When Buffett was asked about the secret to his success, he said that he read every day—500 pages, to be exact. FindingYourElement written by Ken Robinson
This world often wants us to follow a certain life plan. If you don't know what your passion is, it just means you haven't discovered it yet. Or maybe it just disappeared early in life. Before Ed Sheeran became the Grammywinning and 150 million albumselling Ed Sheeran, he was just another struggling artist. He was playing in small clubs, knocking on doors and being told no over and over again—following a seemingly impossible dream.
But Sheeran decided to take a risk on himself, buying a oneway ticket to Los Angeles in 2010 after booking one gig (特约演奏). Looking for other gigs led to playing on Jamie Foxx's radio show and to using the recording studio in Foxx's home for free. And sleeping on Foxx's couch (长沙发).
“Within a month,” Sheeran said, “of going there, with zero confidence, and ending up in one of the biggest movie stars in the world's house, recording...in my mind, I was like, ‘I must have something.’ So, going back to England, I had this chargedup battery...and started making records, doing tours all over...”
Staying the course in the face of struggle and rejection (拒绝) is hard.
That's where Foxx stepped in for Sheeran. “‘You're great,’” Foxx recalled telling Sheeran. “I said, ‘I know you don't have anywhere to go, so you can take a rest here.’”
Most people give up in the face of adversity (逆境)—even if they are smarter, better connected, more talented or better funded than you. Success often comes down to perseverance (坚持). You can't win if you aren't around at the end.
You don't have to offer your couch. But you can be kind. You can offer a word of encouragement to a struggling friend. You can offer a little help to a struggling connection. Behind every startup is a person with a dream: a person living on couches and depending on strangers being kind. Once in a while, be one of those strangers because a little help may be all a person needs to keep going.
24.How was Ed Sheeran before he went to Los Angeles?
A.He became wellknown in clubs.
B.He started to step into the music industry.
C.He wasted many chances to be successful.
D.He nearly had no hope of making progress.
25.What did Foxx do to help Ed Sheeran?
A.He gave him some money. B.He found a job for him.
C.He held tours for him. D.He offered his couch.
26.When Ed Sheeran left Los Angeles, he ________.
A.was satisfied with his achievements B.was uncertain about his future
C.was confident about himself D.was upset with Foxx
27.What does the author want to share in Paragraph 6?
A.Two heads are better than one. B.A friend in need is a friend indeed.
C.Where there is a will, there is a way. D.In time of danger, one's mind works fast.

[2022·龙岩高一上期末] Companies in China are welcoming a hybrid work model (混合工作模式), which brings opportunities to creativity. And it is also a passive method for disease control and prevention, industry officials said.
About 45 percent of companies in China are providing remote (远程的) work opportunities, higher than the average level in the Asia Pacific region of 41 percent. Over 57 percent of employees like the hybrid work idea, with the preferred choice as three working days in the office and two at home, according to a survey from Linkedin, a workplace site with 50 million users in China.
Hybrid work offers benefits such as reduced time and energy spent commuting (通勤) and opportunities to hire from a global talent pool, said Wendy Purcell, Research Scholar at Harvard University. He shared opinions with Chen Yubo, Tsinghua professor and top executive of Trip Group.
Shanghaibased Trip com, the country's biggest online tourism service provider, has already begun a hybrid work model. It asks employees in different departments to come to the office on certain dates, which may become a companywide policy, said Jane Sun, Trip's CEO.
As long as productivity is not negatively affected, employees may save two hours of commuting time, and engineers can have flexibility (灵活性) in their work, and it “strengthens our culture and gives them more job satisfaction”, Sun said.
Hybrid work helps connect employees spread across different regions. It also promotes social equality. “Talented employees who are working in Shanghai and Beijing now may go to work in relatively lessdeveloped big cities like Chengdu, Wuhan, Xi'an, and Chongqing in the future,” Tsinghua professor Chen said.
But there is no onesizefitsall model in hybrid work, especially in Chi na. Chen agreed to embrace hybrid work but not give up the traditional model, as many jobs in China need trust and relationship that are built in an office.
Hybrid work is “the biggest change to how we work in our generation,” according to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella.
28.Which is true about the hybrid work model?
A.It will be the future work model.
B.It demands employees to work at home.
C.It's popular with companies in China.
D.It's the result of disease control and prevention.
29.What may be the advantage of the hybrid work model?
A.It will reduce the working time. B.It helps build up trust and relationship.
C.Employees can be more creative. D.Employees can work in between two cities.
30.Why does the writer state different people's opinions?
A.To enrich the text. B.To support his idea.
C.To make a comparison. D.To attract the readers.
31.What's the author's attitude to the new model?
A.Doubtful. B.Negative. C.Unclear. D.Supportive.

[2022·厦门高一质检] Computers have become amazingly exact at translating spoken words to text messages and searching a large supply of valuable information for answers to difficult questions. At least, that is, so long as you speak English or other world's main languages. But try talking to your phone in Yoruba, Igbo or any number of widely spoken African languages and you'll find difficulty in accessing information, trade and other benefits of the global tech economy.
American tech giants don't have a long history of making their language technology work well outside the wealthiest markets, a problem that has also made it harder for them to discover dangerous misinformation on their platforms. Google, for instance,
upset members of the Yoruba community when its language app mistranslated a nice African god as a devil. Part of the reason is that there's just not enough online data in those languages for the AI systems to effectively learn how to get better at understanding them.
“We are getting to the point where if a machine doesn't understand your languag e, it will be like it never existed,” said Vukosi Marivate, who has devoted some of his AI research to the southern African languages of Xitsonga and Setswana. “Considering our history, some of the bias (偏见) is intentional. The history of the African continent and in general in colonized (殖民化的) countries, is that when language had to be translated, it was translated in a very narrow way,” Marivate added.
However, Google and Microsoft are among the companies that say they are trying to improve technology for socalled “lowresource” languages that AI systems don't have enough data for. Computer scientists at Meta announced a breakthrough on the path to a “universal translator” that could translate multiple languages at once and work better with lowerresource d languages. Meanwhile, Marivate and other researchers have founded a research project across Africa. Increasingly, people are joining hands to develop a variety of language approaches.
32.What can we learn from Paragraphs 1 and 2?
A.Yoruba and Igbo are widely spoken in the world.
B.English speakers fail to access online information.
C.The online data of African languages is limited.
D.Computers can translate all text messages exactly.
33.Why does the author mention “Google” in Paragraph 2?
A.To make a prediction. B.To draw a comparison.
C.To reach a conclusion. D.To give an example.
34.What is Marivate's attitude towards “American tech giants”?
A.Friendly. B.Unconcerned. C.Dissatisfied. D.Proud.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Joint Efforts to Improve AI in African Languages
B.Computers Good at Translating Spoken Language
C.US Tech Giants Misunderstand African Languages
D.African Researchers Exchange Ideas with Tech Giants

[2022·保定高一上期末] Thick snowflakes swirled (旋转) around my car. Everything around me was white. The light was fading (变暗) as the sun set over the rocky peaks.
I was driving up a mountain pass on what was supposed to be a fourhour trip from Red River, New Mexico, to Durango,Colorado, I drove slowly along on a winding, unfamiliar road in a snowstorm. I was on my way to meet my friend Jane, who was in Durango. I was so excited about the weekend that I left without checking the weather.
Thirty minutes into my drive, the snow had started.Gentle snow at first. I thought about turning around. But it hardly looked threatening, so I continued. Now I regretted that decision. But it was too late. The road was too narrow and icy for me to turn around. The snow was bad, getting worse. The only way out was forward, higher and higher into the mountains. The last bit of sunlight disappeared, and I couldn't see anything beyond the few feet lighted by my headlights.
My cell phone had lost service as soon as I'd entered the mountain. I couldn't call for help. The clothes were in my luggage. Maybe I could find a place to pull over and wear more clothes until morning. Would that be enough to keep me warm all night? How long would it take for someone to find me? “Everything will be fine,”
I whispered.
Then I noticed a pair of lights seemed to glow dimly (朦胧地) through the snowstorm.
I opened my eyes wide hard and then looked ahead. There they were. Taillights! There was a car in front of me! At least someone was here with me. Focus on the lights, I told myself, not your fear. I followed my guide for at least another half hour as we continued to pass the mountain.

W: Yes, I'll write down the time.
(Text 2)
W: Do you mind if I open the window to let in some fresh air?
M: Sorry. Please don't. I've caught a cold.
(Text 3)
W: Did you say sorry to your teacher, Mike?
M: Why must I?
W: You were late this morning.
M: But I wasn't. When I got to school, I was just on time for class.
(Text 4)
M: Miss Dermott, let me ask you straight away. Do you think, within a few years, many people could work at home instead of working in offices?
W: Oh, yes. It's happening now. You see, the communication industry has made such progress in the last ten years.
(Text 5)
M: Hello! May I speak to Mrs Arnold?

(Text 6)
W: Why don't we buy a car, dear?
M: I have been thinking about it for a long time. I think it necessary for us to buy one. We live so far away from my company.
W: Yes. With a car, you wouldn't have to catch a bus to work. It can save a lot of time.
M: Sure, but we don't have enough money at present.
W: Why not borrow some from the bank? I think we won't have to borrow so much now.
M: Well, let's go downtown and have a look.

W: I'm afraid Mr. Milton is not on duty tomorrow. He'll be here the day after tomorrow. That's Thursday, March 27th.
M: Fine.
W: Will 5:20 be all right?
M: Well, yes. But what time is the clinic closed?
W: We start from 9:00 a.m. and close at 7:00 p.m. on weekdays. We don't work at the weekend.
M: I'd prefer a later time so that I can come along after work.
W: Then what about 6:15?
M: Well, that's fine.
(Text 8)
W: Was the telephone ringing?
M: I didn't hear anything.
W: I thought I heard it ring two or three times.
M: Sometimes when the windows are open, you can hear the neighbours' phone.
W: Well, I'm expecting an important phone call, and I don't want to miss it.
M: Is it anything I should know about?
W: Not really. It has something to do with work and doesn't really affect us here at home.
M: Why don't you go out ahead and do what you want to do outside? I'll call you if the phone rings for you.
W: Thanks. I think I will. I've been waiting so long now I'm getting nervous.
I need to relax outdoors.
(Text 9)
W: Let me help you to some more fish.
M: The fish is delicious. But I've had enough now. I'd like to have some soup.
W: Here it is. Help yourself.
M: Thanks. I didn't know you were so good at cooking. If my wife were here, she would be surprised as I am.
W: Well, bring your wife too if you come here next time. I haven't seen her for quite some time.
M: Sure, I will. My wife will be very happy to see you, too. Well, I'm full now. Thank you for your wonderful meal.
W: I'm glad you enjoyed it.

Good morning and welcome to the BBC news special.
Have you ever heard of a four-year-old college student? But this is true of Nicholas MacMahon, who is now studying at college because he is too clever for school.
Nicholas spoke well before he was one. At eighteen months he took telephone message for his parents. At two he began to learn French. The strange thing about Nicholas is that he taught himself to read before he could speak.
His parents knew immediately that he could read. When he could speak, he corrected his spelling. He tried two different schools, but he was bored and unhappy and his parents decided that he couldn't stay there. His parents did not have enough time to prepare special lessons for Nicholas. The MacMahons had no idea what to do with him. Then the West London Institute offered to help. Nicholas spends some of his time there, and also studies at home. He reads a newspaper every day, and he can play the violin well, he doesn't have any social life in the school. Nicholas is a clever child and the teachers want to help him in every way.
