Our particular parenting style reflects our own way of “looking”. Here’s a great piece of writing reflecting parent’s particular ways on the parenting style that have become known humorously as helicopter parenting and submarine (潜水艇) parenting.
Helicopter parents hover over their children, managing every aspect of their child’s life. On the contrary, submarine parents remain “hidden” coming to the surface when guidance is needed.
While helicopter parents may have the best intentions, in reality, they are raising children with few problem solving skills. Children with hovering parents never get the chance to face disappointment and build up their ability to recover from misfortune.
Think about your typical submarine. Submarines usually remain underwater. In case of a need for emergency surfacing, submarines can rise so quickly they are driven partially out of the water. Submarine parents also remain out of sight, yet able to pop up in the case of an emergency.
I admit I’m a submarine mom. My job as a parent is to have fun with my daughters while letting them explore and learn natural consequences.
My older daughter found herself acting in commercials and making more than minimum wage as a teen. To give her a sense of the real world, I insisted she spend three weeks every summer, picking strawberries and earning $3.50 on a good day.
When my youngest daughter Sondra was six, she wanted a very expensive American Girl Doll. I cut the full color 18-inch picture out of the American Girl catalogue and had it laminated (压膜). “Here’s your American Girl Doll.” I said “When you turn nine, I’ll buy you the 3D doll on your
birthday.” Sondra played with her flat doll for months, making clothes and furniture for her. She learned creativity. I saved $88.00.

You know eating fruit and vegetables is virtuous. But did you know it can also make you look good?
People who increased their intake over just six weeks developed a healthy glow and appeared more attractive, researchers found.
Scientists at St Andrews University found eating them subtly increased yellow and red pigments in the volunteers’ skin.
They monitored the food intake of 35 people and took pictures of their faces, arms and hands using a sensitive camera at the start, and after three and six weeks.
Increasing their intake of greens by 2.9 portions a day was found to make the person look healthier and an extra 3.3 portion could enhance their attractiveness, when their photographs were rated by others.
Fruit and vegetables are rich in carotenoids(类胡萝卜素), which are known to protect against cell damage from pollution and UV rays, and can also prevent age-related diseases including heart disease and cancer.
But while it was known eating extreme amounts of certain vegetables such as carrots could turn skin orange, it was not known a small increase was perceptible to others and was seen as appealing.
A camera measured changes to the skin’s redness, yellowness and lightness, and found it significantly changed in people who naturally increased their intake. These changes were not evident at three weeks.
Using light sensors, the researchers showed these red and yellow hues(色调,色相) were linked with the levels of carotenoids in their skin.
There are hundreds of carotenoids but those thought to have the most dramatic effect are lycopene(番茄红素)which gives tomatoes and red peppers their red color - and beta-carotene found in carrots as well as broccoli, squash, and spinach.
Skin color is also affected by chemicals called polyphenols(多酚), found in apples, blueberries and cherries, which cause blood rush to the skin surface.
66. From Paragraph 4, we learn that pictures were taken ______.

Since we are social beings, the quality of our lives depends in large measure on our interpersonal relationships. One strength of the human conditions is our possibility to give and receive support from one another under stressful(有压力的) conditions. Social support consists of the exchange of resources among people based on their interpersonal ties. Those of us with strong support systems appear better able to deal with major life changes and daily problems. People with strong social ties live longer and have better health than those without such ties. Studies over types of illnesses, from
depression to heart disease, show that the presence of social support helps people defend themselves against illness, and the absence of such support makes poor health more likely.
71. Interpersonal relationships are important because they can _______.
A. deal with life changes
B. smooth away daily problems
C. make people live more easily
D. cure types of illnesses
72. The researches show that people's physical and mental health _______.
A. has much to do with the amount of support they get from others

第Ⅱ卷(非选择题,共35分)
第四部份:写作. 第一节阅读表达(共5题;每题2分,总分值10分)
阅读下面短文并回答下列问题(请注意问题后的词数要求)。
[1]The speed you walk at is as good an indicator of how long you’ll live as your health history, smoking habits and blood pressure combined, U.S. researchers have found.
[2]Analyzing data on over 34,000 adults aged 65 or over, University of Pittsburgh physiologists found speeds of 2.6 feet per second were associated with average life expectancy; the highest survival rates were enjoyed by those who walked 3.3 feet per second or faster, with greatest gains seen in fast walkers aged over 75.
[3]The authors emphasized going out and walking faster would not necessarily make you live you longer —your speed is an indicator rather than a cause of good health. However, John Brewer, professor of sport at the University of Bedfordshire says, upping your pace a little, whatever age you are, can have real benefits.
[4]Load-bearing exercise such as walking will strengthen your bones and protect against osteoporosis(骨质疏松), but going faster will demand more power and in turn increase muscle mass which will increase your metabolism and help control your weight, while providing extra stability to prevent injury through falls, which are a real concern, especially for the elderly.
[5]Interestingly, you’ll burn more calories per mile at snail speeds, Profe ssor Brewer says. At slower speeds you’ll walk less efficiently which requires more energy to travel the same distance. But the health benefits of walking or running extend far beyond burning calories, to lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and much more.

(Text 10)
Good afternoon, I want to thank Professor Johnson for giving me the chance to talk to you students today about Alaska. One of the things that concern me most is the future of the Alaskan environment.
About twenty years ago before going on a research trip, I visited Anchorage, the largest city in Alaska. It was then a small city with a population of more or less 40,000, surrounded by forests and mountains. When I made a recent trip to update my earlier work, I found amazing changes. Anchorage now has 180,000 people, more than four times as many as in 1960. There’re high buildings, shopping centers, and all the accompanying crowds and traffic jams. The forests and mountains are still nearby,
but they seem reduced by the city’s great size. The discovery of oil in 1968 in the north of Alaska caused many of these changes. The construction of the across Alaska oil pipeline brought increased wealth to the state. However, there have been too many people moving to Alaska in a very short period of time. There is not enough housing and transportation. I think Alaska must make important decisions soon. Alaskans need to decide how to develop their natural resources and minerals well without destroying nature and harming the wildlife.
For today’s lecture, I’ve brought along many of the slides I usually show in my environmental science classes at my own university.。
