Lesson 44 Through the forest
1. Mrs. Anne Sterling did not think of the risk she was taking when she ran through a forest after two men.
The risk she was taking——

冒风险的短语是take the risk或是run the risk. 的风险”则是take/run the risk of doing sth.比如:
I don’t want to run the risk of losing my job.

Run after——“在…

2. They had rushed up to her while she was having a picnic at the edge of a forest with her children and tried to steal her handbag.
He worked up to nine o'clock in the evening.

Have a picnic——
at the edge of表示“在……

比如:a knife with a sharp edge 有利刃的刀the edge of the table 桌子边
(1)have the edge on——比…
She has the edge on her classmates in English.

(2)be on edge——紧张(注意当中没有定冠词the。

如果是on the edge
I’ve been on edge ever since I got her letter.

(3)cutting edge——前沿
Cut

Edge

Shanghai has for several years been at the cutting edge of moves to make the Government more responsive.

3. In the struggle, the strap broke and, with the bag in their possession, both men started running through the trees.
Strap: n.
in one's possession,

也可以说in the possession of sb.。

The house used to be in my possession, but now it is in the possession of an old lady.

4. Mrs. Sterling got so angry that she ran after them.

5. She was soon out of breath, but she continued to run.
Out of breath:

Out of就是“用完、用尽”的意思,比如out of money那就是没钱了,out of work就是没工作了,out of sight就是看不见了等等。

breath n.
hold your breath 摒住呼吸
6. When she caught up with them, she saw that they had sat down and were going through the contents of the bag, so she ran straight at them.
Catch up with——赶上、追上
You go first, I’ll catch up with you later.

Catch your breath
Hang on a minute, let me catch my breath!
go through:翻看
She went through her bag, but she couldn't find her key.

7. The men got such a fright that they dropped the bag and ran away. Such…that结构。

Such后面跟的是一个名词a fright。

8. ‘The strap needs mending,’ said Mrs. Sterling later, ‘but they did not steal anything.’

The car needs washing.

Our clavichord is being repaired.

Repair a TV set
I’ll mend the shirt.

think of 想到…
take/run the risk of doing sth冒险干某事
up to 到…
have a picnic 去野餐
at the edge of 在…
in one’s possession
out of breath 上气不接下气catch up with 追上;赶上go through 检查;翻看run straight at 直接扑向get a fright 受惊。
