Halloween (万圣节)

In many countries around the world, the 31st of October is a day of spooky fun and excitement. This is the day when people celebrate Halloween, a festival with ancient roots and a unique blend of traditions. Let's dive into the magical world of Halloween and explore its customs and symbols, all while providing translations for some key terms in English.

History and Origins (历史与起源)

The origins of Halloween can be traced back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of summer and the beginning of winter. On this day, the Celts believed that the spirits of the dead would return to Earth and cause mischief. To ward off these spirits, they would light bonfires and wear costumes. This tradition eventually evolved into what we now know as Halloween.

Halloween roots lie in the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain which was celebrated in what is now Great Britain on a full moon around November 1st. Later the Roman Catholic Church named this day as All Saints Day, formerly known as All Hallowmas. All Saints Day is known in England as All Hallows' Day. The evening before All Saints' Day is All Hallows' Eve, the origin of the American word Halloween.

In Britain Halloween is celebrated on the 31st of October. However, it is not a public holiday. If the 31st of October falls on a weekday people go to work as normal. The typical colours of Halloween are orange and black, seen on items such as black vampires and pumpkin lanterns.

Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, is a widely celebrated festival that originated from ancient Celtic traditions. In this article, we will explore the history, customs, and significance of Halloween, as well as how it is celebrated in different parts of the world.

1. Origins of Halloween

Halloween is believed to have originated from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain, which marked the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. The Celts believed that during Samhain, the boundary between the living and the dead was blurred, and spirits could roam the Earth. To appease these spirits, people would leave food and offerings outside their homes and dress up in costumes to blend in with the spirits. This tradition later evolved into what we now know as trick-or-treating.

关于万圣节的英文资料

Next to Christmas, Halloween is the most commercialized celebration in the United States and Canada. This ancient festival originated far from North America however, and centuries before the first European set foot on the continent. One of these festivals was called Samhain (pronounced Sha-Von) and it took place on October 31 through to November 1. During this period, it was believed that the boundaries between our world and the world of the dead were weakened, allowing spirits of the recently dead to cross over and possess the living.

In Ireland, they originally also used turnips for their Jack Lanterns, but upon arriving in the new world, they discovered that pumpkins were abundant and easier to carve out. This yearly festival was adopted by the Roman invaders, who helped to propagate (传播, 宣传)it throughout the rest of the world (and at that time, the Roman Empire was the world).

Halloween is one of the oldest holidays with origins going back thousands of years. The holiday has had many influences from many cultures over the centuries. From the Roman's Pomona Day, to the Celtic festival of Samhain, to the Christian holidays of All Saints and All Souls Days.

Hundreds of years ago in what is now Great Britain and Northern France, lived the Celts (凯尔特人), who worshipped (崇拜) nature and had many gods, with the sun god as their favorite. They celebrated their New Year on November 1st which was made every year with a festival and marked the end of the "season of the sun" and the beginning of "the season of darkness and cold."

万圣节为每年的11月1日,10月31日被称为万圣节前夕,是西方传统节日。下面就由店铺来给大家简单的介绍一下万圣节吧! 【Halloween】

Hallowe’en is a popular festival in many countries all over the world, and every year it seems to get bigger.

It’s getting dark earlier and it’s starting to get cold. Christmas is stilla long way away. We need something to cheer us up and take our minds of the fact that winter is nearly here. See how much you know about the traditional festival of Hallowe’en.

【The origins of the name】

The festival of Hallowe’en has its roots in Celtic and Roman traditions. Over 2,000 years ago the Celts in Britain, Ireland and parts of France celebrated Samhain to mark the beginning of winter. When the Romans invaded, they merged this with Feralia, their celebration of the passing of the dead. As Christianity spread, the Church tried to replace these pagan feasts with official Church holy days. One of these was November 1. It was called “All Hallows”, and October 31 was known as“All Hallows’ Eve”, and then Hallowe’en.

halloween

one story about jack, an irishman, who was not allowed into heaven because he was stingy with his money. so he was sent to hell. but down there he played tricks on the devil (satan), so he was kicked out of hell and made to walk the earth forever carrying a lantern.

well, irish children made jacks lanterns on october 31st from a large potato or turnip, hollowed out with the sides having holes and lit by little candles inside. and irish children would carry them as they went from house to house begging for food for the village halloween festival that honored the druid god muck olla. the irish name for these lanterns was jack with the lantern or jack of the lantern, abbreviated as jack-o-lantern and now spelled jack-o-lantern.

the traditional halloween you can read about in most books was just childrens fun night. halloween celebrations would start in october in every elementary school.children would make halloween decorations, all kinds of orange-paper

jack-o-lanterns. and from black paper youd cut scary designs ---an evil witch with a pointed hat riding through the sky on a broomstick, maybe with black bats flying across the moon, and that meant bad luck. and of course black cats for more bad luck. sometimes a black cat would ride away into the sky on the back of the witchs broom. oh! heres a ghost. oh, theres a witch. oh, heres an old lady.
