(Text 1)
M: Hey, Joanne. What's up? Are you heading to the beach, too?
W: I'm trying to get there as fast as I can. I need to deposit some money at the bank and mail some letters at the post office. But first, I've really got to find a ladies' room!
(Text 2)
W: Have you looked in the mirror today?
M: Uh, not since I woke up this morning ... Why? Did I forget to do my hair or something?
W: Well, let's just say that green ties and pink shirts don't really mix ...
(Text 3)
M: I'm starving! What have you got to eat around here?
W: Um, not much. I really wasn't expecting anyone over, so ...
M: All you have in here is some salad and one of those health drinks that only girls drink ...
W: Look. I don't show up at your door without calling and criticize your food, do I?
(Text 4)
W: Do you have any idea what time it is now? Have you ever heard your phone?
M: I'm sorry. But my phone ran out of power. I got back here as fast as I could because I knew you'd be worried.
(Text 5)
W: Hi, James! It's me, Diane. Oh, I'm so glad I caught you. I was just talking to Drake, and ...
M: I'm sorry. But I think you dialed the wrong number. My name is Daniel.
(Text 6)
M: What's the matter with you? You look miserable.
W: It's us.
M: What do you mean “us”?
W: Well, we used to talk to each other before we were married. Remember?
M: What do you mean? We're talking now, aren't we?
W: Oh, yes, but we used to do so much together.
M: We still go to the cinema together, don't we?
W: Yes, but we used to go out for walks together. Remember?
M: Oh, I can remember.
W: And we used to do silly things, like running barefoot through the park.
M: Yes. I remember. I used to catch terrible colds.
W: But we never used to argue. You used to think I was wonderful. Once ... Where are you going?
M: Back to live with my parents. That's something else we used to do before we were married. Remember?
(Text 7)
M: Can you see how close we are on the map?
W: It looks like we're pretty close, but these smartphone maps are hard to read.
M: Yeah, I always prefer to look at a paper map. I think I still have some in the pocket of the right door, if you wanna grab one ...
W: No, I'd probably be even worse at that. Uh-oh, I think you were supposed to turn left back there.
M: You mean that you were supposed to tell me to turn left back there?
W: Yeah, I'm sorry. I don't have one of these kinds of phones, so I'm afraid I don't really know what I'm doing. Do you want to pull over and take a look?
M:No. It's okay. Just push that little button on the side of the phone to turn on the sound. That will allow us to hear the directions out loud.
(Text 8)
M: Hello, Student Job Center. Can I help you?
W: Yes, I am looking for a part-time job. Do you have anything available at the moment?
M: Ah, yes. Your name and address?

M: OK, do you have any skills? Typing, languages, that sort of thing?
W: Yes, I speak Chinese and I can also speak some Japanese.
M: Right, let's see what is available. There is a position for an Office Assistant at the language center.
W: That sounds interesting.
M: It's for three days a week and the duty is to deal with inquiries and answer the phone.
W: I am sure I can handle it without problem.
M:Great. I will inform the director of the language center and you can start next week.
(Text 9)
W: Brett, can I ask you a question about your dog?
M: Sure. What's up?
W: Well, I have to get my little Ferguson some medicine.
M: Oh, is everything all right?
W: Yes, of course. It's not like he's sick or anything. I give him medicine every month as part of his regular care, so he doesn't get any diseases from insects or other dogs.
M: Oh, right. I do that for Fargo, too.
W: Yeah. That was what I was going to ask you about. Where do you buy your dog's medicine? I asked my vet, and she told me the prices. I almost dropped dead right there!
M: Yeah. Unfortunately, most special pet stores sell them at fixed prices that are set by the companies that make them. You can usually find discounts of ten or fifteen percent for a lot of those stores, though.
W: Well, that's not a huge help for something that's two hundred dollars per year! Isn't there any other way?
M: Well, you can order some medicines from websites that are based in other countries where the prices are lower.
(Text 10)
This is the Lakewood Public Address System. This is not a test like the one we had last week. I repeat, this is not a test. The Western Hill Fire is spreading toward Lakewood much quicker than we had expected. Currently, we expect the fire to come within twenty miles of Lakewood by six o'clock this evening. We are therefore requiring all residents to leave this area immediately.
Springfield to the north, Point Cabina Station to the east, and Galveston to the south are all in the safe zone. It will take less than thirty minutes to drive to any of these towns. Take as many things as you can fit in your car, but do not delay. We have orders from the state police to make sure that the entire town of Lakewood is empty by five o'clock today. You have plenty of time to get all your family members, pets, and belongings together, so there is no need to panic. Stay calm, but get started as soon as possible.

If you're a high school student, you may tend to measure your self-worth based on your popularity and status. You may feel depressed or disappointed if you have a difficult time fitting in or if you lack the confidence to talk to others. If you want others to like you, you'll need to have a healthy understanding of how people think, what appeals to them and how you can gain their approval. There are four tips on how to be popular in high school. And if you are popular with your classmates, you can get many benefits from them.
You must be yourself in order to gain any real
popularity in high school. While imitation is the
sincerest form of flattery (奉承), copying another's
style and personality will have a negative effect on
your popularity. If you're not comfortable enough to be yourself 100 percent of the time, others won't feel comfortable around you. If you establish your own style and personality and stay true to yourself,
popularity will soon follow.
Make yourself approachable to appeal to others and be popular in high school. People love to be around others who are confident and ready to have a good time. Hold your head up high, keep your shoulders back, and smile as you walk with an air of confidence to instantly attract others and increase your popularity.
Be friendly and kind to everyone you meet. It's not enough to gain the approval of the other popular students in your school. In order to gain real popularity, you'll need to be kind and polite to everyone you meet. Make an effort to talk to your classmates regardless of their popularity or economic status and try to develop friendships with them. The more people you appeal to, the more popular you'll become.
Involve yourself in school activities that interest you. You can be popular in high school if you play an active role in your school's extracurricular activities (课外活动). The more you participate in group activities, the more popular you'll become.

America is a mobile society. Friendships between Americans can be close and real, yet disappear soon if situations change. Neither side feels hurt by this. Both may exchange Christmas greetings for a year or two, perhaps a few letters for a while — then no more. If the same two people meet again by chance, even years later, they pick up the friendship. This can be quite difficult for us Chinese to understand, because friendships between us flower more slowly but then may become lifelong feelings, extending (延伸) sometimes deeply into both families.
Americans are ready to receive us foreigners
at their homes, share their holidays, and their home
life. They will enjoy welcoming us and be pleased
if we accept their hospitality (好客) easily.
Another difficult point for us Chinese to understand Americans is that although they include us warmly in their personal everyday lives, they don't show their politeness to us if it requires a great deal of time. This is usually the opposite of the practice in our country where we may be generous_with_our_time. Sometimes, we, as hosts, will appear at the airport even in the middle of the night to meet a friend. We may take days
off to act as guides to our foreign friends. The Americans, however, express their welcome usually at homes, but truly can not manage the time to do a great deal with a visitor outside their daily routine. They will probably expect us to get ourselves from the airport to our own hotel by bus. And they expect that we will phone them from there. Once we arrive at their homes, the welcome will be full, warm and real. We will find ourselves treated hospitably.
For the Americans, it is often considered more friendly to invite a friend to their homes than to go to restaurants, except for purely business matters. So accept their hospitality at home!

On July 10-12, 2017, a huge iceberg (冰山) named A-68 broke free from Antarctica's Larsen C Ice Shelf. The crack (裂痕) that led to the separation was observable in 1963. However, the crack remained inactive for decades before suddenly spreading northwards and widening by 18 miles between 2011 and 2015 and then an additional 13 miles in 2016.
Iceberg separation is not a natural part of a glacier's (冰川) life cycle but a result of global warming. However, the separation of A-68 is receiving a lot of attention due to its size. Measuring 5,800 square kilometers, the A-68 has reduced the Larsen C Ice Shelf area by more than 12%.
“The interesting thing is what happens next, how the remaining ice shelf responds,” said Kelly Brunt, who has studied the effects of the warming climate on the Larsen C Ice Shelf since 2015. “Many people may ask,‘Will the ice shelf weaken? Or will it fall down, like its neighbors Larsen A and B? Will the glaciers behind the ice shelf speed up and have a direct contribution to sea level rise?’ I think answers may be not that terrible.”
Ice shelves, which border 75% of the Antarctic Peninsula, form from snow that became ice thousands of years ago. They are found where glaciers meet the ocean and the weather is cold enough to keep the ice frozen. The icy structures are natural barriers against the water melting from glaciers, which can lead to rising sea levels.
The Larsen Ice Shelf once consists of four parts: Larsen A (the smallest), Larsen B, Larsen C (the largest) and Larsen D. While scientists
will continue to monitor A-68 and its parent, many believe it'll take several years before Larsen C breaks down further. “The remaining 90% of the ice shelf continues to be held in place by two points,” said Chris Shuman, a glaciologist. “So I just don't see any signs that thi s event will lead to the falling down of the Larsen C Ice Shelf. But we will be watching closely for signs of further changes.”
A.Its effect was terrible.
B.It was about global warming.
C.Its size was very huge.
D.It means a glacier's life cycle.
解析:选C细节理解题。
从第一段的“On July 10 — 12, 2017, a huge iceberg (冰山) named A-68 ...”和第二段的“However the separation of A-68 is receiving a lot of attention due to its size.”可知,冰山A-68脱离拉森C冰架,它的块头之大引起了广泛关注。
33.What is Kelly Brunt's attitude towards the A-68 iceberg separation?
A.Positive. B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested. D.Worried.
解析:选A观点态度题。
从第三段Kelly Brunt所说的“I think answers may be not that terrible”可知,她对于冰山A-68脱离拉森C冰架这一现象持乐观的态度。
34.Why are icy structures so important according to Paragraph 4?
A.They help keep the weather cool.
B.They help control the sea levels.
C.They make water turn into the glaciers.
D.They are necessary for scientists' research.
解析:选B细节理解题。
从第四段的“The icy structures are natural barriers against the water melting from glaciers, which can lead to rising sea levels.”可知,这些冰川非常重要,因为它们可以控制海平面的上升。
35.Chris Shuman thought that the A-68 iceberg separation would ________.
A.influence the wildlife there
B.never change the icy structures
C.cause many further changes
D.have little influence on Larsen C Ice Shelf
解析:选D推理判断题。
从Chris Shuman所说的话可知,他认为冰山A-68脱离拉森C冰架并不会带来什么影响。
