阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
Are you interested in hi-tech products? Here are some that you might find at the market pretty soon.
CX-1
Tired of dragging your bag through busy airports? Then you might want to consider CX-1. The smart suitcase uses facial recognizing software to follow its owner as he / she is checking in or heading to the gate. Though CX-1 can only move at a speed of up to seven miles per hour, a tiny tool enables owners to keep track of the suitcase’s location. It is expected to be sold on the market by late 2018.
Aibo
Sony’s latest version of the Aibo robotic dog is almost as fun as the real thing—but much less work. The pet dog can recognize its owner, obey several commands, and even recall the behavior that pleases its master the most. Aibo can also learn new tricks, take photographs, and over time, develop its own unique personality.
Forpheus
Forpheus, an “athletic” robot developed by Japanese technology company Omron. It teaches users how to play ping-pong. The 10-feet-tall machine uses a camera and artificial intelligence to track the ball’s speed and can predict the ball’s direction correctly. The smart Forpheus can also quickly test its player’s abilities and adjust the playing level, making the game fun.
Black Box VR
Though many people determine to go to the gym once a week, few reach their goal. Black Box VR wants to change that by turning hard exercise into fun video games. Using it, gym users will find themselves fighting enemies, including big creatures—all while getting exercise.
21. What is the feature of CX-1?
A. It can be opened by facial expressions.
B. It can recognize and follow its owner.
C. It can move very fast in busy places.
D. It can sense the suitcase’s location.
22. Who would most probably want an Aibo?

Located in the checkroom in Union Station as I am, I see everybody that comes up the stairs.
Harry came in a little over three years ago and waited for the passengers from the 9:05 train.
I remember seeing Harry that first evening. He wasn’t much more than a thin, anxious kid then and I knew he was meeting his girl and that they would be married twenty minutes after she arrived. The passengers came up and I had to get busy. I didn’t look toward the stairs again until it was nearly time for the 9:18 train and I was very surprised to see that the young fellow was still there.
She didn’t come on the 9:18 either, nor on the 9:40, and when the passengers from the 10:02 had all arrived and left, Harry was looking pretty desperate. He showed me the telegram he’d received: ARRIVE THURSDAY. MEET ME STATION. LOVE YOU. MAY.
Harry met every train for the next three or four days, but in vain.
Then came yesterday. I heard a cry and found that it was from Harry. He grabbed a girl who was small and dark. For a while they just hung there to each other laughing and crying and saying things without meaning. She’d say a few words like, “I t was the bus station I meant” and he’d kiss her speechless and tell her the many things he had done to find her. What apparently had happened three years before was that May had come by bus, not by train, and in her telegram she meant “bus station,” not “railroad station.” She had waited at the bus station for days and had spent all her money trying to find Harry. Finally she got a job typing.
“What?” said Harry. “Have you been working in town? All the time?”
She nodded.
“Didn’t you ever come down here to the station?” He pointed across to a magazine stand. “I’ve been there all the time. I own it. I’ve watched everybody that came up the stairs.”
She began to look a little pale. Pretty soon she looked over at the stairs and said in a weak voice, “I never cam e up the stairs before. Harry, for three years, for three solid years, I’ve been right over there working right in this very station, typing, in the office of the stationmaster.”
24. Why did Harry look desperate?
A. Because he missed the train that he should take.
B. Because the train he waited for didn’t come.
C. Because his girlfriend didn’t turn up.
D. Because his girlfriend arrived late.
25. Which of the following is NOT true according to the text?
A. The girl worked as a typist to earn a living.
B. Harry owned a stand at the station.
C. The girl phoned Harry to meet her at the bus station.
D. Harry and the girl both worked at the train station.
26. We can infer from the passage that _____________.
A. the girl’s name is May.
B. the girl arrived by bus yesterday.
C. Harry was quite strong when he first arrived here.
D. Harry worked in the office of the stationmaster.
27. What is the best title for the passage?

C
Why do you go to the library? For books, yes-but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else’s life. At one type of library, you can do just that-even though there’s not a single book.
A t a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people. Individuals volunteer as human “books” and participants in the event can “read” the book
-meaning they would have a one-on-one conversation with the volunteer and share in a dialogue about that i ndividual’s experience. “Books” are volunteers from all walks of life who have experienced discrimination (歧视) based on race, religion, class, gender identity, age, lifestyle choices, disability and other aspects of their life.
For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating and as attractive as any you can find in a book. Many of the stories have to do with some kind of stereotype. You can speak with a refugee
(难民), a soldier suffering from PTSD, a homeless person or a woman living with HIV. The Human Library encourages people to challenge their own long-held beliefs to truly get to know, and learn from someone they might otherwise make a quick judgment about.
According to its website, the Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.” It provides the opportunity for the community to share and understand the experiences of others in their community.
The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen, Denmark in 2000. Ronni Abergel and his colleagues hosted a four-day event during a major Northern European festival, hoping to raise awareness about violence among youth. After the success of this event, Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, which has been growing ever since.
Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren’t places at all, but events. Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don’t need a library card-anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe, in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.
The stories these “books” tell range from fascinating to heartbreaking and everything in between. And that’s the very point of the organization-to prove that no person can be summed up in just one word. It seeks to show people that you truly can’t judge a book by its cover-or by its title or label.
28. The “books” in human libraries are_____________.
A. long-held beliefs attracting individuals
B. inspiring stones motivating people in trouble
C. events in which people can talk to volunteers
D. unfairly-treated people sharing their experiences
29. The event in Copenhagen is significant because it_____________.
A. aimed to help the young suffering from violence
B. attempted to replace traditional physical libraries
C. laid a foundation for the Human Library Organization
D. led to a pleasing development for the community with racism
30. In human libraries, the readers are likely to_____________.
A. deepen their understanding of people
B. enrich their own personal experiences.
C. hear the stories told by celebrities from all over the world
D. make quick judgments about the “books”
31. The main purpose of the passage is to_____________.
A. evaluate and educate
B. inform and explain
C. discuss and persuade
D. analyze and suggest
【答案】28. D 29. C 30. A 31. B

A Scientist turns out to be able to see the future by offering each of some four-year-olds a piece of candy and watching how he or she deals with it. Some children reach eagerly for the treat they see. Some last a few minutes before they give in. But others are determined to wait until the last moment.
By the time the children reach high school, something remarkable has happened.
A survey found that those who as four-year-olds had enough self-control to hold out generally grew up to be more popular, adventurous, confident and dependable. The children who gave in to temptation early were more likely to be lonely, easily frustrated and inflexible.
Actually, the ability to delay reward is a sign of emotional intelligence which doesn’t show up on an IQ test.
The hardware of the brain and the software of the mind have long been scientists’ concerns. But brain theory can’t explain what we wonder about most, like the question why some people remain upbeat in the face of troubles that would sink a less resistant person.
Here comes the theory of Daniel Goleman, writer of Emotional Intelligence: when it comes to predicting people’s success, brain ability measured by IQ may actually matter less than the qualities of mind once thought of as “character”.
EQ is not the opposite of IQ. What researchers have been trying to understand is how they work together; how one’s ability to handle stress, for instance, affects the ability to concentrate and put intelligence to use. Among the ingredients for success, researchers now generally agree that IQ accounts for about 20%; the rest depends on everything from social class to luck.
While many researchers in this relatively new field are glad to see emotional issues finally taken seriously, some few fear EQ invites misuse.
32. The experiment with the four-year-olds makes it clear that __________.
A. the age of 4 is a proper time for scientific experiment
B. emotional intelligence won’t show up until adolescence
C. the ability of self-control plays a role in personal success
D. candy can be used to measure a person’s emotional intelligence
33. Which of the following is true according to the text?
A. The higher a person’s EQ is, the higher his or her IQ is.
B. The higher a person’s IQ is, the lower hi s or her EQ is.
C. A person’s success totally depends on his or her EQ.
D. Scientists have been trying to discover how EQ and IQ work together.
34. The underlined word “upbeat” in Paragraph 4 probably means __________.
A. kind
B. floating
C. excited
D. optimistic
35. What is most likely to be written in the paragraph that follows?
A. Information about famous people with high EQ.
B. Examples showing the opposite voice about EQ.
C. Some reasons why EQ is a relatively new field.
D. Strong demands for basic emotional education.
【答案】32. C 33. D 34. D 35. B
【解析】
【分析】

对比that would sink a less resistant soul可知upbeat是“乐观积极”的意思,故选D。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。

It should come as no surprise that the more stressed parents are at work, the greater the burden on their family is. ______36______ After all, the more time parents spend working, the less time and energy they have to plan and prepare healthful meals. Previously, most studies have focused on the role of working mothers while fathers were ignored. ______37______ It adds a new wrinkle to the relationship between work stress and family nutrition. Mom’s work related stress is still a central factor in how well families eat because they typically do most of the food shopping and cooking. ______38______
The study finds that when mom or dad experience high levels of work related stress, their families are eating one-and-a-half fewer family meals per week, and the parents
themselves report eating fewer fruits and vegetables, more fast food, and are less likely to eat breakfast regularly.
It’s worth noting that the study looks mainly at low income families who belong to ethnic or minority groups. ______39______ But the implications are wide-ranging.
______40______ Teaching kids, especially teenagers, to help with grocery shopping and to cook actual meals, instead of just putting a frozen pizza in the microwave, could be an important piece of the puzzle in helping families improve their eating habits.
A. But dad’s work related stress has a large impact, too.
B. As to family nutrition, the entire family plays a role, even kids.
C. Yet, the kid’s stress may affect the families’ nutrition, too.
D. So the findings don’t necessarily apply directly to other types of families.
E. It’s also probably not a surprise that this can negatively affect a family’s nutrition.
F. Now, a study looks at the family as a whole and at the role of fathers in particular.
G. It is parents who give their kids a good model to develop a good eating habit. 【答案】36. E 37. F

The snow was falling and the roads had become dangerous. The schools were dismissed early, but much to my surprise, my ___41___ wasn’t canceled. So I went, feeling especially heroic. As far as I could see, I was risking my life to keep my ___42___. Snow or no snow, I would be on time for my scheduled donation at the local ___43___ center.
When I got there, I discovered I wasn’t ___44___. Four more “hero-types” were already lying back in donor chairs with lines ___45___ to their veins(静脉), and machines quietly pumping away to ___46___ their lifesaving gifts.
Seeing my fellow donors honoring their own commitments, I realized why I was there.
I lay back in my donor chair, ready to make a ___47___ to the life of someone I would never ___48___.
To be honest, I’d never really thought about why I donate. I just did it. ___49___ a few months ago, during one of my ___50___ donations I learned that my blood was specifically for a cancer patient and for a newborn baby—both patients needed what I would give in order to live. I’ve viewed my visits to the blood center ___51___ ever since.
My wife Karen is a ___52___, too. And more importantly, she has been on the bone marrow (骨髓) list for fifteen years, ever since she ___53___ to provide bone marrow to a kindergartner with leukemia(白血病). That little girl died before Karen’s bone marrow could help her, but Karen was called again recently. Her test results were still on file, and it turned out she was a potential ___54___ for someone else. The caller asked Karen if she would still be willing to become a bone marrow donor. “Yes,” she said and then immediately began answering questions on the pages of paperwork for further testing. It was a race ___55___ time.
I wish I could say that this ___56___ was won. It wasn’t. The caller later thanked Karen for her participation and asked a few more questions—including whether or not she’d ___57___on the donor list. “Of course,” Karen answered.
Last week Karen gave blood and next week I’ll make my usual donation. I’ll clear an afternoon from my schedule and make an appointment. I don’t know whose life my donation may ___58___. Most likely it will be a ___59___, but on any day the person needing blood could be you or me or maybe a loved one. It is worthwhile to ___60___our time to donate.
I really do feel proud every time I donate. And I like the feeling.
