第一节(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
(A)
I had managed to sell all my papers and was coming home in the snow. It was that strange hour in New York when the workers were walking towards home in the evening. I recognized my father near Cooper Union, a frozen figure in an old overcoat standing by a banana cart (手推车). He looked so lonely; tears came to my eyes. Then he saw me, and his face lit with
his sad, beautiful smile.
“Arch,” he said, “so you have sold your papers! Come and eat a banana.”
He offered me one, but I refused it. I felt it important that my father sell his bananas, not give them away. He thought I was shy, and joked with me, and made me eat the banana. It smelled of wet snow.
“You haven’t sold many bananas today, Dad,” I said.
“What can I do? No one seems to want them,” Dad said.
It was true. The crowds pushed home; the sky darkened over the New York buildings; the tall street lamps were lit; street cars and bikes went by. Nobody and nothing in the great city stopped for my father’s bananas.
“I ought to yell (叫喊),” said my father sadly. “I ought to make a big noise like other peddlers (小贩), but it makes my throat sore. Anyway, I’m ashamed (羞愧的) of yelling; it makes me feel like a fool.”
I had eaten one of his bananas. A voice deep down told me that I ought to pay for it somehow. I must remain here and help my father.
“I’ll yell for you, Dad,” I volunteered.
“Arch, no,” he said, “go home; you have worked enough today. Just tell momma I’ll be late.”
But I yelled and yelled. My father, standing by, spoke words of praise, and said I was a wonderful yeller. However, nobody else paid attention; nobody listened and came to buy our bananas.
My father tried to stop me at last. He s aid, “That was wonderful yelling, Arch. But it’s just we are unlucky today! Let’s go home.”
I insisted on keeping up my yells. But at last my father persuaded me to leave with him.

I n recent years, especially during the 1960s, there was much discussion about “the brain drain (排干,流失),” which dealt with the problem of students and learned peo ple who left their own countries for other countries that offered better chances for study, research, and employment. For example, according to a report from U. N. , between 1962 and 1966 more than 50 percent of all engineering graduates of Iran and 14 percent of Iranian scientists left their country for work abroad. Over 30 percent of Chilean engineers and 15 percent of Turkish physicians also went to work in other countries. Probably the greatest brain drain occurred among young scientists who had gone abroad to study. Many of them had planned to return to their countries to teach but chose to remain in more industrialized nations where they were able to continue their work and their research in fields in which there were no job possibilities at home. The countries that attracted most of these scientists were the United States, Great Britain, Germany, France, Canada, and Australia.
Recent studies show that the brain drain to the United States may be decreasing. Many foreign scientists are going home again, and in some cases American scientists are leaving the United States for employment in other countries. The main reasons are that good jobs are becoming fewer here, money for national research has been sharply cut, and university fellowships reduced too. However, in the field of medicine the drain to the United States still goes on. Today more than one of every five American doctors is foreign—born, and several thousand foreign doctors immigrate to the United States each year. Over eighty countries have asked the State Department to send students who are skilled in important fields such as medicine back home when their study programs are over.
24.Which of the following is not the reason for “the brain drain”?
A. Better chances of study.
B. Better research condition
C. Good job possibility
D. Good housing
25.The brain drain to the United States may be decreasing mainly because________.
A. many foreign scientists are ordered to return to their motherlands
B. there are fewer and fewer good jobs in the USA
C. they don’t need any foreign scientists now
D. the universities refuse to provide money for the foreign scientist
26.How many American doctors are foreign—born?
A. More than 20 percent
B. About half of them
C. Several thousand
D. About 15 percent
27. Which is the best title for this passage?
A. How to seek a job in the USA
B. Doctors’ immigration to the USA
C. The brain drain
D. A strange case.

Wolves use many different types of communication. One way they communicate is through sound. The howl (嗥叫) is a well-known method wolves use to communicate with each other. While howling, wolves often change their voices a lot. As a result, people are sometimes “fooled” into believing that there are more wolves than there really are. People have often guessed, after listening to howls, that a pack of一群 wolves contained up to 20 individuals, when there were only 3 or 4. Some people have thought that wolves do that on purpose, in order to fool neighboring packs into believing that there are more animals present than there really are. However, many naturalists and wolf biologists do not accept that idea.
Wolves seem to howl for many reasons. They often howl before they go on a hunt, possibly to get the pack together, and they often begin to howl after a successful hunt. That suggests that howling serves to bring a pack together, since wolves often become separated from each other during a hunt. They do not, however, howl while they are hunting. In addition, a wolf may howl alone if it is having trouble locating its pack. Surprisingly, pack members seem to r ecognize each other’s voices, since individual wolves often have their own way of howling. Wolves will also howl in sadness after the death of their mates.
Wolf packs may also howl to communicate with other packs, as two different wolf packs will sometimes answer each other’s howls. Wolves will also often answer the calls of humans who are pretending to howl like wolves. Wolves howl less often during May and June than they do during the rest of the year. This may be because that is the time that packs are most likely to have young pups (幼崽) present. It is possible that wolf packs who have young pups present often keep silent so they do not attract attention to their location, since pups can be easily hurt by predators (捕食性动物) like bears.
