Beijing—The two–day Asia–Europe Meeting(ASEM)is expected to sign important documents today when it closes in Beijing.
The meeting is a timely call for leaders from the two continents to find a solution to lift their countries,if not the world, out of the present global financial crisis(dangerous situation).Europe has been more determined than the United States to get rid of the world’s present economic system. It wants to build a new,or second-generation system.
Asia and Europe built a new, equal partnership in 1996 when the first ASEM was held. The ASEM has 45 members that make up 57 percent of the world’s population.Their foreign trade makes up more than 60 percent of the world’s trade.
In 1997,when Asia was hit by a financial crisis, the second ASEM in 1998 attempted to support its Asian members. The establishment of the ASEM Asian Financial Crisis Response Trust Fund helped these countries to rebuild financial system and remove the influence on their societies.
The present financial crisis has affected more countries than the 1997 one.It is expected to inflict a heavy blow on the world.
ASEM is not good at dealing with financial problems.Still, developed and developing countries of the ASEM think differently about solutions to the financial crisis.Similarly,it is widely known that the European Union is divided over the issue.
As a result,it is unrealistic to expect a cure-all for the crisis from the Beijing ASEM.Ding Yuanhong, former China ASEM senior official, said that without the presence of the US no plans are practical. But the ASEM can serve as a platform for the two continents to communicate and exchange ideas.

Staring at the creature in the small cage at the shelter,Brain Gallagher—six-foot,254 pounds —knew he’d met his match. The dog’s black eyes stared back fearlessly and challengingly.“You don’t want this one,”a salesman said,“nothing but trouble.”
“I’m a policeman.”Gallagher shot back.“Trouble’s my business.”
“Yeah, well, this dog was leading a pack that was running wild.Nobody wants him.”The salesman pointed at a door to the room where animals are put to sleep.

阅读下面短文,然后按括号中的要求简要回答下面5个问题。

要求答语:结构正确、书写工整、字迹清晰。

When 7-year-old Braxton Bilbrey climbed out of the water at San Francisco’s Aquatic Park,a crowd greeted him.On Monday, the second-grader from Glendale,Arizona, became one of the youngest people ever to swim from Alcatraz to San Francisco. He completed the 1.4-mile swim in just 47 minutes.
“I think it’s pretty cool,”said Braxton,as he came out of the water. So how did a young boy come up with such a big idea?By reading: Braxton came across a magazine article about 9-year-old Johnny Wilson, who completed the breathtaking swim in a little less than two hours last October.Wilson’s story got Braxton thinking. He decided that the long swim from Alcatraz was something he’d like to try.
Alcatraz was once a federal prison that held some of the country’s best-known criminals.Today,it is a tourist site that receives about 1 million visitors each year.A number of athletes have swum the course from the former prison to San Francisco. When Braxton’s mom first heard her son’s idea, she wasn’t too excited. Her son’s determination, though, soon changed her mind.
“For a 7-year-old to be that motivated and stick with a goal that long is amazing,”said Stacey Bilbrey,Braxton’s mother.“He’s worked hard for it.”
Once he set a goal for himself,Braxton had to begin training. To prepare for the big swim, the 7-year-old began swimming two hours a day, four times a week.Braxton had company for Monday’s big swim,as his coach and two other adults swam alongside him.“If you were to ask me ifa 7-year-old is old enough to do it,I’d say maybe one out of 10 million,”said Joe Zemaitis.Braxton’s swim coach.“But he’s that one.”
After finishing his swim,Braxton was lifted out of the water by his father.
“He did so awesome,”said his dad,Steve Bilbrey.“I’m so proud of him.”
What’s next for Braxton? This second-grader already has his eye on a new goal—to swim the English Channel.

仔细阅读下面短文,然后用一句简短的话给每个段落写一个标题。

6.
For centuries, history textbooks used in American schools neglected the role of the black man in American life.Often, the books mentioned only George Washington Carver and Booker T.Washington as important black men in America’s past.As a result, many Americans do not yet know about other black men who also contributed to America’s past.
7.
Older American history books did not mention Benjamin Banneker,an important figure of Colonial days.Although he was a scientist, mathematician, and writer,Benjamin Banneker is best known for his role in helping to plan the nation’s capital. He was appointed by George Washington to serve on the committee that planned Washington,D.C.
8.
In earlier days, students did not learn that African-American inventors developed hundreds of new ideas. An important inventor was Granville T.Woods.He invented the automatic air brake used on railroad trains.Another African-American inventor,Jan Matzeliger, invented a machine that combined the many separate steps of shoe manufacture.Today,a multi-million-dollar shoe company uses his invention.
9.
African-Americans have also made important contributions to the field of medicine. In 1883,an African-American doctor,Dr.Daniel Hale Williams, performed the world’s first successful open-heart surgery. In the 1940s,Dr.Charles Drew developed the first useful system of blood banks.Dr.Percy Julian helped develop drugs used to treat persons suffering from arthritis.10.
Today, history textbooks are changing. In the last few years, educators, authors, and publishers have produced some textbooks that recognize the black man’s part in American history.More books are being planned. In this modern age,Americans have come to realize that the record of their history is not complete without the major contributions of black people to American life.

Is daily homework necessary?
Recently, our school students have had a discussion about whether it is necessary to have daily homework.Different students have different opinions.
Seventy percent of the students are willing to accept daily homework. They think homework helps them review what has been taught in class.Besides,by doing daily homework, students can better understand and memorize their lessons.Furthermore, their skills in managing time can also be improved through homework.
However, about thirty percent of the students have different ideas. They believe that homework reduces their amount of leisure time with their families, not to mention the time for other activities. What’s worse, they can’t get enough rest time.
From my point of view, daily homework is necessary, but it must serve a purpose and be fit for a student’s ability. Also, the amount of homework should be considered, for a student’s all-around development is more important than anything else in his or her life.。
