Theatre reflects the values of the civilization out of which it grows. The following are the types of theatre performances an ancient Roman might have witnessed then.
Fescennine Verse
Fescennine Verse was a pioneer of Roman comedy. Ironic and improvisational(即兴的), it was used mainly at festivals or weddings, and as invective. With early native Italian funny dialogues in Latin verse, it was thought to have combined with a tradition of performances by masked dancers and musicians from Etruria.
Fabula Atellana
Fabula Atellana relied on common characters, masks, direct humor, and simple plots. They were performed by actors improvising. Fabula Atellana came from the Oscan city of Atella. There were 4 main types of characters: the braggart, the greedy blockhead, the clever hunchback and the stupid old man, like modern Punch and Judy shows.
Fabula Togata
Named for the clothing symbolic of the Roman people Fabula Togata had various subtypes. One was the Fabula Tabernaria, named for the tavern(酒馆)where the comedy’s preferred characters, lowlifes, might be found. One describing more middle-class types, and continuing the Roman clothing theme, was the Fabula Trabeata.
Fabula Praetexta
Fabula Praetexta is the name for Roman tragedies on Roman themes, Roman history or current politics. Fabula Praetexta was less popular than tragedies on Greek themes. During the Golden Age of drama in the Middle Republic, there were four great Roman writers of tragedy, Naevius, Ennius, Pacuvius, and Accius. Of their surviving tragedies, 90 titles remain.
All the performances above began as a translation of Greek forms, even to the extent of their being performed in Greek costume.

Two years ago, I decided to study at theUniversityofSt. Edwardsin the city ofAustin,Texas. When I was on my research to find the perfect place to study in, I considered many aspects: a safe place, a city where there were companies devoted to marketing or technology, a place where speaking Spanish and English was an advantage and a school where I could learn about digital strategies (数字策略). After comparing and evaluating many cities and universities. I finally decided onAustin.
Since I arrived inAustin,Texas. I had been living inside the university where I had a private room and shared common areas with more students. University life was not very different from the life inMexicoand classes weresemblableand the way of socializing too. However, in theUnited States, the classes were more practical and teachers encouraged you to be self-responsible and complete your tasks.
The classes that I was taking were related to social media, digital marketing and advertising. I was very excited to be able to study technology-related courses.
What I liked most about the experience was being able to live with students from many places, which allowed me to learn from other cultures and to share mine with other students. Also, international student services usually organized events and tours that helped me to get to know the city and the school.
I certainly think that studying abroad is a beneficial experience. It makes us capable of understanding cultural differences and accepting diversity. Personally, I would suggest that you first determine what your goals are by going abroad, research the opportunities and lifestyle, evaluate your universities, and finally decide on the one where you feel more comfortable, connecting with your values and way of seeing life.

When you think of the icy Arctic Ocean, do you picture cold blue waters, on which float (漂浮) icebergs home to animals and fish not seen elsewhere on the planet? Think again, or rather add 300 billion pieces of plastic (塑料) to your picture. That's the amount of plastic that scientists believe is floating around the Arctic Ocean. Most of the plastic is in the area to the east of Greenland and north of Scandinavia.
Where did it come from? After all, the lands near the Arctic are not really full of people. It turns out that ocean currents are carrying plastic thrown into the ocean all the way to the Arctic. An ocean current is an unending movement of sea water from one point to another. It is caused by several things including heat from the Sun, wind and movement of the Earth.
Many of these plastic pieces seem to have travelled for years before reaching the Arctic. This was worked out by scientists studying the plastic problem after they observed the condition of the pieces. While much plastic floats on top of the water, a lot also may be on the sea floor.
Plastic has been widely used for 60 years on Earth and our careless throwing of plastic things is slowly turning the once perfectly clean Arctic into a dangerous place. Unlike food waste and plant waste, plastic doesn't break down so easily. In fact the United States Environment Protection Organization reports that “every bit of plastic ever made still exists”.
What's the effect? Seabirds, sea turtles and other ocean creatures could get hurt and die when they accidentallyswallowplastic. Plastic waste affects fishing, affecting people who earn money through fishing. Plastics can let out dangerous poisons (毒物) into the water. These may be swallowed by fish, and when these fish are caught and eaten by people or bigger animals, they could get poisoned too!
8. What can we learn from the passage?
A. The Arctic Ocean is heavily polluted.
B. The plastic is mostlyin the area in the east of Greenland.
C. An ocean current is just caused by the movement of the earth.
D. Much more plastic floats on top of the water.
9. Which of the following doesn't contribute to the plastic ocean?
A. Humans throw away plastic things at will.
B. Ocean currents carry plastic things everywhere.
C. Plastic can let out harmful things into the water.
D. Plastic is hard to break down.
10. What does the underlined word “swallow” in the last Paragraph mean?
A. Break down.
B. Take in.
C. Accept.
D. Touch.
11. What's the best title of the text?
A. Are Men to Blame for Plastic Ocean?
B. Arctic Ocean and Its Future!
C. Is Plastic Harmful?
D. Arctic Ocean or Plastic Ocean?

Teenagers from low-income families in particular are more likely than their middle-class peers(同龄人)to do less well in schoolwork and to drop out of school. Studies have shown, however, that a positive attitude towards schoolwork and the support and encouragement from their parents can help at-risk youngsters to overcome the economic barriersand lack of resources they face. Most of the evidence about the effects of parental involvement (参与)comes from research on mothers. Little is known, however, about how teenagers experience their fathers’ warmth and the beliefs and behavior that are most affected by it.
This new study is part of a large one focusing on low-income families conducted in four middle schools in the southwestern United States. Researchers asked 183 sixth-graders about how optimistic and motivated they were about their school work, and how they experienced their fathers' warmth. The students' maths and language arts grades were also gained. The research team took into account the influence that mothers have on their children’s well-being in their analyses.
Their findings show how fathers can support their teenagers in ways that result in greater optimism and higher achievement at school. “Low-income fathers affect their teenagers’ beliefs about themselves and their
future, and these beliefs influence their achievement by increasing their determination to complete school tasks, “says Dr, Marie-Anne.
These positive effects extend to both sons and daughters, although in different ways. Experiencing their fathers’ warmth first influences daughters’sense of optimism, and thenspills overinto their feeling more determined and certain about their academic abilities. This in turn leads to better maths grades. There is a more direct link between their fathers, love and boys' belief in their ability to succeed in academy.
12. What is more likely to happen to teenagers from low-income families?
A. They will be more determined to struggle.
B. They will have fewer happy things to share.
C. They will fail in their studies and quit school.
D. They will receive less love from their parents.
13. How is the new research different from the previous ones?
A. It only researches families in the north of America.
B. It only studies low-education families in the world.
C. It combines questionnaire data and students, grades.
D. It mainly focuses on the effects of fathers' involvement.
14. What can we know about fathers' warmth?
A. It is less effective than that of mothers.
B. It affects girls and boys in different ways.
C. It mainly applies to girls rather than boys.
D. It has a more direct effect on girls thanon boys.
15. Which of the following best explains "spills over" underlined in the last paragraph?
A. Spreads.
B. Changes.
C. Bursts.
D. Checks.

I took the Harvard Summer School program in my vacation. During my stay there, I spent many time studying in the main library Widener. I enjoyed myself in the ocean of knowledge, either doing research for my papers or read special edition books. The library, that is named after its donor Harry Widener, stands right next the Emerson building of philosophy. Opening a pair of heavy yet elegant metal door, I was immediately bathed in warm light. I wandered around the library, fascinating to find one treasure after other.
The library is a amazing place. Only if when one visits the library can he fully experience the academic atmosphere. For me, the library as well as the courses explain Harvard’s place as the home of devoted scholars.
