So you want to draw money from a bank? Do it yourself. Want to fix a broadband internet connection? Do it yourself. Need a boarding card for your flight? Do it yourself. In theory, companies can save money by replacing human workers with automated self-service systems, while customers gain more choices and control and get quicker service. There is even talk of self-service doing for the service department what mass production did for factories, by enabling the delivery of services cheaply and on a massive scale. Surely the expansion of self-service into more and more areas is to be welcomed?
Not necessarily. When it is done well, self-service can do good to both companies and customers. But when done badly—who has not found themselves trapped in a series of endless touch—tone menus? In areas where self-service is only just started, this is less of a problem: angry customers can after all, always take their business elsewhere. But if every bank were to prefer self-service systems, customers would no longer be able to express their discount by voting with their feet. As a result, some banks, for example, already promise that their telephone-banking services always offer the choice of talking to a human operator. But in return for human service, many companies will simply charge more.
Another disagreement to self-service is that while it saves companies money, it does not always save their customers’ time. In the best cases, it does, of course: che cking yourself in at the airport can be quicker than queuing or making a phone call. But as more and more tasks are on to customers, they may start to hope for the days of old-fashioned service.
All of this suggests that there are limits to how far self-service can be taken. Companies that go too far down the self-service route or to do it incorrectly are likely to find themselves being punished. Instead, a balance between self-service and traditional forms of service is necessary. 1.From this passage, we can see that the writer the use of self-service technology.

D. makes carefully judgment on

B. Saving money for customers.
C. Offering customers extra money.
D. Defeating the traditional forms of service.
3.What does the w riter mean by saying “customers would no longer be able to express their discount by voting with their feet”?
A. customers would be so angry that they kick and damage the machine providing self-service.
B. customers would not be able to express their anger at the bank’s service by leaving there
C. customers would try their best to persuade the bank to stop self-service.
D. customers would elect some leaders to have a talk with the bank..
4.Which of the following statements does the writer agree to?
A. Banks should supply self-service and traditional forms of service as well.
B. Self-service in banks has so many week points and should be stopped.
C. Self-service can bring about many conveniences and should be supported.

On Friday June 21st,2013,the folks at the annual Sonoma County Fair in California celebrated the 25th anniversary of a rather unusual contest—one that crowns the “World's Ugliest Dog”!And while in most settings a title like this would be considered insulting (无礼的) here,it is liked by both the dog owners who come from all over the world and the visitors that come to cheer the contestants.
To mark this special anniversary, this year's fair that was themed “Dog Days of Summer”featured among other things, including an exhibit featuring the contestants and winners from the last 25 years.
As for the winner? Unlike last year, when he had flown in all the way from London,England, this year's title winner was Chico,California resident Walle, who beat out 29 other equally “ugly contestants”. The refreshing part was that Walle, who happened to be a last minute entrant(参赛者),is not a nearly hairless,Chinese Crested Chihuahua or a mix of both breeds, which have been dominating the contest for many years now. Instead,he is a mutt mix—part beagle, part basset and part boxer.
The four-year-old impressed the judges with his giant head and humped back. As one of them put it,he looked as though he had been photoshopped with pieces from various dogs and maybe a few other animals. It exactly represents the kind of natural “ugliness” they were looking for!
Along with the title, the first time entrant received a cash prize of $1,500 as well as scheduled appearances on NBC's weekend Today on Sunday, the Today Show on Monday and the Jimmy Kimmel Show
on Wednesday.
Though the competition may seem unbelievable to some people,it is held just for fun and organized by an animal psychiatrist who not only vets the dogs before they enter the competition to ensure they are healthy, but also has a “pet” talk with them to ensure they are also happy. It is also important to remember all the contestants come from homes where they are loved because of their rather unusual looks. After all, beauty is in the eye of the beholder!

It was one of the hottest days of the dry season. We had not seen rain in almost a month. The crops were dying. Cows had stopped giving milk. The streams were long gone back into the earth. If we didn't see some rain soon we would lose everything.
I was in the kitchen making lunch for my husband and his brothers when I saw my six-year old son, Billy, walking toward the woods. He was obviously walking with a great effort... trying to be as still as possible. Minutes after he disappeared into the woods, he came running out again, toward the house.
Moments later, however, he was once again walking in that slow purposeful long step toward the woods. This activity went on for over an hour: walking cautiously to the woods, then running back to the house. Finally, my curiosity got the best of me. I crept out of the house and followed him on his journey.
He was cupping both hands in front of him as he walked; being very careful not to spill the water he held in them. Branches and thorns slapped his little face but he did not try to avoid them. He had a much greater purpose. As I leaned in to spy on him, I saw the most amazing site.
Several large deer appeared threatening in front of him. But Billy walked right up to them.
I almost screamed for him to get away. And I saw a baby deer lying on the ground, obviously suffering from heavy loss of water and heat exhaustion, lift its head with great effort to lap up the water cupped in my beautiful boy's hand.
I stood on the edge of the woods watching the most beautiful heart I have ever known working so hard to save a life. As the tears that rolled down my face began to hit the ground, they were suddenly joined by other drops... and more drops... and more. I looked up at the sky. It was as if God, Himself, was weeping with pride.

First lady Michelle Obama turns 50 on Friday, Jan. 17, 2014.
Michelle Obama has spent the first half-century of her life breaking barriers and checking off a series of firsts. Now, as she reaches her milestone birthday Friday, the nation will be watching to see in what other areas she will leave her mark.
Five years after moving into the White House, and without a re-election campaign to worry about, she has more room to relax in her role and, political watchers say, possibly become more vocal (声音的) on political issues in the three years left in office.
So far, critics have complained about Michelle’s silence on issues where they expected to hear her voice: Last year, at the start of her husband's second term, she disappointed advocates for tighter gun-control measures after she failed to push harder on the issue in response to the massacre (残杀) at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. She also disappointed some feminists (女权主义者) who wanted her to defend their causes instead of falling back on her self-described role as the nation’s “mom-in-chief.” Nor did she handle racial issues during
her second term, as some had expected.
“The most important thing to remember is, whether you are black, white or Hispanic, you’re the first lady and the president of all the peop le in the United States. That’s a huge melting pot, so to reinforce (强化)that she's African American over anything else would not be wise,” said Anita McBride, who directs programming and national conferences on the legacies (遗产) of America’s first ladies a nd their historical influence at American University.
Valerie Jarrett, a top White House adviser and a close friend of the Obamas, said the first lady doesn't want to “spread herself too thin.”
“She really wants to have a maximum impact and to do that in fewer areas,” Jarrett told the Associated Press. “That, she said, “is better than trying to take on every single possible cause.”
But Robert Watson, a Lynn University professor, said he expects Obama to “go a little harder at issues” over the next several years. “Second-term first ladies usually feel more at ease to speak more forcefully about issues close to their heart,” he said.
Myra Gutin, a Ryder University communications professor and frequent lecturer on first ladies, said she expects Obama to continue making both of them a priority in her remaining years in the White House, given their success. Michelle launched the “Let’s Move” campaign in 2010. It in particular has gained widespread support, ranging from the National Football League to the Sesame Street franchise (特许), which even gave permission to the produce industry to use its licensed characters for free on fruits and vegetables.
“There’s no such thing as a traditional first lady, not anymore in this technology-filled world. Is Mr s. Obama cutting edge? Is she an activist? No. As first ladies go, I think she’s been politically careful because she does not want there to be a major flare-up that would require her husband to use his political capital to clean up,” she said. “But she’s not exactly just sitting in the White House pouring tea and having receptions, either.”
1、Critics were disappointed with Michelle because _______.
A.she didn’t put gun-control measures into effect
B.she failed some feminists to stand out to be a career woman
C.she didn’t solve some racial problems
D.she failed to voice her opinion on some issues
2、According to the professors or advisers, which of the following statements is NOT true?
A.It’s not wise to reinforce Michelle is African American over anythin g else.
B.It’s better for Michelle to have a maximum impact than to take on every possible
cause.
C.It's expected for Michelle to go a little harder at issues.
D.It’s a tradition for first ladies to stay out of political issues.
3、What does the underli ned phrase “spread herself too thin” in Paragraph 6 mean?
A.Try to do a lot of work at the same time.
B.Get very tired.
C.Try to improve physical fitness.
D.Move herself away from others.
4、In Paragraph 9, the campaign “Let’s Move” might be aiming to h elp people _______..
a. gain widespread support
b. become more physically active
c. have access to healthier foods
d. raise awareness about gun control
A.a, c B.a, b C.b, c D.c, d
【参考答案】1---4、DDAC。
