It was 7:15 a. m. on Monday, and Frank, an engineer, was on his morning run along the East River. Suddenly, something caught his eyes-a large 60-year-old man balancing on the
four-foot-high railing (栏杆) that guarded the path from the water. Curious and confused, Frank stopped to get closer to the scene, only to find the man took a step forward and dropped into the dark river below.
When Frank reached the railing, the man was struggling in the water, clearly unable to swim. He screamed desperately for help as the current pulled him away from the bank.
By now, a crowd had gathered on land. People had called the police, but it was unclear when they’d get there. Without hesitation, dropping his phone and keys on land, Frank jumped in. Just as the old man was losing strength, Frank grabbed hold of him. Unexpectedly, the strong wind forced the water to tear them apart again.
Having seen what had happened, another two joggers made a quick response. They dived from where they stood into the river, and swam towards the pair, who were about 30 yards from the seawall. Immediately they caught up to the old man. The three stabilized him, with one supporting his back and the other two holding him up from either side. However, the old man was unresponsive, but not unconscious. As the men made their way towards the seawall that stretched for blocks in each direction, Frank had an awful realization: With the water flowing a good eight feet below the lip of the wall and no ladder or dock in sight, there was no way out of the river. ”A rescue boat is on its way, “ someone yelled to them. The old man, who was six foot two and weighed around 260 pounds, was deadweight in his rescuers’ arms, which meant they could only use their legs to save themselves. They were almost out of energy at that point.

John, whose parents were addicted to alcohol, was always failing in exams. Although he had been failing every year, he was still passed on from grade to grade and now he was a student of the seventh grade. John was tall, but he went completely unnoticed by the school teachers until Miss Smith.
Miss Smith was smiling, young and beautiful. John liked her. Despite this, he still continued to fail. He never did his homework, and he was always in trouble with Miss Smith. When he was punished for failing to hand in his homework, he felt just sad! Still, he did not study.
In the middle of the first semester of school, the entire seventh grade was tested for basic skills. John hurried through his test, and continued to dream of other things. His heart was not in school. At home, no one checked on John to see if he was safe. No one knew whether he was even at home because no one cared. However, John never missed a day of school.
One day, Miss Smith’s impatient voice broke into his daydreams.
“John!” Shocked, he turned to look at her.
“Pay attention!”
John looked at his teacher, as she began to go over the test results for the seventh grade.
“You all did pretty well,” she told the class, “except for one boy. It breaks my heart to tell you
this, but...”she hesitated, and started staring at John.
“...The smartest boy in the seventh grade is failing my class!”
She just stared at John and John dropped his eyes. However, John still wouldn’t do his homework. Even as the punishments became severe, he remained stubborn.
“Just try it! ONE WEEK!” He was unmoved.
“Give yourself a chance. Don’t give up!” Nothing changed him.
“John! Please! I care about you!”
Wow! Suddenly, John got it! Someone cared about him? Unbelievable! John went home from school, thoughtful. Walking into the house, he found his parents drunk as expected. He quickly packed his camping gear (露营装备), a loaf of bread, a bottle of water, and for the first time, his schoolbooks. Determined, he headed for the woods.

Once there was a little girl named Emily. Although her singing was very pleasant to hear, lacking courage, she never dared to sing in front of strangers.
One summer, the neighborhood where she lived would hold a singing competition. Her best friend, Lucy, came to invite her to participate in the competition, but Emily said, “I’m afraid to take part in it.” Her mother said. “It’s okay, just do it bravely.” Emily followed her mama’s advice and decided to give it a try. The day came. Emily and Lucy went to the competition site. But she was too timid (胆小的) to walk onto the stage. She had been waiting until others finished singing. She shakily forced herself to stand on the stage. She started to sing, but her voice was so low. What’s worse, she was so nervous that she forgot the lyrics (歌词) after singing a few words. She was laughed at by others. Embarrassed and shy, she ran away from the stage.
Some naughty boys ran after her and said “Emily, coward (胆小鬼) Emily, coward!” Emily didn’t argue with them. What she wanted was to go back home as quickly as she could. Finally, she rushed into the house, hugged her mom and cried sadly. “Well, my poor girl. Don’t cry.” Tell me what happened to you, asked her mom. Emily looked up at her mother and told her what she had experienced.
Listening to her, her mom cupped her face in her hands and said. “It doesn’t matter, my girl. As long as you practice singing more in front of strangers, you will become braver little by little. So, my girl, don’t be beaten by a failure. You can go out to practice singing every day. No matter who is listening to you, go on singing and never stop. I believe there will be a harvest for you.”

A friend of mine whose name was John Smith had a bad memory, which made him famous. He was so forgetful that he sometimes forgot what he was talking about in the middle of a sentence. His wife had to constantly remind him about his meetings, his classes — even his meals! Once he forgot he had eaten breakfast twice, at home and at school. His wife liked to remind her neighbours, “If John didn’t have his head tied on, he would forget that too!” Since Smith was a professor at a well-known university, his forgetfulness was often an embarrassment to him. It wasn’t that he was not clever, as some critical people tended to say, but just very absent-minded.
One hot summer day, Professor Smith decided to take his children to a seaside town about a three-hour train ride away. To make the trip more interesting for his young children, he kept the name of the town a secret. However, by the time they arrived at the station, Smith forgot the name of the town he was planning to visit. Luckily, a friend of his happened to be in the station. He offered to take care of the children while Smith hurried back home to find out where he was going.
The professor’s wife was surprised to see him again so soon.
“Oh, my dear, I forget the name of the town.”
“What? You forget the name? Maybe one day you will forget my name! Now I’ll write the name of that town on a piece of paper, and you put it in your pocket and please, please don’t forget where you put it.”
Satisfied that she had solved the problem, she sent her husband off again. Ten minutes later she was astonished to see him outside the house for the third time.

I love digging in the back garden. Sometimes, I’d dig for pottery and stuff, but I’ve always wanted to find a fossil (化石). I like finding out about the past. At school, my favourite subject is history. I’ve been watching Andy’s Prehistoric Adventures since I was three. I knew I had a good chance of finding a fossil, because my house was built on a muddy, limestone substrate (石灰岩基质), in Walsall, which means millions of years ago, my garden wasn’t my garden at all—it was a coral reef (珊瑚礁).
On 22 March, it was a sunny day. I came back from school. I asked Dad if I could dig in my favourite spot by the yellow bush near our house, where we had planted potatoes and onions, but he told me not to, because he’d just moved a tree there and it was establishing roots. I went to the back garden instead, taking Dad’s old brown wooden garden tools. I dug a big hole, about a foot deep, which didn’t take very long, where I found a ball of mud with something pointy sticking out the top. I ran into the kitchen screaming. I was so excited. I knew it was a fossil.
At first, I thought it might be a deer’s tooth or a goat’s claw. When Dad washed the mud off, we saw that it had lots of bumpy, wavy lines; we both thought it looked like one of the sea anemones, from the fish tank in his office, but with a horn(触角). Dad sent a video to the Fossil Finds UK Facebook group. A man calling himself an archaeologist (考古学家) replied saying it had the markings of a horn coral from the Palaeozoic era, which is the very beginnings of life on Earth. I had found one of the oldest fossils in England.
We looked in my books and online for more information. We typed our postcode into a British Geology Survey search where you can find out what you’re standing on—ours is the oldest substrate in the area, with lots of clay and limestone, but it’s unusual to find anything so close to
the surface. Experts told us that my horn coral lived between 415 million and 480 million years ago. There weren’t even proper fish or sharks then.

“Dad, are you sure there will be a bar of chocolate?” I asked, lining up with Dad and Uncle John near the back of many runners in Los Angeles. My first marathon. It was pouring rain, my legs were cold, and I was wishing I hadn’t been too nervous to eat a bigger breakfast.
“There were tables of chocolate bars every mile at my last marathon,” Dad said.
Suddenly everyone around us started moving. Way up ahead I saw smoke from the cannon (手枪). Our marathon started.
“You go on ahead,” Dad said, panting. “I’ll see you at the end.”
Uncle John and I zigzagged through the runners. Soon Dad was way behind. We reached mile 5, but I still hadn’t seen a chocolate bar anywhere. Instead, the streets were lined with fast-food places. I smelled the food as I ran — doughnuts, hamburgers, fries.
By mile 8, I was starving. How I wished I’d eaten six pieces of toast, eggs, bacon, ... It was raining so hard. My hands stung from the cold.
On the balconies people yelled and waved to us. At mile 10, I took a power gel (能量胶) out of my pocket and tried to open it, but my hands were so cold as if they had been frozen into fists. When I rounded the corner, I saw my aunt and my little brother cheering for us. I wanted to stop and talk, but I couldn’t get out of the flow of runners. The road ahead was yellow. Thousands of banana skins everywhere. Food at last! I grabbed a banana and wolfed it down.
Mile 15. I looked down at my feet and watched them run across the stars. There were tables full of power gels. I took one and tore it open. My hands had come unfrozen. I squeezed the packet and filled my mouth with sweet stuff. Chocolate would taste better.

My dad got a new job. We had to pack up and move away from everything we were familiar with. There were so many changes. We came from the north, and now we were almost as far south as possible. We landed in South Florida, and we were total strangers. We moved over during the
summer vacation, so I didn’t have to deal with school right away. Summer passed by while we unpacked, arranged furniture, found stores we liked, and adapted to the Sunshine State.
School was coming, and I was afraid of it. I was not an adventurous person. Being shy and quiet, I read a lot and did not make friends easily. My head was filled with fears and worries. Would I make friends? Would If it in? Would I survive in this strange new world? Anyway, there I was, attending a new school full of people I didn’t know.
I had a difficult time adapting to the new school. However, I still loved learning and reading.
I even loved homework, and I was good at doing my homework. Loving books and reading helped me to get good grades. Teachers loved that about me. Other kids, though, did not. Although I always answered questions in class, I seldom talked with my classmates. I was unpopular. I felt like a total failure and nobody would like me.
The none day, at all boy walked over to me after an English class. He introduced himself and told me he was in the school basketball team. I knew him—he was the star player! “Hey,” he said. “You do really well in English class. And you know, my teammates and I spend much time competing and practicing. The subjects, especially English, really bother us. Do you think you could help us?” “Yes. Oh, definitely yes. I could, and I would,” I replied with surprise. We made the deal with an exchange of smiles.

Michael saw the trouble coming from all the way at the end of the school hallway. There standing by the stairs was Tom, the school bully, who enjoyed taunting (嘲讽) anyone he felt like at any moment. He was tall and strong, so few of the students who were picked on were willing to stand up to him and defend themselves. Michael was one of them.
When they met in the middle of the hallway, Tom walked directly toward Michael, stopped abruptly and snapped at Michael, “Hey, let me see those books!” A group of students watched as Michael held out the books he was carrying, trying not to tremble to show how nervous he was. Tom grabbed a math book, looked inside for a second, and then pushed the book at Michael, who dropped all the books he held. “Hey, those books are school belongings,” Tom barked, “so don’t let them fall to the floor!” Then he walked away, laughing loudly.
Michael’s cheeks turned red. Suddenly a hand appeared beside Michael and picked up a book as it slid away. Michael turned around and saw that it was Ramon, the school’s star baseball player. He couldn’t believe that Ramon was stopping to help him, as they had hardly spoken to each other.
“Thanks,” Michael sighed with relief. “It’s so confusing. I don’t know what his problem is,” Ramon said. “You need to find a way to end this conflict with Tom.” Ramon continued, “My grandmother used to tell me whenever I had a problem with someone, ‘You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.’”
Looking puzzled, Michael asked what it meant. “It means that being kind to your enemies may be more effective than being angry at them,” Ramon explained.
That night, Michael thought about the advice that Ramon had given him. It sounded like a good plan, but deep down Michael wasn’t very confident that it would actually work with Tom.

I was a shy 13-year-old boy that year, afraid to speak before people and poor at communicating with others. My parents were worried so they introduced a part-time job in a restaurant tome during the summer vacation, hoping it would make a difference to me. Although I hated it and didn’t believe it would bring any change to me, I had to accept it. The part-time job fell on Monday of each week.
On the first Monday, I simply dared not look at people in the restaurant. And when I was speaking with them, my face turned red and my voice was low. On my way back home, I felt so bad. But when I reached home, my bad feelings disappeared. I found my parents had brought home a pet cat, which I had expected to get for a long period of time. The cat was so lovely.
However, one Thursday, he secretly ran out and disappeared. We looked for him everywhere the whole day but found nothing. We lived in the city, close to a high-traffic road, and this cat didn’t have “street smarts”. I guessed he would probably die and wouldn’t be home again. And after three days of looking for the cat with no sign of him, I quite believed he wouldn’t be home again. My parents told me “A miracle (奇迹) may happen as long as you don’t give up.”However, I quite doubted it.
On the morning of the following Monday, I left for work 45 minutes earlier and started walking to the bus stop a block away. While waiting for the bus there, I thought about the work and felt upset. It wouldn’t be helpful to me and it was tiring! How much I wanted to quit the job! And thinking of the cat, I felt even worse.
Since it was still early, I suddenly wanted to spare some time to look for the cat again though I had little hope. I told myself, “If I still fail to find him this time, I won’t look for him again.” Then, I decided to walk to the next bus stop to look for him around. Minutes later, suddenly, a dirty and weak cat sitting by a tree caught my eye.

Steve grabbed his bat and glove. “See you later, Mom. I’m going to Paul’s.” With these words, he raced out the door and slammed (砰地关上) it behind him. Summer vacation just began. The boys planned to play baseball every day, so they could make the freshman team.
Seeing Paul waiting outside, Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder and asked, “What are you doing? Where’s your stuff?” Paul shook his head, “I have to clean Mr. Thimpson’s garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can’t do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help the Thimpson’s. They’re kind of old.” “Okay,” said Steve. “I’ll help you. We’ll get done quicker working together.”
The boys went down the block to the Thimpson’s and got started. They put boxes that were scattered (散落) around the garage floor on shelves before they swept. As Paul lifted a big box onto a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope. He picked up the envelope and found it wasn’t sealed. He opened it, inside which were lots of one hundred dollar bills. Gasping in astonishment, Paul pulled out a handful of bills and showed them to Steve.
“Where did you get that?” asked Steve. Paul pointed to the shelf, explaining, “It just fell down when the box fell. There’s got to be a couple of thousand dollars here.” He looked past Steve to the opening garage door. “Nobody is around. If I take some, I bet no one will ever know,” added Paul, uncontrollably picturing the bat and glove in McGroger’s Sports Store that he had longed for.
Steve frowned and shook his head. “Are you crazy? That’s stealing.” “Well, I do a lot of chores for them and don’t get paid. It’s not really stealing; it’s kind of payment for my hard work.” Paul defended himself. “Forget about it. You’re better than that.” Steve grabbed the money from Paul’s hand, stuffed it back in the envelope and put the envelope back on the shelf. “Come on! Let’s get done and go to the park,” Steve urged.
