It was true! There were dollar bills, one hundred of them, taped all over that tree. There was also a note attached: “IOU eight hours of digging time.Love,Marvin.”Marvin kept his promise, too. He dug up a nice tenbyfifteen foot bed for me.And my other children bought me tools, ornaments,a trellis,a sunflower stepping stone and gardening books. That was three years ago.My garden's now very pretty, just like I wanted. When I go out and weed or tend my flowers,I don't seem to miss my children as much as I once did.It feels like they're right there with me.I think about what my children did for me,and I get tears in my eyesevery time.I'm still not sure that money grows on trees. But I know love does!36.The author wasn't able to have a garden for many years because ______.A.there was no space for it in around the house in order to make things run smoothly. It's difficult for parents of nearly every family to teach their children to be responsible for housework.Home is where the school is.With one of or unable persons.Unless children believe they can succeed, they will never become totally independent. My daughter Carla's fifth grade teacher made every child in her class feel special. When students received less than a perfect test score, she would point out what they had mastered and declared firmly they could learn what they had missed. You can use the same technique when you evaluate your child's work at home.Don't always scold and give lots of praise instead.Praise your child every time he does something good or something right. If children receive praise for a job well done,it encourages them to do well the next time too.But if their efforts go unnoticed they will not bother to try so hard the next time.If you praise your child often, you will notice a dramatic improvement in your child's behavior over time.If your child completes a difficult task, reward him with a Sunday trip or a ball game with Dad.Learning is process of trying and failing and trying and succeeding. If medication, but not nearly as much as Alfred, who was just in the early stage of his recovery.“Right now I feel pretty young and I'm doing very well,” Anthony said.“I feel like a new person.”Alfred said 必修五 Module 1阅读理解提速练——练速度(限时:20分钟)A(2021·哈尔滨市第三中学一模)Babies don't learn to talk just from hearing sounds. They are lipreaders too. It happens during the stage when a baby's babbling (咿呀声) gradually changes from unclearvoices into that first “mama” or“dada”. The baby inorder to do like you has to figure out how to shape theirlips to make that particular sound they are hearing, according to developmental psychologist David Lewkowicz of Florida Atlantic University, who led the study.Apparently it doesn't take them too long to absorb the movements that match basic sounds. By their first birthdays, babies start changing back to look you in the eye again. It offers more evidence that quality facetime with babies is very important for speech development more than, say, turning on the latest baby DVD.But Lewkowicz went a step further. He and his student Amy HansenTift tested nearly 180 babies, groups of them at ages 4,6,8,10 and 12 months. How? They showed videos of a woman speaking in English or Spanish to babies of English speakers. They found that when the speaker used English, the 4montholds gazed mostly into her eyes. The 6montholds spent equal amounts of time looking at the eyes and the mouth. The 8and 10montholds studied mostly the mouth. At 12 months, attention started changing back toward the speaker's eyes. But what happened when these babies accustomed to English heard Spanish? The 12montholds studied the mouth longer, just like younger babies. They needed the extra information to recognize the unfamiliar sounds. That fits with research into bilingualism (双语) that shows babies' brains adjust themselves to distinguishing the sounds of their native language over other languages in the first year of life. The continued lipreading shows the1yearolds clearly still are fit for learning. Babies are so hard to study that this is “a fairly heroic data set”,says Duke University cognitive neuroscientist Greg Appelbaum, who found the research so fascinating that he wants to know more.语篇解读:本文是一篇说明文。

They wanted to make it different to separate themselves from the British in language,in the same way they separated themselves from the British government.rLFeK3gPCo Some American leaders proposed major changes in thelanguage.Benjamin Franklin wanted a whole new system of spelling. His reforms were not accepted. But his ideas did influence others. One was Noah Webster.rLFeK3gPCoWebster wrote language books for schools. He believed the United States should have a system of its own language as well as government.Webster published a dictionary of the American language in eighteen twenty eight. It established rules for speaking and spelling the words used in American English.rLFeK3gPCoWebster wrote that all words should be said in the order of the letters that spell them. This is why Americans use the letters“e-r”to end many words instead of the British“r-e.”He spelled the word“center,”for example,“c-e-n-t-e-r,”instead of theBritish“c-e-n-t-r-e.”rLFeK3gPCoWebster’s rule for saying every part of a word made American English easier for foreign settlers to learn. They learned tosay“waist coat,”for example, the way it is spelled instead of the British“wes kit.”rLFeK3gPCoThe different languages of many people who came to the United States also helped make American and British English different. Many of their foreign words and expressions became part of English as Americans speak them.rLFeK3gPCoSometimes Americans and British people do not understand each other because of different word meanings. For example, theword“jumper”in Britain means a sweater. In the United States,it is a dress. The British word“brolly” is an“umbrella”in America. And the British call potato chips“crisps”.All of these differences led British writer George Bernard Shaw to joke that Britain and America are two countries separated by the same language!rLFeK3gPCo 1.What does the underlined word“it”in the first paragraph refer to?rLFeK3gPCoA.Separating themselves from the British in language.rLFeK3gPCo B.Written English in America.C.Spoken English in America.D.Spoken English in Britain.2.Why did American want their language to differ from British English?rLFeK3gPCoA.Because they found British English hard to speak.rLFeK3gPCoB.Because they found British English hard to spell.rLFeK3gPCoC.Because they wanted to have their own language and government.rLFeK3gPCoD.Because foreign settlers wanted them to change their language.rLFeK3gPCo3.Why do Americans use the word“meter”instead of theword“metre”?rLFeK3gPCoA.Because Benjamin Franklin didn’t like theword“metre”.rLFeK3gPCoB.Because the word“meter”was absorbed from otherlanguages.rLFeK3gPCoC.Because Webster thought the word should be said in order of the letters that are spelt.rLFeK3gPCoD.Because Webster thought American English should be made easier for foreign settlers to learn.rLFeK3gPCo4.Which of the following is NOT one of the reasons why English began to change in America?rLFeK3gPCoA.The government leaders.B.Noah Webster.C.Immigration to America.D.The difficulty Americans had in understanding theBritish.rLFeK3gPCo5.What does the passage mainly talk about?A.Noah Webster’s simplifying the spelling of Englishwords.rLFeK3gPCoB.Differences and similarities between British and American English.rLFeK3gPCoC.The reasons why American English was formed and its development.rLFeK3gPCoD.Varieties of English throughout the world.错误!Module 2 A Job Worth DoingSection ⅡIntroduction & Reading and Vocabulary—LanguageStudyrLFeK3gPCoⅠ.品句填词1.Let me reassure you your service is quites____________.rLFeK3gPCo2.Her m____________in life was to work with thehomeless.rLFeK3gPCo3.We must r____________the traffic rules.4.Thank you for your o____________of help.5.She recognized that he was not ____________(合格的>for the post.rLFeK3gPCo6.The ____________(志愿者>for community service are doing a good job.rLFeK3gPCoⅡ.选词填空错误!rLFeK3gPCo1.The manager’s job is mainly to ____________ the activities of others.rLFeK3gPCo2.I ____________ his views, although I do not agree withthem.rLFeK3gPCo3.Is there anything ____________you’d like for dinner?rLFeK3gPCo 4.Any change in lifestyle will____________your health.rLFeK3gPCo 5.They ____________ him a very good job,but he turned itdown.rLFeK3gPCoⅢ.单项填空1.________ theory, everyone must obey the rules,but________practice,there are a few people who don’t obey therules.rLFeK3gPCoA.In;on B.On;inC.In;in D.On;on2.The spokesman never gave a________answer to any question of the reporters. They often talked some unconcerning things.rLFeK3gPCo A.straight B.closeC.clear D.direct3.
