2024年苏州市巴城中学高二上10月月考英语试题
一、阅读理解
Academic Year Language Arts
This course focuses on close-reading and analysis paired with academic writing. Students learn thetorical(修辞的)analysis: how to recognize the “tools”an author uses to create certain effects in their writing. Students learn and apply these skills in the first trimester (Weeks l-12) by studying several short stories from The Best American Short Stories of the Century, coupled with a study of the book How to ReadLiterature Like a Professor. In the second trimester (Weeks 13-24), students continue improving their thetorical analysis skills by examining several challenging texts.
In the final trimester (Weeks 25-36), students will use what they've been developing to write their own essays.
What is encouraged in class?
·Close-reading and discussion of very challenging literary texts
·Targeted study of professional, published writing and in-class practice of academic writing skills
·Feedback on writing, including one-on-one conferencing with the teacher and group workshops
Homework
Throughout the year, students draft and revise several long-term writing projects.
Students will work on these projects mostly in class, but they'll also be expected to complete some writing at home. At the end of the year, students will choose one of these projects to revise and polish. Besides, students will also complete short reading tasks at home that will be discussed in class.
Teachers' feedback
Since students will complete most of their writing in class, there'll be many chances for the teacher to provide face-to-face feedback immediately while students are working. At the end of-each multi-week project, students will hand in their final drafts and receive detailed, formal written feedback from their teacher.
Exams

This will be an important year for pioneers developing electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft (垂直起降飞机), popularly known as flying taxis. Several firms are hoping their
craft can obtain the necessary certification in 2023 to start commercial production, getting ready for the first passenger services.
Air taxis generally carry fewer than half a dozen passengers. They land and take off vertically using multiple small rotors (旋翼). With clever software controlling the rotors, they are easier to fly and readily capable of autonomous flight. The plentiful number of rotors also helps with safety, as the aircraft can continue to fly if one or more fail.
Some designs use an extra rotor or two at the back to push the aircraft along during flight. Others, like that produced by Joby Aviation, have rotors like a set of small wings providing lift, making more efficient use of the aircraft's battery and increasing range.
After thinking hard about how to certify(授予专业合格证) these flying machines, regulators(监管者) have been working with developers on safety standards. This is a multi-stage process. Besides obtaining “type” approval, which shows the airworthiness of a new type of aircraft, factories must be certified before production can begin in volume. And an airline-style licence is required if paying passengers are to be carried. Companies are working hard to get these approvals. Piloted operations are expected to be approved before autonomous flights.
In Germany, Volocopter will be flight-testing a family of eVTOLs. The firm is hoping its smallest, the two-seater V oloCity, can be certified in time for the 2024 Olympics in Paris, where the plan is to operate trips between airports and the athletes' village. Other air-taxi firms also hope to provide services in Paris, or at the World Expo, which takes place in Japan in 2025.

A.Fewer passengers.B.Smarter software.C.More rotors.
D.Smaller wings.
9.What can we say about the certifying process of eVTOL aircraft?
A.Efficient.B.Complicated.C.Confusing.D.Creative. 10.What does Volocopter expect of its V oloCity?
A.It will defeat air taxis from other firms.B.It will participate in the next World Expo.
C.It will conduct piloted operations in 2025.D.It will provide services for the 2024 Olympics.
11.Which would be the best title for the text?
A.The future of transportation B.The development of flying craft
C.A green vehicle takes flight D.The air taxi is coming
“Who’s a good reader? It’s you, isn’t it?” This is a typical example of “parentese (父母语)”. Recent research suggests that parents speaking parentese to their babies can give their language development a serious boost. In the study, researchers found that teaching parents how to speak proper parentese enhanced their ability to communicate with their babies — and even improved the children’s long-term language skills.
Parentese is distinct from conventional baby talk, which mostly relies on silly sounds and made-up words. In the 1960s, scientists studying speech patterns across different languages noticed a unique style that adults used addressing young children. This language was characterized by simple words and grammar, high pitch (音调) and a much slower speed. The baby-directed speech was first named “motherese” before it was called “parentese”.
Later research showed parentese is grammatically correct, with real words and phrases, which helped babies differentiate between words and process what was being said. “We’ve known for some time that use of parentese is associated with improved language outcomes, but we didn’t know why,” says Patricia K. Kuhl, the study’s senior author. But Kuhl thinks the new research suggests why parentese helps babies learn language skills.
“We now think parentese works because it's a social attraction for the baby brain,” she says. “Its high pitch and slower speed are socially engaging and invite the baby to respond.”
All 71 families in the new study had their children equipped with a special coat with an audio recorder built in. During four separate weekends when the babies were 6, 10, 14 and 18 months old, the researchers recorded all of the interactions between family members and the babies. The 48 families who were randomly selected for a course in parentese learned about ways to include more parentese in conversation.
And even though all of the participating families used some form of parentese at the start of the study, the babies of parents who received coaching showed the most improvements in their conversation skills. Beyond that, those babies had a 100-word vocabulary compared with the control group, who only knew 60 words at 18 months.
12.Which aspect of the study does paragraph 1 focus on?
A.Its aim.B.Its result.C.Its procedure.D.Its participants.
13.What did scientists find about parentese in the 1960s?
A.It was easy to follow.B.It was unique to mothers.
C.It was full of made-up words.D.It was similar to traditional baby talk. 14.What does Kuhl say about parentese?
A.It teaches babies more social skills.B.It inspires babies to speak more.
C.It has short-term effects on babies.D.It helps babies differentiate words and
phrases.
15.Which of the following describes the 48 families?
A.The parents knew more parentese skills.
B.Their babies grasped 60 words at 18 months.
C.The parents failed to use parentese through the study.
D.Their babies received more coaching on a 100-word vocabulary.
Saving Money on Holiday Travel
The holiday season isn’t just about shopping and gifts. 16 However, holiday travel can get expensive fast faster than you can imagine. Fortunately, the following tips will help you keep your travel spending under control.
• Plan ahead. The earlier you book your travel, from flights to hotels, the easier it is to find good deals. 17 In fact, many experts point out that you should book travel about one to three months earlier so that you can have more opportunities to find the best deals and you know what you will be doing.
• Book your air travel on cheaper days. Travelling by air on Tuesdays and Wednesdays often costs less than travelling on Fridays and Sundays. During the holidays, though, it’s not just about a specific day of the week. 18 Days immediately before and after a holiday can be expensive. If you can adjust your plans so that you can travel on Thanksgiving Day or Christmas Day, you might be able to find an even better deal.
• Consider travelling overnight. Overnight flights often cost less than those at more convenient times. 19 Depending on where you are going, and the options of how to get there, overnight travel can help you avoid a night in the hotel, as well as save your money on travel to your destination.
• 20 You can’t bring liquids with you on the plane, but you can bring sandwiches and other snacks. When you’re on the road, you can buy food at local groceries to make your own meals. If you are staying in a hotel for a long time, consider cooking your own food, especially if you have access to a microwave.
A.Bring your own food.
B.Consider affordable accommodations.
C.Booking earlier can also save your money.
D.If you are flying, consider alternative airports.
E.You also need to consider the days surrounding the holiday.
F.A great deal of travel also takes place during this time of the year.
G.Other alternatives include sleeper trains, as well as overnight ferries.

At Piedmont Middle School, a kid could run track or play tennis, but everyone wanted to be on the soccer team. The day Laura joined the team as a sixth-grader, she felt like she could fly. But, unfortunately, her joy didn't last. She spent most of the season on the bench.
Walking to the car after the last game of the season, Laura tried to smile at her mother. Having spent yet another game sitting on the bench, Laura hadn't even broken a sweat. "Well, at least you don't have to wash my uniform," she joked, but she could feel tears in her eyes.
"Cheer up,” her mother said, "you'll have another chance, Laura.”
Laura could only shake her head as she climbed into the backseat.
Lying in bed that night, Laura thought back to her first game, the day of her huge mistake.
"Pass, pass, pass!”
"Clear that ball!"
V oices yelled from every side. Laura ran nervously in front of the goal as both teams charged down the field. Green and blue uniforms swirled around her, and Laura could barely keep track of the ball. Then, suddenly, it came her way!
"Laura, I'm open!" one of her teammates called from near the sideline. A quick, easy pass and the ball would be away from their goal. Danger over! Laura drew back her foot and kicked.
But the ball went in the completely wrong direction! Straight to an enemy in blue, who quickly shot it into the corner of the net, scoring. As the other team high-fived(击掌祝贺), Laura was so embarrassed that she didn't dare to look into the eyes of her own teammates.
The coach had benched Laura for the rest of the game. When her team lost I-0, she was heartbroken. Now that the season was over, she just wanted to forget about soccer. She told her mom in tears that she was a failure and would quit the team the next day.
