Firstly, the author gives a brief introduction about the two nations. Secondly, the author will introduce some detailed information about British characters and American characters. This part is the soul of the paper, also it includes the author’s opinions. Thirdly, the author will state several implications of this Study. In this part, the author concludes the necessaries of knowing about British and American Characters and the right attitudes towards their characters and values. Finally, it is a brief conclusion, it’ll benefits us in our communications with foreigners.Key words: contrastive study; British character; American character; implications1.IntroductionThis paper is about a contrastive study of British and American Characters. It’s based on several books. After we finished our textbook we all know that Britain and America are two different nations, they have different cultural backgrounds, different history and so on. These result their civilian’s different characters. The paper introduces British and American characters separately, then some obvious differences between them. I hope readers can benefit something from it.2. The Contrastive Study of British and American Characters2.1 British CharacterBritain isn’t a single nation country. So, there isn’t the existence of British characters, in other words so called “British characters” mainly mean “E nglish characters”. But, in the whole Britain, English characters represent most of the British characters, so, I’ll place great emphasis on English characters.First , English people tend to be rather conservative-a little more so, perhaps, than most of others. In fact the conservative attitude consists of an acceptance of things which are familiar, and an important aspect of it is an inclination to be suspicious of anything that is strange or foreign. English people don't want to figure out whether the familiar ideas or practices are right or wrong .They tend to be hostile, or at least bored when they hear any suggestions that some modification of their habits, or the introduction of something new and unknown into their lives, might to be convenient to them.( 吴延迪,1994) Although modern methods of cooking, by electricity or gas, were accepted long ago, and few people would now favor the old type of coal—fined grate. Even sometimes a great deal of smoke is poured into the room when cooking. May be we feel confused, perhaps it is because different cultural background results in different characters. Now won’t deeper study about the reason.Second, to other Europeans, the best known quality of the British, especially the English, is reserve. A reserved person is one who doesn’t talk very mush to strangers, doesn’t show much emotion and seldom gets excited. And conversation in Britain is in general quiet and restrained and loud speech is considered ill-bred .This reluctance to communicate with others is an unfortunate quality in some ways, since it tends to give the impression of coldness and it’s turethat the English are not noted for their generosity and hospitality. On the other hand, they are perfectly human behind their barrier of reserve. British don’t make friends at random If a friendly stranger or foreigner succeeds for a time in breaking the barrier down, you’ll get their sincere hearts and loyal friendships. So every nation doesn’t like what you see, you should use your heart to find their beauty.Third, British humor .In Britain, humor is highly praised. It’s an attitude to life rather than the mere ability to laugh at jokes. Their humors don’t just make you laugh, but have different deep meanings behind.Forth, politeness. Britain is regarded as a nation with much ceremony. Their social systems are in perfect order. After several centuries’ accumulation of excellent mores ,in Britain ,not only the adult but also the old and the young behave fairly in public .They have been used to waiting in long lines without any complains ,speaking softly in public ,smiling to every passers-by . You may think such society is tedious but in such society, people’s dignity is fully respected.Then at last I want to add one more character. British people are voracious newspaper readers .They read newspapers at breakfast waiting for bus, after finishing work, before going to bed. I always think this is also a character of British.2.2 American CharactersThe first aspect of American characters is that the Americans emphasis on the importance of the individual. Most of them would like to be popular and attractive among friends. So they prefer to get along with friends at ease and make as many friends as possible. Americans don’t like to be flattered by others, and they also don’t want to obey others. Americans can make friends easily and earn others’ good impressions quickly, but after a week, they’ll forget you completely.( 薛广历,1999) So, it’s difficult to set up a real friendship with Americans.The second aspect of American characters is independence. They don’t want to rely on others they also don’t want to be relied on by others .Americans are accustomed to striving for the things by themselves. You can see many American students pay for their tuition fees by doing part-time jobs or earning scholarships. When they grow up to adults, they’ll leave their parents and live their own lives.The third aspect of American characters is that they are materialistic. American belief is that they should get proper rewards after finishing the work .The AA system in paying for the meals in a restaurant is the most obvious representation about this American character.The forth aspect of American characters is democracy. “All men are created equal.” say the Declaration of Independence. The American belief in equality of opportunity is illustrated by American Dream –the belief that any individual, no matter how poor, can achieve wealth and fame through diligence and virtue. This character encourages thousands of Americans to pursue their rich lives from generation to generation.The last character is that American likes movement. It’s said every year about 40 million Americans move from one place to another place. The frequent movements show that they aren’t satisfied peaceful lives. They desire adventures new places, new friends and new opportunities. They also like travel very much .The character of pursuing adventure is more outstanding than other nations.2.3. The Differences in British and American CharactersGenerally speaking, British is a quiet nation, while American is a wild and energetic nation. After introducing British and American characters. It’s apparent some differences exist between two nations. I summarize some important points in the following statements.,First, as a nation, British people are quiet, shy, conservative, reserved, elegant and restrained. As a complete series of culture, amenity, and custom systems. And in history, British was the most powerful country in the world, this made British people from the self-righteous characters. However, America is an energetic state. I t’s a nation with openness and creativity. It’s a short history from American independence, so there are few rules to observe.( 孙利民,2005) Then you will feel that Americans are open and talkative.Second, you will find that it’s difficult to make friends with British people. But , you found a good friendship with them ,it’ll last forever. While, in America, you’ll make many friends very easily, but, you know ,they forget you very soon. It’s difficult to make forever friendship with them.Third, British people still keep traditional lifestyle and they don’t like to accept new things or new reformation. But, Americans like to try new things. They’ll make use of every chance to achieve development.Last, if compare British people with Americans, you’ll find a very interesting phenomenon. In Britain one’s birth always decides his fate. But, in American, people believe the popular “rags-to-riches” stories, and they’ll struggle for living a better life.Above are my some opinions of their differences.3. Implications of this StudyLanguage is an important carrier of culture, has the profound cultural connotation. A national language reflects the national culture. The national characters are reflected in language and vocabulary. The national character is a form of culture, and it is the national language closely linked.Be aware of British people’s quietness, reserve and conservation. Also, know more about American emphasis placed on individualism, equality, and progress, as well as the way in which American friendships operate. These can help us in our adjustment to British or American life. If you understand these British and American characters and values, you’ll realize that British people or Americans look at everything in their own cultural points of view, just as you do. Maybe you’ll avoid many misunderstandings when you communicate with them. Perhaps, you’ll make a lot of foreign friends.4. ConclusionWhat we can conclude from our discussion of British and American characters is that the more we know, the more we understand; the more we understand, the more we misapprehend; the more we misapprehend; the more we are open to people; the more we are open to people, the easier it’ll develop good relationships with them. So, we can see some examples that students say both American English and British English in a sentence but they don’t realize. The mixture of American pronunciation and British pronunciation is commonly seen in our daily communication and that makes the pronunciation not be native. So in my opinion, distinguish the differences on pronunciation of common words between American and British English clearly is very important. Through recognize their own characters of pronunciation, we can know them better and use them better and more exactly.Now, let us start to make a distinction between their different pronunciations. As for the phoneme, there are two questions between American English and British English’s pronunciations. One is that the same phoneme has differences in allophonic transcription between American English and British English; the other is that American English and British English use different phoneme in the same word, i.e. the differences on pronunciation.1. British people always pronounce with clear articulation and a mellow and full tune, but American people’s mouths are often wide open and their pronunciation is a little flatter and leaning forward. That is one of the most common differences between American English and British English. For example, [ɑ], [ɑ:] and [æ], these three phonetic symbols have different use in the same word between American English and British English. British people pronounce [ɑ] or [ɑ:] in a word, but American people pronounce [æ]. As for the simple word ask, in British English, its phonetic symbol is [ɑ:sk], but in American English, the phonetic symbol become [æsk]. When British people pronounce this word, their pronunciation is leaning backward, but American people’s pronunciation is leaning forward, that is the different. There are also many examples that can explain this difference. As for me, I always forget this difference between these two kinds of English, but I think it is also very important if you want to have a native accent, especially native American accent.7. It is a small difference between American English and British English, because there are not many examples that can explain it. We pronounce the monogram ‘ei’ [i:] in American English, while [ai] in British English; e.g. the words either and neither, when British people say ‘either’, they pronounce ['aiðə], but American people pronounce ['i:ðə], so as the word neither.8. Adversely, if a person mix both American English and British English in one sentence, one word is American English and another is British English, he will be thought that he didn’t study well so he couldn’t distinguish the pronunciation between American English and British English. 集体主义者乐于关心他人,与其他人合作。

反之,个人主义强调个人的利益,目标和成就,个人主义还推崇自由,独立,平等,隐私权和民主等。

总之,对美国个人主义和中国的集体主义的分析能够反应出两种文化的本质,以及中美社会的批判性问题产生的根源。

通过集体主义和个人主义的对比分析能够更好的了解中美文化,更有效的避免文化冲突。

It is pervasive, multidimensional, complicated and ubiquitous. In terms of Intercultural study, the definition of culture should be the one that contains the recurring theme of how culture and communication are linked together. Prior to the intercultural study, as the core of intercultural study, the cultural value systems should be taken into consideration. The cultural values guide both our perception and communication. An understanding of cultural values helps us appreciate the behaviorof other people and thus offers some insights into intercultural communication.Collectivism and individualism actually act as shapers of society and affect social interactions and communications. As the principles underlying individualism and collectivism between the West and East are entirely different, the communication patterns and styles between the two sides are also entirely different. A lack of awareness and misinformation are the causes of many cross-cultural conflicts. Therefore an understanding of the individualism or collectivism of another culture helps to predict the behaviors of people from it and then enable people to decide and adjust their approach to ensure a successful intercultural communication.Chapter TwoThe Overview of Intercultural communicationThe intercultural communication ( IC ) has become a popular discipline in recent years. In fact, there is not a close relationship between the rise and the developmentof IC and foreign language development, but the latter has been impacted by the growth of IC studies. Actually, the intercultural communication is a complex of integration of various humanities disciplines. Many fields that interacted or influenced are linguistics, anthropology, socio-psychology, semiotics, philosophy and pragmatics and so on.. These disciplines have offered constructive aid to the construction of theory, and to the orientation, contents , approches and even the terms of IC.Generally speaking, several factors help to contribute to the development of intercultural communication. The first is the rapid expansion of worldwide communication especially the advancement of communication networks. It is possible to communicate with people in another country within seconds. Secondly, communication satellites, sophisticated television transmission equipment and the World Wide Web allow people throughout the world to share the ideas and information at the same time. Thirdly, due to the shrinking of time and space, human beings ha ve become aware of the “ global village ’’,nations have realized that they should work together to solve some problems or confront the common stly, the international and domestic changes have brought people into direct and indirect contract with people who, because of cultural diversity, often behave in ways that they do not understand.In the foreign language education circle, more and more teachers and students have strong desire to promote their international communication competence that the development of international communication has been enhanced.Chapter Three Cultural ValuesHofstede’s Value Dimensions TheoryHofstede is one of the earliest scholars who deployed extensive statistical data on examining cultural values. Hofstede further developed his earlier theory on cultural values into the four value dimensions theory. For testifying his four value dimensions theory Hofstede surveyed thousands upon thousands of workers in multinational organizations among fifty countries and three regions. Through careful observations and analyses, Hofstede drew a table to present his major findings and arranged the countries and regions in an order from one to fifty according to the features of the four value dimensions ( individualism, uncertainty avoidance, power distance, masculinity-femininity, long-term/short-term orientation)as measurement.Chapter FourChinese Collectivism and American Individualism4.1. Chinese CollectivismCollectivism is characterized by a rigid social framework that distinguishes between in-groups and out-groups. People count on their in-group ( relatives, clans, and organizations) to look after them, and in exchange for that, they believe they owe absolute loyalty to the group.Triandis offers an excellent summary of this situation: Collectivism means greater emphasis on(a)the views, needs, and goals of the in-group rather than oneself;(b)social norms and duty defined by the in-group rather than behavior to get pleasure;(C)beliefs shared with the in-group rather than beliefs that distinguish self from in-groups;and(d)great readiness to cooperate with in-group members.(Triandis,1990:52)Kim, Sharkey, and Singles believe that traits such as indirect communication, saving face, concern for others, and group cooperation are linked to the collective orientation.(Kim, Sharkey, and Singles,1992:160)This definition subsumes ideas such as high interdependence, interpersonal sensitivity, comformity, readiness to be influenced by others, mutual sympathy, self-sacrifice for in-group members, and external control. The emphasis is on the in-group—i.e., a group of people who influence an individual’s behavior, so that the individual chooses the goals of this group, or subjugates his or personal goals to theirs. Other orientation is the extension of collectivism orientation, which behaves like this: when a Chinese wants to do something, he will firstly take others’ viewpoint into consideration. This results in Chinese face saving and doing something not in accordance with one’s social status is considered losing the face. It is the habit of people not to offend others even at a cost of telling a lie. As professor Yang Guoshu said,“ traditional Chinese paid attenti on to neither the accordance of behavior and thought nor the order of them, but the ability to play to the score”(Yang,1989:218)4.2 American IndividualismAmericans value independent, self-reliant, and ambitious personalities. The values, such as privacy, self-reliance, equality and competition can best describe the spirit of individualism. The proverb“ God helps those who help themselves ”calls attention to the strong belief in America that people should show individual initiatives. In th e United States, people are encouraged to“speak up”and make sure their individual views are heard.“ Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps ”also manifests the belief in individual initiative. The proverb “A man’s home is his castle ”tells us about the value of privacy.Individualism also refers to the pursuit for freedom and difference. Everyone wants to be different from others. Difference almost has the same meaning with individualism and deserves the same appreciation, while to keep oneself in accordance with others will be considered losing personality. Americans prefer something unconventional or unorthodox, enjoying life and free development, which not only include the pursuit for material profits but also for individual freedom and self-reali zation. Lin Yutang once talked about American individualism orientation,“…they never worry about something passively, but try their best to stride forward; they never wait for others’ help , but help themselves; they never wait for chances but create chanc es.” He also said ,“…You should remember one thing that if your success is subject to others, you will be destined to fail…”(Lin,1990:37).It is because Americans advocate individualism and freedom in expressing ideas, doing things, displaying abilities, an d attaining goals. And that’s the reason why Americans lay so much emphasis on something external, individual, powerful and why they are aggressive and love competition.4.3 The Application of Chinese Collectivism and American Individualism in FriendshipThe Chinese highly value friendship. Chinese expect friendship to be long lasting. In China a true friendship is a relationship that endures through changes in the lives of the friends. Chinese friends give each other much more concrete help and assistance than American friends do. A Chinese friend will use personal connections to help a friend get something hard to obtain, such as a job, an appointment with a good doctor, an easier path through an official procedure, or an introduction to another person who might also be able to give concrete help. Chinese friends give each other money and might help each other out of financial troubles over a long period of time. This is rarely part of American friendships, because it creates dependence of one person on theother and it goes against the principle of equality.In America people prefer to be independent rather than dependent, so they do not feel comfortable in a relationship in which one person is giving more and the other person is dependent on what is being given. For Americans friendship is mostly a matter of providing emotional support and spending together. Few Americans have connections with their former schoolmates or childhood friends. In this respect, they would“let bygones be bygones”. Generally speaking, Americans easily make acquaintance with others; t hey can have a wide acquaintance, but can’t maintain long-term friendship with them.Chapter FiveConclusionThe United States and China stand on almost opposite ends of the continuum of individualism and collectivism, and respectively represent Western and Eastern values. We can not directly assert that America is an absolute individualistic society and without change, in individualism of America there is team spirit, and we cannot say that China is an absolute collectivistic society, because under the influence of western culture, there is also privacy in China recently. Although there are significant differences in Chinese and American cultures and these differences constitute a key reason behind the two countries’disagreement on series of questions, the two countries have important common interests in many fields, which decide that they should have mutual cooperation instead of conflict. The important thing is to promote mutual understanding through contact and dialogue so as to reduce disagreements and expand common ground. The author of this thesis sincerely hopes that China and America may increase cultural communication and cooperation and the two people may walk hand in hand into a bright future.Based on Hofstede’s individualism-collectivism theory, through a comparative study, I select collectivism and individualism of the two countries as research perspective to contrast and analyze them. Cultural difference and different values in America and China constitute factors of cultural clash respectively. On the one hand, the clash of both countries’culture has various forms, and most of them are due to acute collision of individualism and collectivism in a certain condition. But on the other hand, diversity between cultures in America and China also promotes them to learn from other’s strong points to offset one’s weakness, reconciliation and cooperation. A Contrastive Study of British and American EducationAbstract: This paper is to have a contrastive study of British and American education. The author firstly introduced the position and role of education in society. As is all known, education plays an important role in our life, people are closely contact with education.Secondly, he gave a briefly comparison between British and American education. In a word, there is having many differences. Thirdly, he introduced British education and American education system at different periods in detail, this is the main part of the paper.Then, he pointed the main differences between two countries.Next, and he made analysis of the reasons why the two countries have difference in education. Education is “like a big window opening”. What‟s more, someone think it is the root of national development. Through the education, people know more knowledge, invent high-tech and create more materials. So, education plays an important role in our society. People are closely contact with education, everyone more or less to receive education, education become a part of life. In the world, education also a hot topic, every country pays much attention to the education.Nowadays; national competition is base on talent. Of course, because every country has different geographical position, history and economy development, so they have different education system. Today I will introduce something about British education and American education, the two countries‟ education is representative in the world. As is known to all, they have many famous universities, and most of top universities belong to the two countries. Every year, there are lots of students from all over the word apply for further study at British or American schools.Therefore,we know something about two countries‟ education system is help for us to choose suitable further study school.2、The Contrastive Study of British and American EducationBritish and American education all focused on cultivating compound talents, have a creative spirit and practical spirit, the school does not depend entirely on the exam, or the requirements of comprehensive quality, comprehensive ability.Of course, British and American higher education system also has many different points. This is a part of the public education system, for the vast majority of British children to provide education. Children at the age of five enter junior school, at the age of eleven, the general come into middle school or college. (3) Secondary schools. There are two systems for secondary schooling, the selective and the comprehensive. Under old selective system, children take an examination, called the …eleven plus‟, in their last year at primary school. The result directly decides the kind of secondary schools they will enter. Those with highest marks go to grammar schools: schools are concentrating on academic subjects and expect student earn high marks and go to university. Other children may go to technical schools: schools teach students more practical. The rest-by far majority-go to secondary modern school.(4)University. British government pay attention to university, there are many scholarships awarded, it is open to all intelligent pupils, both man and female. British have many famous universities, such as Oxford, Cambridge, St Andrews, and Edinburgh. Oxford and Cambridge have two systems spread all over the world. One is college system, whereby all students live in college during at least part of their course. The other feature is the tutorial system, whereby each student gets personal tuition once a week in his tutor‟s own room.The British high schools offer education until they are sixteen years old, the school helps students prepare for the general certificate of secondary education or equivalent level course examination. A considerable number of foreign students in eleven or thirteen years old to the British school, High school students in sixteen years completed compulsory education, can legally leave school, started to work. However, most of the students in preparatory course students entered the Preparatory Academy or college of further education, where learning schools A-level or equivalent level course. Foreign students at this stage to British education, such as study A-level courses, to study in the UK university continuation course or prepare. According to the age is mainly divided into the following four categories:(1) primary school: Grades 1-6(6-12 years).(2)junior high school: grades 7-8(13-14 years).(3)middle school: Grades 9-12(15-18 years).(4)University (College): General for 4years (18years), and the " academy" or" College", as the university graduate students engaged in the research and the establishment of it.First, I will introduce something about Early Childhood Education. In most areas, free public school education begins with kindergarten classes for five-year olds. This is the first time children separate with his or her mother, playing and sharing with other children, and following the directions of a teacher. Every year, nearly three millionAmerican children attend kindergarten. For many, kindergarden is his or her first school experience. Nursery schools accept children from three to five years old for half-day sessions ranging form twice a week, Nursery schools usually charge tuition, though some are subsidized and some offer scholarships.Besides,Day care centers provide care for pre-school children of working mothers who need a place to leave their children all day, five days a week. Then there are Grammar school and High school. The first academic institution that a child attends is called grammar school or elementary school. In some school systems, elementary school includes grades one through eight. The next four years are called high school. In other systems, there are three divisions: elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school.American university currently have quasi bachelor, bachelor, master, doctor's degree system, representing the two major categories of undergraduate and postgraduate education in 4 different academic levels.(1) Two-year colleges, also known as primary or Institute of technology, for the majority of the public, mostly organized by the local communities, it is commonly referred to as community college. Community colleges offer courses are of two kinds: a kind of as transitional arts curriculum, the equivalent of 4years of University in the first two years, students learns Bike into 4 years university to continue his studies; another kind is the termination of occupation technology curriculum, graduates employment directly. The Differences in British and American EducationThere are some difference between British education and American education. Secondly, differences of character. Someone put the British character is described as: cold, reserved, introverted, conservative, intellectual rigor, gentleman of humor. Corresponding to the American character is characterized by warm, cheerful, adventure, innovative, bold alive, Frank humor. Because of British conservative and rigorous, they embodied in education is a rigorous style of study, improve the educational system. Americans diligently pursuit of freedom and equality, education is embodied in American education system having a plurality, openness to international,flexibility, make the education full of vigor and vitality. Thirdly, British has a long history, so the education system more perfect, the United States of America pay attention to scientific and technological development, pay more attention to the education innovation.5. ConclusionThere are some differences between British and American education.Undeniable, their education stand for top level in the world. Although there are many differences, but there are also many similarities. Such as they encourage students come into the society; to the nature learn knowledge, to be focus on human, pay attention to social practice education. In British and American higher education, more students to participate in, practice, create in classes, many courses are arranged with case studies and there are some discussion time, students centered in teaching activities. China pays attention to students‟ exam skill, China education manifests itself is suppressed, the conservative.
