Both my parents came from towns in Mexico．Then I was born in El Paso，Texas，and when I was four, my family moved to a housing project in East Los Angeles．

Weighing too much can damage your health，and obesity is a growing problem for both kids and adults around the world．
Sleep might be one answer to the problem．A new study has found that elementary school students who slept too little were more likely to gain pounds．In the United States today，some 9 million children over the age of 6 are obese (too fat)．
Past studies have shown a link between sleeping less and weighing more，but scientists
have had a tough time determining“which came first , the chicken or the egg，”says Julie C．Lumeng of the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor．In other words，it hasn’t been clear whether kids who weigh too much have trouble sleeping，or whether sleeping less leads to weight gain．Both scenarios(情况)seemed equally possible．
To get a better idea of which causes which，Lumeng and colleagues interviewed the parents
of 785 third graders from around the United States．The parents answered questions about how well their kids slept that year．Three years later，the parents answered the same questions．By sixth grade．18 percent of kids involved in the study were obese．The scientists found no relationship between weight and the students' race or gender．It also didn't matter how strict their parents were，or whether they were boys or girls．Obesity struck all of these groups equally．Instead，sleep seemed to be the key factor．Over the 3 years of the study，the children averaged a healthy 9.5 hours of sleep a night．Some kids，however，slept a lot more-or-less- than others．For the sixth graders，every hour of sleep above the 9.5-hour average was linked to a 20 percent lower risk of being obese．Sleep appeared doubly important for the third graders．
Every extra hour of sleep they got was linked to a 40percent drop in obesity by sixth grade．
“I expected we’d find that this(sleep link with obesity)was just—a bunch—of bunk，”says Lumeng，a pediatrician．But their findings were convincing．No matter how her team looked at The link，“we couldn’t make it go away．”

People have always had to find ways to keep food safe to eat．Methods to dry，smoke and Salt food were invented thousands of years ago．The process of canning is much more recent．This storage method keeps food safe to eat for long periods of time．Today．canning is one of the most popular methods of storing food．
Canning uses heat to kill bacteria and other micro—organisms that cause poisons to form in food．Canning also takes away the air that these organisms need to live．One popular method of canning uses a water bath．
Clean fruits or vegetables are placed in glass bottles．The food can be put into the bottles either hot or cold．The cold method is used for soft fruits and vegetables that could lose their shape or taste．Firmer fruits and most vegetables are usually cooked．They take up less space in the bottles．
After the feed has been placed in glass bottler，boiling water is poured into the bottles to about three centimeters below the top．Then covers are placed on the bottles．But they are not turned all the way．The bottles are placed in a large container filled with warm water that is then brought to a boil．
The water must completely cover the bottles，from three to five centimeters over the top．When the water boils，any air in the bottles will be expelled．The boiling continues for several minutes．Then the bottles are allowed to cool．Finally．they are placed briefly into coldwater．This makes a strong barrier to keep the air out．In other words，a vacuum is created．
When the bottles are completely cool．notes can be placed on them to identify what is inside-The bottles can then be stored in a cool，dark place at a temperature of between 4ºC and 21℃．

Since a university education in the United States is very expensive, most students work in addition to studying. Students usually work part time, but some students take full time jobs. A typical job for a student would be working as a waiter or waitress. Other typical off campus jobs would include being a clerk in a store, or delivering pizza. Sometimes students also find jobs on campus, such as cleaning, working in a cafeteria, or library, or answering telephones. Most student jobs are entry lever and low paying, but have flexible schedules allowing students to attend classes.
Sometimes students also hold more responsible positions, such as managers, or if they are lucky, positions in the area of study what’s they hope will help them fight appointments after they graduate. The double responsibilities of working and studying result in a very busy stressful life for some students. However, it is the only way for many people to finance their college educations. Some Americans believe that the work experience is good for the students since it gives them a test of the real world outside the school.
