Direction: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write a short essay on the topic Celebrities as the Products’ Spokesmen. You should write at least 150 words following the outline given below in Chinese:
Celebrities as the Products’ Spokesmen
In the contemporary society, it is very common for celebrities, or the so-called superstars, to be spokesmen or representatives for a wide variety of products. Celebrities’ advertisements can be easily found on the Internet, televisions, newspapers, magazines and even on the walls of some buildings.
There are, however, some problems for celebrities and the consumers. To begin with, before representing, a star may know nothing about the product. Thus, consumers may be misled. Even worse, for the sake of money, some stars advertise for items with low quality, even for fake commodities. In the case of Sanlu, the public image of stars involved was spoiled. Last but not least, the high income of advertising does not deserve their labor, which widens the gap between the poor and the rich.
From my point of view, it is high time that measures were taken to eliminate the demerits. Firstly, laws should be worked out to regulate celebrities’ advertising. Secondly, stars should be required to tell the truth to the public. Only by doing so can stars be trusted by their fans and can consumers benefit. (183 words)

题目:Certificate Craze on Campus
Certificate Craze on Campus
In recent years, getting a certificate has become a new craze among college students. Almost every student is working hard on campus, preparing for a certificate of some kind. Why does this craze appear?
There are mainly two reasons behind this phenomenon. First, it is the employment pressure that forces college students to get more certificates. With the admission expansion of colleges, a lot more graduates have to face the fierce competition in the job market. How can one make himself more competitive? More certificates at hand, maybe. Second, diploma and certificates are still important standards by which many employers measure a person’s ability. In order to increase the qualifications for a job, the students compel themselves to run from one exam to another.
From my point of view, we should be more rational when it comes to certificates, since certificates do not necessarily prove one’s ability. Being crazy in getting certifications blindly is nothing but wasting time. To conclude, we should focus on improving our ability but not getting a certificate of no practical value. (176 words)
Why does this craze appear?

Salary or Interest?
Salary or Interest
Upon graduation, college students often confront the problem of the career choice. Students’ opinions differ greatly on this issue. Some hold that priority should be given to their interest in jobs, but others take the attitude that salary is the most critical factor influencing their career choices. It is truly a tough choice.
As for me,I prefer the latter view. A well paid job exerts a tremendous fascination on a great number of people, with no exception to me. Instead of interest, salary counts most when I choose my future career. In my view, our career choices largely depend on how and where we have been brought up. I come from a poor urban family and my parents were both laid off workers. In order to finance my tuition, they have been working hard over the past four years. As the only son in my family,I have to shoulder the burden of supporting my family. In short, salary is the first and only consideration in my choice of career. (179 words)
(1)priority should be given to something(应优先考虑……),牢记此句式。

High Salaries or Career Development?
High Salaries or Career Development?
Whiling looking for jobs, people have different views about what kind of job they should choose. Some of them focus their attention on the jobs that promise high salaries. Others show a preference for those jobs that offer great career development.
People holding the first view usually think that more money will result in more happiness. With a lot of money in hand, they will be able to enjoy a rich life. Otherwise, they will suffer from depression due to lack of enough money. However, the holders of the second view argue that one should develop his skills as roundly as possible. It is career development that counts most. Without development, you will be outrun by others and fall behind the times sooner or later.
In my view, career development is the right choice because career may give us long term satisfaction while high salary would give us short term happiness. Besides, generally speaking, a good career development will bring high salaries sooner or later. So I will give my vote to the career development first and then high salaries. (180 words)

How Will Our Life Go on without Internet?
If asked whether the Internet is the greatest discovery of the 20th century, my answer would be yes. The Internet has drawn the world closer together, realized countless incredible
dreams, and provided modern people with a great many conveniences and a brilliant life.
Today, many people simply feel they cannot live without the Internet. Governments publish their latest policies and decisions online for worldwide recognition. Political campaigns are often done online to gain wider public support. Companies and enterprises resort to the Internet for more business opportunities and potential customers home and abroad. Common folks like us also rely on the cyber world in various ways, for communication, entertainment, banking and shopping.
The power of the Internet is all pervasive, yet its many negative effects are already visible. For example, Internet addicts tend to withdraw to their own fantasy world rather than communicate with a real person. Children are exposed to online pornography and violence. Internet frauds are an everyday occurrence. In view of all this, you are advised to use the Internet with wisdom. Keep it at a safe distance and never lose yourself.

Credit Cards.
Credit Cards
Personal credit cards are becoming more common in China. Banks and other financial institutions are encouraging their customers to change the way they buy things. Credit cards, otherwise known as “plastic money”, are being offered on very good terms to encourage the change. Consumers will be able to “buy now, pay later”, and many see this as an advantage.
But people need to be careful. There are dangers associated with credit cards. Some people find it very easy to exceed their budget. They are tempted to purchase goods that they do not really need, and can become quickly overburdened by debt. The credit cards often charge a high rate of interest, which exacerbates the problems for these people.
However, credit cards can improve the quality of people’s lives if it is used wisely. They can give people access to money to meet sudden unplanned expenses. Properly handled, they can let people control their expenditure and the monthly statements provide a record of where their money has gone. Therefore, credit cards should be used carefully instead of carelessly. (177 words)

Credit Cards on Campus.
In recent years, credit cards have gained more popularity among college students. With banks’ more focus on college market, an incr easing number of college students have applied for a credit card and begun to consume by it.
The following three factors can account for the popularity of credit cards in college. Firstly, a credit card provides overdrawing service, which is a big attraction for those students who have no much money for their domination. Secondly, a credit card can help release financial burdens on those poor students, and hence reduce the risk of their dropping school for lacking money. Besides, many banks make some preferential policies on credit cards, like sending a gift, lowering year cost. Drawn by these policies, many students apply for credit cards.
As far as I am concerned, it is not a bad thing for college students to own credit cards. However, there is misuse of credit cards among them. Many students use credit cards to buy
luxurious things, and even some of them owe a big debt. Therefore, schools and banks have responsibility to let college students learn how to use credit cards properly. Only in this way can students enjoy the advantages of credit cards. (201 words)

Some 20-somethings, supposed to dedicate themselves to studies, are in hot pursuit of fashion. The craze to vie with each other is prevalent in colleges and universities. Undoubtedly, they have every reason to reverse the trend.
Students should concentrate themselves exclusively on studies, which should be on the top of their agenda. Holding the right concept of value makes sense. To earn an impressive academic performance, we college students must pour determined efforts into study and pay no attention to vogue.
Keeping up with the Jones results in the unavoidable distraction from studies. And college students are vulnerable to business promotional campaign. They are heavily targeted by ads. We should compete with our peers for better scholarly achievement instead of more expensive designer clothes.

Extravagant Spending on College Campus
According to a survey, in recent years the monthly expenditure of a college student has been on the sharp rise. Many college students spend money like water and have no concept of thrift(节俭)in their mind. They take it for granted that they spend money from their parents before they enter into the society. This extravagant spending is mainly caused by the following factors.
First of all, nowadays most of students are the only children of their families. They are the apple in their family's eyes and naturally get more care and pocket money. Secondly, with the improvement of living standard, parents can afford higher expenditure of their children. Thirdly, some students like to pursue fashion and trends, which tends to need more money. Finally, campus love is also a possible factor causing extravagant spending.
From my point of view, a college student, as a pure consumer, should learn to be thrifty. We should limit our expenditure on daily necessities, and should not buy whatever we want regardless of their prices. The habit of thrift can help us form right values and is favorable to our future development. (190 words)

题目:Is Thrift Still a Good Virtue?
Is Thrift Still a Good Virtue?
With the improvement of the living standards, many people are no longer interested in the simple life style and some of them even feel ashamed to be thrifty. What they pursue is the latest fashion. In their eyes, thrift is already out of style.
However, still other people insist that thrift is a good virtue. They say that the unprecedented power of production doesn’t mean that we are entitled to a life of extravagance, because our natural resources are limited and some of them even are on the decline. Moreover, they hold that waste may lead to degradation of social atmosphere and
environmental pollution as well.
As to me, I pre fer the latter opinion. I believe “Waste not, want not.” The truth of this saying is not to give up comfort but to enhance efficiency. In fact, economic growth depends enormously on saving. Besides, there are still millions of Chinese who lives under poverty line. (155 words)
◇第一段语言点提示:feel ashamed to do 做某事觉着羞耻;be ashamed of为某事感到羞耻。
◇第二段语言点提示:be entitled to do/sth.
◇语言点提示:Waste not, want not.

Is Stress a Bad Thing?
Is Stress a Bad Thing?
In the past few years, quite a number of men and women have chosen to do something less competitive. They are afraid that the stress and strains of work will rob them of joy and happiness and do them harm both physically and mentally.
In fact, however, stress isn’t the bad thing it is often supposed to be. Above all, unless it gets out of control, a certain amount of stress is vital to provide motivation and challenge, and to give purpose and significance to an otherwise meaningless, idle life. Furthermore, people under stress tend to express their full range of potential and to actualize their own personal worth—the very aim of a human life.
Stress is a natural part of everyday life and there is no way to avoid it. What we can do is to develop our adaptive abilities to deal with it rather than to escape from it.

There are so many people under the unbearably high pressure in China. Heavy work demands and intense competition pile enormous pressure on the individuals who desperately try to pursue a more well-paid salary and push for a higher position. For students, exam pressure makes them overburdened and overwhelmed. Stress nearly confronts everyone at different degrees.
This phenomenon divides people. Some have a depressing and gloomy attitude toward the physical and mental strain. So stress is always blamed for someone's mental disorder, violence and even suicide. In contrast to their negatively reacting to stress, others may face up to the mounting pressure and keep an excellent mood.
How to properly and effectively cope with the huge pressure? First, people under the tremendous pressure can select a proper way to relax, such as watching movies, singing or playing. Repetitive tasks and no break will propel people to pay a hefty health price. Second, the over-high expectations leading to the strong strain must be lowered. Third, a chat with close friends is a favorably good way. Talking to them will alleviate enormous pressure.

标题:How to Achieve Success
How to Achieve Success
Some people say the key to success is the luck, while others claim it is hard work. As far as I am concerned, there are many factors contributing to success and the three fundamental ones are diligence, devotion and perseverance.
Diligence is the first key factor to success. Diligence helps us remove ignorance, overcome difficulties, and enlighten our minds. It makes a fool wise, and a poor man rich.
Devotion is another factor to success. Whatever we do, we must love it and do it whole-heartedly. Only when we set our minds on the job, can we do it well. Furthermore, perseverance, or a strong will, is the last key to success. Without a strong will, we are likely to give up when we meet some difficulties, let alone perform wonderful deeds.
To conclude, all great men achieve success through diligence, devotion and perseverance. Just as the famous saying goes, "No pains, no gains", "Where there is a will, there is a way."

题目:City Life and Suburban Life
写作提纲:1) 最近几年越来越多的人迁往近郊居住;
City Life and Suburban Life
In recent years more and more homes are being pushed outwards as the activities of business, government and pleasure tend to be concentrated in the centers of the cities. Although most people are reluctant to move to the outskirts of the cities, I feel like living in the suburbs.
It is true that the city can provide much convenience and entertainment, the very reason why people can't bear to part with city life. But the cost for the privilege of living in the city is also high. What's more, there is more gas and noise pollution in the city, which is full of petrol fumes and toxic gases. In contrast, living near the countryside one can enjoy the clean atmosphere, the closeness to nature and the quiet, peaceful surroundings --- the essentials of a healthy life. Although living in the suburbs one may suffer a little discomfort brought about by the necessity of traveling miles to work every day, it means nearly nothing when thinking of the high cost and heavily polluted environment of the city.
The new suburban life is fast becoming a predominant pattern of living in most cities; and with the improvement of traffic and the perfection of services, it will prove to hold great superiority over city life.

City Problems
Nowadays, millions of migrant workers flock into cities in search of jobs and better living. However, with the sharp rise in the urban population, many problems arise in the development of cities.
Firstly, cities become more and more crowded, putting much pressure upon transportation, housing, sanitation, education, employment and so on. City services and facilities have been strained to a breaking point. Secondly, a growing number of private cars emit huge amount of carbon dioxide, leaving the air mercilessly polluted. What is more, the city is also threatened by rising crime. Not a single day passes without the report of someone being robbed, kidnapped or murdered. Last but not least, city-dwellers are not only separated from the natural world but also isolated from each other, even not knowing the name of their next-door neighbor.
All these problems have harmed the attractiveness of the city. Unless there is some improvement, more and more people may seek to live in the suburbs.

How People Spent Their Holidays
How People Spent Their Holidays
As can be seen from the table, the past decade have witnessed dramatic changes in the way people spent their holidays between 1994 and 2005. In 1994, 63% of people spent their holidays at home, while the figure dropped considerably to 24% in 2005. It is obvious from the table that people tended to be more and more mobile, and they wanted to get entertainment in the outside world.
What contributed to these changes? I think the reasons are as follows. To start with, with the rapid development of economy, people earn by far more money than they used to. Thus, people are able to afford traveling expenses. Secondly, people think it important to get well-informed about the outside world in this new era when everything is on the move. Traveling, of course, is a sure way to ac hieve this goal. What’s more, in this competitive society, people are usually under great stress, and traveling is an effective way to relieve people’s stress and get relaxation. Last but not least, by traveling outside, people are close to nature, which is beneficial to both their health and peace of mind.
In conclusion, people prefer to go traveling rather than stay at home during holidays for a combination of reasons. Moreover, it seems that this trend will last in the foreseeable future.

The topic : Changes in People’s Diet.
Study the following table carefully and your composition must be based on the information given in the table. Write three paragraphs to:
1. state the changes in people’s diet in the past five years
2. give possible reasons for the changes
Changes in People’s Diet
As can be seen from the table, the past five years has witnessed dramatic changes in people’s diet. Grain used to be the Chinese main food, but now it is playing a less important role in people’s diet, while the consumption of some high-energy foods, such as milk and meat, has increased steadily.
What caused these changes? I think the reasons are as follows. In the first instance, with the development of our society, people have more money on hand and at the same time, there are more side-line products(副产品)available for them to choose from. In the past, however, they were poor and could not afford these things; they may change their one-side diet(不均衡饮食)into a varied one. In the second instance, people nowadays pay more attention to the structure of their diet. They are seeking a most reasonable diet structure to keep them fit. Meat, milk, eggs and fruit are very important to people’s health.
In a word, with the development of our economy and the improvement of food supply, following a healthy diet will be the trend of our modern society.

June 16, 2006 Dear John,
I’m very glad to hear that you have passed the entrance examination and been accepted by a very famous university. I feel very proud of you and I believe you really deserve the honor since you have been working so hard.
As you have mentioned in the letter, there are both some similarities and differences between the college life and the life in high school. On the one hand, you have to go on working hard as there are a lot of subjects for you to learn. On the other hand, in high school, teachers will probably tell you what to learn and how to learn in details and will also monitor your learning performance, while in college, teachers work like tour guides and you have to find out your own way to acquire knowledge and solve problems.
For you, I think to be optimistic is very important. If you hope to adapt yourself to the new environment, you’d better be positive no matter what difficulties you will experience in your college life. May you adapt yourself to the college life as soon as possible!
Truly Yours,
Carl

The topic:My opinion on Campus Love.
Outline: 1. Some people are strongly against campus love, but Some people accept it. 2.
My opinion on Campus Love
My opinion on Campus Love
Campus love isn't a newly-born phenomenon. Some people are strongly against it while some others think it's natural. I don't advocate it. The reasons are as follows.
First of all, undergraduates are neither fully psychologically mature nor able to assume the responsibility. Second, they may indulge in it, and thus dilapidate their study, which isn't rare. Third, some just take advantage of it to kill time, avoid boredom with much time at their own disposals, have someone keep company, etc. What's more, some change dating "partners" frequently, which leaves a bad impression, such as lacking the sense of responsibility, on others, especially their former sweethearts. Last, the proportion of successful couples is too low. The overwhelming majority reach the same end--parting just before graduation, forced by reality, etc.
So, look before you leap, discard campus love and make a wiser decision after graduation.

Worse still, the smell of some students’ socks is powerful enough to drive other members out of the room.
As is known to all, a harmonious dormitory life is important to college students and benefits all the members. On the one hand, we can have a good rest and put our heart into study. On the other hand, we will have a good mood and enjoy being together. In contrast, an unharmonious life will be depressing and counterproductive.
There are several ways to create and maintain a harmonious dormitory life. Firstly, you have to evaluate your life style and try to get rid of your dirty habits, if there are any. Secondly, when an annoying situation arises, you’ll just have to learn to tolerate each other and coexist. Thirdly, you’ll have to share with each other and make good friends.
In conclusion, we should try our best to build a harmonious dormitory life for the purpose of good study and good life.
