Unit3 Study skills 教案
Analysis of teaching material
Study skills of this unit introduce the differences between British English and American English. It also presents some exercise for the students to practice. Analysis of students
The students have met British English and American English when reading, but they can’t distinguish the differences between them sometimes.
Teaching aims and learning objectives
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:
1. know the differences between British English and American English;
2. use British English and American English correctly.
Teaching contents
Differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, spelling and grammar.
Focus of the lesson and predicted area of difficulty
To learn the differences in vocabulary and spelling.
Teaching procedures
Step 1 Lead-in
1.Play a game
2. An invitation
T: One day, Hobo and Eddie were watching TV at home. Just then, Postman Pat came. He brought Hobo and Eddie a mail. It was an invitation.
Dear Hobo and Eddie:
We sincerely invite you to our robot show.
By then, there will be many robots from different countries. Some
are specially designed to make delicious food, and other robots are
designed to help students do their homework.
We expect you to come.
Place: Times Square, New York, the USA
Date: 7-8 June 2019
Robot Show Centre
T: Hobo and Eddie were very willing to go to the USA.
They could not only enjoy the robot show but also visit their e-friend, Snoopy.
So they booked two air tickets at once.
But while they stayed in the USA, they met some problems.

Step 2 Differences in vocabulary
1.On the first day
T: What happened on the first day? Guess!

T: After arriving at the hotel, Hobo and Eddie felt very hungry. Read
the following dialogue and find out what happened to them.
Hobo and Eddie: Excuse me, where is the dinning room?
One American: It’s on the first floor.
Several minutes later ...
Hobo and Eddie: Where is the restaurant? There’s a health center on the first floor. S: Do you know why? In America, they call the ground floor the first floor.
2.Differences in vocabulary
T: Look at the screen and find the differences between British English and American English in vocabulary.
T: Put each of the words into the proper box.

Step 3 Differences in pronunciation
1. On the second day
T: On the second day, Hobo and Eddie came to the robot show. They saw many robots.
Hobo was interested in the one that was good at telling jokes. Now listen to one of the
jokes: One day, on a train, an Englishman met an American. The American is outgoing and willing to making friends with others. After some greetings, he
as ked the Englishman, “What’s your job?” The Englishman answered, “I’m a clerk.” The American said in surprise, “Clock? Your job is to tick tick all day long?”
T: Hobo couldn’t understand the joke. How about you?
T: Yes. The pronunciation of “clerk” in British English is similar to that of “clock” in American English.

T: Take turns to read the words on the screen to your partner.

Step 4 Differences in spelling
1.On the third day
T: On the third day, after the robot show, Hobo and Eddie walked around Times Square to buy a gift for Snoopy. There they were surprised to find some spelling mistakes on the advertising boards, e.g. theater, neighbor, color, jewelry and center. Are they really spelling mistakes?
T: They are spelling differences between British English and American English.
