940 she had her first exhibition in New York City. Between the 1930s and her death she produced some 2,000 pictures: careful and lively pictures of the country life she had known, with a wonderful sense of color and form.。
