Harvard University named historian Drew Gilpin Faust as its first female president on Sunday, ending a lengthy and secretive search to find a successor〔接任者〕to Lawrence Summers .
The seven-member Harvard Corporation elected Faust, a noted scholar on History of the American South and dean of Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study, as the university’s 28th president.
“This is a great day, and a hist oric day for Harvard,〞James R. Houghton, chairman of the presidential search committee, said in a statement. “Drew Faust is an inspiring and accomplished leader, a superb scholar, a dedicated〔献身的) teacher, and a wonderful human being.〞Her selection is no teworthy given the heated debates over Summers’ comments that genetic differences between the sexes might help explain the lack of women in top science jobs.
Faust has been dean of Radcliffe since 2021, two years after the former women’s college was combined into the university as a research center with a mission to study gender issues(性别问题).
Some professors have quietly groused that the 371-year-old university is appointing a fifth president who is not a scientist. No scientist has had the top job since James Bryant Conant retired in 1953; its last four have come from the fields of classics, law, literature and economics.
Faust is the first Harvard president who did not receive a degree from the university since
Charles Chauncy, a graduate of Cambridge University, who died in office in 1762. She attended the University of Pennsylvania.
“Teaching staff turned to her constantly,〞said Sheldon Hackney, a former president of the University of Pennsylvania and historian who worked closely with Faust. “She’s ver y clear. She has a sense of humor, but she’s very strong-minded. You come to trust in her because she’s so solid.〞

When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where
standards-based learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers. For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she’s been named national teacher of the year.
Principal Waynes Kettler said he’s worked with ma ny outstanding teachers in his 22 years as an educator, but Peterson is “just that one step above anybody I’ve ever w orked with before.〞Kettler and others at Monte Cristo Elementary School talk about the ways she has introduced the learning from other classrooms into her music program and her creativity in working around things such as the lack of money for new music.
When students were reading S.E. Hinton’s novel The Outsiders in their regular classroom, Peterson helped them write a 30-minute play with scenes from the book. Then they chose three Broadway tunes that focused on race, equality and social justice, the themes of the book. Peterson composed two other songs herself after classroom discussions about the play and the book. The honor means a lot to residents of Granite Foils. It’s inspiring to know that people from small towns even win national honors.
As national teacher of the year, Peterson will spend the more years outside the classroom, as a national and international spokeswoman for educati on. If you look for a book as a present for a child, you will be spoiled for choice even in a year there is no new Harry Patten. J.K R owling’s wizard is not alone .The past decade has been a harvest for good children’s books ,which has set off a large quantity of films and an increased

Either way, Chancellor Cordon Brown plans to change things for the bottom of the class .In his pre-budget report, he announced the national project of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.
Reading Recovery is aimed at six year olds, who receive four months of individual daily half-hour classes with a specially trained teacher. An evaluation this year reported that children on the school made 20 months’ progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made just five months’ progress ,and so ended the year even further below t he level expected for their age.
International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school, they read well ,but read text often for fun than those elsewhere .Reading for fun matters because children who are keen on reading can report lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent indicator of future educational success . According to the OECD, being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.

[阅读材料]
Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. It was the couple I had spoken to at the gas station. They said they would take me to my friend's. We chatted on the way into the city, and when I got out of the car, the husband gave me his business card.
I wrote him and his wife a thank-you note for helping me. Soon afterward, I received a Christmas present from them. Their note that came with it said that helping me had made their holidays meaningful.
Years later, I drove to a meeting in a nearby town in the morning. In late afternoon I returned to my car and found that I'd left the lights on all day, and the battery(电池)was dead.
Then I noticed that the Friendly Ford dealership - a shop selling cars - was right next door. I walked over and found two salesmen in the showroom.
"Just how friendly is Friendly Ford?" I asked and explained my trouble. They quickly drove a pickup truck to my car and started it. They would accept no payment, so when I got home, I wrote them a note to say thanks. I received a letter back from one of the salesmen. No one had ever taken the time to write him and say thank you, and it meant a lot, he said.
"Thank you" - two powerful words. They're easy to say and mean so much.

Last week, I made a survey among 1200 students in my school about the purpose of surfing the internet .The survey shows that 60% of the boys like playing games on the internet while only 21% of the girls like it. 任务型写作〔满分是25分〕
One Possible Version:
In this passage, the writer mainly tells us two of his experiences of being helped by strangers. After he wrote them thank-you notes, he realized that saying “thank y ou〞to others meant so much.
I have a similar experience. Once when I was about to go home after school, it was raining so heavily that I had to wait for the rain to stop. But after half an hour it was still raining. Seeing this, the guard at the gate offered to lend me his umbrella. I accepted at once. Thanks to his help, I got home on time without getting wet. The next morning, when I returned the umbrella to the guard, I said thank you to him and left him a note expressing my gratitude sincerely. To my surprise, he
said no one had ever written him to say thank you, and it meant a lot to him.
So in my opinion, saying thank you to others is not only easy but also meaningful to the person who says it and the receiver!
