On a bright, warm July afternoon, Mac Hollan, a primary school teacher, was cycling from his home to Alaska with his friends. One of his friends had stopped to make a bicycle repair, but they had encouraged Mac to carry on, and they would catch up with him soon. As Mac pedaled (骑行) along alone, he thought fondly of his wife and two young daughters at home. He hoped to show them this beautiful place someday.
Then Mac heard quick and loud breathing behind him. “Man, that's a big dog!” he thought. But when he looked to the side, he saw instantly that it wasn't a dog at all, but a wolf, quickly catching up with him.
Mac's heart jumped. He found out his can of bear spray. With one hand on the bars, he fired the spray at the wolf. A bright red cloud enveloped the animal, and to Mac's relief, it fell back, shaking its head. But a minute later, it was by his side again. Then it attacked the back of Mac's bike, tearing open his tent bag. He fired at the wolf a second time, and again, it fell back only to quickly restart the chase(追赶)。
Mac was pedaling hard now. He waved and yelled at passing cars but was careful not to show down. He saw a steep uphill climb before him. He knew that once he hit the hill, he'd be easy caught up and the wolf's teeth would be tearing into his flesh.
At this moment, Paul and Beeky were driving their car on their way to Alaska. They didn't think much of it when they saw two cyclists repairing their bike on the side of the road. A bit later, they spotted what they, too, assumed was a dog running alongside a man on a bike. As they got closer, they realized that the dog was a wolf. Mac heard a large vehicle behind him. He pulled in front of it as the wolf was catching up fast, just a dozen yards away now.

I always prided myself on being a wise shopper and having a good nose for bargains. So when I came across a sporting goods store with a sign "Going Out of Business Sale" I marched into the crowded store. Up and down the aisles (通道), I wandered, humming to myself and enjoying the energy and excitement of a sale.
All of a sudden, there, at the back of the store sat acanoe (轻舟) exactly like my husband's dream Supremo Numero-Uno,whose picture had been stuck on the bathroom mirror for years. My heart beat wildly. I pushed my way through the crowds, and nearly fell into the canoe looking for the price tag. There it was, with the manufacturer's suggested price at $6,750 plus tax crossed out and a handwritten TO CLEAR $750 AS IS. Must be a mistake. $6000 off? Salesman. I had to talk to a salesman. I spotted a young fellow with a "Hi. I'm Mathew". "Mathew. Tell me about this El Supremo canoe. What's wrong with it? Why is it only $750?"
"Oh. There's nothing wrong with it. It's brand new. We're closing the store. It's on clearance like everything else. I'll go check." A few minutes later he came back and said, "I'm sorry ma'am. Someone made a mistake on the sale tag. It should be $4,750 for the whole package."
I felt tears well up in my eyes. "Oh well", I said sadly. "Of course, it was too good to be true. This is exactly like my husband's dreamboat. I guess I started to dream myself when I saw that price tag. He's going to be 62 years old Friday. Had to retire early for his health. It's been hard on just the pension but the stubborn old fool has been saving $10 every week for years to buy one just like this. I promise I won't buy anything, but it's just an old man's silly dream, you know. Always said he wanted to fish in a canoe after he retired," my voice lowered and I turned and walked away.

I encountered God the summer I was five. My father had finally grown too sick to get out of bed, so the heat and nervous tension in the air inside the house made it impossible to breathe. I would escape by squeezing under the front porch. All manner of creatures lived there, but I mostly ignored them, with one exception — a little frog
who, every time I crawled (爬行) under the porch, stared at me with great, golden eyes.
In late June, the frog finally hopped (跳跃) toward my arm and stared at me, demanding eye contact. Once he had my attention, he opened his wide mouth and said, "Hello, Sophie."
I should have been shocked, but for some reason, I wasn't. Perhaps at five years old, I was more receptive to something against the laws of nature. At any rate, I was not shocked that a frog could speak. I had a more pressing question.
"How do you know my name?"
The frog blinked slowly. "I know everything. I am God."
I spoke, "You can't be God. You're too small."
He extended a long, webbed finger and was pointing to the edge of the porch's shadow — to the spot where my mother had tried to grow flowers there for years. She had stopped trying when my father's condition worsened.
"Look there," commanded the frog, and I stared as a beautiful white flower blossomed as if stretching its limbs after a long sleep. In my five years, I had never seen anything so splendid.
God and I became good friends that summer. I spent every day under the porch, talking to him.
Sometimes I asked God questions. Sometimes he answered. Once, I asked him where Heaven was.
"Heaven," he said, "is where I live."
In August, my father's illness had progressed to the point that I was sent to my aunt's house in Virginia. I told God I would be back soon, and then waited in Virginia for my father to get better.

Once, when I was a teenager my father and I were standing in line to buy tickets for the circus. Finally there was only one family between us and the ticket counter.
This family made a big impression on me. There were eight children, all probably under the age of twelve. You
could tell they didn't have a lot of money. Their clothes were not expensive, but they were clean, the children were well-behaved, all of them standing in line, two-by-two behind their parents, holding hands. They were excitedly talking about the clowns, elephants and other acts they would see that night with their brothers or sisters in a low voice. One could sense they had never been to the circus before. It promised to be a highlight of their young lives.
The father and mother were at the head of the pack, standing proud as they could be. The mother was holding her husband s hand, looking up at him as if to say, "You are my knight in shining armor." He was smiling and responding in pride, looking back at her as if to say "You got that right". The ticket lady asked the father how many tickets he wanted. He proudly responded "please let me buy eight children's tickets and two adult tickets so I can take my family to the circus.
The ticket lady gave the price. The man's wife let go of his hand, lowered her head and her lips began to shake. The father leaned a little closer and asked, "How much did you say?" The ticket lady again told him the price. The man obviously didn't have enough money.
How was he supposed to turn and tell his eight children that he didn't have enough money to take them to the circus? Actually we were not wealthy in any sense, so I understand how the kids would feel. I felt sorry for them. 注意:

"Every cloud has a silver lining, "It drives me crazy when Mom says nonsense (废话) like that.
I'd barely had time to arrange myself in the passenger seat, my foot already blow up like a balloon when she came out with it, exactly like I knew she would. First, she patted my leg. Then she just couldn't help herself, "Every cloud has a silver lining, you know sweetheart." "Mom I appreciate the thought, but I' m not ready to look on the bright side of this." We hadn't even left the school parking lot yet.
On the farthest side of the field I could see my teammates doing sprints training, Coach Zito striding back toward them. He'd mercifully helped me to the car in silence. Unlike Mom, he knew when it was best to say nothing.
As Mom started the engine, I imagined my teammates cooling down without me while they listened to Coach Zito's pep talk. And next Thursday, they would go to practice without me, and the Thursday after that. When I had fallen and twisted my ankle, I'd cried from the pain, but I was crying out of self-pity in the car. Hours and hours of training, and then this. I told myself there was a glimmer(微光)of hope that everything would um out okay, and that
I'd make it to the track meet next month, but I knew it was just that: a glimmer. The tears fell hot and fast Mom
gave me a weak smile. "It'll be okay, Case." I suspected this was another version of the silver-lining thing, but I felt so miserable that I let it pass.
We finally arrived at the hospital. Doctor V an gently moved my ankle around a bit before carefully lowering it I nervously asked how long it would be before I could run." Four weeks maybe, possibly five," he replied," and even then, you'll need to take it easy for a while. Is that possible?" he asked with a smile.

Paragraph 2:
One month later, I made my appearance on the field.
After study for hours, I went outside and up to the roof nearby for a break and watched people swimming in the sea. It was a sunny day—a blue, cloudless sky over a calm sea. But then, as I looked in the distance. I discovered a series of three or four big waves heading towards the shore. I'd seen these mini-tsunamis (小型海啸)many times before. They were heading at speed in the direction of the swimming area. Most people knew to look out for them, but from the screams that started coming from the beach, I could tell someone was in trouble.
Without thinking, I ran down into the street, holding my bodyboard (冲浪板)on the way and shouted at a stranger to call the coastguard(海岸警卫). My neighbor Tom had heard the screaming as well and was also outside with his bodyboard, so together we rushed to the steps that led down to the sea.
Once we got closer, we discovered the waves had pulled a boy and a girl into the open sea. I knew that the nearest boat would take at least 30 minutes to reach us. I wasn't used to this sort of emergency—I'd never been trained as a lifeguard—but I didn't think twice about trying to save them.
I suppose in a way I wanted to impress everyone; at 19, a deal like that can seem like a good opportunity to show off.
Tom and I dived into the water and it took us 10 minutes to get to them. When we finally reached them, they were almost lifeless with only their heads coming in and out of the water. We could tell they were still alive from their small breaths but it was clear they wouldn't have been able to stay there much longer. I held the boy and
pulled him over my board. Tom then moved the girl onto his board.
Paragraph 1:
We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out.
Paragraph 2:
That night, word came from the hospital that the two kids were in good condition.

1. The car abruptly stopped in front of him. Mac jumped off his bicycle and rushed to the door of the car. But before Mac could open the door, the wolf had caught up and jumped to attack. Luckily, the magic spray saved Mac a third time。
Seeing the wolf back off,Paul quickly unlocked the door, and the frightened man climbed into the car in no time, shutting the door behind him heavily。
Bechy looked out of the back window and saw the wolf standing over Mac's bicycle as if it were a kill。
Soon after,the animal ran off。
A few minutes later, the other two cyclists arrived. They were shocked at what they saw and joined Paul. One of Mac's friends picked out some raw meat and threw it to the wolf. Satisfied with what he got, the wolf ran into the woods. Mac thanked Paul and Becky,“How grateful I am that you stopped to save me and I owe it to you that I'm still alive.” As Mac got injured, the three men had to give up the rest of their journey and returned home.(170 words)

That's about all I have," "Well then, you just have your husband sitting at the front gate on Friday morning around 10 o'clock so he can be there when my Dad and I come to unload his new canoe. We'll
even put a bow on it for his birthday." I started to cry. My old hand shook as I wrote out my cheque.
"Ma'am. There's something you should know. This store was my Grandpa's and the canoe had been ordered by him. He always promised to retire one day. Said he wanted to spend time relaxing and out fishing in a canoe." He swallowed hard. "My Grandpa died, sudden-like, just last week. He was only 68 years old. I think he'd be mighty happy that your husband will get this canoe. You just have to make sure he uses it a lot, okay? Promise?" "I promise," I said as I dashed off to look for my dear sweet husband.

3. Paragraph 1:
Six months later, I came back home for my father's funeral. Death is very confusing for a child. I didn't understand what it meant to die; all I knew was that my father had been lying in his bed and receiving medical treatment for his illness when I left, and now when I came back, he was nowhere to be found. He must be hiding somewhere, I was sure; people couldn't just disappear, especially without saying good-bye. Though my mother told me he had "passed on", I thought she meant he'd traveled to another town.
Paragraph 2:
Suddenly, an idea crossed my mind that my father might travel to Heaven. I knew exactly how to find my father. I ran to the front porch. However, I had grown during those six months in Virginia, and I could no longer squeeze into the porch's shadows. I sat in front of the porch all afternoon, calling for someone to answer me. No
voice came. No father returned from the dead. No frog jumped out of its hiding spot. I was too big to talk to God, so I started to cry.

I didn't understand what it meant to die 运用了宾语从句;all I knew was that my father had been lying in his bed and receiving medical treatment for his illness when I left, and now when I came back, he was nowhere to be found. Though my mother told me he had "passed on", I thought she meant he'd traveled to another town. I sat in front of the porch all afternoon, calling for someone to answer me.
4. Paragraph 1
Then he picked it up and tapped the man on the shoulder and said, "Excuse me, sir, this fell out of your pocket.' The man turned around and saw the money. He knew what was going on, he looked straight into my dad's eyes, took my dad's hand in both of his, squeezed tightly onto the $20 bill, and with his lip shaking and a tear running down his cheek, he replied, "Thank you, thank you, sir. This really means a lot to me and my family." Paragraph 2
We didn't go to the circus that night, when I asked dad why he did so, Dad said, "My child, it was a desperate, heartbreaking and embarrassing situation for a father. Surely he wasn't begging for a handout, but he reminded me of my father, when I was young." He paused for a while, as if wandering in his memory. "We should appreciate what we have obtained from life and seize every opportunity to help others. We didn't go to the circus tonight, but we didn't go without. Now, who wants an ice cream?"
Seeing what was going on, my dad put his hand in his pocket, pulled out a $20 bill and dropped it on the ground.
That day my father and I went to our car and drove home without any tickets.

5. There is always a picture in my mind. A boy, who is in worn clothes, sat at a wooden table with a pile of books on it. A weak ray of light came in through a small hole in the wall and he was absorbed in his reading.
This is a well-known story from an ancient Chinese idiom. The boy, being poor, couldn't afford even a candle, so he made a hole in the wall to “steal" light from his neighbor's house to read at night. The moral of the story is: spare no effort to acquire knowledge and never get discouraged easily no matter how difficult the situation may be.
Of course, things are totally different today. It is not the story itself but what is reflected in the story that counts. Hard work pays off. We should take pains to improve ourselves through learning and get prepared for the future.

6. Last Monday I was walking on the campus when I heard two students saying that Mrs. Wang, who had been teaching us English for two years, would retire the next month.
I returned to the classroom and shared the news with my classmates. To express our thanks to Mrs. Wang for his patient teaching, we agreed on a celebration after a heated discussion.
After school we began to make preparations. I went to the flower shop to buy a bunch of flowers, representing our love and respect for our dear teacher. One of my classmates made a PPT, which included some photos recording the touching moments we spent together.
On Tuesday morning, when Mrs. Wang came into the classroom, all of us stood up and I presented the flowers to her, with the background showing "Thank you Mrs. Wang! May you be happy every day." With tears in her eyes, Mrs. Wang was greatly moved by what we did! She said her feelings were beyond words.
But for this experience, I would have never realized the importance of cherishing every moment in our daily life.

8. We discussed pushing them back to the shore, but we were too far out. We had to wait, trying to keep them on the bodyboards. Patting their faces to wake them up, we continuously told them to be strong. After what seemed a century, I fell extremely exhausted while swimming hard to keep myself afloat. Casting a look at Tom. I could tell he was also apparently worn-out. Looking at the vast sea, I fell a sense of fear surging through my whole body. Salt stinging my eyes, I could hardly know how long I could hold on. But I still shouted in my head: focus. In sheer desperation, I finally caught sight of some boats with lifeguards on them heading towards us in the distance. Thank you, Lord. Quite soon, I fell strong arms pull me out of the sea onto the board.
That night, word came from the hospital that the two kids were in good condition. Sighing a relief, I couldn't stop thinking about the whole event. I knew they would have died if they had been in the sea for my longer. Obviously I had done a big deal which is surely a good opportunity to show off. 1 had expected to experience some sort of sense of wellbeing or greatness, but none of that came. Rather than feel like a hero believe anyone who could swim would have done the same thing.
