17693034 Don't have plenty of time for reading? If you are interested in non-fiction books, here are good choices for you.
A Room of One's O w n
This essay by English writer Virginia Woolf is based on her several lectures given to two women's colleges at Cambridge University in 1928.In it, Woolf describes that it's circumstance not talent alone that allows men to be more successful at writing.Women, in other words, spend so much time cooking, cleaning, and tending to their children that they have no time left for art.To write well, therefore, a woman must have “a room of her own”.While on its surface, this essay appears to be only about writing, it is actually about wealth and class, freedom and imprisonment, and the power struggle between sexes.
The Art of War
Written by ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Zi, The Art of War is widely considered to be one of the best books about military strategy(军事战略) in human history.Consisting of 13 chapters, each dealing with a separate aspect about how to fight a war, the book has been translated into many languages and has thousands of editions. For centuries, it has been used to train military leaders for its detailed study of military strategy and effective leadership.
Letter to My Daughter
This book of essays and poems by Maya Angelou, a respectable American poet, is written for “the daughter she never had”—the millions of women, both young and old, who she considers to be her “family”. From the viewpoint of a caring, older relative, this book contains lessons selected from her own life experiences, including the birth of her only child, a son, as well as the development and loss of friendship.
A Brief History of Time
If you're short on time, then why not read about, well, the creation of time? This book, first published in 1998 from brilliant scientist and mathematician Stephen Hawking, explores mind-bending questions about the creation of the universe, including if and when it will end, and if so, how.Despite its heavy subject matter, Hawking addresses these questions in a way that's easy to understand, even for those who know little about physics.

I was delighted to receive a copy of Marie Curie and her Daughters by Shelley Emling through my letter-box a few weeks ago.
Actually science has never really been my “thing”.At school I really struggled with physics and chemistry and was much happier in English Language or History classes. My mind is not structured enough to understand how science works, I'm a bit of a daydreamer and prefer using my imagination rather than learning facts, figures and formulae(公式) .Of course I knew who Marie Curie was, her great achievements, her contribution to science, to medical advances and influence on the world, but other than that, I really had very little idea about her life.
Shelley Emling has based this book on Marie Curie's relationship with her two daughters, Irene and Eve.The book begins after the early death of Pierre Curie, when Marie is left to carry on the work that they started as a couple and to bring up her two small daughters alone.Emling has concentrated her book on the communication between Marie and her daughters. She was not an
overly-protective mother, nor did she hesitate to spend time away from her daughters, yet this did not weaken their relationship.Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.
Marie Curie and her husband made the decision not to profit from their discoveries. It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.
I was very impressed by Emling's writing style—she has told the story of three extraordinary women who were way ahead of their time in an interesting and very readable manner.

24.What is the writer good at?__C__
A.Physics and chemistry.
B.Facts, figures and formulae.
C.English and History.
D.Daydreaming.

由第二段and was much happier in English Language or History classes.

25.What is Marie Curie like in the eyes of Irene and Eve?__C__
A.She makes a pet of them like babies.
B.She avoids staying away from them.
C.She encourages them to build their own characters.
D.She wants to be involved in every area of their life.

Marie was a caring and loving mother, who encouraged her daughters to become individuals, to achieve what they wanted to.

26.Why did Marie Curie tour the States?__D__
A.Because she meant to make herself a famous person.
B.Because she wished to introduce the medical advances to people in the U.S.A.
C.Because she needed money to bring up her two small daughters by herself.
D.Because she decided to continue her work without money made from discoveries.

It was because of this that Marie had to depend on donations to carry out her work, and that she had to carry out tours of the States.

27.The book written by Shelley Emling focuses on __A__.
A.the connection between Marie Curie and her daughters
B.the contributions Marie Curie made to the world
C.the research work of Marie Curie and her husband
D.the decision made by Marie Curie and her husband

A gunman killed two members of a television news crew in the United States earlier this week.Their TV station broadcast the shooting“live” in real time. The shooting shocked many Americans and people around the world.
One US teenager wants to help prevent such attacks.Kai Kloepfer lives in Boulder, Colorado. He has a talent for technology. He has been teaching himself engineering skills since he was a child.Hearing of so many gun attacks, he decided to use his skills to help prevent mass shootings.
The young man's goal was to make a gun that would not work in the hands of a killer. But he knew it would be impossible for him to stop dangerous people from buying guns.So he changed direction. He decided to create a gun designed to prevent accidental shootings. The gun Kai Kloepfer designed only works when unlocked by the fingerprint of the owner, and not by anyone else. The gun only recognizes the touch of its owner.
It took the teenager seven months and over 1,500 hours to create a plastic model of his“smart gun”.He entered his fingerprint handgun in a local science fair and won.His award included a financial prize. He received $ 50,000.The money is to support improvement in gun safety.
Kai Kloepfer is now 18 years old.He has been using the grant money to improve the technology. He says the weapon he designed doesn't change the function of a firearm at all.It just makes it safer. He is now working to add the fingerprint lock technology to a real gun.He says he expects to one day see his“smart gun” for sale next to other firearms.
The young man plans to spend the next year improving his fingerprint handgun. Then he will start college at one of the world's top universities—the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

A.keep it convenient to use

D.avoid being used by others

30.How is the progress of Kai Kloepfer's gun invention?__B__
A.It is being shown in a fair.
B.It is under further research.
C.It will soon come into the market.

根据第五段的“He has been using the grant money to improve the technology”和“He is now working to add the fingerprint lock technology to real gun”可知,他一直在使用这笔奖金来提高技术,并致力于把指纹锁技术运用到真枪中。

17693037 Social networks are a big part of nearly every teenager's life in this day and age. Many teens have QQ, WeChat, or Weibo but little do a lot of teens know that they can be held responsible for everything they post for the rest of their lives.Everything you post online is part of a digital
footprint that can always be traced (追踪) back to you. That includes every post, even every like, comment, favorite and forward that you have ever committed. All pictures you've posted or will post have been stored in a digital database, and it is the companies' right to keep all of these documents that you believe to have been deleted or hidden.
With every post comes a consequence; whether it is good or bad, what you post could be seen by anyone. That is why you have to be very careful of what you decide to post or comment.
If you think you are safe from Servite finding out about one funny comment you made six months ago on a meaningless picture, you are probably wrong.Recently, a senior, Aaron, at Servite learned this lesson the hard way this year.He wrote a series of ugly comments towards Connelly girls on a web page, ignoring potential consequences.
This student, however, did have to face consequences from Servite as he was removed from all of his leadership roles in the school.Surprisingly enough, he fully agreed with his punishment handed down by the administration and fully understood why he was given such severe discipline (处罚) .“When you agree to come to Servite, you are agreeing to defend what Servite stands for” the young man said.“That continues from 8 am to 2 pm.It's at all times.”
So, next time you're about to post something you think could be received as offensive or inappropriate, think twice, or don't press the “Send”.

(2018·四川省南充市第一次高考适应性考试) What will man be like in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now on? We can only make a guess, of course. However, we can be sure that he will greatly differ from what he is today.__36.A__
Let us take an obvious example.Man, even five hundred years ago, was shorter than he is today.__37.D__ Five hundred years is a relatively short period of time, so we can imagine that man will continue to grow taller.Nowadays our eyes are in constant use.In fact, we use them so much that often they become weaker and we have to wear glasses. But over a very long period of time it is likely that man's eyes will grow stronger.
On the other hand, we make less use of our arms and legs.__38.B__ We can't walk farther. At the same time, however, our fingers will grow more sensitive because they are used a great deal in modern life. What about our brain? As time goes on, we shall have to use our brains more and more and eventually we shall need larger ones!__39.E__ Our head, in particular the forehead, will be larger.
Perhaps all this gives the impression that future man will not be a very attractive creature to
look at! This may be true.__40.G__ He will still be a human being with thoughts and emotions similar to our own.
A.For man is slowly changing all the time.
B.As a result, these are likely to grow weaker.
C.Man will live in the earth for a long time.
D.Now on average, man is about three inches taller.
E.This is likely to bring about a physical change, too.
F.What's more, man is likely to have a wonderful life.
G.All in all, in spite of all these changes, future men will still have a lot in common with us.

What will man be like in 5,000 or even 50,000 years from now on? We can only make a guess, of course. However, we can be sure that he will greatly differ from what he is today.

故选A。

D.Now on average, man is about three inches taller.(现在平均人比以前高3英寸。

41.A.tool B.choice
C.chance D.purpose
解析:根据空后一句中的“In the sixth grade,suddenly,there were two choices”可知,此处表示,在五年级,似乎只有唯一的选择(choice) 来让别人记住自己——装酷。

42.A.However B.In addition
C.Therefore D.In fact

43.A.personal B.funny
C.various D.strange

所以选A。

44.A.wrong B.former
C.third D.latter

45.A.terrible B.safe
C.nervous D.interesting

46.A.surprise B.anxiety
C.delight D.expectation

所以选A。

47.A.repeat B.remember
C.compare D.read

48.A.ached B.paled
C.changed D.burned

49.A.even B.still
C.never D.always
解析:根据下文中的“this time had an explosive quality”可知,“我”对第二个问题的回答仍然(still) 是特别的,因此这一次笑声(laughter) 更加强烈。

50.A.laughter B.question
C.air D.class

51.A.nearly B.exactly
C.hardly D.surely
解析:根据空后的“all that I had in mind was the laughter”可知,此处指“我”几乎不能(hardly) 记得后面发生了什么,所以选C。

52.A.request B.message
C.order D.voice
解析:根据下文中的“Guys,cut it out”可知,Michelle Siever的声音(voice) 传来,所以选D。

53.A.crazy B.silent
C.angry D.empty

54.A.announced B.smiled
C.added D.stopped

55.A.talking B.chatting
C.arguing D.sharing

56.A.talked about B.calmed down
C.left behind D.spoke up

speak up(for sb./sth.) “(尤指为……) 说好话,辩护”。

57.A.reminded B.promised
C.showed D.persuaded

58.A.for a while B.finally
C.again and again D.hopefully

所以选A。

59.A.before B.with
C.for D.by

60.A.misses B.needs
C.values D.loves
