译林牛津英语9年级中考分类提升之阅读填空系列
A
If you visit the animal shelter(收容所)in Saunas, California, you'll see huge signs that have a picture of a dog and a cat on them. These signs are put in front of the shelter to catch people's attention. The signs make people interested in the shelter and encourage them to visit it and maybe even take a cat or a dog into their homes.
Each year, the Salinas shelter accepts thousands of dogs and cats. The animals are either lost ones or are left by people who can't take care of them. Of all the animals, some of them are taken into new homes. Some others are moved to other shelters. And, unluckily, some cannot be saved because they are too sick or are thought to be dangerous.
Animal shelters provide food, medicine, and safe places for animals. But they are not the best homes. The animals stay in small cage(笼子). The people who work at shelters do their best to care for the animals, but the animals do not always get the attention or exercise they need.
To prevent animals from becoming homeless, pet owners should take good care of their pets. Most pet doctors also suggest people make sure their pets have a special surgery(外科手术). It prevents animals from having more babies. And that reduces the number of homeless animals.

〖答案〗1. thousands of dogs and cats

When I was first in junior high,I knew no one. Most students talked only to people they knew So they left me out of their conversations(对话).I would come home crying because 1 was lonely.Mother asked me what the worst time was and I said that it was at lunchtime.

Your smartphone may seem like the centre of your entertainment, but a Kent State University study shows that too much phone use is taking the fun right out of our spare time.
Researchers watched a group of nearly 500 students and recorded their daily smartphone use. Those who were considered in the “high-use” group experienced more stress during their spare time than the other group.
So what can we do in order to really take advantage of our spare time? We have collected the following activities that also take a few hours to complete, but best part of all, you’ll improve your health in the process(过程).
Whether you’re at home or on holiday, it’s important to disconnect from the Wi-Fi. Walking in nature can do good to your health. As a professional(职业的)traveler. Samantha Brown put it in a recent passage, “ I put my map in my back pocket, put down my phones and take a good, long walk. Just walk
around.”
Go to bed earlier. What can help improve your mood? Extra sleep, naturally. Getting the right amount of sleep is very important to our health and studies show that we don’t get enough of it.
Read a book. And let yourself get lost in a good story. Research shows that reading can reduce stress, keep your brain sharp and can even help you sleep better. Everyone should spend at least 30 minutes reading every day.
Putting pen to paper is a good exercise. Try writing down your thoughts. Writing has a lot of health advantages. Besides, writing down your thoughts may even help clear your mind.
1. How many activities does the writer advise us to do to improve our health?
2. Why did the Kent State University do the study?
3. As a student, which will you spend more time on, smartphones or books when you have free time? Why? 〖答案〗1. Four.
2. To find out whether too much phone use is taking the fun out of one’s spare time.

My father used to work in the city and seldom stayed at home. But he would come back help to harvest rice every year.
One autumn, he promised to help our neighbor, who lost his arms in a traffic accident in 1999, to harvest his rice. After Father harvested our town, his little rice picker broke. What’s worse, he had to return to work the next day because his partner was ill in hospital. It meant that fath er wouldn’t be back in a few days. It now seemed impossible to help out the neighbor.
Father told us that h e wouldn’t let the neighbor’s rice rot(糜烂) in the field. He decided to harvest it by hand without a machine. “If tonight’s weather is clear, I think I can do it.” added my father. In fact, he was rather tired after a day’s harvest work.
After dinner, Father had a short rest and made his way to the field. A full moon was glowing (发光) in the sky and the weather was cold but clear. He spent the whole night keeping his word.
I would never forget the image(画面):Father was cutting rice in the light of the harvest moon. Behind him, row after row of rice stocks(秸秆) stood at attention, showing respect for a man who kept his word.
1 What happened to the neighbor in 1999?
2 How was the writer’s father?
3 Will you keep your promise if you promise somebody something? Why or why not?
〖答案〗1.He lost his arms in a traffic accident.
2.He was a man who kept his word.

Last spring I was walking in a park. In front of me there was a mum and her 3-year-old daughter. The little girl was holding on to a string, which had a balloon at the
other end.
All of a sudden, a sharp gust (一阵风) of wind took the balloon from the little girl. I thought she would scream and cry.
But, no! As the little girl turned to watch her balloon rise to the sky, she cheerfully shouted out, “Wow!”
I didn’t realize it at that moment. But that li ttle girl taught me something.
Later that day, I received a phone call from a person with news of a sudden problem. I almost replied with “Oh no, what should we do?” But remembering that little girl, I found m yself saying: “Wow, that is interesting! How ca n I help you?”
One thing is for sure —life is always going to put us off balance with things we don’t expect. But how we act to them is our choice. We can choose to be discouraged or interested.
No matter what the situation is, a “Wow!” will always beat “Oh, no.”
So next time you meet one of life’s unexpected gusts, remember that little girl and make it a “Wow!” experience. It always works.
1. Where was the little girl?
2. How did the little girl feel when her balloon was blown away?
3. Will you have an active mood when unexpected trouble comes up? Why or why not?
〖答案〗1. She was in a park. 2. She felt cheerful. 3. 略。
