13816/72 Heading A5B Effervescent tablets comprising (a) a pharmaceutically active ingredient and (b) an effervescent mixture comprising (i) an alkali metal carbonate or bicarbonate and (ii) an aliphatic polycarboxylic acid or an alkali metal salt of such an acid are produced by a process comprising (1) moistening one of the ingredients of the effervescent mixture before addition of the other or moistening the whole effervescent mixture with up to 1% of water based on the weight of carbonate or bicarbonate and (2) preparing granules containing not more than 0.25 weight % of water by subjecting the moist mixture to a series of discrete drying steps each in a hot air fluidized bed at a temperature not exceeding 60‹C and a humidity not exceeding 5 grams of water per cubic metre. The pharmaceutically active ingredient may be aspirin, paracetamol or vitamin C. The alkali metal bicarbonate may be sodium or potassium bicarbonate. The carboxylic acid or salt may be citric acid or monosodium citrate. The moistening water may include ethanol or acetone. The composition may also include sodium saccharin salt, sodium benzoate or glycocolt.
