A strange thing happens to nearly everybody at night. They turn off the lights, put up the covers and close their eyes. Six or seven hours later, they wake up again. Strange, isn’t it?
Sleep puzzles science. Scientists and doctors would rather talk about why one can’t fall asleep. They are not so sure what causes sleep.
The best conditions for sleep, they say, are good health and meal neither too big nor too small. No worries and a comfortable place to sleep in are important, too. They advise against two in one bed.
Strange things happen during sleep. For example, you move often. You would feel tired if you didn’t. You also dream. Part of your brain is still awake when you dream. Dreaming happens when the memory and imagination parts of your brain are still awake. Experiments have shown that bad dreams may be caused by a stomachache.

In recent years advances in medical technology have made it possible for people to live longer than in the past. New medicines and machines are being developed every day to extend life. However, some people, including some doctors, are not in favor of these life extending measures, and they argue that people should have the right to die when they want. They say that the quality of life is as important as life itself and that people should not be forced to go on living when conditions of life have become unbearable. They saw that people should be allowed to die with dignity (尊严) and to decide when they want to die. A typical day at work for Cesar Millan might include putting on his running shoes and taking a four-hour jog with 40 dogs—dogs large and small, young and old. Amazingly, most of those dogs belong to him. The rest are at the heart of his work; they are troubled dogs sent to Millan to learn good behavior.
Obviously Millan, star of the TV show Dog Whisperer and author of the best-selling book Cesar’s Way, has a special gift for working with these animals.
Growing up on a farm in Mexico, Millan knew he wanted to work with dogs. His first job, at age 15, was helping a veterinarian(兽医). He was so good at calming scared dogs and handling all kinds of situations, people started calling him “el perrero”, Spanish for “the dog boy”. Since then, he has built a rewarding career around his favorite animal.
“My grandfather taught me at an early age not to work against nature,” he explains. “In nature, dogs are pack animals. They form a group and follow one leader. Millan’s specialty is teaching people to be pack leaders for their dogs
Studying dogs on the farm where he grew up, Millan realised they need lots of exercise to be calm. He explains his approach, “Exercise and discipline first, and then affection!” He says a lot of people get it backwards because they don’t reali se what dogs really need. Therefore, while he trains dogs, he teaches owners to understand that their pets n eed rules. He’s helped big celebrities like Oprah Winfrey and movie star Will Smith and everyday people too.
To find the right career, Millan encourages kids to do what they enjoy. “A lot of people don’t
realise I’ve been working with dogs for more than 20 years—long before my TV show or book . Success followed me because I was following my dream of being the best dog trainer in the world.”

According to a recent survey, _______________.
One possible version:
According to a recent survey, about 25 percent of college students have a part-time job. During summer vacation, this figure will increase to 72 percent. College students are working as tutors, waiters or salesmen etc.
Why do college students want part-time jobs? The main reason is that they hope to be economically independent. If so, they can buy whatever they need in daily life. And meanwhile, they may help cover their increasing college tuition.
I think it is good for college students to do part-time jobs. By doing part-time jobs, they can gain some society experience and broaden their outlook. What is more, part-time jobs can provide them with a valuable opportunity to know the outside world.

Dear John,
I read an advertisement in today’s China Daily, which says the Beijing Ladder Information Company Limited is running a course, so they need some native-speaker English teachers for children and adults. What they prefer is a university degree in education or other related fields. And a foreign expert certification is also required. I think you are well qualified and are the proper person they want.
If you are interested, please directly call or write to the company. Their telephone number is 0080-10-6819433, and their e-mail address is licobj@hotmailaaa.
Good luck!

Dear Peter,
I’m writing to ask whether you are able to do me a favor.
I want to have a pen friend, hopefully a girl in her early twenties, and with interests similar to mine. In my mind, she is someone who is interested in traveling, swimming, and playing table tennis. Besides, it would be better for her to have a pet dog as I have kept one at home for some time. With such a pen friend, I think I can share with her our traveling experiences, taking care of pets, or whatever we have in common. And I believe I will improve my English by doing so and learn more about her country.
I look forward to hearing from you soon.
Best regards,
Li Hua
