圣女贞德
贞德(1412-1431),农民的女儿,她确信自己受上帝的指引,率领法国军队在奥尔良赢得重大胜利,打退在百年战争中企图征服法国的英格兰人。
当时法国的反抗斗争正处于最低潮的时候,此次战役的胜利大大鼓舞了法国人民。
一年之后被俘,英格兰人及其法国合作者对她威逼利诱,施以酷刑,都动摇不了她的意志,最后决定将她作为异教徒处以火刑。
1431年5月30日,她被带往鲁昂的旧市场广场,刽子手抓住她,把她推到火刑柱处,并点燃了柴堆。
一位多明我会修士安慰贞德,贞德请修士为她高举十字架,以便她能看见,并请他高呼灵魂得救,使她能听到他的呼喊高过火焰的咆哮。
直到最后,她还坚持说,她听到的声音是从上帝那里来的,这声音没有欺骗她。
根据1456年为贞德昭雪诉讼的记载,当时亲眼看到她死去的人大都对她的灵魂得救深信不移,都承认她是作为忠实的基督教徒而死的。
贞德是同胞心目中最伟大的民族英雄,她的功绩成为激励法国民族意识的决定性因素。
1920年5月16日,教皇追谥贞德为圣女,5月30日被定为她的节日。
1920年6月24日,法国议会颁布法令,每年5月第二个星期日为全国性节日,以纪念贞德。
