The integration of the three modules into the system design can improve the quality of computer-assisted translation.B.Functional DesignDictionary function: mainly including word search, word split and translation and example sentence search. The meaning of a word can often be derived from other words that are used in conjunction with it, of which the resulting translation is quick and easy and basically, the majority of words can be found. In actual machine-assisted translation, different machine dictionaries will make different translations for the same sentence.Reasonable use of online dictionary segmentation translation function is possible to a certain extent, reduce the intensity of translation and improve the speed and quality of translation. When a word has more meaning and usage, which is difficult to make a decision, we can query its use in different sentences through the support of some auxiliary tools with functions of word search and sentence search, so as to obtain the translation of the reference answer.Automatic translation function: mainly including the use of automatic translation of direct access to translation, access to "effective translation of information" and the advanced use of automatic translation. The author believes that the development can be called Smart CAT. The concept for the smart development of CAT can be divided into the following three aspects:First of all, to improve the combination with the translation theory. Theory is the basis of practice, computer-assisted translation technology and translation theory should be closely integrated. The combination of Computer-assisted translation and translation theory can choose selective operation, namely to establish a translation theory according to the classification of terminology, and make users to select the appropriate translation theory according to the source text before translation. The translation of literary works such as poetry can choose Xu Yuanchong's "three beauties" theory. Translation of non-literary works can choose Eugene Nida's dynamic functional equivalence theory, or choose literal translation and free translation, assimilation and alienation according to the situation and customer needs. To be simple, translation theory is the general standard for classification, and the branch under is classified according to the specific translation theory. At the same time, because the translation theory is developing dynamically and constantly improving, it should be directly attached to some of the translation methods as classification items. Then set the translation summary of various words, phrases, chapters under various classification items. Finally, identify the system through a specific program in translation practice and make accurate choice of the translation results. This will ensure the accuracy of translation in theory, so as to improve the quality of translation.Second, expand the source of the termbase. To achieve the accuracy of translation, we can also start from expanding the source of the term base. Term base is people’s automatic collection and summary of terms in translation practice, which determines that the size a person's term base depends on its translation workload and translation time. However, in today's society, full-time translators tend to turn to part-time translators, so it is difficult for a single translator to form a systematic, comprehensive term base. Thus, the existence of termbase can not simply rely on the translator and the expansion of the term base from the point to the surface is a wise move. Based on the protection and respect for individual labor outcomes, the realization of this change requires the help of a compensatory mechanism. It may be understood that a termbase smart user identification system may be added to the computer-assisted translation software. The termbase may be freely importable, but may only be exported in a particular form and a particular program. When the first translator and the computer-aided translation software development company reach an agreement, the first translator will share the term base he organized with the computer-aided translation software development company for consideration. Then the computer-assisted translation software development company shares the termbase with the second translator who is required by the term for consideration, but the term base can not be directly shared by the second translator to other translators except the first translator. In this way, the computer-aided translation software development company serves as a shared intermediary to assume the role of this termbase collection. In a sense, the computer-aided translation software development company is all translators’ term base, which provides resources to smart computer-assisted translation.Finally, simplify the operating procedures. Modelling to contain pandemicsAgent-based computational models can capture irrational behaviour, complex social networks and global scale — all essential in confronting H1N1, says Joshua M. Epstein .A s the world braces for an autumn wave of swine flu (H1N1), the relatively new technique of agent-based computational modelling is playing a central part in mapping the disease’s possible spread, and designing policies for its mitigation.Classical epidemic modelling, which began in the 1920s, was built on differential equa-tions. These models assume that the popula-tion is perfectly mixed, with people movingfrom the susceptible pool,to the infected one, to therecovered (or dead) one.Within these pools, every-one is identical, and no oneadapts their behaviour. A tri-umph of parsimony, this approachrevealed the threshold nature of epidem-ics and explained ‘herd immunity’, wherethe immunity of a subpopulation can stifleoutbreaks, protecting the entire herd.But such models are ill-suited to captur-ing complex social networks and the direct contacts between individuals, who adapt theirbehaviours — perhaps irrationally — based on disease prevalence. Agent-based models (ABMs) embrace this complexity. ABMs are artificial societies: every single person (or ‘agent’) is represented as a dis-tinct software individual. The computer model tracks each agent, ‘her’ contacts and her health status as she moves about virtual space — travel-ling to and from work, for instance. The models can be run thousands of times to build a robust statistical portrait comparable to epidemic data. ABMs can record exact chains of transmission from one individual to another. Perhaps most importantly, agents can be made to behave something like real people: prone to error, bias, fear and other foibles. Such behaviours can have a huge effect on disease progres-sion. What if significant num-bers of Americans refuse H1N1 vaccine out of fear? Surveys and historical experience indicate that this is entirely possible, as is substantial absenteeism among health-care workers. Fear itself can be contagious. In 1994, hundreds of thousands of people fled the Indian city of Surat to escape pneumonic plague, although by World Health Organization criteria no cases were con-firmed. The principal challenge for agent mod-elling is to represent such behavioural factors appropriately; the capacity to do so is improv-ing through survey research, cognitive science,and quantitative historical study.Robert Axtell and I published a full agent-based epidemic model 1 in 1996. Agents withdiverse digital immune systems roamed a land-scape, spreading disease. The model trackeddynamic epidemic networks, simple mecha-nisms of immune learning, and behaviouralchanges resulting from disease progression, allof which fed back to affect epidemic dynamics.However, the model was small (a few thousandagents) and behaviourally primitive.Now, the cutting edge in performance is theGlobal-Scale Agent Model (GSAM)2, developedby Jon Parker at the Brookings Institution’sCenter on Social and Economic Dynamics inWashington DC, which I direct. This includes6.5 billion distinct agents, with movementand day-to-day local interactions modelled asavailable data allow. The epidemic plays outon a planetary map, colour-coded for the dis-ease state of people in differentregions — black for suscepti-ble, red for infected, and bluefor dead or recovered. The map pictured shows the state ofaffairs 4.5 months into a simu-lated pandemic beginning inTokyo, based on a plausible H1N1 variant.For the United States, the GSAM contains 300million cyber-people and every hospital andstaffed bed in the country. The National Centerfor the Study of Preparedness and CatastrophicEvent Response at Johns Hopkins University inBaltimore is using the model to optimize emer-gency surge capacity in a pandemic, supportedby the Department of Homeland Security.Models, however, are not crystal ballsand the simulation shown here is not a pre-diction. It is a ‘base case’ which by design is highly unrealistic, ignoring pharmaceuticals, quarantines, school closures and behavioural adaptations. It is nonetheless essential because, base case in hand, we can rerun the model to investigate the questions that health agencies face. What is the best way to allocate limited supplies of vaccine or antiviral drugs? How effective are school or work closures? Agent-based models helped to shape avian flu (H5N1) policy, through the efforts of the National Institutes of Health’s Models of Infectious Disease Agent Study (MIDAS) — a research network to which the Brookings Institution belongs. The GSAM was recently presented to officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta, Georgia, and other agencies, and will be inte-gral to MIDAS consulting on H1N1 and other emerging infectious diseases. In the wake of the 11 September terrorist attacks and anthrax attacks in 2001, ABMs played a similar part in designing containment strategies for smallpox. These policy exercises highlight another important feature of agent models. Because they are rule-based, user-friendly and highly visual, they are natural tools for participatory modelling by teams — clinicians, public-health experts and modellers. The GSAM executes an entire US run in around ten minutes, fast enough for epidemic ‘war games’, giving deci-sion-makers quick feedback on how interven-tions may play out. This speed may even permit the real-time streaming of surveillance data for disease tracking, akin to hurricane tracking. As H1N1 progresses, and new health challenges emerge, such agent-based modelling efforts will become increasingly important. ■Joshua M. This innovative method was found to facilitate hole making in AISI D2tool steel in its hardened state,resulting in an enhancement in cutting tool life and the ability to machine H7quality holes with a surface finish of0.3μm Ra[1].The operation has also been applied to hole making in composite-metal compounds as a substitute for drilling operations.The impact of the axial and tangential feed per tooth on the process forces[2]has been investigated. Employing helical milling to aluminium with minimum quantity lubrication has shown an improvement in geometri-cal accuracy and a reduction in burr formation,lower cutting temperature and a smaller cutting force compared to drilling operations[3].The prediction of cutting force through modelling and simulation is an important research area in order to improve process ling is the most complex machining operation.Previously in the literature,machining mechanisms have been derived from a general model[4,5]and applied to the specific application,for example,five-axis milling, three-axis milling,peripheral milling,face milling and plunge milling.Modelling peripheral milling is a fundamental requirement in order to model more complex milling operations.A theoretical model based on the oblique cutting principle and cutting force coefficients has been developed in order to predict the cutting forces during peripheral milling[6–8].Considering the helical flute(or side cutting edge)of the milling cutters,an attempt to accurately simulate milling forces including the effects of engaged flute length and the number of engaged flutes caused by the radial and axial depths of cut has been previously presented[9].A common approach to facilitate the modelling of this complex situation including the milling tool geometry and the interaction with the workpiece involves analysing the cutting forces on axial discrete milling tools,then integrating these force elements.The intersection of the tool path swept envelope with the workpiece Z-buffer elements has been used to find the contact area between the cutter and the workpiece. An axial slice cutting tool discrete mechanistic model was used to estimate the cutting force vectors[10].Cutter entry and exit angles,along with the immersion angles,were used as boundary conditions in order to predict cutting forces when flank milling ruled surfaces with tapered,helical and ball end mills[11].The effect of lead and tilt angles between the cutter and the workpiece on the milling forces,tool deflections and form errors during multi-axis end milling have been analysed[12,13].During modelling of the cutting forces and system dynamics,one of the outstanding characteristics is that both side cutting edges and end cutting edges interact with the workpiece during helical milling processing.An accurate predictive model should describe and sum up the mechanics on both edges simultaneously.Ball end milling tools are most often used in three-axis or five-axis milling.Ball end milling tool processing models have been separated into ball end and cylindrical sections in order to obtain accurate prediction[10,14,15].A mechanistic force model describing the cutting force as a sum of the cutting and edge forces has been developed for a general end milling cutter(cylindrical,taper,ball,bull nose)with the specific cutting and edge force coefficients identified[16].As one type of three-axis milling operation,axial feed is a typical characteristic of helical milling operations. This operation uses a flat end mill not a ball end mill that is used in typical3-axis and5-axis milling situations.Axial feed using a flat end mill is also applied in plunge milling which is a two-axis operation.Considering rigid body motion of the cutter,the cutting force model and dynamics model for the plunge milling process in the time domain have been established[17,18].The cutting forces associated with plunge milling operations are predicted by considering the feed,radial engagement,tool geometry,spindle speed and the regenera-tion of the chip load due to vibrations[19].Considering the flexibility of the workpiece,tool setting errors and tool kine-matics and geometry,a horizontal approach was used to compute the chip area including the contribution of the main and side edge in the cutting zone[20].Drilling operations and boring operations typically involve axial feed.Both these operations are similar to helical milling and plunge milling operations but with different cutting tools.The drilling cutting forces and dynamics have been integrated into the model in order to obtain drilled hole profiles[21].A mechanistic model for predicting thrust force and torque during the drilling process using a drill tool with double-point angle edges [22].To predict temperatures and forces on both the drilling and ball end milling operations,the cutting edges of the twist drill lip and the ball end mill were divided into oblique cutting elements[23].A theoretical model to predict thrust and torque in high-speed drilling has been presented[24,25].The methodology for extracting cutting force coefficients for drilling operations has also been investigated[26].When modelling the drilling process, the axial feed effect was not considered explicitly because the lip of the twist drill has a taper angle(point angle),and the interaction between the lip and workpiece caused by spindle rotation could lead to a spontaneous axial force(thrust).In the literature,helical milling has been introduced as an enabling technology to substitute for drilling operations [1–3].In recent years,research on modelling the mechanics of the helical milling process has been published [27,28].Although both the side cutting edges and the end cutting edges have been considered to participate in the machining process,the detail interaction between the end cutting edges and workpiece still needs more elaborate investigation and description.Modelling,simulation and experimental investigation during cutting forces of the helical milling operation will be discussed in this paper including the influence of helical feed.This research aims to develop an analytical cutting force model in the time domain including both the axial cutting depth and the radial cutting depth associated with helical milling operations.The model considers the effects of both the tangential feed and axial feed,and the combination of both mechanics on the side cutting edges and the end cutting edges.2Kinematics of helical millingIn helical milling,the trajectory of a point on the milling toolcutting edge is the result of the spiral curve movement of the axis of the tool (reference frame)and the circular movement of the edge point relative to the axis (relative motion).Two sets of coordinates are defined to describe the motion of the cutter and the cutting force on the cutter;an X,Y ,Z global coordinate frame fixed to the workpiece and an x,y,z local coordinate frame fixed to the cutting tool with the origin at the centre of the end flat surface which defines the reference frame.A description of helical milling with tool feed using helical trajectory and the coordinate settings are depicted inFig.1.The feed motion of the tool is decomposed into two of cutting edges:the side cutting edge (peripheral cutting edge)and the end cutting edge through the centre.The interaction characteristics of these two types with the workpiece are different.The side edges participate in the peripheral cutting component,while the end edges participate in the plunge cutting component.Therefore,these two movements will be initially analysed separately before being assembled or composed.The side edge cutting process is typical intermittent cutting.The undeformed chip geometry,width,depth,and thickness have been described in the literature [2].The side edge forcesThe influence of cutter feed movement on the cutting forces during machining processing is almost always neglected.Similar to spindle rotation resulting in the relative movement between cutter and workpiece,cutter feed motion leads to relative movement also.This relative movement between the cutter and workpiece could influence the directionand magnitude of the cutting forces.The premise that the influence of the feed can be neglected is based on the assumption that the relative displacement and velocity from spindle rotation are much larger than the feed.Thus,in most situations,the influence of feed is insignificant and can be ignored.However,when modelling some specific machining operations including axial feed,such as drilling,plunge milling and helical milling,to ignore the feed motion is unreasonable.If the axial feed effect is not considered,the cutting force along the axial direction might not be expressed accurately.For this reason,analysis of the influence of axial feed on cutting forces when modelling helical milling operations is necessary.In this paper,the feed motion effect on cutting forces has been analysed completely.Firstly,the movement of an arbitrary point P at the side cutting edge could be decomposed to cylinder helical move-ment (reference movement)and circular movement perpen-dicular to the cutter axis,as depicted in Fig.1.The reference model during helical milling operationsin the time domain has therefore been established analyti-cally.This model defines both the cutting force on the side cutting edge and on the end cutting edge,incorporating the interactions between the cutter and the workpiece on the effect of the spindle rotation and the helical feed.4Simulations and experimental resultsCutting forces during helical milling have been simulated on the MATLAB platform using the models presented previ-ously,and experiments have been performed to compare with the model predictions.The process parameters includ-ed the workpiece material,cutting conditions,tool material and geometry.The Ti6Al4V alloy was cast and then HIPed (hot isostatic pressing,HIP)at a pressure of 100–140MPa at 920°C for 2.5h;then,the casting was rough milled to the end geometry (160×160×20mm)with a hole in a diameter of 60mm in the centre of the plate as shown in Fig.1.There were two types of cutting tools,the M.A.Ford 20-mm five-flute carbide end mill (17878703A)and the M.A.Ford 16-mm five-flute carbide end mill (17862903A).Experiments were carried out on a five-axis high-speed Mikron UCP-710CNC machining centre.A three-axis piezo-electric Kistler 9265B type dynamometer was set up on the fixture with the workpiece.The accessory data ac-quisition system of the dynamometer consisted of a Kistler 5019A type multi-channel charge amplifier and signal pro-cessing software DynoWare.Before commencing the experiments,the dynamometer was calibrated using static loads.The simulated cutting forces in an entire milling tool revolution on the side edges,end edges and whole cutter during the typical cutting conditions are depicted in Fig.8.In this simulation,the up milling and large radial cutting depth are considered as the significant characteristics of the operation.Figure 8a shows the simulated cutting forces that acted on first side cutting edge,second side cutting edge and cutting forces that acted on the milling tool from both the five cutting edges,respectively.For the up milling condi-tion,the j th edge engages with the workpiece,and the (j -1)th edge engages following.The large radial cutting depth means that before the previous cutting edge has completed cutting,the next cutting edge has engaged the workpiece.Therefore,there is a period of time that forces overlap between the consecutive cutting edges.Figure 8b shows thesimulated cutting forces that acted on the end cutting edges.There are similar cutting forces superposing between consec-utive side cutting edges.However,the sum of the X ,Y direc-tion forces are nearly zero,that is one of the important features of helical milling and plunge milling operations.Figure 8c shows the cutting forces that acted on the milling tool.These results are the integration of the component forces from Fig.8a and b .The simulated and experimental cutting force results are compared in Fig.9.In this case,cutting tools travel along an entire helical curve and machine an entire helical milling period.The X ,Y ,Z coordinates are fixed to the workpiece,during the helical feed motion of the tool,the amplitude of F X and F Y change with time following a sine relationship.The amplitude of Fig.9a and b counter profile is the maximum result of F X and F Y .Figure 9c and d shows the experimental and simulated cutting forces in detail in a single tooth period.The comparison result from experiment and simulation are shown in Table 1.This figure depicts the simulation results to an accuracy of about 10%in these selected indicators.The maximum value of F X ,F Y and F Z indicates for a single tooth period for both simulation and experimental results shown.The maximum of ffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiffiF 2X þF 2Yp indicates the amplitude of force of F X and F Y during helical milling.The errors probably result from cutting tool deflection and cutting tool wear.5ConclusionIn this paper,cutting forces during helical milling operations have been modelled in the time domain.The cutting forces both on the side cutting edges and on the end cutting edges along the helical feed path have been modelled by considering the tangential and the axial motion of the tool.The cutting force model can be used to predict cutting forces both on the side cutting edges and the end cutting edges.The model can also predict forces on the whole helix milling tool considering the process parameters and tool geometry.The experimental results show that for the given helix milling operation param-eters,the result of The development of these tools is itself a significant software engineering task, requiring a considerable investment of time and resources. There are a large number of different kinds of automated software engineering tools, variously known as CASE, CAME, IPSE, SEE, and metaCASE tools. Although these tools differ in the particular methods, activities, and phases of the software development cycle to which they are applied, constructors of these tools often face similar implementation issues. Decisions about host computing platform, implementation language, conformance with standards and reference models, choice of repository, integration and interoperability mechanisms, and user interface style have to be made. This mini-track is based around the experience reports of researchers and practitioners actively involved in software engineering tool development.1. Background and motivationThe purpose of this mini-track is to bring together a community of software engineering practitioners and researchers who have an interest in developing software engineering tools. The mini-track should be of interest to anyone concerned with:•tool construction technologies and techniques;•development and application of new tools;•evaluation of tools.By software engineering tool we mean any software tool that provides some automated support for the software engineering process [1]. This is quite an encompassing definition that covers a number of levels of automated tool support, including:•support for development activities, including specification, design, implementation, testing, andmaintenance;•support for process modeling and management;•meta-tool technology, such as metaCASE products, used for the generation of custom tools to supportparticular activities or processes.Within each level of support, we can find differing breadths of support [2]:•individual tools that support one particular task;•workbenches, or toolsets, that support a number of related tasks;•environments that support the whole, or at least a large part, of the development process.These definitions include many different kinds of software engineering tool variously known as CASE (Computer Aided Software Engineering), CAME (Computer Aided Method Engineering), IPSE (Integrated Project Support Environment), SEE (Software Engineering Environment), metaCASE, CSCW (Computer Supported Cooperative Work), and Workflow Management Systems.The mini-track focuses on practical issues of the design, implementation, and operation of these tools, with the intention of sharing experiences and exchanging ideas so that our future tool development activities will be more productive and the tools more useful. The authors in this mini-track report on tool development covering a wide range of topics including metaCASE approaches, component based technologies, process modelling, repository organisation, distribution and configuration, data interchange, HCI/GUI, and cognitive and social aspects of tool development. Given this range of topics, it is hard to classify each paper into a single topic area. What follows below is a short overview of each paper anda brief description of the topics addressed.2. Papers and topicsUnderstanding the cognitive processes involved in software development, and codifying knowledge about the software artifacts produced in this process, is an important and challenging undertaking. Encoding the experiences of software developers through the use of design patterns [3] is a topic explored in the paper by Reiss. The author presents a novel pattern language, and he describes thePEKOE tool for assisting the identification, classification, creation, and maintenance of design patterns. The tool allows programmers to work with both design patterns and code simultaneously. Patterns can be saved in a library that accompanies the PEKOE system, and the patterns can be verified, maintained as the source evolves, and edited to modify the source.Software engineering tools collect and store valuable amounts of information of various types including software designs, process management information, and meta-model data. To assist engineers in collaborative development work, these tools need to inter-operate and exchange information. Various classification schemes [4], reference models [5], and standards [6][7][8] have been proposed to tackle the problems of interoperability and data interchange. The paper by St-Denis, Keller, and Schauer examines the topic of data interchange in the context of a design recovery environment known as SPOOL. The authors describe the difficulties involved in model interchange and they evaluate a number of solutions to this problem. There is currently a lot of interest in this topic by standards organisations, and the new XMI format [9] looks like a very promising interchange format that may become widely adopted.With the increasing popularity of distributed systems, there is demand for software engineering tools that support software engineering in a distributed manner, across a wide area, and possibly over heterogeneous networks [10]. Lehto and Marttiin examine the topic of collaborative working and the development of groupware tools to support this kind of activity. The authors describe theories of collaborative working, and they report their experiences with the with the Timbuktu system for supporting collaborative design.The use of meta-tool technology is an important topic in software engineering tool development. The objective is to (re)build tools and tool components in a rapid manner and at the highest possible level of description. This topic is addressed in the paper by Kahn et al. The authors explore the generation of implementations of tool components, such as interchange formats, database schemas, and application program interfaces, from high level, implementation independent specifications. This work is focused on tools, based on the ISO STEP/EXPRESS standards [7] [8], for supporting major product manufacturing domains. The authors describe a transformation system, known as STEPWISE, for manipulating specifications written in EXPRESS, and they provide example transforms to illustrate this behaviour.The manipulation of graphical representations of software artifacts is an important topic in software engineering tool development. The generation of new, customised, graphical modeling tools, tailored to domain-specific notational conventions, is the theme of the paper by Sapia et al. The authors describe their generic modeling tool, known as GraMMi, and they explain how it can be configured at run time to different notations by reading specifications of the desired graphical notation from a metadata repository. The incorporation of a four layer metadata framework, a layered system architecture, and a model-view-controler (MVC) user interface [11] are features of GraMMi that tool developers will find particularly relevant and interesting.The generation of tools from high level specifications and the manipulation of visual representations of software are topics addressed in the paper by Mernik et al. The authors describe the LISA system, in which, formal language specifications [12] are used to generate language specific program development environments. This work addresses several important software engineering issues including: incremental development of new programming languages; software development using visual design languages; and the portability of the generation system and its tools across different computing platforms.3. The European Cooperation for Space Standardization has developed a number of standards recommending computer modeling technology for support of all the stages of space projects’ realization. [1]. There are simulation models created for different design and production tasks, that provide the necessary characteristics and properties of the space systems. In order to provide construction and usage of complex multi-component simulation models describing the specifics of function of software-hardware systems, it is necessary to increase integrability of the modelsin complex solutions. In this regard, a topical direction of research is creation of the libraries of reusable models and of their shared use technologies, independently from the software tools applied for their building. [2]. The main principles providing integrability of different manufacturers’ models are set by the international Simulation Model Portability (SMP) standard [3, 4]. The standard determines universal approaches to organization of the simulation systems for simulation models building and their transferability in the modeling environments and operation systems.In this article we present the product of our research in creation of an original technology for building of a space systems’ onboard equipment simulation problem-oriented infrastructure, based on the Simulation Model Portability standard. The technology adds the standard’s architectural and functional requirements to software with the original methods of information-graphical and intellectual modeling [5, 6]. The standard sets the general principles of model interface description and regulates functionality of the software modules constituting the core of the modeling infrastructure. However, it doesn’t solve a number of problems concerning construction, modeling, integration and interaction of the models, and they are solved by software designers individually. Presently, there is a number of simulation infrastructure designs. The biggest and most significant ones are: SimTG – Astrium Satellites [7], SimSAT – European Space Agency [8], the European mission control center simulator SWARMSIM [9]. Each of the projects is based on the standard, but has different technological approaches in simulation and experiment conduction. The introduced functional additions are aimed at optimal task solution, determined by the purposes of the infrastructure building. We suggest technological and software approaches that allow not only to provide usage of models in different projects and in different programm, but also to consider the specifics of the task under solution. Information-graphical modeling allows to set the system’s structure in a graphical form, visualize model’s behavior during simulation and the events appearing in it related to the onboard systems’ interaction: command transmission, telemetry generation and analysis. The intellectual modeling method allows in an interactive mode to create model rules describing the onboard systems’ interaction logics in terms of the subject area. The ability to set the function logics in form of rules allows the constructor to easily build and then modify a simulation model without using programming skills. The technology of simulation infrastructure construction that integrates information-graphical, intellectual and simulation methods and meets the requirements SMP, is an original and promising one for such task solution.II.T HE TASKS OF THE O NBOARD E QUIPMENT S IMULATIONINFRASTRUCTUREThe functions of our simulation infrastructure are determined by the basic tasks of the space systems’ onboard equipment design. The software tasks include support of the design and analysis of the designer solutions at different stages of production lifecycle. TASKS OF THE ONBOARD EQUIPMENT SIMULATIONINFRASTRUCTUREA complex model design is performed on the basis of the analysis of the purpose and tasks that need be solved by this simulation model. The structure of the modeled onboard system is built, and its subsystems and their functional dependencies are defined. An onboard equipment designer must be able to build space systems’ functional models using the existing models of different manufacturers or creating his own ones in a special environment not requiring additional programming skills from him. The infrastructure provides a rule editor allowing to create model’s elements’ functions and the logics of their interaction in an interactive mode. This functions will let a specialist to easily build and then modify a simulation model without programming. The rules are clear, thus letting a constructor understand the models, both his own and the ones created by the other specialists, and to see the modeled system in whole. The examples of the space equipment intellectual modeling methods are described in literature [10], but such research does not satisfy the principles of transferability provided by the SMP standard, and they cannot be used in simulation infrastructures. We have developed our own technology of simulation models’ integration, including those built on the no-rule basis, and those created in accordance with the SMP standard. The technology allows to build complex models of big systems by uniting the models on the basis of the rules and the SMP models in a one complex model with support their modification. Different realizations of the models are transformed into a unified form by means of the information-graphical modeling tools, and this allows to use the same approaches and software tools for simulation tests preparation and execution, as well as for visualization and analysis of the results of the modeling.III. S IMULATION M ODELING I NFRASTRUCTURER EALIZATIONAt the moment the simulation infrastructure is under realization. We are developing the simulation core, graphical modeling tools, editors of models, rules and scenarios. The simulation modeling core includes the mechanisms defined by the SMP standard: Time Keeper, Scheduler, Logger, Event Manager Link Registry, Resolver. The infrastructure includes a subsystem of integration that makes automated interpretation of the models, adding it the graphical structures and mechanisms necessary for the joint work of the models. The modeling core initiates execution of the SMP models and carry out logical inference on the basis of the rules. It allows to manage the speed and the process of the simulation experiment. Its functions include gathering of information about the model’sperformance during simulation tests, control of the order of messaging between the model’s elements and change of the model’s condition. The modeling core contains the functions of visualization and saving of the results of modeling, allow to further retrospective analysis of the simulation results. Each of the software subsystems is a special tool providing advanced features for task solution.High level of the problem orientation in the simulation infrastructure is provided due to model design graphical tools and the rule editor. An example of model element’s graphical presentation and knowledge base is given in Figure 2.FIGURE II. GRAPHICAL MODELING TOOLS AND RULE EDITORThe program windows with the model parameters are shown in Figure 3. The tools allow a designer to use familiar semantic constructions to build onboard equipment models of work. The methods are set in form of condition-action rules. Our special tools for knowledge base creation allow to describe different variants of the modeled objects’ behavior. These tools were tested earlier, they were used to build function models of spacecraft command-and-measuring system’s onboard equipment [11]. Their implementation in the simulation infrastructure will extend the abilities to build models and provide their transferability and integrability in complex solutions.FIGURE III. MODEL PARAMETERSFigure 4 (at the end of the article) shows the view of the main window of the of infrastructure’s for the simulation of spacecraft onboard equipment functions. The navigation tools for the models, scenarios and the results of modeling allow to easily choose, perform and view the ready model solutions. The linkage of the models, scenarios and the results supported by the software, is an end-to-end technology of modeling and analysis of the spacecraft onboard equipment functions.IV.C ONCLUSIONThe technology for build of problem-oriented simulation infrastructure , based on the Simulation Model Portability standard, and it realization allow to build different models of space systems’ onboard equipment. Our software includes all the necessary components for simulation models’ integrability and transferability support. The software subsystems’ structure is added with the original tools of graphic and intellectual modeling that provide creation, conservation and replication of the onboard equipment constructors’ unique experience. For this purpose,several reusable hardware interfaces and measurement algorithms were developed,including the control of FireWire cameras as intensity detectors,a framework for controlling motor stages,and USB-controlled piezo-driven device for phase-shifting.1IntroductionThe control of experimental setups is often done indi-vidually in a variety of technologies or with expensive commercial software.This increases research costs and causes multiple implementations of similar tasks.The OptSuite1project aims to bundle common tasks aris-ing from measurement applications in optical laborato-ries and to provide a framework that can be easily ex-tended by users or programmers.Unlike commercial software,OptSuite is published as free software and un-der an Open Source license.It is written in the Java pro-gramming language,which has recently attracted a huge community and for which many libraries are freely avail-able.OptSuite’s focus of development has been on its general adaptability to different applications and on col-laboration and sharing of its extensions.2Application FrameworkThe OptSuite platform is based on the Eclipse RCP2that provides a free application development framework.Al-though Eclipse is based on native libraries and adapts to the appearance and behavior of the underlying operating system,it is available for most common systems such as Windows,Linux or Mac.Besides basic UI components, like windows,buttons or tables,Eclipse provides a pow-erful plug-in architecture.An Eclipse plug-in consists of its Java classes usually packed into a jarfile and a descriptor(plugin.xml and MANIFEST.MF).The descriptor defines a plug-in’s in-terconnections with others.Plug-ins can set dependen-cies on other plug-ins in order to access their exported classes.By providing an extension-point,a plug-in can declare an interface with which other plug-in’s can inter-act,or extend the functionality provided by the declaring plug-in.The other plug-ins can access this functionality by declaring extensions to these points.Furthermore,Eclipse plug-ins can be bundled into fea-tures that are used by Eclipse’s update mechanism. They can be individually installed and updated from a remote update-site.OptSuite is integrated into the Eclipse framework and defines extension-points specific to optical measure-ment.The next sections briefly describe the most im-portant extension-points of OptSuite and their concepts. 3Extension ConceptsOptSuite manages the different measurement tasks as so called measurement-routines.These routines con-sist of an arbitrary list of routine-steps and can be grouped into routine-sequences.One can consider a routine as the workflow of a real measurement setup that in most cases can be divided into three major parts: data-acquisition,data-analysis and data-visualization. All parts can be modeled as routine-steps,in which Opt-Suite provides special extension-points for common ap-plications.One example is the measurement-tool con-cept of OptSuite.Measurement-tools are brought in by OptSuite plug-ins and provide access to hardware tools such as light sources,detectors or motor stages.The tools are made available to routine-steps upon data-acquisition.For data-analysis,OptSuite simply passes the previously acquired data to registered data-analyzers,which then can either read the data for statistical or qualificatory purposes or directly manipulate it.Analyzers can add their results to so-called OptSuite reports.Reports have two aspects.One is the graphical result-presentation to the user and the second is the storage of these results. Here again a framework was developed and can be ex-tended to support specialized UI representation or cus-tom storage formats for the further use in external appli-cations.Similar to the report framework,the extension-point“ioFilter”enables the registration offilters to storeFig.1:OptSuite’s architecture,which is based on the Eclipse RCP and provides extension-points to extenders of the platform.the raw and analyzed measurement data to differentfile formats.Currently it supports the storage into binary and text format developed at IMTEK(*.opa,*.opb),CODE-V (*.int)and PGM format.Data visualization is also done by special routine-steps. OptSuite incorporates plotting components in Java SWT technology that can be used to plot one-and two-dimensional data.These standard components,how-ever,are again part of a framework in which OptSuite allows different plotting engines to visualize its data.In addition to its build-in routine-steps or those provided by other plug-in developers,OptSuite allows its users to extend and customize the behavior of the application by so-called scripted routine-steps.These steps will exe-cute a user-defined script written in either JavaScript or Matlab-script.Like Java routine-steps,the scripts have access to measurement-tools and the previously ac-quired data.4Available ExtensionsOptSuite and its current extensions for phase-shifting interferometry(PSI)3and optical coherence tomogra-phy(OCT)provide features unique to these applications, but their development brought up several measurement-tools and routine-steps that can be used for general measurement or interferometrical applications.A very abstract andflexible measurement-tool is the GPIB4interface,which provides a connection to GPIB devices and allows the execution of GPIB commands and queries.Together with a JavaScript routine-step,this can be used for a quick implementation of a device con-trol.For positioning tasks,OptSuite provides a frame-work for the control of motor stages.Currently this can be used with the OWIS PCI card for linear stages.Interferometry requires two-dimensional intensity de-tection that is modelled in OptSuites intensity-detector framework.Its standard extension can be used with digital cameras compliant to the IEEE1394standard (FireWire).For data pre-processing,OptSuite includes a framework to mask the measurement data and mark its data points with attributes.Additionally,a graphical editor was devel-oped to create masking areas for the acquired data.Specialities of PSI are control of the reference phase-shift and unwrapping of the2π-wrapped data that re-sults from calculating the test phase data.Phase shift-ing is accomplished with a piezo transducer(P-239.00, Physik Instrumente).It is controlled via the USB-Port us-ing an I/O controller(IO-warrior40,Code Mercenaries) and D/A converter(MX7248,Maxim)to transform the USB output signal to the desired input signal of a high-voltage amplifier connected to the piezo transducer.For phase unwrapping,the Goldstein unwrapping algorithm was implemented in Java.OptSuite’s OCT extensions use the GPIB interface for data-acquisition and provide functions for the signal pro-cessing of OCT measurement data.5ConclusionOptSuite provides aflexible framework for optical and general measurements.By publishing its source code, we are making it available to an interested optical com-munity.With a growing number of routines and tools, OptSuite can shorten development time and limit dupli-cate implementations.We invite all interested parties to use OptSuite and to actively contribute to the project. The 73 keys in the K eyboard section correspond to the keys of a MIDI keyboard and their MIDI notes starting from E0 on the left to E6 on the right. You can play Velvet by clicking the on-screen keys, using MIDI input froma MIDI keyboard, or from MIDI data in an Instrument or MIDI track in your software.1.Model Selector – Velvet contains five different vintage electric piano models. Click theModel Selector and select a piano model from the pop-up menu.Note: Loading a piano model may take several seconds. During the loading process, Velvet and your software may temporarily become unresponsive.2.Master Volume – The Volume knob on the Piano Front Panel controls Velvet’s mainoutput to your audio software.3.Tremolo Controls – Tremolo is a rhythmic variation in amplitude—a common effect thatwas built into many vintage electric pianos. Enabling its stereo mode applies a periodic variation of position in the stereo field. Velvet provides Tremolo effects for all models by reproducing the circuits of the Fender Rhodes Suitcase and the Wurlitzer A200.•On/Off: Enables the Tremolo effect.•Mono/Stereo: Enables Mono or Stereo Tremolo mode.•Rate: Adjusts the speed of the Tremolo effect.•Depth: Adjusts the amount of Tremolo applied to the sound.4.Save/Load Section – This section lets you load and save sounds.•Loading Sounds: To load a sound, click the screen to bring up a categorized list of Velvet sound patches. You can also use the arrow buttons to the right of the patchname to quickly shift between sounds.•Saving Sounds: To save a sound, click the Save button. If you wish to quickly overwrite the file you are currently working on without changing the file name orbringing up the file browser, you can do so by shift-clicking the Save button.5.Keyboard Extension Switch – The electric pianos in Velvet have the same key range asthe original models (A0–C6 for the A200, E0–E6 for the others) to guarantee authenticity.The K ey Extension switch lets you to play notes outside this range. To do this, set the switch to the Up position.6.Configuration – This button brings up a page containing several global parametersaffecting the operation of Velvet. This is described in detail in the Configuration Page section of this manual.Setup SectionThe Setup section provides controls for adjusting Velvet’s basic setup and playing behavior—including adjustment of the Pickup level, mechanical noises, and Key release. You can also set the amount of waveform data loaded into RAM and adjust Velvet’s dynamic response.1.Pickup Level – The Pickup Level control adjusts the volume of the line signal captured bythe instrument's pickups. Usually, a vintage electric piano is recorded by connecting the instrument’s line out directly to an amp or mixer. The Pickup level control adjusts the amount of this signal. Turn the Pickup Level control to the right to increase the line signal’s volume.2.Mechanics – The Mechanics controls adjust the type and amount of mechanical noisesthat occur when playing an electric piano (i.e., the sound of keys being pressed, as heard by the player). These sounds are not captured by the Pickups. Velvet is the first virtual electric piano that lets you add original mechanical noise to the sound for increased realism. There are three Mechanics modes:•Off: Disables mechanical noises.•On: Enables mechanical noises. Turning the Mechanics knob clockwise increases the amount of mechanical noises.•Open: Enables mechanical noise, modelling the sound of an electric piano with the lid removed. Again, turning the Mechanics knob clockwise increases the amount ofmechanical noise.Tip: If you set the Mechanics control to On, and turn the Pickup Level control all the way down, you will hear the sound of a switched-off vintage electric piano.3.Key Off – The Key Off controls adjust the type of noise that occurs when releasing keysand the associated knob sets the volume of the noise. There are three Key Off modes:•Off Disables key release noise.•On Enables key release noise.•Stacc (Staccato) Enables key release noise with a special behavior when short notes are played. Playing staccato notes on a real electric piano keeps the dampersfrom cutting off the note as quickly as normal, resulting in a different release sound.4.Condition – This knob has the effect of increasing the “age” of the piano model. Turningthe knob clockwise introduces increasing note-to-note deviations in tuning and dynamic response, simulating an old electric piano in need of service.5.Mem (Memory Selector) – Use this control to adjust the amount of waveform data Velvetloads into your computer’s RAM.•Eco: Is the smallest possible load size. Eco uses fewer system resources, but also limits the range of expression available.•Mid: Provides a good balance between system load and range of expression.•XXL: Is the default load size. XXL, the largest possible load size, provides the maximum range of expression available, but also places the greatest demands onsystem resources.6.Fine Tune – The Fine Tune control adjusts the tuning of Velvet. The maximum tuningdeviation is 2 semitones up or down.7.Velo Curve (Velocity Curve) – Use the Velo Curve sliders to adjust Velvet’s velocitysensitivity. The four sliders from the left to the right represent Velvet’s velocity response from low to high.(wide dynamic range) (no velocity response) (normal response)8.Velo Response (Velocity Response) – These controls adjust the range of volume andtimbre available when playing at different velocities.•Volume: Adjusts the range of volume available. Turn the knob counter-clockwise to reduce the variation in volume when playing from low to high velocities. Turn theknob clockwise to increase the range.•Timbre: Adjusts the range of timbre available. Turn the knob counter-clockwise to reduce the variation in timbre when playing from low to high velocities. Turn the knobclockwise to increase the range.Tip: MIDI keyboards can have different velocity response behavior. Use the Velocity Response parameters to tune Velvet to the maximum velocity output of your keyboard.9.Timbre – These controls change the overall sound of the selected electric piano model.Turn the knob counter-clockwise for a soft, mellow sound; turn clockwise for a hard, bright sound. Used in combination with the Velocity Response controls, you can achieve a wide range of timbral responses. The Vintage Mode switch simulates the sonic characteristcs of many vintage electric piano recordings by adding a gentle low shelf boost to the overall sound.Preamp/EQ and FX SectionThis area of Velvet can be sub-divided into two sections: Preamp/EQ and FX.•Preamp/EQ: These controls adjust Velvet’s sound using a compressor, tube overdrive, and a three-band equalizer with a sweepable parametric mid-band.Velvet’s signal passes through the Preamp section before being sent into the FXsection.•FX: Velvet provides six categories of classic vintage effects. All of these effects can be switched on simultaneously, but the parameters of only one effect can be viewedat the same time. The FX section receives signal from the Preamp/EQ section andand passes its output to the Master Output Volume on the Piano Front Panel.p (Compressor) – The Compressor control adjusts Velvet’s dynamics using a soft-knee compressor. Turn the Compressor control to the left to accentuate the attacks, and to the right to boost the piano’s sustain.2.Tube Drive – The Tube Drive control adds harmonics and compression to the signal,emulating the behavior of a tube preamp responding dynamically to the input level. Turn the knob clockwise to increase the Tube Drive amount.3.Equalizer Section Controls – The three-band Equalizer provides a low band, a highband, and a parametric mid band for adjusting Velvet’s tone. The EQ section can be engaged or bypassed by clicking the EQ button at the top of this section. The corresponding light is illuminated when the EQ is active.4.EQ Level – The EQ Level control rebalances the volume of Velvet’s signal to compensatefor level changes caused by the Equalizer. Turn this knob counter-clockwise to attenuate, or clockwise to boost the signal before it is sent to the FX section.5.Insert Selector – Velvet has six insert effects that can be independently edited orswitched on and off.•To select an insert effect for editing, click the button corresponding to the effect.•To switch an effect on or off, click the small light to the right of each button. When an effect is active, this red light will be illuminated. If an effect is not active, the light willnot be illuminated.Tip: Click the FX button to quickly switch all insert effects on or off.6.Insert Effect Parameters – The knobs and sliders in this area change depending on whatinsert is selected above.Each effect can have up to four variations that can be selected using the vertical slider. The knobs and buttons to the right of the slider can then be used to fine-tune the effect.Configuration Page1.Mechanics Through FX – Velvet gives you the option of either routing mechanical noisesthrough the FX section or to let mechanical noises bypass the FX section. By default, the mechanical noises bypass FX section (i.e., this parameter is set Off) as this most closely models real-world recording conditions. However, if you would like the mechanical noises of Velvet to also be sent through the FX section, set this menu to On.2.Pedal Noise – This parameter lets you switch sustain pedal noises on and off. By default,this parameter is set to On.3.W ah Before Fuzz – By default, Velvet routes its signal through distortion insert effectsbefore the wah effect. Some players prefer to route their piano’s signal through the Wah first, followed by the distortion. This can be done by setting this parameter to On.4.Tremolo Before FX – By default, the tremolo effects of Velvet happen after the FXinserts. If you would prefer to have the tremolo effects happen before the FX section, set this parameter to On.5.Content Location – Velvet contains a large file called Velvet Data.big that contains all ofthe sample data for the modeled instruments. If Velvet is unable to locate this file at startup (for example, if you have moved the file to a new hard disk), you can manually locate the new file by clicking here.MIDI Controller MappingVelvet lets you assign standard MIDI controllers to virtually any parameter so that you can control Velvet from a MIDI controller in real time.To assign a MIDI controller to a parameter:1.Right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac) a control.2.Do one of the following:a.Select the desired MIDI controller from the Assign sub-menu.b.Select Learn and then move the desired control on your MIDI controller. Theparameter is automatically assigned to that control.To un-assign a MIDI controller:1.Right-click (Windows or Mac) or Control-click (Mac) an assigned control.2.From the pop-up menu, select Forget.About the Velvet Piano ModelsVelvet provides five models of legendary electromagnetic pianos. While Velvet offers a large range of options for changing and adjusting the sound, choosing the right piano model is the most important step to achieve the desired sound and feel. Each of the five models has been accurately replicated from selected originals that have been adjusted and modified to perfection. Sound character, playing feel, and behavior are all based on the models.Note that model names of the models do not refer to the exact original pianos that were studied during the development of Velvet, but rather give you a hint to which kind of Rhodes or Wurlitzer sound is widely associated with the model.Piano Model: SC73SC73 creates the typical sound ofthe Rhodes Suitcase 73. Thetines are set to a soft characterwith lots of body. If you do not plan to use yourdevelopment tool in a way that will depend on any of these packages, you can run a non-standardinstallation, which will skip their download and installation, thus saving disk space and time taken forinstallation. Java Modelling Tools:an Open Source Suite for Queueing Network Modelling and Workload AnalysisMarco Bertoli,Giuliano Casale,Giuseppe Serazzi∗Politecnico di Milano-DEI,Via Ponzio,34/5,I-20133Milan,Italy,{bertoli,casale,serazzi}@elet.polimi.itAbstractThe Java Modelling Tools(JMT)is an open source suite for performance evaluation,capacity planning and mod-elling of computer and communication systems.The suite implements numerous state-of-the-art algorithms for the ex-act,asymptotic and simulative analysis of queueing network models,either with or without product-form solution.Mod-els can be described either through wizard dialogs or with a graphical user-friendly interface.The suite includes alsoa workload analysis tool based on clustering techniques.1.IntroductionThe use of modelling techniques for performance eval-uation of computer and communication systems is a well known methodology for capacity planning,tuning,opti-mization and procurement studies.This process requires the use of analytical or simulative methods,often based on queueing network models.Despite the numerous research efforts devoted in the past to the efficient solution of these models[3],there are very few free open-source Java suites for conducting a complete performance evaluation study based on queueing networks,from the workload characteri-zation to the modelling phases.In this paper we introduce the Java Modelling Tools (JMT),a new integrated performance evaluation suite, based on queueing network models,distributed under the GNU General Public Licence.The suite has been devel-oped in the Java language and incorporates an XML data layer that enables full portability across different hardware and software platforms(e.g.,Linux,Windows,Mac).JMT has been developed with two main objectives:(1)to sup-port performance evaluation scientists and practitioners in the analysis of complex systems;(2)as a didactic tool to ∗This work was partially supported by the Italian FIRB-Perf project.help students to understand the basic principles of perfor-mance evaluation and modelling.In the following we sum-marize the fundamental modules of the suite,focusing on their main features.2.Suite Main FeaturesThe JMT suite is composed offive tools that support dif-ferent analyses frequently used in capacity planning studies. The organization of the suite is depicted in Figure1.The main features of each tool follows.JSIM:a discrete-event simulator for the analysis of queue-ing network models.An intuitive sequence of wizard win-dows helps specifying network properties.The simulation engine supports several probability distributions for char-acterizing service and inter-arrival times,e.g.,exponential, hyperexponential,uniform,Erlang and Pareto.Random number generation is based on the Mersenne twister engine [4].It is also possible to reproduce a given sequence of ran-dom numbers,in order to simulate real workloads from col-lected logfiles.Load-dependent strategies using arbitrary functions of the current queue-length can be specified.JSIM supports state-independent routing strategies,e.g., Markovian or round robin,as well as state-dependent strate-gies,e.g.,routing to the server with minimum utilization,or with the shortest response time,or with minimum queue-length.Performance indices like throughputs,utilizations,re-sponse times,residence times,queue-lengths are evaluated.
