The question this week comes from our listener Herve Acard, who asks about the American word “OK”, which means “all right” or “acceptable”. It expresses agreement or approval. The word is used more often than any other word in the world.
Language expert Allen Walker Read said the word began as a short way of writing a different spelling of the words “all correct”. Old stories say some foreign-born people would write “all correct” as o-l-l k-o-r-r-e-c-t and spoke it as “OK”. Some people say it came from the Native
American Indian tribe known as the Choctaws. The Choctaw word “okeh” means the same as the American word “OK”. Experts say early explorers in the Western America spoke the Choctaw language in the nineteenth century. The language spread across the country.
According to some people, “OK” was a way to shorten Greek words that mean everything is fine. It is also said that a railroad worker named Obadiah Kelly invented the word. He is said to have put the first letters of his names — O and K — on each object people gave him to place on the train.
Another explanation is that “OK” was invented by a political organization that supported Martin Van Buren for president in the 1800s. They called their organization the OK Club. The letters O and K were taken from the name of the town where Martin V an Buren was born —Old Kinderhook, New York.
Not everyone agrees with these explanations, but experts do agree that the word is purely American and has spread to almost every country on Earth. Yet in the United States, it is used mostly in speech. Serious writers prefer using words, such as “agree”, “approve” or “confirm” instead.

A. People disagree about the origin of “OK”.
B. “OK” is often used in formal writing in the USA.
C. The word “OK” is widely used all over the world.

55% of deaths caused by road accidents occur in the first few minutes after a crash. Up to 85% of these deaths could be prevented if first aid were given. The first person on the scene of a road accident will almost certainly be another road user. So as a driver your knowledge of first aid could make a real difference to someone in the event of a road accident.
Assess conditions
·Remain calm. Judge the scene and seriousness of the collision.
·Determine what has happened, how many people and vehicles are involved and the exact location.
·Determine how many casualties(伤亡人数) there are, what is the severity of the injuries, whether anyone is trapped, and whether there is a danger of fire.
Make safe
·Make sure you stay safe and keep off the road. If you need to stop or warn approaching cars, signal to them from the pavement. Wear reflective clothing, use warning triangles, flashing lights and warning lights. Don’t smoke.
·If you are in a car and you come across an accident, first park safely and turn off the engine before you get out to help. Use a triangle warning danger if necessary.
·Consider the safety of others. Don’t move the vehicles, look out for dangers —leaking fuel, chemicals, broken glass or dropping loads — guide uninjured passengers to a place of safety.
Call for help
Dial 999 (or 112) for the emergency services. If there is no phone nearby, send two people in opposite directions to seek help.
Do this as soon as you can or get someone else to do it while you deal with an injured person. You will need to tell the emergency services:
·where you are
·what has happened (describe the accident)
·how many people are injured
·whether they are breathing or bleeding.
The operator will talk you through what to do while you wait for an ambulance to arrive.
Apply emergency first aid
·Remain calm. Reassure the victims.
·Do not allow smoking or offer food or drink to casualties as this could hamper urgent medical treatment.
68.The passage mainly tells us ______.
A. how to reduce road accident deaths
B. how to perform first aid in a road accident
C. how to treat the injured people on the scene
D. how to protect us from being injured in an accident
69.When a driver is applying first aid, which of the following is proper?
A. Stand in the middle of the road to stop or warn approaching cars.
B. Leave the engine working when he gets out of his car to help.
C. Call 999 for an ambulance to come and leave the scene immediately.
D. Make sure the scene is safe enough and stay away from dangerous gas leaking.
70.What does the underline d word “hamper” mean in the last paragraph?

When TV news programs report wars or disasters, the editors rarely use the most horrifying pictures of dead or wounded victims because they don’t want to upset their viewers. Even so, viewers are usually warned in advance that they may find some of these scenes disturbing, so they
can look away if they choose. But the men and women whose job is to record those scenes-the TV cameramen-have no such choice. It is their duty to witness the horrors of the world and record them, no matter how terrible and unpleasant they may be. Consequently, it is one of the most dangerous, exposed and emotionally taxing jobs the world has to offer.
Today, the demand for their work is rising. The explosion of satellite broadcasting and 24-hour news in recent years has created an almost insatiable (贪得无厌的) demand for TV information. But major broadcasters and the TV news agencies—such as Reuters and WTN-have never had enough staff to meet the worldwide demand for up-to-date pictures, so increasingly they turn to “freelance” TV cameramen.
These freelance cameramen are independent operators tied to no particular organization. They will work for any company which hires them, be it for just a few hours or for several weeks in a war zone. But if the freelance cameraman is injured in the course of the job, the TV company is not responsible for him. The freelancer must survive on his own.
TV will always need hard, vivid moving pictures which are fresh, but these companies feel uncomfortable with large numbers of employees on their books, explains Nick Growing, once foreign editor for Britain Channel 4 News and now a BBC news presenter.
By hiring freelancers, they can buy in the skills they need only when they need them. It also enables them to contract out the risk, he says.
72.TV news agencies turn to freelance cameramen in order to .
A. save expense and avoid risks
B. get free and useful pictures
C. get first-hand information and pictures
D. satisfy the greed of the freelance cameramen
73.We can infer from the passage that the freelance cameramen .
A. have to take a lot of risks in the course of work
B. are tied to many TV news agencies
C. have better skills than other cameramen
D. need to contract out risks of work for TV companies

B. are not willing to employ many cameramen
C. are very mean to freelancers
C. are responsible for the freelancer if he is injured
75.The author of this passage shows his the freelance cameramen.
A. sympathy to

No fight can end, and no friendship can mo ve on, until everyone says these little words: I’m sorry. Sometimes, though, they can be difficult to say, 76 .
It’s not about winning.
Friendships are not like the Super Bowl, and there should never be a winner and a loser. When you start fighting with a friend, it may feel important that you “win” the fight by proving you’re right and he is wrong, or by making him be the first to apologize.
77
You may have heard the expression “His pride stood in the way.” It is usually used to describe a person who is so determined to be“right”that he lets an opportunity for happiness pass him by forever. 78 Remember: as time goes on, we usually forget who was right and who was wrong in a disagreement, and only remember the sadness of losing a friend.
Take the first step.
Are you sick of fighting? Do you think this fight is just not important enough to ruin your friendship? 79 You don’t have to take full responsibility for starting the fight, or even say that your feelings were wrong. But you should find something you did or said that’s worth apologizing for. Maybe you’re sorry that you let the fight go for so long, of that you overreacted(反应过度的) to something your friend did. If you say you are sorry, it’s like an invitation for your friend to do the same. 80
A.Then try to be the first to apologize.
B.Stop thinking about your pride.
C.It’s about taking some responsibility for the argument.
D.Don’t let this happen to a friendship you care about.
E.Here are some things to keep in mind.
F.Once you’ve both said it, you’ll both feel a million times better.

I have a plenty of plans for the winter vacation. But my friend Wang Lin doesn’t have any. She just stays at home watching TV. “Don’t you look forward reading good books during the vacation?” I ask her this morning. Without taking her eyes on the TV screen, she replied, “No.” I felt very worry when I heard what he said. 作文
My dear friend,
My favorite book is Harry Potter, which is a series of books written by JK Rowling. It is not only about magic and strange creatures, but also about the real world. By reading the book, you can learn that the most important lesson for us is about real life, friendship and how to be brave. Besides, you can also learn about the power of love. It teaches us that if we want to be happy and live a good life, it is not enough to be strong in heart and mind; we must also believe in ourselves and help others. What’s more, we should know who we are if we want to succeed in the world. I think Harry Porter is really a book worth reading.
Yours sincerely,
Li Yue。
