You have probably heard of the Mozart effect. It’s the idea tha t if children or even babies listen to music composed by Moza rt, they will become more clever. A quick Internet search, and you can find plenty of products to help you in the task. Whate ver your age, there are CDs and books to help you taste the p ower of Mozart’s music, but when it comes to scientific eviden ce that it can make you more clever, the picture is more mixe d.
The phrase “the Mozart effect” was made up in 1991, but it w
as a study described two years later in the journal Nature that made real media and public interested in the idea that listenin g to classical music somehow improves the brain. It is one of t hose ideas that sound reasonable. Mozart was undoubtedly a genius himself; his music is difficult to understand and there i s a hope that if we listen to enough of it, we’ll become more cl ever.
The idea took off, with thousands of parents playing Mozart to their children, and in 1998 Zell Miller, the Governor of the stat e of Georgia in the US, even asked for money to be saved in t he state budget (预
算) so that every newborn baby could be sent a CD of classic al music. It was not just babies and children who were played Mozart’s music on purpose, even an Italian farmer proudly ex plained that the cows were played Mozart three times a day to help them to produce better milk.
I’ll leave the debate on the effect on milk yield (产
量) to farmers, but what about the evidence that listening to M ozart makes people more clever? More research was carried out but sixteen different studies proved that listening to music does lead to a temporary improvement in the ability to handle shapes mentally, but the benefits are short-
lived and it doesn’t make us more clever.
63. What can we learn from Paragraph one?
A. Mozart composed many musical pieces for children.
B. Children listening to Mozart will be more intelligent.
C. There are few products on the Internet about Mozart’s m usic.
D. There is little scientific evidence to support Mozart effect.

B. Objective
C. Doubtful
D. Positive
65. What would be the best title for the passage?
A. Listening to Mozart, necessary?
B. What music is beneficial?
C. What is the Mozart effect?
D. To be or not to be?

Ernest Hemingway was not only a commanding figure in 20th-century literature, but was also a pack rat.He saved even his old passports and used bullfight tickets, leaving behind one of the longest paper trails of any author.
“Ernest Hemingway: Between Two Wars,” which opens on Fri day at the Morgan Library & Museum, is the first major museu m exhibition devoted to Hemingway and his work. The largest
and most interesting section focuses on the ’20s, Hemingway ’s Paris years, and reveals a writer we might have been in da nger of forgetting: Hemingway before he became Hemingway. The exhibition does not fail to include pictures of the bearded, manly, Hem.He’s shown posing with some kudu he has just s hot in Africa and on the bridge of his beloved fishing boat, the Pilar, with Carlos Gutiérrez, the fisherman who became the m odel for “The Old Man and the Sea.” But the first photo the vie wer sees is a big blowup of a handsome, clean-shaven, 19-year-
old standing on crutches. This is from the summer of 1918, w hen Hemingway was recovering from wounds at the Red Cros s hospital in Milan and trying to turn his wartime experiences i nto fiction.
The evidence at this exhibition suggests that, in the early day s, he often wrote in pencil, mostly in cheap notebooks but so metimes on whatever paper came to hand. The first draft of th e short story “Soldier’s Home” was written on sheets he appe ared to have snatched from a telegraph office. The impressio n you get is of a
young writer seized by inspiration and sometimes barreling a head without an entirely clear sense of where he is going.
F. Scott Fitzgerald (some of whose letters with Hemingway is
also on view) famously urged him to cut the first two chapters of “The Sun Also Rises,” complaining about the “elephantine f acetiousness” of the beginning, and Hemingway obliged, getti ng rid of a clunky opening that now seems almost “meta”. In 1 929, in a nine-
page penciled critique, Fitzgerald also suggested numerous r evisions for “A Farewell to Arms.” Hemingway took some of th ese, but less graciously, and soon afterward his friendship wit h Fitzgerald came to an end.
The papers at the Morgan show a Hemingway who is not alw ays sure of himself. There are running lists of stories he kept f iddling with, and there are lists and lists of possible titles, inclu ding the 45 he considered for “Farewell” and 47 different endi ngs for the novel.
In display case after display case, you see Hemingway during his Paris years inventing and reinventing himself, discovering as he goes along just what kind of writer he wants to be. In a moving 1925 letter to his parents, who refused to read “In Our Time,” his second story collection, he writes: “You see I’m tryi ng in all my stories to get the feeling of the actual life across — not just to describe life — or criticize it — but to actually ma ke it alive. So that when you have read something by me you actually experience the thing. You cant do this without putting
in the bad and the ugly as well as what is beautiful.”
By the time the Second World War broke out, Hemingway ha d solidified into the iconic figure we now remember: Papa. Ev en J. D. Salinger calls him this. And a blustery, cranky Hemin gway appears in 1949 wh
en aboard the Pilar he grabs an old fishing diary and begins s crawling an angry letter to Harold Ross, the editor of The New Yorker, complaining about Alfred Kazin’s review of “Across th e River and Into the Trees,” not, in truth, a very good book. Bu t, Hemingway, often drinkin
g and depressed, didn’t know it, his best work was behind him by then.
66. Which of the following is closest in meaning to the underli ned words “a pack rat” (para. 1)?
A. a person who doesn’t waste anything

C. a person who likes to collect rubbish
D. a person who e njoys collecting things
67. How many of Hemi
ngway’s works are mentioned in this passage?
A. 4
B. 5
C.6
D.7
68. We can conclude from the Morgan show that sometimes
Hemingway was a person .
A. unconfident but full of inspirations
B. stubborn but full of enthusiasm about love
C. casual but full of heroism
D. bad-
tempered but full of strange habits
69. What does the writer truly mean by saying “Hemingway b efore he became Hemingway”?
A. Hemingway wrote many masterpieces before he killed hi mself.
B. Hemingway was once a war correspondent before he be came a famous writer.
C. Hemingway devoted all his strengths to writing before he won the Nobel Prize.
D. Hemingway kept exploring the world and adjusting himse lf before he became a
commanding figure in literature.
70. According to the Morgan show, readers are likely to see in Hemingway’s works.

war fighters

第四部分任务型阅读(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最适当的单词。
注意:每空一个单词。
When young children are learning to ride a bicycle, they requir e that their parents hold on to the back of the bike so that they gain confidence and won’t fall off.
However, when children leave to go to college, or get married, parents must accept that their children are riding off into their own future. At this time, parents shouldn’t stand back and with the children gone, they are left with an empty nest. How can parents get through this period of life?
The first thing you should do is nothing at all. You should actu ally take some time to rest since your child was born. Just rela x and reward yourself for the work you put into your child. Taking some time for yourself will allow you to adjust to the ch ange and figure out how you really feel about your child’s dep arture (离
开). You shouldn’t compare how you feel with how other peopl e feel, as everyone’s experience of an empty nest is different. Exercise is a great mood lifter. A physical fitness program ma y have been one of the first sacrifices (牺
牲) you made when your child came along; now, with fewer d uties, you’ll have time to hit the gym regularly. If you have a fri end who also has become an empty nester recently, you may have found a new companion. Not only will you get the chanc e to share dealing with tips, you’ll also create social opportunit ies for yourself, which will get you out of that empty house if y ou need to.
We all have those things that we say we’ll do or learn “somed ay”. If you’re an empty nester, the “someday” might just be no w.
If you’re not sure exactly what to do in all your spare time, tak e your time and think about it. It will, however, probably be ea sier to figure out your dream when you’re out. Try exploring a nearby museum or attraction you’ve never visited.
Many parents may fear an e
mpty nest because they worry that their little birds have flown away forever. Try setting up a regular phone date with your ch ild. A once-a-
week call may make you feel satisfied while giving your child
a reasonable degree of freedom.

Dear Principal Wang,
I am a senior one student. I have known that the playground o f our school will be rebuilt recently. I love sports very much, so I can’t help writing to you on this matter.
Here are my suggestions for the new playground. According t
o what I have seen before, many students like to play table te nnis between classes, but there are not enough such tables, s o please add some more for us. Besides, it will be better if the basketball court is built away from the gate of the gym, in cas e the basketball hurts students who enter or go out of the play ground. What’s more, I hope that an indoor pool will be set up , for swimming is not only a kind of good exercise, but also a li ving skill. In the end, we will be happy if we can take exercise on the new playground on weekends as well.
I am looking forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely,
