(10 points)The Internet affords anonymity to its users, a blessing to privacy and freedom of speech. But that very anonymity is also behind the explosion of cyber-crime that has 1 across the Web.Can privacy be preserved 2 bringing safety and security to a world that seems increasingly 3 ?Last month, Howard Schmidt, the nation’s cyber-czar, offered the federal government a 4 to make the Web a safer place-a “voluntary trusted identity” system that would be the high-tech 5 of a physical key, a fingerprint and a photo ID card, all rolled 6 one. The system might use a smart identity card, or a digital credential 7 to a specific computer .and would authenticate users at a range of online services. The idea is to 8 a federation of private online identity systems. User could 9 which system to join, and only registered users whose identities have been authenticated could navigate those systems. The approach contrasts with one that would require an Internet driver’s license 10 by the government.Google and Microsoft are among companies that already have these“single sign-on”systems that make it possible for users to 11 just once but use many different services.12 .the approach would create a “walled garden” n cyberspace, with safe “neighborhoods” and bright “streetlights” to establish a sense of a 13 community.Mr. Schmidt described it as a “voluntary ecosystem” in which “individuals and organizations can complete online transactions with 14 ,trusting the identities of each other and the identities of the infrastructure 15 which the transaction runs”.Still, the administration’s plan has 16 privacy rights activists. Some applaud the approach; others are concerned. It seems clear that such a scheme is an initiative push toward what would 17 be a compulsory Internet “drive’s license” mentality. The plan has also been greeted with 18 by some computer security experts, who worry that the “voluntary ecosystem” envisioned by Mr. Schmidt would still leave much of the Internet 19 .They argue that all Internet users should be 20 to register and identify themselves, in the same way that drivers must be licensed to drive on public roads. 1. Answer the questions after each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40points)Text 1Ruth Simmons joined Goldman Sachs’s board as an outside director in January 2000: a year later she became president of Brown University. For the rest of the decade she apparently managed both roles without attracting much eroticism. But by the end of 2009 Ms. Simmons was under fire for having sat on Goldman’s compensation committee; how could she have let those enormous bonus payouts pass unremarked? By February the next year Ms. Simmons had left the board. The position was just taking up too much time, she said.Outside directors are supposed to serve as helpful, yet less biased, advisers on a firm’s board. Having made their wealth and their reputations elsewhere, they presumably have enough independence to disagree with the chief executive’s proposals. If the sky, and the share price is falling, outside directors should be able to give advice based on having weathered their own crises. The researchers from Ohio University used a database hat covered more than 10,000 firms and more than 64,000 different directors between 1989 and 2004. Then they simply checked which directors stayed from one proxy statement to the next. The most likely reason for departing a board was age, so the researchers concentrated on those “surprise” disappearances by directors under the age of 70. They fount that after a surprise departure, the probability that the company will subsequently have to restate earnings increased by nearly 20%. The likelihood of being named in a federalclass-action lawsuit also increases, and the stock is likely to perform worse. The effect tended to be larger for larger firms. Although a correlation between them leaving and subsequent bad performance at the firm is suggestive, it does not mean that such directors are always jumping off a sinking ship. Often they “trade up.” Leaving riskier, smaller firms for larger and more stable firms. But the researchers believe that outside directors have an easier time of avoiding a blow to their reputations if they leave a firm before bad news breaks, even if a review of history shows they were on the board at the time any wrongdoing occurred. Firms who want to keep their outside directors through tough times may have to create incentives. Otherwise outside directors will follow the example of Ms. Simmons, once again very popular on campus.21. According to Paragraph 1, Ms. Simmons was criticized for .[A]gaining excessive profits[B]failing to fulfill her duty[C]refusing to make compromises[D]leaving the board in tough times22. We learn from Paragraph 2 that outside directors are supposed to be .[A]generous investors[B]unbiased executives[C]share price forecasters[D]independent advisers23. According to the researchers from Ohio University after an outside director’ssurprise departure, the firm is likely to .[A]become more stable[B]report increased earnings[C]do less well in the stock market[D]perform worse in lawsuits24. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that outside directors .[A]may stay for the attractive offers from the firm[B]have often had records of wrongdoings in the firm[C]are accustomed to stress-free work in the firm[D]will decline incentives from the firm25. The author’s attitude toward the role of outside directors is .[A]permissive[B]positive[C]scornful[D]criticalTEXT 1 参考答案21.A。

Listening 2Maya

2011年9月中级口译笔试真题完整版(含答案)SECTION 1: LISTENING TEST (45 minutes)Part A: Spot DictationDirection:In this part of the test, you will hear a passage and read the same passage with blanks in it. Fill in each of the blanks with the words you have heard on the tape. Write your answer in the corresponding space in your ANSWER BOOKLET. Remember you will hear the passage ONLY ONCE.In America there are no nobles or men of letters, and the common folk mistrust the wealthy; Consequently lawyers form the highest political class and the most cultivated circle of society. They have therefore nothing to gain by innovation, which adds a conservative interest to their natural taste for public order. If I were asked where I place the American aristocracy, I should reply without hesitation that it is not composed of the rich, who are united together by no common tie, but that it occupies the judicial bench and the bar. When I started researching this topic, I found an interesting website “Legal Reform Now”.As the name suggests, this website is devoted to legal reform and it is definitely concerned about the dominance of lawyers in American government. There I read an article by a political science professor from the university of Wisconsin. One observation the UW article confirms is that the legal profession is the dominant profession of the people re-elect to public office. For example, about half our representatives and two-thirds of our senators are lawyers. No other profession comes close to having the same the number of people in political office. Effectively, lawyers form our nation‟s most powerful organized po litical constituency in America. Lawyers make our laws and lawyers interpret our laws. When judges are appointed, the American bar association is the only professional organization that is consulted to rate the fitness of potential judicial appointees. Our nation has been in existence for over 200 years and lawyers have been this nation‟s aristocracy since its formation. Our system works, but do we really want to have a single profession in charge of our nation? Specifically, do we want to have the legal profession in charge? Next time you vote, that‟s something to think about.

You have a long holiday I suppose.M: Well, I’ve finished my studies. You know, and I have found a job in a shipping firm. But I have three months holiday before I start to work. So I thought I just take some time to go around the world. If I need money, I just work where I am. You know, mainly teaching English to young children. I used to work in the school and I like children. But at the moment I am just having a holiday, wonderful here. I first arrived in Europe a couple of weeks ago. I went to France and…er… I came around… er… through Britain, I went right across the Japan and then Korea, now here I am in China.W: Wonderful! You must tell us all about your travels. Maybe we could ask Carrie to make a cake.W: Yeah, let’s do that. Perhaps we could just give the party in the office and put up some balloons.W: That’s great. I think we should also buy a really big card, a huge card. We should get everybody to sign it.M: Shall we have some music?W: I was thinking exactly that myself. Bye.Text 9M: How are your home-stay families chosen?W: We have special requirements that the families must meet before they are invited to have our international students. We require that the families live within a reasonable distance of the school, have enough living space for the student and live in a clean, safe and comfortable area. We also work with the families to enjoy having international students. We try to match each student with a family as best we can.M: If I stay with a home-stay family, what should I expect?W: The family will treat you as a guest and you will be expected to obey house rules. All families provide single or shared room and a choice of meals. In most cases, students will be expected to share the bathroom. Experience has shown us that living with a family is the most interesting and effective way to learn the language. Remember, your home-stay family will have different customs and habits from what you perhaps are used to. Meals would be prepared by the family. All home-stay families are within 30 minutes’ traveling time of the school. The smaller the city, the less time it takes to reach the school.Text 10M: Good morning, children and parents. Welcome to the Neighborhood Children’s Club. To celebrate the end of the school year, we’ve prepared for the children all kinds of gifts, such as sweets, chocolates, bookmarks and pencils. To increase the fun, we’ve hidden them for the children to find around this building. Here is the information you need to know. First of all, we need all children to put your names down at the desk at that corner because it will be divided intoage groups. You haven’t done it yet, please do it now. Then if you’re ready, preschool children will be going out of this front door. And we will encourage their parents to go with them. Outside this door, you will see flags as the marking for your area. There will be some helpers to direct you if you are in the first to third grade, you are going right outside that back door to search in the yard. The parents of this group are welcome to go with the children. But maybe your children don’t need you. Finally, the fourth graders are up, the three of you, please follow me down the hall through the double doors and choose the other side of the building where you’ll be going to look for your gifts.
