Just when you thought you were taking care of your health by eating enough fruit and vegetables every day, new research has come out revealing that you might be swallowing microplastic particles(颗粒)along with all those vitamins, minerals, and fiber. A groundbreaking study published in the journal Environmental Research has found that fruits and vegetables absorb microplastic particles from the soil and move them through vegetal tissues, where they remain until eaten by hungry diners, thus getting transferred to human bodies.
The researchers, who are from the University of Catania in Italy, as well as Sousse and Monastir universities in Tunisia, analyzed a variety of common fruits and vegetables---carrots, lettuce, broccoli, potatoes, apples, and pears. These were chosen for the fact that they are frequently consumed, usually one per day, which allowed the researchers to better assess the dietary intakes of MPs (microplastic particles) and NPs (nano-plastics). The samples were purchased from different sources in the city of Catania, including a small fruit vendor and a supermarket.
The researchers found that apples, followed by pears, were the most polluted fruit samples, and carrots were the most polluted vegetable. In the study’s discussion section, the authors wrote, “We can assume that the fruits contain more MPs not only because of the very high vascularization(血管化)of the fruit pulp (果肉) but also due to the greater size and complexity of the root system and age of the tree (several years) compared to the vegetables (60-75 days for the carrot).”
This study is important because it’s the first to detect microplastics in fruits and vegetables. They have been found in other sources before, such as sea salt, beer, water(bottled, in particular), shellfish, sugar, soil, and even air, but never inside fresh produce. It’s an alarming discovery that raises yet another red flag about microplastic pollution in the natural environment.
It’s an area that will likely see a lot more attention in coming years, with the study authors calling for further research into the question of microplastic and whether it harms the health of both plants and humans.
24. What is the study about?
A. The main cause of soil pollution.
B. The great changes in people’s diets.
C. The benefits of eating fruits and vegetables.
D. The microplastic pollution in fruits and vegetables.
25. Why did researchers choose frequently eaten fruits and vegetables?
A. To lower the cost of the study.
B. To gain widespread acceptance.
C. To improve the accuracy of the study.
D. To reduce the time for preparing the samples.
26. What makes the study quite special?
A. It showed the influences of MPs on plants.
B. It proved the source of microplastic pollution.
C. It presented the danger of MPs to human’s body.
D. It discovered MPs in fresh produce for the first time.
27. What do the study authors think of the research on microplastic?
A. It needs to be further studied.
B. It wasted them quite a lot of time.
C. It has raised people’s awareness of health.
D. It has attracted people’s attention to diets.

Most of the new diseases we humans have faced in the past several decades have come from animals. The more we come into contact with wild animals, the more we risk a so-called disease “spillover” from animals to humans.
“As people move and wildlife move in response to a changing environment, humans and wildlife and animals will come in contact more regularly,” said Jeanne Fair from the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Fair argues that by shifting animal habitats, climate change will also make the opportunities for disease spillover more frequent. “Everything is sort of shifting and will shift into the future as the environment changes through climate change,” Fair said.
Scientists, including climatologists and epidemiologists(流行病学家) on Fair’s team at Los Alamos, are beginning to model how changes to the climate will impact the spread of infectious diseases. It’s early days for this kind of research, but previous studies suggest that extreme weather has already played a role in at least one outbreak. Scientists say drought and deforestation have combined to force bats out of rainforests and into orchards (果园)in Malaysia to find food. Those bats, a common disease reservoir, then passed the Nipah virus through pigs to humans for the first time in the late 1990s.
“ We’re going by the past data to really predict what’s going to happen in the future,” Fair said, “And so, anytime you increase that wildlife-human interface (界面), that’s sort of an emerging disease hot spot. And so, that’s just increasing as we go forward.”
Jeffrey Shaman, head of the climate and health program at Columbia University’s public health school, argues we don’t yet know whether climate change will cause a net increase in infectious disease rates globally. For example, mosquitoes carry disease that affects millions of people across the world every year. As their habitats expand in some parts of the world, they might contract diseases elsewhere. Shaman says what we know for certain about climate change is that it will make it harder to predict where disease outbreaks will pop up.
28.How does climate change affect the spread of disease according to Fair?
A. By breaking animals’ habits.
B. By changing animals’ living environment.
C. By promoting animals’ breeding.
D. By increasing animals’ varieties.
29. What is the example of bats for in Paragraph 3?
A. Showing the effects of climate change on disease.
B. Proving the harm of bats to human beings.
C. Explaining the influence of Nipah virus.
D. Presenting scientists’ early study about the cause of disease.
30. What can we infer from Fair’s words in Paragraph 4?
A. Humans should give up studying animals.
B. Past data can solve the problems in the future.
C. Disease hot spots will disappear if animals die out.
D. Frequent contact with animals can cause disease outbreaks.
31. What could be the best title for the text?
A. Early Studies about Extreme Weather
B. Animals’ Interaction with Humans
C. Climate Change and Disease Spillover
D. Scientists’ Prediction for Disease Outbreaks

Experts agree that parents who give up control over their children’s lives would raise them to be more independent adults. While the vast majority of parents are not in the position to bribe their children into elite(精英) schools, this extreme case illustrates the temptation many feel to take control of their kids’ lives. But an extreme hands-on approach can have devastating (毁灭性的) consequences when it comes to a child’s mental health.
“These parents thought their kids were incapable of managing their lives by themselves. And I don’t think there’s any worse message you can give somebody than ‘I don’t have any confidence in your ability to handle your own life,’” the clinical neuropsychologist Willam Stixrud told HuffPost. Stixrud is the author of The Self-driven Child: The Science and Sense of Giving Your Kids More Control Over Their Lives, along with Ned Johnson.
In their research, Stixrud and Johnson have identified the importance for young people to feel a sense of control over their own lives. “We have this epidemic(流行病) of stress-related problems like anxiety and depression, and so many of those are related to the fact that kids feel so little control over their lives,” said Stixrud. “They feel like, ‘Here’s a script to get into college, and that’s what your life is going to be.’ It’s incredibly stressful and discouraging for many kids.” In order to develop healthy self-motivation, young people need to feel a sense of agency and autonomy, which parents and educators have the power to promote.
“We suggest parents think of themselves as consultants, rather than a kid’s manager or boss, or the homework police. It’s a very different kind of thinking about your role”, said Stixrud, “As a consultant, your role is not to force anything or say ‘You need to be like this’. Instead, help your kid understand what he or she wants to be.” He advises parents to encourage their kids to make their own decisions long before the college years. It’s important to constantly ask, “Whose life is this?” and realize the answer is “My child’s life, not mine.”
32. What does the writer think of the extreme hands-on approach in parenting?
A. It’s good for parents to control children better.
B. It can raise children to be independent ones.
C. It’s harmful to children’s mental health.
D. It can help children to be admitted into better schools.
33. What does the underlined word “bribe” in Paragraph 1 mean?
A. persuade
B. translate
C. throw
D. shock
34. In the last paragraph, the author intends to_________.
A. summarize the previous paragraphs
B. add some background information
C. provide some advice for parents
D. introduce a new topic for discussion
35. Which could be the best title for the text?
A. How to Be Your Children’s Friend
B. Be Your Children’s Consultant Instead of Manager
C. Accompany Your Children Growing Up
D. How to Help Your Children Adjust to College Life

Marine Layer is an American clothing company that has recently earned an impressive qualification. It is the first in the world to take old T-shirts and transform them into brand new ones, using 100% recycled materials. 36 The collection was launched on April 28 to much fanfare in the eco-fashion world.
Re-spun shirts are made from old T-shirts that supporters have mailed to the company or dropped off in store. 37 Then they are cleaned using waterless technology, broken down, and woven into a colored cotton fiber. It is mixed with 50% recycled fiber to create the final yarn(纱).
38 Interestingly, Recover has been recycling fabrics since the 1940s, when people were looking for a solution to clothing shortages during World War II. The yarn is sent to Los Angeles for milling and sewing, from where the finished shirts are distributed to Marine Layer’s 41 stores and online shops.
39 Each shirt varies slightly in color. No water, chemicals, or dyes are used in production. Best of all, Marine Layer has no intention of stopping with its first Re-Spun collection. Customers are urged to keep sending in their old shirts using a prepaid mailer, and will get $5 credit for each one, up to a total of $25.
It’s exciting to see the great ways in which fashion companies are trying to reduce their environmental impact. This fabric recycling technology promises to revolutionize the industry and make good use of the 80 pounds of clothing that the average American throws away each year. 40
A. The technology deserves a lot.
B. The result is its Re-spun collection.
C. Many people are interested in the project.
D. These old shirts are sorted into four color groups.
E. Now using old clothes to make new is truly fashionable.
