The Time Message
The Time MessageYou may have been exposed to this idea before ,but this time try to hear. There is a message that is trying to reach you,and it is important that it get through loud and clear. The message?Time management!Time is elusive and tricky. It is the easiest thing in the world to waste---the most difficult to control. When you look ahead,it may appear you have more than you need.Yet it has a way of slipping through your fingers like quicksand. You may suddenly find that there is no way to stretch the little time you have left to cover all your obligations. For example,as a beginning student looking ahead to a full term you may feel that you have an oversupply of time on your hands. But toward the end of the term you may panic because time is running out.The answer?Control!Time is dangerous. If you don’t control it,it will control you.If you don’t made it word for you,it will work against you.You must become the master of time, not the servant.Study hard and play hard is an old proverb, but it still makes sense. You have plenty of time for classes, study, work, and play if you use your time properly. It is not how much time you allocate for study that counts but how much you learn when you do study.Too much wasted time is bad medicine. The more time you waste, the easier it is to continue wasting time.Soon, doing nothing becomes a habit you can’t break. It becomes a drug. When this happens, you lose your feeling of accomplishment and you fall ty the wayside.Afull schedule is a good schedule. Some students refuse to hear the time message. They refuse to accept the fact that college life demands some degree of time control. There is no escape. So what’s the next step?If you seriously wish to get the time message, this passage will give it to you.Remember-it will not only improve your grades but also free you to enjoy college life more.Message 1.Time is valuable---control it from the beginning.Time is today, not tomorrow or next week.Start your plan at the beginning of the term and readjust it with each new project. Thus you can spread your word time around a little.Message 2.Get the notebook habit.Go and buy a pochet-size notebook. There are many varieties of these special notebooks.Select the one you like e it to schedule your study time each day.You can also use it to note important dates, appointments, addresses, and telephone numbers.Keep it with you at all times.Message3.Prepare a weekly study schedule. The main purpose of the notebook is to help you prepare a weekly study schedule.Once prepared, follow the same pattern every week with minor adjustments.Sunday is an excellent day to make rp your schedule for the following week.Write in your class schedule first.Add your work hours,if any. Then write in the hours each day you feel you must allocate for study.Keep it simple.Message 4.Be realistic. When you plan time for these things,be realistic.Don’t underestimate.Overestimate,if possible so that emergencies that arise don’t hang you up.Otherwise you entire routine may get thrown off balance while you devote night and day to crash efforts.Message 5.Make study time fit the course. How much study time you schedule for each classroom hour depends on four factors:(1)your ability,(2)the difficulty of the class,(3)the grades you hope to achieve,and(4)how well you useyour study time. One thing, however,is certain:you should schedule a minimum of one hour of study for each classroom hour.In many cases, more will be required.Message 6.Keep your schedule flexible.A good schedule must have a little give so that special projects can be taken care of properly.Think out and prepare your schedule each week and do not become a slave to an inflexible pattern.Adjust it as you deem necessary.Message 7.Study first---fun later. You will enjoy your fun time more after you have completed your study responsibilies. So,where possible, schedule your study hours in advance of fu activities. This is a sound principle to follow,so keep it in mind as you prepare your first schefule.’Message 8.Study some each class day. Some concentrated study each day is better than many study hour one day and nothing the next.As you word out your individual schedule, attempt to include a minimum of two study hours each day. This will not only keep the study habit alive but also keep you up to date on your class assignments and projects.Few beginning freshmen can control their time effectively without a written schedule,so why kid yourself into thinking you don’t need one?You ter on,when you have had more experience and you have the time-control habit, you may be able to operate without it.Of course the schedule is only the first step.Once you have it prepared, you must stick with it and follow it faithfully. You must push away the many temptations that are always present or your schedule is useless.Your schedule will give you control only of you make it work.。

What about when you go to a birthday party? Are you shy (害羞的)? If you are, you are not alone.
The skin is an essential part of your body and is its largest organ. As you can imagine, getting burnt can lead to very serious injuries. The first and most important step in the treatment of burns is giving first aid. CAUSES OF BURNSYou can get burnt by a variety of things: hot liquids, steam, fire, radiation, the sun, electricity, acids, or other chemicals. TYPES OF BURNSBurns are divided into three types, depending on the depth of skin damage. ● First- degree burns These affect only the top few millimetres of the skin. These burns are not serious. Examples include mild sunburn and burns caused by other minor household incidents.● Second- degree burns These go below the top layer of the skin. They are serious and take a few weeks to get better. Examples include burns caused by hot liquids.● Third- degree burns These affect every layer of the skin, and sometimes the tissue under it. Examples include burns caused by electric shocks, burning clothes, or petrol fires. These burns cause very severe internal injuries and the victim must go to the hospital at once.FIRST-AID TREATMENT1. Place burns under cool running water, especially within the first ten minutes. The cool water stops the burning process and reduces the pain and swelling.2. Dry the burnt area gently with a clean cloth.3. Remove any clothes using scissors if necessary, unless you see the fabric sticking to the burnt skin.4. Cover the burnt area with a loose clean cloth. Applying oil to the injured areas is a bad idea, as it will keep the heat in the wounds and may cause infection.5. If burns are on the face, make sure the victim can still breathe.6. If the victim is suffering from second or third- degree burns, there is an urgent need to take him/ her to the hospital at once.1. What is an example of a first- degree burn mentioned in the text?A.A slight kitchen burn. B.A burn from very hot water.C.A severe burn from a petrol fire. D.A deep tissue damage from steam.2. Why shouldn't oil be applied to burn?A.It is a poor conductor of heat.B.It can worsen the burn by trapping heat.C.It will increase pain and cause immediate scarring.D.It may lead to infection by creating a wet environment.3. Where would you expect to find the information above?A.A financial newsletter. B.A beauty and skincare guide.C.A home improvement magazine. D.A first- aid book.On a quiet afternoon, as the sunlight shone through the curtains and cast a warm glow on the attic (阁楼) floor, I started a journey through time. It was there, in the corner behind the old suitcase, that I made a fascinating discovery—a shoebox filled with old letters. These letters, tied together with a faded ribbon, were a collection of conversations between my grandmother and her friends from past time. The dusty smell of aged paper and ink filled the air, transporting me to a time when communication was a deliberate and heartfelt act.In an age where a simple text or email can convey our thoughts, these letters served as a deeply touching reminder of the depth and meaning that can be found in the written word. They were more than just messages; they were pieces of a life, snapshots of a time, and most importantly, they were a bridge between the past and the present, between my grandmother's generation and my own. With the letters safely back in their resting place, I made a quiet promise to myself— to pick up pen and paper more often, to write not just messages, but little pieces of history that future generations might one day cherish. In a world racing towards the future, it's the old letters that remind us to slow down, to appreciate the moment, and to write our own stories with care. And perhaps, one day, someone will find my letters and experience the same joy of discovery, the same sense of connection across the years. Even so, there are convincing reasons that chatting up your potted friends is good for them—and you.Plants don't interrupt when you' re speaking. They don't argue or ask difficult questions. And regardless of whether they're actually listening, research has shown them to be a calming presence. It's no wonder, then, that so many of us talk to ours.In a 2022 survey by trees. com. 50 percent of the 1, 250 respondents reported talking to their plants and trees. When asked why, 65 percent said they believe it helps them grow. The research. however, isn't definitive about this point. While studies have found that vibrations (震动) caused by sound do affect plants, the jury's still out on whether the human voice offers any specific benefit.A study in a 2003 issue of the journal Ultrasonics investigated the effects of classical music and the sounds of birds, insects and water on the growth of Chinese cabbage and cucumber. The conclusion? Both forms of sound exposure increased the vegetables' growth.“Plants definitely respond to vibrations in their environment — which can cause plants to grow differently and become more resistant to falling over, " says Heidi Appel. a professor of environmental sciences at the University of Toledo in Ohio. “Those vibrations can come from airborne (空气传播的) sounds or insects moving on the plants themselves. And plants will respond differently to tones and music than to silence. "Despite the lack of studies and evidence about the benefits of talking to your plants, there is at least one potential benefit. “If we identify with a living organism that we' re tasked with taking care of, we' re going to take better car c of it, " Appel says. For example, if talking to your plants helps you feel more connected to them, you might water, dust and prune (修剪) them more regularly and take other measures to care for them and help them thrive.8. What does “the jury's still out” imply about the effect of the human voice on plants in the paragraph 3?A.The result is still up in the air. B.The fact will be proven.C.General agreement has been reached. D.The possibility is ruled out.9. What does Heidi Appel suggest about the relationship between plants and humans?A.Plants prefer music over other sounds.B.Sound has little effect on plant growth.C.Feeling connected to plants can lead to better care.D.Plants can communicate with humans through sound.10. What is the author's attitude to the benefits of talking to plants?A.Indifferent and unconvinced. B.Objective with a positive outlook.C.Critical and dismissive. D.Highly enthusiastic and supportive.11. What is the main idea of the passage?A.The best ways to care for plants. B.The history of plant research.C.How talking to plants can affect them. D.The advantages of indoor gardening. Why does one plus one equal two? One possible answer is “It just does!” Math can seem like a world of rules you just have to follow, which makes it seem rigid and boring. Whereas my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking rules, or at least pushing against them. Sometimes, one plus one can equal more than two. If you and your friend both have enough cash to buy one cup of coffee, then together you still might have enough to buy three. If one pair of tennis players gets together with another pair for an afternoon of tennis, there ends up being more than two pairs of tennis players because they could play in all sorts of different combinations. Sometimes, one plus one is just one, like if you put a pile of sand on top of another pile of sand, then you just get on c pile of sand. Or, as an art student of mine pointed out, if you mix one color with on c color, you get one color.Actually, Math isn't really about getting the right answer. It's about building good justifications. I often hear parents complaining if children can do something one way, why do they need to know all these other ways?Imagine we were designing a jungle gym for children. We'd want to test it in every possible way to make sure it's safe. We'd want to jump on it, swing from it, fall from it and try to pull it out of the ground, rather than simply trusting that we built it well. The solidity of math comes from not wanting to trust things, but wanting to jump and swing and know that our framework will hold up. One of the reasons the framework is so strong is preciscly because we question it so deeply.I hope that we will start seeing mathematics as a place to pose questions and explore answers, rather than a place where the answers are fixed and we' re supposed to know them. And I hope we will place more emphasis on those who are curious, and who follow their curiosity on a journey that may be slow and without a clear destination, a quiet walk through the countryside rather than a race to the finish.12. In what way does the author approach mathematical rules?A.Thinking outside the box. B.Following them strictly.C.Finding them entertaining. D.Recognizing their importance.13. In the context of tennis players, what does the author mean by “one plus one can be more than two”?A.Tennis players can teach each other new techniques.B.More tennis equipment is needed for each additional player.C.The enjoyment of tennis doubles when more players are involved.D.Two pairs of tennis players can form multiple doubles combinations.14. What is the purpose of mentioning the jungle gym in paragraph 5?A.To simplify the complexity of mathematical learning.B.To illustrate the value of diverse mathematical approaches.C.To demonstrate that math is only useful in practical applications.D.To argue that a single method is sufficient for understanding math.15. What does the author hope for the future of mathematics?A.It will become more rule- based. B.It will focus on getting the correctanswer.C.It will promote the joy of discovery. D.It will emphasize speed and efficiency. Summer can be fun—until boredom strikes. In such a translation one is concerned with the dynamic relationship, that the relationship between receptor and message should be substantially the same as that which existed between the original receptors and the message.
The nature of the message
Messages differ primarily in the degree to which content or form is the dominant consideration.Of course, the content of a message can never be completely abstracted from the form, and form is nothing apart from content; but in some messages the content is of primary consideration, and in others the form must be given a higher priority.

Warm-up Games and Activities
English Club Warm-up Games and Activities20 QuestionsOne person thinks of an object (person, place, or thing). Everyone takes turns asking yes/no questions until someone can guess correctly (or until 20 questions are asked). The difficult part is that you cannot ask "wh" questions! Example: PINEAPPLE. Does it talk? No. Does it make life easier? No. Do you eat it? Yes. Is it something you would eat for dinner? No. Etc...If someone makes a mistake in forming the question, other club members can help turn it into a proper question. Can't Say Yes or NoIn this game everyone is given a certain number of coins or squares of paper (about 10). Everyone moves around the room starting conversations and asking each other questions. The only rule is that you cannot say the words YES or NO. If you accidentally say one of these words, you have to give a coin or square to the person who you said it to. Try to trick each other by asking questions that you would almost always answer with a yes or no. Think of other ways to trick your friends. Sometimes asking two quick questions in a row works well. (Especially tag questions: Are you new here? This is your first time in America, isn't it?). This game is a great way to practise using small talk and to add variety to your vocabulary. It also makes everyone laugh.Fact or FictionIn this game, one person tells a short story about themselves or someone they know or heard about. Usually it is something funny or crazy. It can be a true story, or something made up.Example: Josh tells a story about his Uncle Leo who sleeps in the nude. One day Uncle Leo was sleepwalking and he went outside and took his dog for a walk. The next door neighbour was coming home late from work and saw him! She called the police and he got arrested for being naked in public. Everyone around the room has to say whether they think Josh's story is fact (true) or fiction (made up). Josh reveals the truth when everyone has guessed. Members can take turns telling a story.Chain FairytaleThis is a fun writing warm-up. Everyone has a piece of paper and writes the first sentence or two to start a fairytale (not one that already exists). Example: Once upon a time there was a frog that had no legs. He wanted to get married, but there were no female legless frogs in the land. After one minute the leader will say "SWITCH". At this time the writers have to put down their pens and pass the papers. They cannot finish their sentences. Then, the next writers will continue the story. After about ten minutes you will have as many silly stories to read as you have club members. The leader should warn the writers that they will soon have towrap-up the story during the last two minutes so that each story has a conclusion. Read all of the stories out loud for a good laugh. You can extend this activity by trying to edit each other's writing and spelling errors. Draw the PictureIn this activity members split up into pairs or small groups. One person looks at a scene from a magazine or book (the leader should cut out enough pictures, or bring in enough magazines for the club). The other person has a pencil and a blank piece of paper. The person with the picture will try to describe everything he sees to the drawer. This is good practice for using prepositions of place. When the describer is finished, compare the drawings to the real thing! Whose is the closest to the original?CategoriesFor this game, one person thinks of a category, such as MOVIES. In a circle, everyone must take a turn thinking of a Movie title (in English of course). If someone takes too long to give an answer (the leader should count to five) then that person is out and a new category begins. If someone gives an answer that doesn't make sense or is incorrect, he is also out of the game. For example, if the category is VEGETABLES and someone says "banana" that person is out. The game continues until only one person is left!Who am I?In this game, the leader prepares cards with famous people's names on them. The leader tapes one card on the back of each member. Then everyone pretends they are at a party and asks each other questions to find out their own identities. When someone guesses their own name correctly, the name-tag gets taped to their front and they continue to chat with the party guests until everyone is wearing the nametag on the front. JeopardyIn this game, which is based on the famous gameshow Jeopardy, everyone writes down ten answers to questions about themselves. After writing down the answers, people have to form pairs or small groups and try to find out what the questions are.Example: (answer = purple) "What is your favorite colour?" "Blue." "What colour do you hate?" "Green." "What colour is your underwear?" "Purple!" You can stop at three guesses if you want, or keep going until someone in the club can guess the question.Hot SeatIn this game, the club is split up into two teams. One member from each team sits facing the group. The leader holds up a word (or writes it on the board if you are in a classroom) for all of the team members to see except for the two players in the hot seats. The teams must try to get the person in the hot seat to guess the word or phrase. The first person to guess correctly gets to stand up and a new member from their team takes the hot seat. The person on the other team has to remain in the hot seat until she gets an answer first. You can keep score or just play for fun. This game can also beplayed in pairs. One pair member closes their eyes while the leader shows the word to the other pair members. The first pair to get the word right gets a point. Warning! This is a loud game because people tend to get excited and yell!Broken TelephoneThis is a listening and pronunciation activity that always gets people laughing. The leader first must think of a sentence or phrase and whisper it to the person beside her. That person will then whisper what she heard to the next person. Each person can only say, "Can you please repeat that?" one time. When the message reaches the end of the chain that person must speak out loud. Oftentimes the message will be completely different when it reaches the end. Try to find out where the chain broke! In a big group you can send the message two ways and find out which team comes closest to the real message. (A famous example is the army message that started as "Send reinforcements, we're going to advance" and ended as "Send three and fourpence, we're going to a dance.")Here are some more useful ESL games and activities.。

LESSON 1 The Time Message1, Time is tricky. It is difficult to control and easy to waste. When you look ahead, you think you have more time than you need. For example, at the beginning of a semester, you may feel that you have plenty of time on your hands. But toward the end of the term you may suddenly find that time is running out. You don’t have enough time to cover all your duties,so you get worried. What is the answer? Control!2, Time is dangerous. If you don’t control,it will control you.If you don’t make it work for you,it will work against you. So you must become the master of time, not its servant. As a first –year college student, time management will be your number one problem.3, Time is valuable.wasting time is a bad habit. It is like a drug.the more time you waste, the easier it is to go on wasting time.if you seriously wish to get the most out of college, you must put the time message into practice.Message 1. Control time at the beginning.4, Time is today, not tomorrow or next week.Start your plan at the beginning of the term.Message 2. His father, a shoemaker, had died , and his mother had married again.2, One day the boy went to ask a favor of the prince of Denmark. When the prince asked him what he wanted, the boy s aid,”I want to write plays in poetry and act at the Royal Theater.” The prince looke d at the boy, at his big hands and feet, at his big nose and large serious eyes, and gave a sensible answer. “It is one thing to act in plays, another to write them. I tell you this for your own good; learn a useful trade like shoemarking.”3, So the boy, who was not sensible at all, went home. There he took what little money he had, said good-bye to his mother and his stepfather and started out to seek his fortune(seek one's fortune). He was sure that some day(來日) the name Hans Christan Andersen would be known all over Denmark.4, To believe such a story one would have to believe in fairy tales! Hans Christan knew many much tales. He had heard some of them from his father, who had worked hard at his trade, but liked to real better than to make shoes. In the evenings, he had read aloud from The Arabian Nights. His wife understood very little of the book, but the boy, pretending to sleep, understood every word.5, By day, Hans Christian went to a house where old women worked as weavers. There he listened to the tales that the women told as they worked at their weaving. In those days, there were almost as many tales in Denmark as there were people to tell them.6, Among the tales told in the town of Odense, where Andersen was born in 1805, was one about a fairy who brought death to those who danced with her. To this tale, Hans Christian later added a story from his own life.7, Once, when his father was still alive, a young lady ordered a pair of red shoes. When she refused to pay for them, unhappiness f illed the poor shoemaker’s house. From that smell tragedy and the story of the dancing fairy, the shoemaker’s son years later wrote the story that millions of people now know as The Red Shoes. The genius of Andersen is that he put so much of everyday life into the wonder of his fairy tales.8, When Hans Christian’s mother was a little girl, she was sent out on the streets to beg. She did not want to beg, so she sat out of sight under one of the city bridges. She warmed her cold feet in her hands, for she had no shoes. She was afraid to go home. Years later, her son, in his pity for her and his anger at the world, wrote the angry story She’ No Good and the famous tale The little match girl.9, Through his genius, he changed every early experience, even hi s father’s death, into a fairy tale. One cold day the boy had stood looking at the white patterns formed on the window by the frost. His father showed him a white, woman-like figure among the frost patterns.”That is the snow Queen,” said the shoemaker. “S oon she will be coming for me.” A few months later he was dead. And years later, Andersen turned that sad experience into a fairy tale, The Snow Queen.10, After the prince told him to learn a trade, Hans Christian went to Copenhagen. He was just fourteen years old at the time.11, When he arrived in the city, he went to see as many important people as he could fine – dancers, writer and theater people of Copenhagen. But none of themlent a helping hand to the boy with the big hands, the big feet and the big nose. Finally, he had just seven pennies left.12, The boy had a beautiful high, clear voice. One day a music teacher heard him singing and decided to help him. He collected money from his friends and gave it to the boy so that he could buy food and clothing while he studied singing.13, Hans Christians was happier than he had ever been in his life. But soon his boy’s voice broke. The beautiful high voice was gone forever.14, The boy soon found new friends who admired his genius. There was even a princess who gave him a little money from time to time(有時) for food and clothes. But Hans Christian bought little food and no clothes. Instead, he bought books and went to the theater.LESSON 3 Hans Christian Andersen’s Own Fairy Tale(ii)Donald and louise peattie1, In Copenhagen, Hans Christian Andersen lived in an attic in an old house , where he had a good view of the city. But there was one big fact that he could not see right under his own nose.(口語:就在他的面前) The plays and poetry that he wrote were not very good.2, Hans Christian made friends with a few kind仁慈的,好心的 people. Among them was Jonas Collin of the Royal Theater . This kind man collected funds from friends to send the young writer to school. Hans felt most at ease with children. He ate his dinner in turn at the homes of six friends. In each home the children begged him for stories.3, Hans told a tale so vividly that you could see and hear toy玩具 soldiers marching and toy horses galloping. And he could make the most wonderful papercuts. These are kept today in the Andersen Museum博物馆,which is in the house where he was born in Odense.4, Andersen remained single all his life. The good Collin family- three generations(一代人) of them----became all the family he was ever to have. They all loved him , but they advised him not to write any more poetry and plays, and to try to get a government政府 job. They talked as he later made the animals talk in his stories:”I tell you this for your own good,” said the Hen to the Ugly Duckling丑小鴨, “you should learn to lay eggs like me.” In the Ugly Duckling Hans Christia n told the story of his own life.5, When his first book of fairy tales was published in 1835, Andersen didn’t think it would be successful, but children read the stories and wanted more. So, encouraged by their interest ,he began what we know today as his great work. For 37 years, a new book of Andersen’s fairy tales came out each Christmas. The books were full of every truth, of wonder, of sad beauty, of humor. Children and their parents had never read such tales before.6, Andersen’s tales are a poet ‘s way of telling us the truth about ourselves. He looked deeply into the heart of things. Even in a child’s toy lost in the street, he could see some story with the light of gold in it. All of us laugh at the humor of The Emperor’s New Clothes, but we remember the story every time men pretend to be something that they are not.7, Although he was now famous, he was more kind-hearted than ever. One day on the street he met a man who had once treated him badly. The old and unhappy man said that he was sorry for what he had done. Andersen forgave the man and comforted him. The prince who had told Andersen to learn to useful trade was now。
14. The Time Machine
14.The Time Machine 时间机器After H. G. Wells韦尔斯TEXTIn the waning year of the nineteenth century, the Time Traveler is entertaining some friends after dinner with a discussion of time as the fourth dimension. All things, he says, exist not only in length, breadth, and thickness, but in time as well. The only reason we cannot properly perceive the dimension of time is that we ourselves are moving in it.
To correct this condition and to test his theories, the Time Traveler has constructed a machine designed to help him move backwards or forwards through the centuries. He jolts his skeptical guests (a politician, a doctor, and a psychologist) when he shows them an actual model of the machine, which has taken him two years to construct. He persuads the psychologist to press a lever, and suddenly the model disappears. The Time Traveler tells his astonished guests that as soon as his machineis perfected he hopes to launch himself into the future.

Title: Revisiting the Afternoon: A Chronological Journey from 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM.Embarking on a chronological journey through the afternoon, we step into a world where every minute, every second, holds a story. This particular journey begins at 12:30 PM and traverses backwards, ending at 1:30 PM. Join me as we relive the moments that unfolded, from the recent past to a slightly distant one, in the warm embrace of the afternoon sun.As we approach the midpoint of the journey, the clock ticks down to 12:45 PM. The world outside is bathed in a soft, golden hue, casting a warm shadow over everything it touches. Office workers glance at their watches, some with a hint of urgency, others with a casual ease. On the streets, pedestrians walk with purpose, their footsteps echoing on the pavement. A gentle breeze brushes past, carrying the scent of lunchtime meals and the promise of alazy afternoon. At 12:35 PM, the atmosphere takes on a different hue. The bustle and hustle of lunchtime begin to settle, replaced by a more relaxed pace. Conversations around the office watercooler become deeper, more meaningful. Outdoors, children play in the park, their laughter echoing through the air. A sense of tranquility pervades the air, a welcome respite from the bustle of the morning. At 12:30 PM precisely, we reach the starting point of our journey. The sun is at its zenith, casting its warmest rays upon the earth. The world seems to pause for a moment, as if to appreciate the perfect symmetry of the hour.People pause in their activities, taking a moment to appreciate the beauty of the moment. It's a moment of reflection, a moment of stillness, in the midst of the constant flux of time.As we move backwards in time, each passing moment becomes increasingly distinct. At 12:25 PM, the sun's rays begin to soften, casting a more diffused light. The airseems to hold a hint of coolness, a preview of the evening breeze. People begin to gather their things, preparing to return to their desks or continue on with their afternoon plans. At 12:20 PM, the streets are abuzz with activity. Cars honk, buses rumble, and pedestrians hustle by. The scent of lunchtime leftovers mingles with the familiar odor of city streets. A sense of anticipation fills the air, as if everyone is bracing for what the afternoon will bring.By 12:15 PM, the sun's position has shifted slightly, casting longer shadows. The temperature seems to drop slightly, as if in anticipation of the approaching evening. People's movements become more deliberate, their faces set in a determined expression. The city is waking up to the reality of the afternoon, gearing up for the tasks that lie ahead. Finally, at 1:30 PM, we reach the end of our journey. The clock ticks over, marking the passage of time. The world outside has transformed, the sun's position hasshifted, and the atmosphere has changed. Yet, in the blink of an eye, it's as if none of it happened. Time moves on, unrelenting, and we are left with only memories of the moments that once were.In conclusion, this chronological journey through the afternoon has been a fascinating exercise. It has allowed us to relive the moments that unfolded, from the recent past to a slightly distant one. As we look back, we realize that each moment, each second, holds a story. And while time may move on relentlessly, the memories we create along the way are what truly matter. So, as we step into the next hour, let us cherish the moments that lie ahead and create memories that will last a lifetime.。
Unit 1 PersonalityIn-Class Reading

As a high-volume user you pay an access fee of just $60 a month but even lower call rates.
2 short-distance of long distance
Calls in each plan are charged at only two rates—short-distance and long-distance.
3 NOT primarily intended for people... work

The Time MessageYou may have been exposed to this idea before, but this time try to hear. There is a message that is trying to reach you, and it is important that it get through loud and clear. The message?Time management!Time is elusive and tricky. It is the easiest thing in the world to waste – the most difficult to control. When you look ahead, it may appear you have more than you need. Yet it has a way of slipping through your fingers like quicksand. You may suddenly find that there is no way to stretch the little time you have left to cover all your obligations. For example, as a beginning student looking ahead to a full term you may feel that you have an oversupply of time on your hands. But toward the end of the term you may panic because time is running out. The answer?Control!Time is dangerous. If you don’t control it, it will control you. If you don’t make it work for you, it will work against you. You must become the master of time, not the servant.Study hard and play hard is an old proverb, but it still makes sense. You have plenty of time for classes, study, work, and play if you use your time properly. It is not how much time you allocate for study that counts but how much you learn when you do study.Too much wasted time is bad medicine. The more time you waste, the easier it is to continue wasting time. Soon, doing nothing becomes a habit you can’t break. It becomes a drug. When this happens, you lose your feeling of accomplishment and you fall by the wayside. A full schedule is a good schedule. Some students refuse to hear the time message. They refuse to accept the fact that college life demands some degree of time control. There is no escape. So what’s the next step? If you seriously wish to get the time message, this passage will give it to you. Remember – it will not only improve your grades but also free you to enjoy college life more.Message 1 Time is valuable – control it from the beginning.Time is today, not tomorrow or next week. Start your plan at the beginning of the term and readjust it with each new project. Thus you can spread your work time round a little.Message 2 Get the notebook habit.Go and buy a pocket-size notebook. There are many varieties of these special notebooks. Select the one you like best. Use it to schedule your study time each day. You can also use it tonote important dates, appointments, addresses, and telephone numbers. Keep it with you at all times.Message 3 Prepare a weekly study schedule. The main purpose of the notebook is to help you prepare a weekly study schedule. Once prepared, follow the same pattern every week with minor adjustments. Sunday is an excellent day to make up your schedule for the following week. Write in your class schedule first. Add your work hours, if any. Then write in the hours each day you feel you must allocate for study. Keep it simple.Message 4 Be realisticWhen you plan time for these things, be realistic. Don’t underestimate. Overestimate, if possible, so that emergencies that arise don’t hang you up. Otherwise your entire routine may get thrown off balance while you devote night and day to crash efforts.Message 5 Make study time fit the courseHow much study time you schedule for each classroom hour depends on four factors: (1) your ability, (2) the difficulty of the class, (3) the grades you hope to achieve, and (4) how well you use your study time. One thing, however, is certain: you should schedule a minimum of one hour of study for each classroom hour. In many cases, more will be required.Message 6 Keep your schedule flexible.A good schedule must have a little give so that special projects can be taken care of properly. Think out and prepare your schedule each week and do not become a slave to an inflexible pattern. Adjust it as you deem necessary.Message 7 Study first – fun laterYou will enjoy your fun time more after you have completed your study responsibilities. So, where possible, schedule your study hours in advance of fun activities. This is a sound principle to follow, so keep it in mind as you prepare your first schedule.Message 8 Study some each class daySome concentrated study each day is better than many study hours one day and nothing the next. As you work out your individual schedule, attempt to include a minimum of two study hours each day. This will not only keep the study habit alive but also keep you up to date on your class assignments and projects.Few beginning freshmen can control their time effectively without a written schedule, so why kid yourself into thinking you don’t need one? You do. Later on, when you have had more experience and you have the time-control habit, you may be able to operate without it. Of course the schedule is only the first step. Once you have it prepared, you must stick with it and follow it faithfully. You must push away the many temptations that you are always present or your schedule is useless. Your schedule will give you control only if you make it work.Questions:1.Do you find it difficult to follow up all the assignments? How do you arrange your dailystudy? Do you have the habit of time control? If you do, share with your classmates how you manage your time efficiently.2.What’s your attitude toward time? How can we control time instead of being controlledby it except the ways illustrated in the above article?。
