Man has not always kept weather records. Because scientists need a way to learn about past rainfall, they study the tree rings.A tree’s trunk (树干) keeps growing year by year. Under its bark (树皮), a tree adds a layer of new wood each year it lives. If you look at a tree stump, you can see the layers. They are called annual ring (年轮).On some trees, all of the rings are of the same width. But the ponderosa(美国黄松) that grows in the American southwest have rings in different widthes. The soil in he southwest is dry. The pines depend on rainfall for water. In a year of good rainfall, they form wide rings. Older people may want you to call them by their titles and family names, such as “Mr.Jones”, “Mr.Smith”,”Ms.Johson”,or “Dr.Brown”.A maiden name is a woman’s family name at birth. They are among the most common and widespread of all natural disasters. Even more importantly, they’re the No. 1 weather-related killer. A flood can happen anywhere along the Mississippi, in New England, even in the desert. The following are some fascinating facts about floods and flash floods.A flood (commonly called a river flood) is the high flow of water from a river of similar body of water, happening over a period of time too long to be considered a flash flood. Flooding is caused in many ways. Winter or spring rains, together with melting snows, can fill rivers too quickly. Heavy rains from hurricanes or other tropical (热带的) systems can also produce river flooding. The Mississippi River Flood of 1993 was caused by repeated heavy rain from thunderstorms over a period of weeks.Flash floods are quickly-rising floods which are usually the result of heavy rains over a short period of time, often only several hours or even less. They can also be caused by ice jams (冰塞) on rivers related to a winter or spring melting, or occasionally even a dam break. The constant influx (汇集) of water finally causes a great overflow to begin, powerful enough to sweep vehicles away, roll big stones into roadways, uproot trees, level buildings, and knock bridge down. The speed of the rising of water is the most frightening thing.Remember: Move to higher ground and stay away from low areas during heavy rain. Stay out of flooded areas. Never allow children to play or walk in flowing water. Never drive your car into water of unknown depths.56. What is the best title for the passage?A. Power of floodsB. Damage of floodsC. 2024秋新教材高中英语Unit4Humour单元测试北师大版选择性必修第二册
UNIT 4HUMOUR(满分:120分建议用时:120分钟)第一部分阅读(50分)第一节(共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)AIt is widely believed that humour is good for your health. However, most studies on humour and health show that by watching something humorous — comedy films, for example — you can just escape from the pain for a short time, or that humour just helps reduce signs of a disease. So far, no study has shown that humour can help a person recover from a serious illness. One way to study the relationship between humour and health is looking at the health of people who use humour as part of their jobs: comedians and improv(即兴表演) artists, for example. Not only do they use humour as part of their work, but also they show the highest levels of humour ability. So if humour is really good for our health, we can anticipate that comedians benefit the most from it.Although it is often said that humour can make people live longer, research has actually found the opposite to be true. One study found that comedians and humour writers actually died younger compared with other famous people who were not performers. However, these studies were somewhat limited, because most of the comedians were men and already dead. And many famous people often live very unhealthy lives, and the comedians might have died from reasons such as heavy drinking or smoking. My colleagues and I decided to take a different way. We collected data(数据) from 491 improv artist students — 224 women and 267 men — all alive. We compared this improv group with 795 noncomedians, who were matched in age, sex, and education. We asked participants from both groups to tell us how many diseases they had had in the past three years and how long they had lasted. The improv artists reported that they had had many more diseases, and that these diseases had lasted longer compared with the control group. So our study adds further evidence to the conclusion made by the studies before.( )1.What do most studies on humour and health show about humour?A.It doesn't really reduce signs of diseases.B.It just helps reduce people's pain for a while.C.It can't really make people feel comfortable.D.It can help one recover from a serious disease.( )2.What does the underlined word “anticipate” in Paragraph 2 mean?A.Predict. B.Notice.C.Understand. D.Explain.( )3.What can we know about the improv artists from the author's research?A.They had more unhealthy habits.B.They benefited more from humour.C.They were more likely to get diseases.D.They did better in taking care of themselves.【语篇解读】本文是一篇说明文。

第一部分阅读理解[共两节,满分35分]第一节(共10小题;每小题2.5分,满分25分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
AAre some people born clever, and others born stupid? Or is intelligence developed by our environment and our experiences? Strangely enough, the answer to both these questions is yes. To some degree our intelligence is given us at birth, and no amount of special education can make a genius out of a child born with low intelligence. On the other hand, a child who lives in a boring environment will develop his intelligence less than one who lives in rich and varied surroundings. Thus the limits of a person's intelligence are fixed at birth, but whether or not he reaches those limits will depend on his environment. This view, now held by most experts, can be supported in a number of ways.It is easy to show that intelligence is to some degree something we are born with. The closer the blood relationship between two people, the closer they are likely to be in intelligence. Thus if we take two unrelated people at random(随机地)from the population, it is likely that their degrees of intelligence will be completely different. If on the other hand we take two identical(完全相同的) twins they will very likely be as intelligent as each other. Relations like brothers and sisters, parents and children, usually have similar intelligence, and this clearly suggests that intelligence depends on birth.Imagine now that we take two identical twins and put them in different environments. We might send one, for example, to a university and the other to a factory where the work is boring. We would soon find differencesin intelligence developing, and this indicates that environment as well as birth plays a part. This conclusion is also suggested by the fact that people who live in close contact with each other, but who are not related at all, are likely to have similar degrees of intelligence.1,Which of these sentences best describes the writer's point in Paragraph 1?A. To some degree, intelligence is given at birth.B. Intelligence is developed by the environment.C.Some people are borm clever and others borm stupid.D.Intelligence is fixed at birth, but is developed by he environment.2.It is suggested in this passage that .A. unrelated people are not likely to have different intelligenceB.close relations usually have similar intelligenceC. the closer the blood relationship between people, the more different they are likely to be in intelligenceD.people who live in close contact with each other are not likely to have similar degrees3.In Paragraph 1, the underlined word "surroundings" means .A.intelligenceB.lifeC.environmentsD.housing4.The best title for this article would be .A.On IntelligenceB.What Intelligence MeansC. We are Bom with IntelligenceD.Environment Plays a Part in Developing IntelligenceBI am Henry Jekyll. I was born in the 1800s. I inherited a large fortune, a healthy body and an excellent mind.I was naturally hard-working and soon I was very successful in my job. So the outside world saw a serious,hard-working,successful doctor. Behind this quiet character, however, was a wild, fun-loving, irresponsible young man. Both of them were me. They lived together in the same body.“Was it possible, ” I wondered,“to find a drug that could give each side of my character its own separate face and body?"After much thought and careful study I believed I had found the answer.I had read many scientific books and spent many hours in my laboratory, searching for the right mixture of chemicals to make my drug. At last I got everything ready.Late one night,I mixed everything together and prepared my drug.I watched the smoke rising from the liquid as its color changed from red to purple and at last to green. Then, bravely,I drank every bitter drop.I felt a violent sickness in my stomach and a terrible pain in all my bones. The room seemed to turn round and round and I trembled with fear. Then the fear and pain disappeared and a strange, sweet feeling took its place. Wild thoughts danced through my mind--the wild passions of an evil and cruel stranger. But inside myself I felt younger, lighter, more carefree than ever before. "If this is pure evil, " I thought, "I like it. "I stood there, enjoying these strange new thoughts and passions and suddenly realized that I was shorter. So I decided to go to my bedroom in my new body and take a look at myself in the mirror there. As I came into my room,I saw Edward Hyde for the first time.At that time, the good side of my character was stronger than the evil side.Henry Jekyll had his faults, but he was mostly a good, kind man.I believe that is the reason why Edward Hyde was so much smaller than Henry Jekyll. But that was not the only difference between the two men.Henry Jekyll had a kind, open, honest face. But pure evil stared out of Edward Hyde's eyes. I felt no dislike, however. Indeed, I welcomed him. Edward Hyde was me, young and strong and full of life.5. In others' eyes, the writer was .A.wild and successfulB. fun-loving and responsibleC. serious and hard-workingD.quiet and irresponsible6. The writer wanted to find a drug to .A. discover the right mixture of chemicalsB.observe the change of the chemicalsC.create separate bodies for both sidesD.make himself smaller but stronger7.From the passage we can learn that the writer .A.was satisfied with both of his bodiesB. preferred kind Henry to pure evil EdwardC.was very sick of the shorter Edward HydeD. felt quite delighted right after taking the drugCFrom now, if all goes well,a high-tech spacecraft will land in the South Pole of the moon. There, it will drill 66 feet down into the surface and collect samples of the mantle(地幔样本) to bring back to the earth. But before it leaves, it will have a two-part time capsule(时光胶囊):a public part, full of the Earth's history, and a private part, full of digital memory boxes created by individuals. These memory boxes can hold digital files---records of family trees, videos or actual DNA in the form of human hair. Not everyone can have a digital memory box , though. The boxes are only delivered for the people who donate the money to the project. The project, called Lunar Mission One, has already raised more than half of its £ 600, 000 goal since its launch(启动) just a few days ago. The founders thought that it would succeed because of the attraction of both exploring the moon surface and leaving a time capsule behind. The mission was a technical action, but it was alsoan emotional one, bringing the excitement of knowing that something humans built on the Earth reached somewhere else in space.Still,it does seem risky(冒险的)for a person to donate £ 60 to keep a digital memory box for a project that won't come true until 2024. What if the project never takes off? What if the technology isn't good enough? Whatif those digital memory boxes break on the moon's surface? And how will anybody ever even know if that happens? Ian Crawford,a professor at Birkbeck College in London and scientific advisor to the mission, says it isnot necessary to worry about these. The plan to leave a time capsule on the moon isn't really about physically leaving something on the moon-it's more an opportunity to encourage people's interest in space.8.Who can have a digital memory box on the moon?A.A person who donates £ 60 to the project.B.A person who has records of family trees.C.A person who is in charge of the project.D.A person who is interested in exploring the moon.9. What can be learned about Lunar Mission One from Paragraph 3?A. The spacecraft was successfully launched just a few days ago.B. It will explore the moon surface and leave a time capsule on the moon.C. It was created because of the excitement of knowing something in space.D. It was a technical action because it was designed with rich emotion.10. Why does it seem risky to donate £ 60 to keep a digital memory box?A. Because the spacecraft won't be sent on time.B. Because the technology isn't good enough.C.Because the project won't come true until 2034.D.Because there are various possibilities in such a long time.第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。
