When Andrea Peterson landed her first teaching job, she faced the daunting task of creating a music program with almost no money for equipment or supplies in a climate where
standards-based learning was the focus and music just provided a break for students and teachers. For her drive and creativity in overcoming those challenges, she’s been named national teacher of the year.

Many years ago, when I was fresh out of school and working in Denver, I was driving to my parents' home in Missouri for Christmas. I stopped at a gas station about 50 miles from Oklahoma City, where I was planning to stop and visit a friend. While I was standing in line at the cash register(收款台), I said hello to an older couple who were also paying for gas.
I took off, but had gone only a few miles when black smoke poured from the back of my car. I stopped and wondered what I should do. A car pulled up behind me. I have a similar experience. Once when I was about to go home after school, it was raining so heavily that I had to wait for the rain to stop. But after half an hour it was still raining. Seeing this, the guard at the gate offered to lend me his umbrella. I accepted at once. Thanks to his help, I got home on time without getting wet.
