My daughter’s cheeks had never looked quite so rosy (红润的). Never before had she tried out a sauna(桑拿). In Britain, six year olds aren’t encouraged to do such things. In Finland, there’s one sauna for every three people.
We had never thought about coming to Finland before, and hadn’t actually heard of Tampere, the country’s second largest city. It’s actually less than two and a half hours away by plane, and has a population of 200,000. The Finns are advertising Tampere as the perfect destination (目的地) for an all-year round holiday. We arrived to be greeted (迎接) by a beautiful blanket of snow on the ground, but in the summer it’s hot, very green and perfect for outdoor trips.
The city is small and pretty, with some beautiful churches, good museums and a selection of tempting shops. Shopping options (选择) include a charming (有魅力的) Christmas market and, nearby in Lempaala, the Ideapark, with more than 100 stores and a great children’s activity centre where you can leave the kids and shop to your heart’s content (满足).
Our trip was packed with activities which would interest families—and that included two trips to a sauna which was in the middle of the woods, at Villa Amanda, around an hour away from the city centre. It is a beautiful, traditional Finnish cottage (小屋) situated on a lake and easily suitable for a couple of families to rent. We drank wine on the veranda (走廊) and were surprised at the views before trying out the villa’s personal sauna, which my daughter loved and had to be dragged (拉) away from.
