One afternoon a few months after Tom and I were married, Max walked into the dining room, where I was looking through my old photos. Max was the son of my husband and his ex-wife.
These months I was learning to let Max come 1 to me on his own. If I moved too quickly, he ran away. If I was 2 , we often ended up playing, laughing, and recently, even sitting together on the sofa with a book.
“Who' s that?” he pointed to one photo.
“My mom. I suppose she is you r 3 Sylvia.”
“Cool. Who is that to me?”
“That was my grandfather. He died a few months ago.”
“Hmm. Too bad he had to die.”
Death is always a painful subject especially for a seven-year-old child who’d lost his mother only two years before. I secretly put away the pictures of dead relatives.
He began to finger through the photos. "Who is that to me?”

“You can call me Mom or Betsy. 6 feels OK for you.”
I waited, expecting a pronouncement of my new 7 .

“When I say Betsy, I mean Mom. Mom s die, you know. I think it's maybe 9 if you’ re just Betsy.”

Characters:
Buck—a dog Judge (法官) Miller—Buck’s owner
Buck did not read the newspapers, or he would know that trouble was coming.
In fact, trouble was on its way for every strong dog with warm long hair. This was because men, going through the Arctic (北极的) darkness, had discovered a yellow metal—gold. And because shipping and transportation (运输) companies were advertising the discovery, thousands of men were rushing into the Northland. These men wanted heavy dogs, with strong muscles (肌肉) for working and thick coats to protect them from the cold.
Buck lived at Judge Miller’s house in the sunny-kissed Santa Clara Valley. There were big stables (马厩), long grape fields, fruit gardens and a big swimming pool. Buck ruled over the whole kingdom. Here he was born and here he had lived the four years of his life. He protected the Judge’s sons and daughters on long midnight or early morning walks. On cold winter nights
he lay at the Judge’s feet in front of the warm library fire. He was king—king over everything, crawled (爬行的), walked, or flew at Judge Miller’s place, including humans.
Buck was this kind of dog in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike pulled men from all over the world into the frozen North. But Buck did not read the newspap ers. He did not know that Manuel, one of gardener’s helpers, was not to be trusted. Manuel loved to gamble (赌博). He believed he could win but he was doomed to failure.
On the night of Manuel’s betrayal (背叛), no one saw him and Buck go off through the fields. Buck imagined it to be a relaxing walk. They arrived at a little train. A man talked with Manuel and money passed between them. Manuel tied a piece of thick rope around Buck’s neck. Buck accepted it quietly. To be sure, it was unwanted, but Buck had lea rned to trust men he knew. However, when the ends of the rope were placed in the stranger’s hands, he barked. Then the rope tightened (收紧) painfully, his tongue hanging out of his mouth. Then his strength disappeared, his eyes grew dim (浑浊), and he knew nothing when the train pulled up. Two men threw him into the baggage car.

17、Lin Hanxing is a 30-year-old who lives in Beijing. She owns just five shirts, two pairs of trousers, four pairs of shoes, three books and a few other things. It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, Lin was one of those people who couldn’t stop buying things. Back then, she had more than 400 pieces of clothes and handbags. But that was before she saw an online challenge in 2014, introduced by Joshua Becker, a writer in the US who was promoting (推动) a minimalist lifestyle. He encouraged people to reduce the number of their belongings (财物) to fewer than 100. Lin decided to give it a try. She threw away 90 percent of her belongings. She also cleared 120 people she never spoke to from her QQ and Wechat. After doing all that, Lin said sh e felt ‘lighter’.
We used to think owning more was the way to lead a rich life. But now many people believe that owning less is rich, perhaps richer.
According to US writer Joel Stillerman, people who are educated and wealthy are more likely to have a minimalist lifestyle. These people are saying, ‘I can afford to have less.’
But leading a minimalist lifestyle doesn’t only mean owning or spending less. Adam Lucacias from a UK research company Euromonitor found young people spend less on belongings, but more on short holidays and visits to the movies.
‘They are looking for a life that is all about culture.’ Alison Angus, the manager of Euromonitor, said.
So perhaps it all comes down to how we define (定义) ‘wealth’. Is wealth in life about buying more and ownin g more, or is it about learning more and experiencing more?

A.Alison Angus. B.Adam Lucacias.

B.I can live a good life by experiencing less and learning more.
C.I can live a good life with necessary belongings and friends.

3.Lin Hanxing’s definition of ‘wealth’ may probably cover __________.
A.Owning fewer friends B.doing more learning
C.Having more holidays D.Chatting less often with peopl
