Case study Summary
Fran Hayden Joins Dairy Engineering
The background to this case study is Fran graduate from University of Waikato with the a Bachelor of Management Studies, and she get a offer from Dairy Engineing Ltd after interview. She accepts the offer, and she goes to the MIS part. However she goes to the workshop without her boss’s permission, therefore her boss make Fran work difficult and Fran feel unsatisfaction to the position. As a result she finished in the company in a short tine.
The main issue of this case is that after the workshop Fran have a negative relationship to her boss Peter. In detail, the chief of accountant Rob provide a big opportunity that let Fran go to a management workshop on performance measurement. However, Fran’s boss Peter was away on two weeks leave, and Fran go to the workshop without her boss’s perm ission. When Fran’s boss Peter come back and understand it, Peter feel furious and make Fran’s work more difficult. As a result, the relationship between her and Peter become worse, Fran feel unsatisfaction to her job and consider to transferred. Consequently, Fran ask for transferred and finished in the company.
There is a theory that can be applied in this case. Fran’s job satisfaction is at a low level which have a negative effect on Fran’s work behaviour and lead to negative relationship with her boss Peter (McShane & Travaglione, 2008, p125). In this case, Fran experience a boss is‘ moody’ and not well liked by his staff. Based on the case, after Fran go to the workshop without Peter’s permission, Peter treat Fran in another way, and try to force Fran out of work. Peter even told to his staff Janet that ‘ Fran has far too much work to catch up on’ (McShane & Travaglione, 2008, p127), therefore
all of the factors make Fran feel unsatisfied to the position. It is widely agreed that Fran is dissatisfied to her supervisor Peter. According to the theory Job Satisfaction, it is indicated that ‘job satisfaction affects many of the individual behaviours’ (McShane & Travaglione, 2008, p117), for example loyalty is one of the way that employees respond to dissatisfaction. As a result Fran ask help from Rob and Vernon many times, and it is obvious that Fran’s loyalty for Peter is reducing, moreover Fran’s responses
to dissatisfaction is transferring and quitting. This is the reason that Fran would finish her job in a short time.
It is recommended that Fran should pay more attention to communication to Peter. This is because communication in a organization is very important. If Fran have a better communication with her boss Peter, they can understand what is they need, and Fran can get feedback about her work from Peter, and based on the feedback to improve work (McShane & Travaglione, 2008, p326). It also can lead to a better relationship with her boss. Besides, act as a new graduate Fran is inexperienced, she should be more patience, loyalty and acknowledge her mistakes. So that the employer may consider that Fran is worth to be developed.
