BACAB第四部分:阅读理解AThere are many idioms in English. An idiom is a phrase that we can't understand from the meaning of each word. The following are some of them.As the crow fliesWhen a bird flies from place to place, it takes the most direct route. But when people drive, they have to follow roads and often go farther. When people give a distance "as the crow flies", they mean the shortest distance between the two points, not the distance you would have to travel by following roads. As Dan and his mum drove along the river, they could see the beach on the opposite side, Dan asked "How far is it to the beach?""It's only about a quarter of a mile as the crow flies" his mother said.Blow hot and coldIn one of Aesop's Fables, a man blow on his fingers to warm them up and then blow on his soup to cool it down. In both cases, the man is opening his mouth, but what comes out is different. If a person says one thing and later says the opposite, we say that the person is blowing hot and cold."Is Felicia going to try out for the soccer team this year?" Stacy asked."I don't know," Tricia replied." Last week she was saying yes,but this week she's saying no. She's really blowing hot and cold."Break the iceNowadays people use the phrase to refer to ending an awkward silence by beginning a conversation. It was the first day of summer camp. The four girls began to make their beds in silence. None of the girls knew each other, and no one knew what to say. Finally, one of them broke the ice by saying" Hey, where's everybody from?"Bury the hatchetIn native American culture, when two nations agreed to end their war, they buried the hatchet. So to bury the hatchet is to make peace with someone else.Colin could not excuse his sister for breaking his tennis racket. Finally, his sister said,"Colin, can't we bury the hatchet?"56.What does "as the crow flies" mean?A. In the smoothest wayB. By planeC. In a straight lineD. At top speed.57."Blow hot and cold " can be used to talk about someone's ______.A. poor healthB. bad mannerC. communication skillsD. changing attitudes58. When the four girls were making their beds in silence, they probably felt _____.A. shyB. disappointedC. excitedD. Curious59. It can be inferred that Colin's sister hoped that Colin would ______.A. buy a new tennis racketB. forgive her mistakeC. stay away from herD. make an apology to her60. Which of the following is TRUE according to the text?A. It’s difficult to understand the meaning of an idiom by each word.B. What Felicia thought was different from what he saidC. Dan and his mother need drive a quarter of a mile to the beach.D. “Bury the hatchet” is an idiom from Aesop’s Fables.Keys:56-60. CDABABA couple from Miami, Bill and Simone Butler, spent sixty-six days in a life-raft(救生艇) in the seas of Central America after their boat sank.Twenty-one days after they left Panama in their boat, Simony, they met some whales(鲸鱼). “They started to hit the side of the boat,” said Bill, “and then suddenly we heard water.” Two minutes later, the boat was sinking. They jumped into the life-raft and watched the boat go under the water. For twenty days they had tins of food, biscuits, and bottles of water. They also had a fishing-line and a machine to make salt water into drinking water —two things which saved their lives. They caught eight to ten fish a day and ate them raw(生的). Then the line broke. “So we had no more fish until something very strange happened. Some sharks(鲨鱼) came to feed, and the fish under the raft were afraid and came to the surface.I caught them with my hands.”About twenty ships passed them, but no one saw them. After fifty days at sea their life-raft was beginning to break up. Then suddenly it was all over. A fishing boat saw them and picked them up. They couldn’t stand up. CBDBDC.Believe it or not, optical illusion(错觉) can cut highway crashes.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced automobile crashes on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion. But stripes, called chevrons(人字形), painted on the roads make drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are, and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C. is planning to repeat Japan's success. Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway crashes.Excessive (too great) speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all fatal traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will conduct its tests in areas where speed-related hazards (danger) are the greatest curves, exit slopes, traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal bars painted across roads can initially cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say, not only give drivers the impression that they are drivingfaster than they really are but also make a lane appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.66. The passage mainly discusses __________.A. a new way of highway speed controlB. a new method of training driveC. a new pattern for painting highwaysD. a new type of optical illusion67. On roads painted with chevrons, drivers tend to feel that ________.A. they should avoid speed-related dangers.B. they are driving in the wrong laneC. they should slow down their speedD. they are reaching the speed limit68. Compared to horizontal bars, the advantage of chevrons is that ________.A. it can keep drivers awakeB. it will have a longer effect on driversC. can cut road accidents in halfD. will look more attractive69.The American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety plans to________.A. try out the Japanese method in certain areasB. change the road signs across the countryC. replace straight, horizontal bars with chevronsD. repeat the Japanese road patterns70. What of the following is true about straight, horizontal bars painted across roads?A. They are suitable only on broad roads.B. They are falling out of use in the United States.C. They cannot be used successfully to traffic circles.D. They are ignored in a long period of time.Keys:66-70. ACBADDSherlock Holmes is considered by many people as the greatest detective in fictional literature. He is, in fact, more famous than his own creator, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. In the popular series of stories, Holmes is described as “tall and l ean, pope-smoking, always in his cape and speaks in a splendid manner”. Doyle gave Holmes’ address as 221-B BakerStreet, London, and to this day some visitors to London still go to Baker Street to search for 221-B. Of course, there never was really any su ch address. Holmes’ flat was supposed to be shared by the lovable, but sometimes clumsy Doctor Watson who went around with Holmes trying to solve crimes before Holmes did. Poor Dr Watson lost out to Holmes every time.Doyle gave Holmes a masterly skill of deduction---the ability to come up with interesting conclusion from the simplest clues found at the scene of a crime. Doyle said that the description of Holmes was modeled on one of his lecturers at Edinburgh University where he studied medicine. That man was Dr Joseph Bell. Sherlock Holmes first appeared in Doyle’s A Study in Scarlet published in 1887. Holmes was so loved by all that when his author killed him off in one of his stories, readers wrote in anger to complain. They refused to allow Holmes to die! Holmes was brou ght back to “life” and appeared in further stories. The stories of Sherlock Holmes have been reprinted many times ever since then. Today we can watch Holmes at work on cinema and television screens as well as on stage.71. All of these feelings are normal when you start at a new school. Most kids worry about fitting in at their new school. It’s common for a new kid to feel like an outsider for the first few weeks. Although you can be lonely, you can help yourself fit in by being friendly. Even if you are nervous, try to smile, say hello and ask questions. Here are two places where you might meet friends in a new school:● The classroom: Look around you; is there anyone who you can talk to? Do you take part in group activities in class? If so, try to join a new group every time.● Playground: Most schools offer many team sports. Try to join these sports. Some kids worry about their teachers when they start a new school. Even if the teachers are supportive, it can take some time to adjust to new rules or ways of teaching. If you don’t think you can speak to them at the moment, try writing a letter.Try to reach a compromise (和解). Perhaps you and your parents disagree on something. You can keep your disagreement and try your best to accept each other. Michael’s mother didn’t agree with him about buying a motorcycle. They argued over it. But they finally came to a compromise. The trouble is that they have no idea of how many stamps they have left. When they want to send something by post, it’s very annoying to find out that they have run out of stamps! Satellite (卫星) pictures show large wooded areas have been cleared from central Mexico. The forests are the winter home for millions of monarch butterflies (黑脉金斑蝶). The butterflies travel there each year to reproduce (繁殖).Each year, more than two hundred thousand people travel to Mexico to see the butterflies. From November to March, millions of butterflies can be seen in the trees and the sky. Mexican officials hope that by protecting the forests, they can increase the number of visitors. These satellite pictures show the Monarch Butterfly Biosphere Reserve. About four hundred forty-five hectares (公顷) have been cleared illegally (非法地) since 2004. Scientists say that, if the clearing continues, monarch butterflies will not use the reserve as their winter home. For thousands of years, the butterflies have been flying to the same forests. Their trip goes along Canada and the northeastern United States. It is about four thousand eight hundred kilometers. The insects fly about eighty kilometers a day. They reach central Mexico after about sixty days.No one is sure why the brightly-colored orange and black butterflies choose these forests. However, dark rooftops hold in more than eighty percent of the energy from sunlight. This is why there are white-and-light-colored buildings in many warm areas of the world.Researchers have estimated(评估) the effects that white roofs could have on the planet. Their study considers painting sixty-three percent of rooftops white in one hundred large cities in warm areas around the world. The scientists estimate this would have the same climate result as taking all cars in the world off the road for ten years. It would also save money on indoor air cooling costs.A writer has some ideas for families which are planning to travel on vacation by car. She writes that the most important thing on a road trip is planning. Try to find new and fun things to do as close to your home as possible. She created almost two hundred dance pieces. She is often called the Mother of Modem Dance.Earlier in her life, however, Martha did not know that she would become a dancer. At that time, the dancers were looked down on. So Martha’s parents didn’t approve of her desire to dance at the beginning. Until 1916, she began her studies at the newly created Denishawn School of Dancing and Related Arts, founded by Ruth St. Denis and Ted Shawn, where Graham worked very hard to improve her ability to dance because she was considered too old to begin dancing. In 1936, Gr aham made her defining work, “Chronicle”, which signaled the beginning of a new era(纪元) in modem dance. The dance brought serious issues to the stage for the general public in a dramatic manner. Influenced by the Wall Street Crash of 1929, the Great Depression that followed, and the Spanish Civil War, it focused on depression and isolation, reflected in the dark nature of both the set and costumes. Graham continued to dance past the age of seventy. Once again, she was met with criticism from people who came to watch her shows. But she didn’t give up. Her last completed ballet(芭蕾舞) was 1990’s Maple Leaf Rag. “A Dancer’s World” is an introduction to Graham and her work. She tells about her dances and her dance group shows some of their methods.Martha Graham received many awards during her lifetime, including the Presidential Medal of Freedom in nineteen seventy-six. She was the first dancer to receive the country’s highest civilian honor. She died in 1991 at the age of ninety- six.
