S. usually means slower days, and noschool teachers know, however, that vacation means students will likely fallbehind, and forget things they learned during the year. Simon Vanderpool, aspecial education teacher in Lexington, Kentucky, decided to do something aboutit. He started a program called Books and Barbers. Children go to the barber, choose a book andread out loud while the barber cuts their hair. The child gets a sticker andcan take the book home. And there is an added bonus: money. The kids get paid to read.Vanderpool says barber shops are places where kids can feelcomfortable.“Once a student feels comfortable, that’s whenever the brainopens up, and that they are able to start focusing on nothing but learning.”Amir Shalash owns a barber shop. But he is doing more than cuttingchildren’s hair. He is listening to them read, and helping them with theirreading. Most of the children getting haircuts at barber shops areboys. Vanderpool’s idea was to do more thanjust help them with reading and money. The teacher wants to help kids who aregrowing up in a home without a father liike he did. A dronethatfloats over the blowholes of humpback whales as they ar e making annual journeyalong Australia’s east coast is being used by Australian scientists forcollecting nasal mucusofwhales.Vanessa Pirotta, a biologist at Macquarie University saysthat nasal mucus indicates the health of the whale. “It is the biologica lmixture that you see as a whale takes a breath as it surfaces from the water,” she said. You can hear sounds ofsharp breaths as a whale breathes because, after all, they are animals like youand I. So as they take a breath it is a lot of lung bacteria coming out fromtheir lungs, which we can collect to provide a brief idea of whale health.Australian researchers have attached a special dish that isused in scientific tests to a drone which flies through the whale’s nasal mist.As a whale comes to take a breath—you can actually see it coming to the surfaceon really good weather days —the drone then lowers, the dish is thenopened, collecting nasal mucus for later research. The research could help to solve one of the secrets ofanother impressive creature of the deep —the Southern right whale. Its numbershave recovered on Australia’s west coast since hunting became suppressedbut its population on the eastern seaboard remains stubbornly low.In the past, studies into whale health had to rely onexamining whales that were either killed or those whales that had been trappedon a beach. Drones allow scientists to collect nasal mucus from free-swimmingwhales to gather information in a safe way.(1)What is the drone mainly used to do?A . To gather information for researchers.B . To record new species of whales.C . To guarantee the safety of whales.D . To take photos of whales’ annual journey.(2)How can a biologist find out a whale’s health condi tion in the study?A . By examining liquids from its breath.B . By checking its lungs on a machine.C . By listening to the sounds of its breath.D . By studying its similarity with humans.(3)What does the underlined word “suppressed” in Paragraph 4 mean?A . Commercial.B . Rewarding.C . Hidden.D . Forbidden.(4)Why is the Southern right whale mentioned?A . To describe the difficulty to track it.B . To show the increasing population.C . To stress the urgency of doing the research.D . To indicate the potential application of the research.4. 阅读理解Google previously announced successful tests of machinelearning systems designed to assist doctors. In one case, Google reported AIhad examined eye diseases with equal accuracy to doctors. Other tests showedthat machine learning can be used to study large amounts of patient data topredict future medical events. Now the company has published two new studies showing a highlevel of success in identifying metastatic breast cancer. Metastatic means thatcancer has spread from its main area to other parts of the body. Metastaticbreast cancer is one of the deadliest, causing about 90 percent of all breastcancer deaths worldwide. In metastatic breast cancer patients, the cancer oftentravels to nearby lymph nodes(淋巴结). Usually doctors examine lymph nodetissue under a microscope to see whether cncer is present Google notes thatprevious studies have shown that up to one-fourth of metastatic lymph nodeclassifications end up being changed after a second examination. In addition, studies show that small metastatic material can be missed up to 67 percent ofthe time when examinations happen under extreme time restrictions.Google says it created a mathematical algorithm.Thealgorithm, called Lymph Node Assistant, is trained to find characteristics oftissue affected by metastatic cancer. When the system examined tissue images , itwas able to differentiate between metastatic cancer and non-cancer 99 percentof the time. In addition, the Lymph NodeAssistant is highly effective at finding the positions ofthe cancers. Some of these positions would be too small for doctors themselvesto identify. The research also showed that the algorithm method can reduce theusual time needed to examine the disease by about 50 percent. But Google makes clear the Al-based system is not meant toreplace the work of medical professionals. Instead, it is designed to reducethe number of false identifications and help doctors work faster and moreeffectively.(1)What is the main idea of Paragraph 1?A . Google became a pioneer in training doctors.B . Machine learning is able to stop future medical events.C . Google developed artificial intelligence to help doctors.D . Artificial intelligence cured eye diseases with equal accuracy to doctors.(2)What can we infer about metastatic breast cancer?A . One-fourth of the metastatic breast cancer patients die in the end.B . Metastatic breast cancer is very difficult to identify.C . It results in 90 percent of deaths of all cancers.D . It can be identified after a second examination.(3)What is the advantage of Google’s new mathematical algorithm?A . It can offer effective treatment.B . It can tell the exact positions of cancers.C . It costs 99 percent less time than before.D . It improves the accuracy of identifying cancers by 50%.(4)What influence will the mathematical algorithm bring?A . False identification of cancers will be avoided.B . More effective prevention of cancers will be found.C . The number of medical professionalswill be reduced.D . Doctors can have a faster understanding of patients’ condition.二、任务型阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)5. 根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

He was knocking loudly on her neighbor’s door. (18) She knew Frank was going to be late for school, but she didn’t dare to let him leave. A few minutes later, she heard the police arrive. She knew they would be safe then, so she told her son he could leave. But when Frank opened the door, their cat ran out into the yard. (19) Amber ran after the cat, but it ran to the left. Just as the cat was picking up speed, Amber finally caught up to it. She grabbed it by the tail and shouted as if she just won a victory. Just then, she looked up and saw a shiny car entering her neighborhood. It was the Stevensons, the “perfect” neighbors with all the right friends. And there was Amber, standing in her nightshirt, surrounded by police cars, and holding a scared cat in the air by the tail. (20)。

Although the amputation caused inconvenience for Gallagher early on, she now sees it as nothing short of inspiration for living her best life.To spread that message, Gallagher has gone to social media, where she shares photos of her travels across the world, but instead of simply using a geo-tag(地理位置标签), she writes her location on her artificial leg before taking a picture. Now she has been taking pictures across the Continent, which show her cycling over the canal in Amsterdam, relaxing on a wall overlooking the city of Barcelona, posing with a waffle in Brussels, taking in the beautiful Parthenon temple in Athens and enjoying a river ride in Budapest, all with the well-known locations written on her artificial leg.“I get a new leg every two years and I can choose the design on it. One dayI had a sudden thought to get a chalk-board,” Gallagher said. “My mum and grandmother didn’t like the idea, but my friends thought it was great and told meto go for it, so I did.”Gallagher sa id people often stare when she’s writing on her leg, but once sheshares the photos, she receives only positive feedback(反馈), “My leg hasn’tstopped me from doing anything I’ve wanted to do,” she said. “I don’t know ifit’s my determination to prove to myself that I can do it, anyway, I’ve been ableto keep up with people at my age and lead a pretty great life.”Gallagher shows us that you should never let anything stand in the way of your dreams. Gallagher’s Summer HolidaysCEvery year from March to October, Christian Moullec, also known as “Birdman,”takes aboard his adapted light aircraft to the skies. However, the 58-year-old Frenchman’s daily 30-minute flight is not just to enjoy the impressive views, butto guide flocks (鸟群) of lesser white-fronted geese (小白额雁) through safe migration paths which the birds can teach future generations. His deed began in 1995 when he noticed their declining population in the wildsof Lapland, Sweden. To prevent their numbers from dropping further, Moullec tried to get the threatened species to follow him along migration routes that would protect them from bird hunters. However, getting grown geese to follow his lead proved challenging. As young geese imitate and follow whomever they view as their parent, Moullec decided to raise the geese from birth. To help raise funds and awareness of his job to protect not just the geese but birds worldwide, Moullec often allows paying tourists to join him on the 30-minute-long flights aboard his aircraft. In addition to the trained birds flying alongside them, visitors, who come from as far as a 15-hour plane flight away, are treated to a variety of crane and geese species as well as breathtaking views of castles and cities. He often brings his camera along for the flights, capturing photos not just for their beauty, but mainly for what they suffer from. Moullec believes the use of agricultural chemicals has done harm to wild European birds, with more than a third disappearing in the last 30 years. “It’s a disaster.” he said, “My beautiful images with flying birds should be used to tell this story. ”28. Designed by Israeli company NUA Robotics, this “smart” suitcase can follow you everywhere you go.The carryon suitcase, now a prototype(雏形), connects to a smartphone app via bluetooth. It has a builtin camera sensor that can “see” you and follow you around on flat floors. It comes with an antitheft alarm to prevent someone carrying it away when you’re not looking. “It can follow and carry things for people around while communicating with their smartphone, and avoiding bumping into other objects,” explained Alex Libman, founder of NUA Robotics. “We’re combining sensor network, computer vision, and robotics. So if you download our app(应用), press the ‘follow me’ button, the luggage recognizes its user and knows to follow and communicate.”NUA is still testing the products and trying to improve features like speed and customization(客户订制), but they hope to make the suitcase available to customers in a year’s time. If it proves successful, they want to use the bluetooth pairi ng technology to automate(自动化操作)lots of other products, like shopping carts at the supermarket. These products are especially meant to be useful to the physically disabled and elderly. “Any object can be smart and robotic,” Libman told Mashable. “We want to bring robots into everyday life.”The Israeli tech company made it clear that the finished product will look just like a common suitcase. They’re planning to partner with a carryon luggage maker, since the product that makes it “smart” weighs just 2.5 p ounds and can be fitted on oldfashion luggage. With NUA’s smart suitcase, carrying around heavy luggage isn’t a burden. Catherine Zeta-Jones’.B. Renee Zellweger’s.C. Ryan Gosling’s.D. Christopher Plumme r’s.BIn today’s society , language plays a key role in defining gend er (性别) by vocabulary, and also their non-verbal (非语言的) vocabulary. Each one of these different types of ways of c ommunicating is obviously different between men and women .Many different studies show that men tend to talk much more than women. It has also been proven that women tend to speak faster than men; this is due to the fact that women tend to be interrupted more often than men are, and also have the abi lity to speak more clearly, precisely, and more quickly than m en. In one study it was found that women spoke for an averag e of three minutes describing a painting, as opposed to the thi rteen-minute average it took men to describe it.Men and women also tend to have a very different non-verbal way of communicating, which can also make it very har d for one another to understand what the opposite sex is tryin g to say. Men’s body language is much more reserved when t alking to women. Men tend not to make as much eye contact and they generally stay farther away from women when talkin g to them. Men avoid other people’s body space while talking, and they also tend to sit back when talking. All of these have given off the impression of disinterest or boredom. Women ar e by far better listeners and much more enjoyable to talk with and they tend to raise more topics for conversation.Women also make it clearer whether or not the conversation i s going somewhere or just stuck in neutral. After learning abo ut our styles of communicating with each other, I have decide d that although men have not quite mastered communicating, what fun would it be if we all spoke the same “language”? The little games men and women play with each other while conversing would be lost. The question everyone asks himself or h erself after talking with someone of the opposite sex, “I wonde r if there’s something there?” would no longer exist.4.What does the underlined word “this”in Paragraph 2 refer to ?A.The non-verbal vocabulary of men and women.B.The ability of men’ s and women’ s spoken language.C. The differences between men’ s and women’ s languages.D. The different speed of men’ s and women’ s speech.5. In what way do men and women differ according to the third paragraph?A.Speed of understanding.B.Application of body language.C.Politeness of communication.D.Understanding of speech roles.6. What is the author’s attitude to the differences between me n’s and women’s communication?A.favorable.B.cautious.C.ambiguous.D.skeptical.7. What is the best title for the text?A. Women, born excellent talkersB. Men’ s and women’ s social rolesC. Opposite gender, different languageD.Vocabul ary and communicationCEarlier this month, two rock climbers achieved what many tho ught impossible: They climbed up the 3,000-foot-high Dawn Wall in Yosemite National Park without specialized equipment. Climbing without this equipment is called “free-climbing.” Until now, no one had free-climbed to the top of the rockface, which is a part of the moun tain EI Capitan.El Capitan, which means“the captain”or“the chief”in Spanis h, has always presented a challenge to climbers. But the Daw n Wall, on the mountain's southeast face, is a particularly diffi cult route to the summit (顶峰). It is a rock formation that is both steep and relatively smo oth. This makes free-climbing the rock face seem almost impossible.About seven years ago, professional climber Tommy Caldw ell spotted a possible route up the wall. It took years of planni ng and preparation, but this month, Caldwell, 36, and his frien d Kevin Jorgeson, 30, finally made the climb.Free climbers do use ropes and other basic safety equipme nt to catch them if they fall—and Caldwell and Jorgeson fell often. Before starting their clim b, they broke down their route into 32 sections. Each section was based on a rope length called a“pitch.”The rope was sec ured into the rock face to catch the climbers if they fell.Caldwell and Jorgeson's goal was to climb the Dawn Wall without returning to the ground. If they fell, they had to start th at pitch all over again. The two men started climbing on Dece mber 27. They slept in hanging tents, and a team of friends br ought them food each day.The men had spent years rehearsing (排练) the movements it would take to get through each pitch. Th ey made it through the first half of the climb relatively easily. B ut halfway up, Jorgeson ran into trouble. In one difficult spot, he fell each time he attempted to climb. After 10 days of trying , Jorgeson finally made it to the next pitch. Getting through th at troublesome pitch gave both climbers renewed energy. The y finished the rest of the climb five days later, on January 14. What does Paragraph 2 mainly explain?A. How El Capitan got its name.B. Why people prefer climbing El Capitan.C. How to free-climb the Dawn Wall.D. Why the Dawn Wall is a hard challenge.9. To climb Yosemite's Dawn Wall,Caldwell and Jorgeson____ ________.A. made thoughtful preparationsB. c hose the nearest routeC. received one year's trainingD. used special equipment10. What can we learn about this world’s toughest climb?A. It includes 32 different routes.B. It is also the wo rld’s highest climb.C. It was once completed by Caldwell 7 years ago.D. It took the two climbers 19 days to get to the top.11. Which of the following words can best describe Jorgeson?A. Proud but patient.B. Cautious and friendly.C. Imaginative but half-hearted. D. Brave and determinedDApple and Microsoft each launched new products. One comp any astonished everyone. The other made people sleepy. Ca n you guess which was which? You probably guessed wrong. Because Apple, famous for its creative products, was the tech giant whose new product caused a collective shrug. While Microsoft, which stole a move out of the Apple Playbook, won ch eers from high-end, creative-class consumers like business analysts, media designers and music producers. As Hayley Tsukayama remarked at The Washington Post, the Surface Studio, one of Microsoft's new products, is really just a super-sized version of the Surface Books product that Microsoft has been selling for years. But if you've ever watched science ficti on movies like Minority Report-- where Tom Cruise seems to operate pictures and data hangi ng on mid-air by touching them, spreading his fingers to increase on det ails, and sending files and information sliding from one folder t o another with a click of the finger, you can see how Microsoft is trying to show the same experience.Meanwhile, apple's new products were almost like some fine promotions for its Apple TV. They boast that the new Macboo k Pro has a smaller size and more functions, and a new touch screen bar on laptop keyboards where function keys used to be.So what's going on? In many ways, Apple is focusing on attra cting the average consumers who have been attracted by Microsoft. And Microsoft is focusing on targeting the high-end professionals Apple has historically been associated with. You can even see this is the companies' ad campaigns: Micr osoft's ads stress imagination and creativity, while Apple’s co mmercial chief performance and convenience of its Macbooks .So Apple is trying to control the world of devices and laptops f rom the top down, starting with the high-end market and moving on to appeal to a broader base of con sumers. Microsoft, having already strengthened itself within th e bigger low-end market, is now attempting the opposite with a bottom-up strategy. Will they succeed? Time will tell...12. What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Apple's products aim at high-end consumers.B. Microsoft's new products made a big hit.C. Apple and Microsoft developed the same products.D. The design of Microsoft's products is original and unique.13. Why does the author mention the science fiction movie in Paragraph 2?A. To show Microsoft’s new products are inspired by the movi e.B. To tell us Microsoft's new products can be used in movies.C. To encourage more people to see the science fiction movie .D. To show how trendy Microsoft’s new products are.14. What does the underlined word “boast” in paragraph 3 pro bably mean?A. to complainB. to informC. to announ ceD. to brag15. In which section of a newspaper can we most probably re ad this passage?A. Economics and Business.B. Leisu re and Entertainment.C. Culture and Education.D. Life and Fashion.第二节(共5小题,每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

An art show review.BTwo of the sadd est words in the English language are “if only”. I live my life with the goal of never having to say those words, because they convey regret, lost opportunities, mistakes, and disappointment. My father is famous in our family for saying “Take the extra m inute to do it right.” I always try to live by the “extra minute” rule. When my children were young and likely to cause accidents, I always thought about what I could do to avoid an “if only” moment, whether it was something minor like movinga cup full of hot coffee away from the edge of a counter, or something thatrequired a little more work such as taping padding (衬垫) onto the sharp corners of a glass coffee table.I don’t only avoid those “if only” moments when it comes to safety. It’sequally import ant to avoid “if only” in our personal relationships. We all know people who lost a loved one and regretted that they had foregone an opportunity to say “I love you” or “I forgive you.” When my father announced he was going to the eye doctor across from my office on Good Friday, I told him that it was a holiday for my company and I wouldn’t be here. But then I thought about the fact that he was 84 years old and I realized that I shouldn’t give up an opportunity to see him. I called him and told him I had decided to go to work on my day off after all.I know there will still be occasions when I have to say “if only” aboutsomething, but my life is definitely better because of my policy of doing everything possible to avoid that eventuality. And even though it takes an extra minute to do something right, or it occasionally takes an hour or two in my busy schedule to make a personal connection, I know that I’m doing the right thing. I’m buying myself peace of mind and that’s the best kind of insurance for my emotional well-being.25. Which of the following is an example of the “extra minute” rule?A. Start the car the moment everyone is seated.B. Leave the room for a minute with the iron working.C. Move an object out of the way before it trips someone.D. Wait for an extra minute so that the steak tastes better.26.The underlined word “foregone” in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaningto______. .A. abandonedB. avoidedC. lackedD. taken27. The author decided to go to her office on Good Friday to .A. join in the holiday celebration of the companyB. keep her appointment with the eye doctorC. finish her work before the deadline approachedD. meet her father who was already an old man28. What is the best title for the passage?A. The Two Saddest WordsB. The Most Useful RuleC. The Peace of MindD. The Emotional Well-beingCMelinda Skaar wasn't expecting any phone calls. Skaar was working late in her office at the First Internet bank of California. By 10:45 that night she was almost ready to go home when the phone rang. Picking it up, she heard a guard shouting, “There is a fire! Get out of there.” Skaar didn't panic. She figured that it was just a small fire. Her office building was huge. There were62 floors and her desk was on the 37th floor. Skaar called out to office mateStephen Oksas, who also stayed late to work. But when they got out to the hallway, they were met by a cloud of black smoke. Rushing back, Skaar shut the door and filled the space at the bottom of the door with her jacket to keep the smoke out. Then they called 911. Before they could call their families, however, the line went dead. That meant that they were completely cut off from the outside world. All they could do was wait and hope someone would come to rescue them.Minutes ticked by. Smoke began to float into the office. Soon it became hard for them to breathe. Looking around, Skaar noticed a small workroom. It seemed to have cleaner air. So they crowded there. That helped for a while, but in time even the workroom was filled with deadly smoke. Hopeless, they tried to break the windows, but the glass was not breakable. Everything they threw at it just bounced back. Defeated, they struggled back to the workroom. They felt weak and dizzy. While some of the increase may be due to better detection, researchers also believe it’s because we’re spending more time outdoors in the sun, vacationing to warmer climates during the winter and using tanning beds. That rise is concerning, since melanoma is the most dangerous kind of skin cancer. Most of us know to cover up and apply sunscreen on hot, sunny days, but when fall arrives, we tend to drop those habits. Experts warn that’s a mistake. Though there’s less need for sun protection after summer ends, exposure to UV rays still adds up.What precautions you should take to defend against melanoma during the cooler months depends on where you are in the world. That’s because the further away you are from the equator, the more UV rays weaken in the winter. “In southern England or Canada, the daily dose of UVA on a clear summer day is 6.5 times higher than on a clear winter day,” says Professor Brian Diffey of the British Association of Dermatologists. “People in those countries typically receive only about 5% of their annual UV exposure in the winter months.”But no matter where you are, even during colder, lower risk months, it’s a mistake to put your sun-protection habits on ice. “It’s important to wear sun-screen when there is a lot of glare from the snow,” says Victoria Mar, director of the Victorian Melanoma Service at Alfred Hospital in Melbourne, Australia. Finally, you should monitor your moles(痣). “Early detection of melanoma is vital for successful treatment,” says Diffey. If it’s caught before it spreads to other parts of the body, the patient will have 99 % of chance to survive for five years. If it’s caught late, that can drop to 25%. Warning signs are a mole that’s changing size, shape or colour, or one that’s asymmetrical — sometimes referred to as “ugly duckling” moles. If you have concerns, talk to your doctor.4. What’s the main cause of the rise ofmelanoma?A. The climate change.B. Better detection.C. More exposure to the sun.D. The increase ofskin cancer.5.What’s a mistake according to experts?A. Applying sunscreen in summer.B. Wearing sun-screen when there is snow.C. Using sunscreen during lower risk months.D. Dropping sun-protection habits in winter.6. What can we learn from the last paragraph?A. Prevention is better than cure.B. Health is better than wealth.C. A disease known is half cured.D. When the sun comes in, the doctor comes out.7. What is the best title of the text?A. Detect Melanoma.B. Beware Winter Rays.C. Monitor Your Moles.D. Running the length of the wall wasa brave expedition, venturing into sparsely populated regions wherethere was little chance of help if the runner had an accident. But it’s not aperfect solution.“First of all, it’sstill not bright enough—you have to remember how respectable sunlight is.”Shin-Tson Wu, a physicist at the University of Central Florida. The otherproblem, he says of the brightened screen, is it kills the battery. So Wu andcolleagues have produced a battery-sparing alternative: an anti-reflectivescreen-coating. Based on the eyes of moths. “Nature is so rich! We canlearn a lot from nature. “The thing Wu and others have learned aboutmotheyes, is that they’re uneven, dotted with tiny projections. That une ven surfacereduces the reflection of light off their eyes- thought to help the bugs escapepredators , and see better in lowlight. So Wu and his team built a similar surface with tiny dimples , to cut down on glare. He says the dimpled coating could improvethe readability of a screen by five to 10 times, compared to a normalsmart-phone screen. The details are in the journal Optica. The tech hasn’t beencommercialized yet, and that could take a few years. Which gives researcherstime to take advantage of another property of these surfaces: they’re flexible.Meaning the possibility of bendable displays. Combine that with the bendybatteries we reported on in a recent podcast , and it looks thesmart-phones of the future could be set for a real transformation.(1)Why do the researchers develop the anti-reflective screen-coating?A . To brighten the screen.B . To make profits.C . To take in the sunlight.D . To save the use of battery.(2)What inspired the invention of the screen?A . The predators.B . The reflection of light.C . In a world where self -satisfaction is emphasized, it is in short supply but high demand. This is allthe more reason to teach the next generation what it means to have empathy forthose around them. What Is Empathy? Manypeople confuse sympathy and empathy, but they are two distinct values. It means treating others with kindness, dignity, andunderstanding.Kids Need To See AdultsShow Empathy—While some children are gifted with naturally kind hearts, in mostcases kids need to see empathy modeled by the adults around them. It beginswith the way parents relate to their children. Parents who show an interest in thethings that matter to their kids and respond to emotions in a positive andcaring way are teaching the skill of empathy.Meet Emotional Needs—Whenchildren have their emotional needs met, two things happen. They learn how tomeet the emotional needs of others and they are anchored in what they arereceiving, meaning that they are secure enough to give to others when the needarises but first they need to receive. Anempty jug cannot fill a cup. It’s a good idea to talk tokids about emotions and how other people experience them. Give their emotionsnames and teach them that these arenormal. ATwo friends have an argument that breaks up their friendship forever, even though neither one can remember how the whole thing got started. Such sad events happen over and over in high schools across the country. In fact, according to an official report on youth violence, "In our country today, the greatest threat to the lives of children and adolescents is not disease or starvation or abandonment, but the terrible reality of violence". Given that this is the case, why aren't students taught to manage conflict the way they are taught to solve math problems, drive cars, or stay physically fit?First of all, students need to realize that conflict is unavoidable. A report on violence among middle school and high school students indicates that most violent incidents between students begin with a relatively minor insult (侮辱). For example, a fight could start over the fact that one student eats a peanut butter sandwich each lunchtime. Laughter over the sandwich can lead to insults, which in turn can lead to violence. The problem isn't in the sandwich, but in the way students deal with the conflict.Once students recognize that conflict is unavoidable, they can practice the golden rule of conflict resolution (解决) -stay calm. Once the student feelscalmer, he or she should choose words that will calm the other person down as well. Rude words, name-calling, and accusation only add fuel to the emotional fire. On the other hand, soft words spoken at a normal sound level can put out the fire before it explodes out of control. After both sides have calmed down, they can use another key strategy for conflict resolution: listening. Listening allows the two sides to understand each other. One person should describe his or her side, and the other person should listen without interrupting. Afterward, the listener can ask non-threatening questions to clarify the speaker's position. Then the two people should change roles. Finally, students need to consider what they are hearing. This doesn't mean trying to figure out what's wrong with the other person. It means understanding what the real issue is and what both sides are trying to accomplish. For example, a shouting match over a peanut butter sandwich might happen because one person thinks the other person is unwilling to try new things. Students need to ask themselves questions such as these: How did this start? What do I really want? What am I afraid of? As the issue becomes clearer, the conflict often simply becomes smaller. Even if it doesn't, careful thought helps both sides figure out a mutual solution. There will always be conflict in schools, but that doesn't mean there needs to be violence. After students in Atlanta started a conflict resolution program, according to Educators for Social Responsibility, "64 percent of the teachers reported less physical violence in the classroom; 75 percent of the teachers reported an increase in student cooperation and 92 percent of the students felt better about themselves". Learning to resolve conflicts can help students deal with friends, teachers, parents, bosses, and coworkers. In that way, conflict resolution is a basic life skill that should be taughtin schools across the country.21. They added up to two dollars and six and a quarter cents. The bill was paid, and the woman was entirely satisfied. But the young storekeeper, not feeling quite sure as to the accuracy of his calculations, added up the things again. To his surprise he found that it should have been but two dollars.“I’ve made her pay six and a quarter cents more, ”said Abe, disturbed. It was an unimportant thing, and many clerks would have forgotten it, but Abe was too conscientious for that.“The money must be paid back, ”he decided. At night, he closed the store, and walked to the home of his customer. He explained the matter, paid over the six and a quarter cents, and returned satisfied. Here is another story of young Lincoln's strict honesty. A woman entered the store and asked for half a pound of tea. The young clerk weighed it out. This was the last sale of the day.The next morning, when beginning his duties, Abe discovered a four ounce weight on the scales. It flashed upon him at once that he had used this in the sale of the previous night, and so, of course, given his customers short weight. I am afraid that there are many country merchants who would not have been much worried by this discovery. But Abe weighed out the balance of the half pound, shut up the store, and carried it to the defrauded customer. Ithink my young readers will begin to see that the name so often given, in later times to President Lincoln, of “Honest Old Abe,”was well deserved.A man who begins by strict honesty in his youth is not likely to change as he grows older, and mercantile honesty is some guarantee of political honesty.28.We know from the text that Abe ________.A.charged less for the woman B.tricked the woman on purpose C.was careful and responsible D.was confident of his calculations 29.From the underlined sentence, we can see that the author ________.
