We have a(n) 38 at the office by which anybody coming back to India from a foreign country gets chocolates for all the 39 . Naturally the chocolates are finished 40 because everyone loves them and 41 to grab as many as possible. I had noticed that the housekeeping staff 42 in our company never got to 43 even a single chocolate.
Recently, I came back to 44 after a month-long trip from Munich and I’d bought a lot of chocolates for the office staff. I called over 45 of the housekeeping staff members called Babu. I gave him a box of chocolates and told him to distribute it 46 among the housekeeping staff. His face immediately broke into a wide smile and this made me 47 .
But the story doesn’t 48 here. The best part of it all was that Babu actually distributed the chocolates among everyone equally 49 giving extra chocolates to a woman who has a 5-year-old son . It was so 50 for me to see this .
I find it really 51 to understand how we,who have the money to buy chocolates and other goodies, do not even feel like 52 and just think how much we can grab. 53 , Babu, who earns only just about enough to raise his family, was so 54 and did not even keep one extra chocolate for himself.
It made me 55 one simple question: Which is better, having a little less money but being kind and generous or having lots of money but being selfish?

British teenagers look to the stars When their parents were
children, they imagined a future standing in front of a class of pupils or doing the
rounds(巡诊)as a doctor.
But today’s British teenagers, a survey suggests, seem to have set their sights
only on becoming the next Leona Lewis or Wayne Rooney.
Researchers questioned 3, 000 teenagers about their ambitions and
also asked parents about their youthful career hopes.
According to the survey, youngsters dream of a celebrity(明星)
lifestyle, perhaps after finding fame through shows such as the X Factor, and of being actors or sports stars. Copying the likes of Rooney and David Beckham was the top career ambition of today’s teenagers, cited(提起)by 12 percent.
Almost as many, 11 percent, wanted to be pop stars, and the same proportion(比例)dreamed of being actors.
The success of celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Gordon Ramsay is likely to explain why becoming a chef is now the dream of 5 percent, a career ambition which did not figure in the list of 25 years ago.
A quarter of a century back teaching was the top career choice, cited by 15 percent. These days the job is chosen by only 4 percent.
Of the traditional professions, only law has risen in popularity.
The survey also suggests that more girls dream of becoming doctors and boys want careers as astronauts or firefighters.
Child psychologist Laverne Antrobus said the findings reflect toda y’s celebrity culture and warned children against unrealistic dreams.
“Children see footballers, pop stars and actors on TV and their lives look exciting, glamorous(光鲜的)and fun, ”she said. “It is hard for them to realize that they are the end product of a lot of ingredients including talent, determination and years of hard work. New rules will let millions of Americans know where more of their
foods come from. The law is known as COOL—Country of Origin
Labeling(标签).
American Congress first passed the law in 2002. Stores have had
to label seafood by country of origin since 2005. But industry pressure
delayed other requirements until last week.
Products that must now be labeled include fresh fruits and vegetables, muscle meats and some kinds of nuts. But the rules are complex, and many foods are excluded.
For example, organ meats are free to be labeled. So are processed foods, including cooked or smoked foods.
The United States has imported more and more food in recent years to save money and expand choices. Country-of-origin labeling has become more common lately but has still been limited in many stores.
Food safety is one reason why some shoppers pay close attention to where foods came from. For example, when a large number of people recently got sick from salmonella(沙门氏菌), officials blamed peppers from Mexico. Yet the last big food scare involved spinach(菠菜)grown in California. But labeling is also a way for people to know they are getting what they want. Some want to buy local foods or foods from a particular country.
The country-of-origin labeling law gives stores 30 days to correct any violations that are found. Stores and suppliers
that are found to be deliberately violating the law could be fined 1, 000 dollars per violation. Federal inspectors are not to take action to enforce the law for six months to give time for an education campaign.
Some food safety activists say they are generally pleased with the law. They call it a good step that will give people more useful information.

(D)
Imagine a world in which there was suddenly no emotion—a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate. Try to imagine the consequences of such a transformation. People might not be able to stay alive: knowing neither joy nor pleasure, anxiety nor fear, they would be as likely to repeat acts that hurt them as acts that were beneficial. They could not learn: they could not benefit from experience because this emotionless world would lack rewards and punishments. Society would soon
disappear: people would be as likely to harm one another as to provide
help and support. Human relationships would not exist: in a world without friends or enemies, there could be no marriage, affection among companions, or bonds (关系) among members of groups. Society’s economic underpinnings (支柱) would be destroyed: since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them.
In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instruments of our survival and adaptation. Emotions
structure the world for us in important ways. As individuals, we categorize objects on the basis of our emotions. True, we consider the length, shape, size, or texture, but an object’s physical aspects are less important than what it has done or can do to us—hurt us, surprise us, anger us or make us joyful. We also use categorizations colored by emotions in our families, communities, and overall society. Out of our emotional experiences with objects and events comes a social feeling of agreement that certain things and actions are “good” and others are “bad”, and we apply these categories to every aspect of our social life—from what foods we eat and what clothes we
wear to how we keep promises and which people our group will accept. In fact, society uses our emotional reactions and attitudes, such as loyalty morality, pride shame, guilt, fear and greed, in order to maintain itself. It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, and uses the legal penal (刑法的) system to make people afraid to engage in antisocial acts.
71. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?
A. People would not be able to tell the texture of objects.
B. People would not know what was beneficial and what was harmful to them.
C. $10 million is equal to $10 in a world without emotions.
D. There would be full of lies, arguments and violence.
【解析】选B。
细节理解题。
A项第一段未提及。
第一段中“. . . since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, ”并没表达$10 million等于$10的意思,C项是对该句话的曲解。
通过“a world in which human beings could feel no love or happiness, no terror or hate”可知D项是错误答案。
72. It can be inferred from the passage that the economic foundation of society is dependent on ______ .
A. the ability to make money
B. the capacity to work
C. the stimulus to work
D. the categorizations of our emotional experiences
【解析】选C。
推理判断题。
从第一段“since earning $10 million would be no more pleasant than earning $10, there would be no incentive to work. In fact, there would be no incentives of any kind, for as we will see, incentives imply a capacity to enjoy them.”可知人们工作的积极性是需要“incentives = stimulus”来调动的。
73. Emotions are significant for man’s survival and ad aptation because________ .
A. they provide the means by which people view the size or shape of objects
B. they are the basis for the social feeling of agreement by which society is maintained
C. they encourage people to perform dangerous achievements
D. they produce more love than hate among people
【解析】选B。
细节理解题。
人类对事物的形状大小的认知并不来源于情感,所以A项存在错误。
根据第二段末句“It gives high rewards to individuals who perform important tasks such as surgery, makes heroes out of individuals for unusual or dangerous achievements such as flying fighter planes in a war, ”可知是社会利用情感让人们去从事危险事情,而非情感鼓励人类这么去做,C实属偷梁换柱。
D项文中并未表达该意。
74. Why are the emotional aspects of an object more important than its physical aspects?
A. They help society use its members for profit.
B. They encourage us to perform important tasks.
C. They help to perfect the legal and penal system.
D. They help us adapt our behaviors to the world surrounding us.
【解析】选D。
细节理解题。
通过第二段“In such a world, the chances that the human species would survive are next to zero, because emotions are the basic instruments of our survival and adaptation. ”可知情感可以帮助我们适应环境。
75. What is the text mainly about?
A. People could only live in a world with emotions.
B. People would always do bad things in the emotionless world.
C. Emotions are very important in the world.
D. Emotions structure the world for us in important ways.
【解析】选C。
主旨归纳题。
第一段的描述向人们展示没有感情的世界有多么的可怕,第二段进一步说明事物的情感方面比其自然方面要重要得多。
由此可知本文主要讲情感的重要性。

【参考答案】
The poem reminded me of my childhood! Every time I read the poem, the emotions crowded in my mind. The farmers devoted all their lives to the agriculture field. In spite of the hot weather, they insisted on hoeing their fields, letting the sweat keep dripping into the soil.
After reading the poem, I think we should value the life that we have. We are accustomed to enjoying the comfortable life. So sometimes we can’t understand how hard farmers are. As a matter of fact, every grain of our meals comes from hard toil.
Not only should we treasure the food for our meals but also we should study hard. Only in this way can we appreciate the farmers and our parents. Common Progress Please Criticize。
