The Double Ninth Festival is celebrated on the ninth day of the ninth lunar (阴历的) month, and it is also called the Chongyang Festival. People celebrate this festival in many different ways.
Go mountain climbing
People like to climb mountains at this festival. It is a good time for sightseeing.
Drink chrysanthemum wine
Chrysanthemum blooms in September. At the Double Ninth Festival, people appreciate chrysanthemum flowers and drink chrysanthemum wine. They believe (相信) that the wine is good for the health.
Wear cornel
It is also the traditional custom to wear cornel. Cornel is a kind of plant. Women used to stick the flower in their hair or hang cornel’s branch on windows or doors to avoid evil (避免邪恶).
Eat Chongyang cakes
The tradition of eating Chongyang cakes in September is originated from the ancient times. Chinese name for cake is Gao. It’s a nine-layered cake which means people moving to a high level.
Visit elderly relatives
In 1890, Double Ninth Festival became the Seniors’Day officially. You can visit your ancestors’graves, or simply spend time with your elderly relatives.
