People’s square
A well-known city always owns its famous square. As the times square belongs to new York, and the Tiananmen square to Beijing, the people’s square symbolizes shanghai. It is a large open space in the heart of the city. Surrounded by buildings and facilities ,such as administrations, recreations, transportations, cultural activities and commerce.
In the concession days. This area is a part of a racecourse belongs to British colonists. For about a century it had been a sport arena and the gambler’s paradise. During 1930s and 1940s it was known as the no1 racecourse in far east .in 1950s,it has a massive reconstruction where much of the cement ground was changed into landscape area and a few imposing structures was built Nowadays ,it covers the area of 140,000 square meters, including an landscape area of 80,000 suqare meters. The people’s avenue run across this area and divides it into two
sections.
The north of the square is occupied by three magnificent buildings. Grand theater to the west ,city hall in the middle, shanghai urban planning exhibition hall to the east. The grand theater is the most important venue of the cultural scenes in shanghai and has become the cultural landmark. Shanghai urban planning exhibition hall houses the world’s biggest urban planning model. The city hall facing directly shanghai museum houses the major government offices of shanghai.
At the back of the buildings is people’s park , a good place to take a walk.
To the south of the avenue lies a landscape area with a large square terrace in the middle where a round music fountain offers a magnificent view every half hour. Named “light of the Huangpu river ”,the fountain is patterned on the map of shanghai with a zigzag mark in the middle representing the Huangpu river. Around the fountain is a large
space for social gathering and recreation, decorated with a ring of stool-like stone lamps and four huge vases which look like bronze works. In the middle of the steps are 6 pieces of bas-relief which reflect the history and cultural of shanghai as well as good well of the city. Overlooking the fountain in the south is the shanghai museum which was completed in 1996. ranked by foreign visitors as shanghai’s best attraction, the museum boasts a collection of a million historical artifacts with 130,000 considered very precious. The eastern section of the square features lush trees and flowers terraces with stone chair along the winding paths for visitors to have a rest. In the western part of the square are large patches of lawn where over a thousand pigeons make an attraction. At weekend I often go there for feeding.
The city hall occupying the center of the square, is the symbol of shanghai’s political life. Shanghai museum, grand centre and other
important cultural venues make the square a cultural centre. The square is also a transportation hub. It is a converging point where metro line1 2 8 meet in the underground palace. Two express way pass by its west and south. Tens of the buses link the city centre with other districts.
In the centre of a commercial city, people’s square ranks the most prosperous area in shanghai and is part of the commercial culture that symbolizes the city. For its central position in shanghai’s life, people’s square has become a popular destination for visitors home and abroad.。
