Coca-
cola is probably the most famous brand in the word, and in so me areas you can even access it easier than clean drinkable water. Although the company is trying to present itself as a he alth-
conscious company, you can’t really say that drinking cola is healthy for you. Still, we all drink cola, some more and some l ess, and we tell ourselves that it’s all okay as long as we don’t overdo it. However, Coca-
Cola has other functions besides drinking.
Cola removes the tarnish (暗
锈) from old pennies. Got some old rusty pennies? Not to worr y! Put them inside a glass of cola and let them rest for a while. When you get them out, you’ll have shiny pennies that will lo ok as if they were coined a couple of days ago. If you couldn’t clean those pennies with industrial acids, just buy a can of co la and let it do its magic!
You can remove gum from your hair with cola. If you’ve got gu m stuck in your hair and don’t know a better way to get it out, don’t worry, you won’t have to cut it. Just pour some cola into a bowl and dip the part of your hair with gum on it inside. Leav e it for a couple of minutes and then simply wipe off the gum. You can make an exploding fountain. You probably know abo ut this one. You can make an exploding fountain by putting a mint(薄荷糖) inside a two-
liter bottle. Then move away from the bottle and get ready for a Coca-
Cola explosion. This is a fun thing to do, but it is also a warnin g ---
don’t eat a mint and drink cola at the same time, because a si milar thing could happen to your stomach.
28. What does the underlined part in Paragraph 1 simply?
A. The expense of Coca-Cola is low.
B. Coca-Cola enjoys great popularity.
C. Coca-Cola is safe for people to drink.
D. Coca-Cola is easier to get than drinkable water.
29. What can cola be used to do?
A. Improve people’s hair.
B. Dissolve the gum.
C. Make pennies shiny.
D. Take the place of acids.
30. Why can’t we eat a mint and drink cola at the same time?
A. It can cause harm to our stomach.
B. It might make our s tomach smaller.
C. Mints with cola will produce heat.
D. The mint will releas
e poisonous substances.
31. What’s the main idea of the text?
A. The major ingredients of Coca-Cola.
B. Why Coca-Cola is popular among the young.
C. Some of the strangest uses of Coca-Cola.
D. Why we can’t drink Coca-Cola too often.
D
It seems that the great desire among the young is to be po pular. The desire to be popular can force you into looking and acting like everyone else. You can lose yourself in a sea of id entical hairstyles and thinking styles.
I was forced to think about popularity not too long ago in a t alk I had with my daughter. Margy had to change schools whe n my busy work schedule made it necessary for me to move h ouses. I suppose that, for a girl in her teens, entering a new s chool is like spending a season alone in the tropical jungles. A
t least that’s how Margy found it at first. However, as the scho ol year drew to a close, one student after another came to her . I told Margy that I would have been more concerned if she h ad been an instant social success in her new school. Nobody can please everyone. If you try to do so, you will find values a s lasting as soap bubbles blown into the air.
Some teenagers claim they want to dress as they please. B ut they all wear the same clothes. They set off in new directio ns in music. But somehow they all end up listening to the sam e record. Their reason for thinking or acting in a certain way is that the crowd is doing it. They have come out of their cocoo n into a larger cocoon.
I know that it has become harder for a young person to sta nd up against the popularity wave.
Our way of life makes a young nonconformist stand out like a Martian. These days there’s a great barrier for the young pers on who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is wo rth climbing over. You may want to listen to classical music in stead of going to a party. Well, go to it. Be yourself. Popularity will come with the people who respect you for who you are. T hat’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.
32. Why was the author worried about his daughter’s popularit y in her new school?
A. She might find no true friends.
B. She would ignore her ac ademic performance.
C. She had no idea of her own.
D. She might betray her tru
e self.
33. What does the author think of most teenagers?
A. They’re afraid of getting lost in life.
B. They have difficulty understanding each other.
C. They lack the courage to be truly different.
D. They find it hard to gain popularity as expected.
34. What is the probably meaning of the underlined word “ no nconformist” in Paragraph 4?
A. Someone who cares about others’ opinion.
B. Someone w ho desires popularity greatly.
C. Someone who behaves in his own way.
D. Someone who wants to please others.
35. What is the author’s purpose of writing this passage?
A. To persuade readers to pursue valuable popularity.
B. To tell parents how to guide their children.
C. To criticize the presents values and beliefs.
D. To suggest a good way to be popular.
