and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.
A
A person who believes that he is incapable will not make a real effort, because
he feels that it would be useless. He won't go at a job with the confidence necessary
for success. He is therefore likely to fail, and the failure will strengthen his belief
in his incompetence. Alfred Adler, a famous doctor, had an experience which illustrates this. When he was a small boy he got off to a poor start in arithmetic.
His teacher got the idea that he had no ability in arithmetic, and told his parents what she thought in order that they would not expect too much of him. In this way, they too developed the idea, “Isn't it too bad that Alfred can't do arithmetic?〞He accepted their mistaken estimate of his ability, felt that it was useless to try,and was very poor at arithmetic, just as they expected.
One day Adler succeeded in solving a problem which none of the other students had been able to solve. This gave him confidence. He rejected the idea that he couldn't do arithmetic and was determined to show them that he could. H is newfound confidence stimulated him to go at arithmetic problems with a new spirit. He now worked with interest, determination and purpose, and he soon became extraordinarily good at arithmetic.
This experience made him realize that many people have more ability than they think they have, and that lack of success is as often the result of lack of knowledge of how to apply one's ability, lack of confidence, and lack of determination as it is the result of lack of ability.
56.Why might a person be prevented from doing good work according to the passage?.
A. Because he thinks he is old enough to make the most of his mental facilities
B. Because he accepts another person's mistaken estimate of his ability
C. Because he has the idea that he is incapable of doing everything

57.A person who believes in his low ability will ________.
A. spare no efforts to do things
B. fail to go at a job but never lose heart
C. change to learn other course instead of mathematics
D. show complete lack of confidence
58.As a boy, Alfred Adler was poor at arithmetic at first because ________.
A. he lost his selfconfidence
B. he was weak in thinking
C. his parents expected too much of him
D. his teacher too much of him 59.Which of the following is the most important factor to Alder's success?________ A. Spirit and experience B. Interest and selfrespect
C. Confidence and determination
D. Purpose and knowledge 60.Alder's later experience made him realize that ________.
A. people are not as capable as they think
B. people can be more capable than they think
C. lack of confidence leads to failure
D. lack of ability results in lack of determination

There are over one million superstitions (迷信), and most people believe at least one or two of them.
Many people are superstitious about numbers. They think that there are lucky numbers and unlucky numbers.
The number 13 is often considered unlucky. In some parts of the world, buildings have no 13th floor and streets have no houses with the number 13. In Japan, "4" is considered unlucky because in Japanese the word "four" is pronounced the same as the
word "death". Japanese never give gifts of four knives, four napkins, or four of anything.
What are the lucky numbers? Seven is a lucky number in many places, and "8" is considered a lucky number in Japan and China. In China, businesses often open on August 8, and many couples register to get married at eight past eight on August 8.
Superstitions about numbers are so widespread that some people—called numerologist—make a living by giving advice about numbers.
In 1937, when the Toyoda family of Japan wanted to form a car company, they asked a numerologist if "Toyoda" would be a good name for the company. The numerologist said it would not be. He explained that "Toyota" would be a better name for the company. The family took his advice. As a result, millions of people drive "Toyota" and not "Toyoda".
There are many other kinds of superstitions. There are superstitions about eating, sleeping, sneezing and itching. There are superstitions about animals and holidays and horseshoes.
There are even superstitions about superstitions. Those superstitions will tell people how to reverse bad luck.
When the Japanese bump heads, they immediately bump heads again. According to a Japanese superstition, the first-bump means their parents will die, but the second bump "erases" the first bump.
To reverse bad luck in general, people turn around three times, turn their pockets inside out, or put their hats on backwards.
In the United States, baseball players sometimes wear their caps backwards when their team is losing. It looks silly, but the baseball players do not mind if it helps them win the game.
61. We can know from the passage that superstitions about numbers are ________.
A. popular both in Japan and in China
B. popular only in Japan and in China
C. popular neither in Japan nor in China
D. causing great troubles both in Japan and in China

A. an maths expert
B. a fortune-teller
C. a superman
D. the owner of "Toyota"
63. Which is not mentioned about superstition in the passage?
A. Gifts
B. Names
C. Sports
D. Life expectancy
64.If a Japanese purposely bumps his head again after an accidental bump, we can be sure that he is ______.
A. superstitious
B. happy
C. mad
D. very sad

Electronic waste, or e-waste, refers to electronic products that are no longer usable. This can include TVs, cell phones and computers and other office electronics, electronic toys and videos machines. Today, the average turnover〔更换〕rate for a computer in the United States is every two years, according to the environmental group, Greenpeace.
Greenpeace works out that 20 to 50 million tons of e-waste are produced globally each year. The components〔部件〕in many electronic products contain harmful chemicals that pollute ground water and the environment.
At present , the U.S. has no federal law for the disposal (处理) of e-waste although a few states have e-waste recycling programs in place, but there is no law. The U.S. exports much of its e-waste to third world countries, such as India and China, where workers took apart computers for valuable parts, hoping to sell them for money. But harmful wastes expert, Dr. Bakul Rao, says that's a dangerous practice. "From now on, the recyclers are not very educated. All they know is they can retrieve copper or gold out of it. So, the easiest way to do that is leach (过滤) it out in an acid or burn it off to retrieve it. So, that's where they don't know how to deal with it, neither do they have any health systems in place. So, their exposure is more."
66. Which of the following is most likely not to be a form of e-waste?
A. A mobile phone
B. A radio
C. An e-bike
D. A table
67 What does the underlined word "retrieve" (paragraph 2) probably mean?
A. look into
B. take apart
C. get back
D. throw away
68. What of the following statements is true according to the passage?
A. The U.S. has strict national laws for dealing with e-waste.
B. Third world countries import e-waste to get valuable parts, which is a safe and easy way to make money.
C. The way uneducated workers deal with old computers does great harm to the
environment and their own health.
D. More and more electronic waste is being wasted and thrown away mainly because
of people's bad habits.
69. What is the purpose of writing the passage?
A. To attract more people's attention to e-waste.
B. To call on people not to throw away e-waste anywhere.
C. To tell people what e-waste is and how to deal with it well.
D. To warn people to break away from the electronic industry.
70. The next paragraph probably concerns _______.
A. how to deal with e-waste properly
B. how to protect ourselves from harm by e-waste
C. how to slow down the development in the electronic industry
D. how to make full use of e-waste
PART FOUR WRITING
SECTION A
Directions: Read the following passage. Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage. Write NO MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
Museums have changed. They are no longer places that one “should〞 go to but to enjoy.
At a science museum in Canada, you can feel your hair stand on end as harmless electricity passes through your body. At the Children’s Museum in New York, you can play an African drum. There are no “Do Not Touch〞 sign in some other museums in the USA. You are encouraged to experience many things in them.
More and more museum directors have realized that people learn best when they can become part of what they are seeing. In many science museums, the visitors are encouraged to touch, listen, operate and experiment so as to discover scientific rules for themselves.
The purpose is not only to provide fun, but also help people feel at home in the world of science. If people don’t understand science, they will be afraid of it; and if they are afraid of science, they will not make the best use of it.
One cause of all these changes is the increase in wealth and spare time. Another cause is that the number of young people grow in the population. Many of them are college students or college graduates. They see things in a new and different way. They want art that they can take part in. The same is true of science and history. The old museums have been changing and the government is encouraging the building of new, modern museums. In the States and Canada, there are more than 6000 museums, twice as many as there were 25 years ago.

SECTION B
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage and the required words limit. Write your answers
on your answer sheet.
Andy rode slowly on his way to school, day-dreaming about the fishing trip that his father had promised him. He was so busy dreaming about all the fish he would catch that he was unaware of everything else around him.
He rode along until a strange sound drew him to the present. He came to a stop and looked curiously up to the heavens. What he saw shocked and terrified him. A huge swarm〔蜂群〕 of bees filled the sky like a black cloud and the buzzing mass seemed to be heading angrily towards him.
With no time to waste, Andy sped off in the opposite direction, riding furiously 〔狂地〕—but without knowing how to escape the swarm. With a rapidly beating heart and his legs pumping furiously, he sped down the rough road. As the bees came closer, his panic increased. Andy knew that he was sensitive to bee stings(蜇). The last sting had landed him in hospital—and that was only one bee sting! He had been forced to stay in bed for two whole days. Suddenly, his father’s words came to him. “When you are in a tight situation, don’t panic. Use your brain and think yo ur way out of it.〞
A week later, when riding home, he could see smoke waving slowly skywards from the chimney of the Nelson family home o n a nearby hill. “Bees don’t like smoke,〞he thought, “They couldn’t get into the house.〞 Just then a swarm of bees appeared. Andy raced towards the Nelson house, but the bees were gaining ground. Andy knew he could not reach the house in time. He estimated that the bees would catch up with him soon.
Suddenly, out of the corner of his eyes, he spotted a small dam used by Mr. Nelson to irrigate his vegetable garden. Off his bike and into the cool water he lived, disappearing below the surface and away from the savage insects. After holding his breath for as long as he could, Andy came up for air and noticed the bees had gone. Dragging himself out of the dam, he struggled up the hilly slope and rang the doorbell. Mrs. Nelson took him inside and rang his mother.
“You’ll really need that fishing break to help you recover,〞 laughed his mother with relief. “Thank goodness you didn’t panic!〞 But Andy did not hear her. He was dreaming once again of the fish he would catch tomorrow.
81. Why did Andy fail to notice the swarm of bees earlier? (no more than 10 words)
82. Why did only one sting made Andy stay in hospital for two days? (no more than 8 words)
83. What made Andy able to avoid the bees a week later? (no more than 10 words)
