Emily White was born seventeen years ago with so many birth problems in her body. Some of her organs, bones and muscles were out of shape. No one expected her to survive. She did make it but with her strange body figure, everyone could recognize her, even from a distance.
In Emily White's hometown, there was a yearly outdoor performance in the school auditorium(礼堂). It had been performed for so many years and actually had become one of the most important events of the Christmas season for many of the town's people. Many people tried out each year for it but so many were turned away. It could only include the most excellent people in the field.
Emily had a beautiful singing voice. Last year she went to Mrs. Owens — her music teacher to ask to join in the performance. Without letting her sing, Mrs. Owens took a look at Amy's body and said, "Child, you just don't fit. Everyone would stare at you and that would make you uncomfortable. It would make them uncomfortable, too."
Without singing a single note, Emily was sent back through the door of the choral(合唱)room. Hurt and upset, she decided never to try out again. But Mrs. Owens then retired.
This year, there came a new music teacher, Butler. He heard about Emily and suggested that she have a try.
Emily didn't want to be rejected again, so she hesitated a little about it. As Emily struggled, the door was pushed open and Mr. Butler called, "Emily, you're next." Although kind of nervous. Emily did as Mr. Butler told her to do. Mr. Butler sat by the piano to accompany Emily. When Emily finished her testing performance, she thanked Mr. Butler and knew the result would be posted on the door of the choral room the next day.
Emily couldn't sleep that night. She was suffering from the feelings that she didn't fit and the great need to be accepted. By the next morning, her stomach was even in pain because of stress.
Para1:
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room.

Paragraph 1
The next day, Emily nervously glanced at the list on the door of the choral room, She was not rejected this time. Her name was posted at the top of the list. She, Emily White, was chosen to be the leading singer! She would sing alone in the performance. Emily couldn't believe her eyes. There must be some mistake. But Mr Buttler said to her with determined eyes, "Emily, I choose you because you should perform the part — your voice is unusual. Believe in yourself." Greatly encouraged, Emily practiced really hard.
Paragraph 2
Finally, the day of performance came. Standing in front of the line, Emily felt her throat tight and her palms sweating. When the curtain opened up, the eyes of the whole audience fell upon Emily. "Emily White!" Someone whispered. Then, along with the first note of music, Emily began to sing her heart out. Her voice was like a nightingale ringing in the auditorium. Applause! Emily felt so happy and comfortable. She was shining on the stage. Emily White, with so many birth problems in her body, was an angel.

Butler
“Emily White!”有人小声说。
接着,随着音乐的第一个音符,Emily开始放声歌唱。
她的声音像夜莺在礼堂里鸣响。
掌声! Emily感到很高兴和舒适。
她在舞台上光芒四射。
Emily White,尽管她的身体里有那么多的生育问题,但她是一个天使。

Last weekend, I went to Mark’s new house near a forest for a little get-together. After lunch when I was chatting with him and his wife Cody, he asked me, “Hey, Thora, have you ever been to a secret spot?” Before I could even finish saying no, Cody and Mark were already at the door with their jackets on. And the next moment we were heading out into the forest with a camera, a fishing net and a plastic bucket(桶).
We walked through the forest along a path by a small river. Breathing the fresh air, we three talked and laughed all the way.
“Hey! What are you guys doing ?” someone suddenly shouted from behind. Mark and Cody’s eyes immediately widened, and without a word they started running. I had no choice but to follow them, getting my shoes wet and dirty with mud. We probably ran for about 10 minutes before Mark and Cody slowed down. I stopped to catch my breath and asked, “Who was that?”
Mark replied, “The most annoying neighbor ever. There’s no telling what could happen if he caught up with us. He is always making fun of us. I dislike him.” We kept walking on for a few more minutes. Then a beautiful lake appeared before our eyes. “Wow! Amazing!” I shouted and could hardly hold back my excitement. The lake was large and the water was deep and blue, looking so peaceful with tall trees around it.

For an instant they reminded me of newlyweds, but I knew by the age of their kids that they couldn’t possibly be. I puzzled about it for a moment then realized how totally focused I was on the wonderful display of unconditional love not more than an arm’s length away from me. I suddenly felt uncomfortable, as if I was invading something sacred, but was amazed to hear my own voice nervously ask, “Wow! How long have you two been married?
“Married twelve years.” he replied, without breaking his gaze from his lovely wife’s face. “Well, how long have you been away?” I asked. The man finally turned and looked at me, still beaming his joyous smile. “Two whole days!” I was stunned. “I hope my marriage is still that passionate after twelve years!” The man suddenly stopped smiling. He looked me straight in the eye and told me something that left me a different person. “Don’t hope, friend… decide!”

On December 16, 2008, Randy Heiss was hiking in Patagonis, a town near the US-Mexico border when he
noticed there was a red balloon. He walked towards it, and found the balloon’s string was attached to a piece of paper. “Dayami”, it read on one side, in a child’s writing. Heiss turned the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish.
Heiss suspected that a child had tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned his letters, but he wondered whether he could find the girl who had sent this one. It would be difficult, but Heiss had a few clues. About 20 miles to the southwest, was the city of Nogales, Mexico. Based on the blowing wind, he was pretty sure that’s where it came from.
Heiss brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They found that Dayami had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes and art supplies. Heiss then posted about his search on Facebook, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl’s family, but with no success. Heiss worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2008, he sent a private message to Radio XENY, a radio station in Nogales.
The next morning, Heiss got a message from Radio XENY: They had located Dayami, an eight-year-old girl whose parents were killed in a car accident. They would arrange a get-together with Dayami at the radio station. So they bought just about everything on Dayami’s list.
Paragraph 1:
Then the Heisses drove for 45 minutes, crossing the border into Nogales.

She didn’t expect that the wish balloon really did work. What happened was beyond her wildest dream. She couldn’t believe somebody out there did care about her. Paragraph 2:
Ten years later, Heisses received a phone call from Dayami. Heisses was surprised that Dayami should still remember him and asked her how everything was going on with her. She told him in an excited voice that she had been admitted to a famous university in Mexico and she owed a lot to Heisses. I believe that all humans are similar but we are all blind to this idea due to cultures, religions, and appearances that all form wrong ideas separating us as humans.
I recently had to privilege to travel to Africa. This trip allowed me to see a lot more of the world than most students my age. Two years ago, a week after completing my second year in high school I flew to Nairobi, Africa. This day on June 11, 2011 I did not know what to expect.
As a culturally blinded prep school student I stepped off a plane after an exhausting twenty-three hours of sitting. I was immediately exposed to an unknown world. The language as well as skin colors, facial expressions, clothing styles, and the atmosphere changed as a whole.
I was expecting this trip to create huge distinctions between the people of Africa and myself. I learned the total opposite. On the first day I bonded with the school children; I played a soccer game filled with laughter, raced
between schoolhouses until our legs gave out and wouldn’t let us run anymore, and hopped in a jump rope contest with a group of enthusiastic girls. When I managed to escape from the lively children and their exciting games, I attempted to make sense of what I had just experienced. My brain was filled with various thoughts, until a little girl with smooth skin, shaved head, and a torn blue and green sweater walked over and hesitantly grasped my wrist. She inspected my hands and rubbed my fingernails. She let my hands drop and she looked at her own with the same attentiveness. Her eyes rose as she began to evaluate my face. I sat down on the earth so that we were eye level and likely for interaction. She then ran her hands through my curly hair and placed her hands on her own head. Then she looked into my eyes; I looked back into hers. Charmed in the moment, I tickled(挠) her stomach, although we were both a stranger to each other. Immediately the school bell rang, she released a smile and ran towards her classroom.

I watched this adolescent girl as she ran carefree towards her teachers and classmates just as I did when I was in elementary school. For some reason I felt as if I had met this girl before, but I knew this was impossible. After she had inspected me, and compared herself to me I could not stop thinking about our interaction. I wondered why
this so emotional for me, and then I realized, to our surprise we were amazingly similar. The way this child ran, interacted with her classmates, and was so curious about me, a white stranger, made me recall the experience of my own childhood.
This was an eye-opening experience that changed the way I see people nowadays. What was really fascinating to me was the similarity of the people I met, and all their personalities that were alike every single other person I came in contact with during my trip. That is why out of the 6 billion people in the world, I am constantly curious about how similar we all are, and I have sense that we are all incredibly the same, but we do not see this due to cultures and religions as well as appearances that blind us from understanding my belief.
