选择性必修其次册UNIT 1 SCIENCE AND SCIENTISTS Ⅰ.阅读理解Jose Hernandez made his dream of becoming an astronaut a reality and he did so despite unbelievable difficulties.“I was working in a field near Stockton, and I heard on my radio that Franklin Chang-Diaz had been selected for the Astronaut Corps,”said Jose, who was a senior in high school at the time.“I was already interested in science and engineering,”Jose remembered.“But that was the moment I said,‘I want to fly in space.’”As one of four children in a migrant(移民)farming family from Mexico,Jose—who didn’t learn English until he was 12 years old—spent much of his childhood traveling with his family from Mexico to southern California each March, then working northward to the Stockton area by November, picking strawberries and cucumbers at farms along the route. They would then return to Mexico for Christmas and start the cycle all over again in the spring.“Some kids might think it would be fun to travel like that,”Jose laughed.“But we had to work.”After graduating from high school,Jose was admitted into the University of the Pacific. In 1987,he accepted a full-time job with Lawrence National Laboratory. In 2001,Jose joined the Johnson Space Centre, where he came face-to-face with Franklin Chang-Diaz.“We actually had common experiences—a similar upbringing, the same language issues. That built up my confidence.Any barriers that existed,he had already overcome them,”Jose smiled.“Now it’s my turn!”“NASA rejected me not once, not twice, not three times but 11 times. It wasn’t until the 12th time that I got selected,”he said.Jose was selected as part of the 19th class of astronauts in 2004.He circled the globe 217 times but remains a down to Earth guy. Jose Hernandez received the 2016 National Hispanic Hero Award and he continueshis long history in the field of engineering and space.1.What made Jose determined to be an astronaut?A.The influence of Astronaut Corps.B.The success of Franklin Chang-Diaz.C.His interest in science and engineering.D.The experience of working in the field.2.What can we learn about Jose as a child?A.He did much farm work.B.He traveled a lot for fun.C.He hated learning English.D.He obeyed his family in everything.3.How did Jose feel when he met Franklin Chang-Diaz personally?A.Inspired.B.Valued.C.Relaxed.D.Puzzled.4.What can be a suitable title for the text?A.Climb over BarriersB.Reach for the StarsC.Work the Hard WayD.Learn from Your PastPeople who regularly sleep for six hours or less each night in middle age are more likely to develop dementia (痴呆) than those who routinely manage seven hours, according to a major study into the disease.Researchers found a 30% greater risk of dementia in those who during their 50s,60s and 70s consistently had a short night’s sleep, regardless of other risk factors such as heart condition and poor mental health.Sabia,an author of the study at the University of Paris and her colleagues analyzed survey data from University College London’s Whitehall study, which launched in 1985 and followed the health and lifestyles of more than 10,000 Britishvolunteers. The French team focused on nearly 8,000 participants who self-reported their sleep patterns.During 25 years of follow-up,521 participants developed dementia, with most diagnosed in their late 70s.Writing in Nature Communications, the scientists described how those who routinely got six hours of sleep or less each night in their 50s and 60s were 30% more likely to develop dementia than those who typically managed seven hours. The study does not prove that sleeping too little causes dementia, since sleep loss itself may be one of the earliest symptoms of the disease. But some scientists believe the results strengthen evidence that continuous poor sleep may at least contribute to the disease. The first pathological changes that lead to dementia occur one to two decades before the disease becomes obvious,as sticky proteins called amyloid build up in the brain. When the 1985 Whitehall study first assessed the sleep of volunteers who later developed dementia, this process had probably not started. This meant that if they were sleeping too little,it was unlikely to have been caused by dementia-related brain changes.“It strengthens the evidence that poor sleep in middle age could cause or worsen dementia in later life,”said Dr.Liz Coulthard,a consultant senior lecturer in dementia neurology.“It makes sense to take measures to improve sleep such as going outside during daylight hours to help maintain the natural rhythms that promote good sleep, avoiding too much alcohol or caffeine, particularly before bed,and finding a bedtime routine that works for you.”5.What risk factor for dementia does the passage focus on?A.Sleep loss.B.Age.C.Poor mental health.D.Heart condition.6.How did French scientists get the research findings?A.By making a comparison.B.By monitoring sleep patterns.C.By interviewing British volunteers.D.By analyzing previous survey data.7.In what tone do the scientists talk about the research?A.Casual.B.Doubtful.C.Negative.D.Cautious.8.What is the purpose of the last paragraph?A.To give examples.B.To collect proofs.C.To offer suggestions.D.To present arguments.Ⅱ.完形填空It was just a I remember looking into her classroom wishing I was her student. Jenny created a safe place where we could be whatever we wanted to be in that moment. My parents told me I could start school when I was 4. Though, when I turned 4 in the spring, I couldn’t understand why I had to wait until September. For as long as I can remember, I’ve wanted to be a teacher. When I graduated, I couldn’t wait to invite Jenny to my classroom. She arrived one day, and I saw joy on my students’ faces singing the same songs I sang with her as a child. As a new teacher, I marveled at how she connected with children. For years, Jenny volunteered in my classroom.Over the years we have shared in each other’s ups and downs. Sh e asks me for updates about my family and friends, and she tells me about hers.I am here for her now as the time to sell her house is near. I bring up boxes from her basement. The Swedish furniture company’s “future-living” research lab in Copenhagen is conducting a survey to understand what people want when it comes to smart furniture.AI is now walking into more aspect s of people’s daily lives. Self-driving cars are just around the corner, and AI robots can play and beat the best players of strategy games. As smart home technologies have become more ubiquitous, products ranging from smart electrical outlets (插座) to smar t smoke alarms are flooding the market. Therefore, it’s not surprising that Ikea would be moving in the same direction.Exactly why people would want their sofa or bed frame to speak to then, track their daily movements or offer help is not yet clear. Thou gh Ikea’s the new survey doesn’t directly answer that question, it does provide a hint of what people would feel comfortable with. Most participants wanted a more human-like form of virtual (虚拟的) assistants, as opposed to one that is more robotic. In terms of the ideal gender (性别) of the assistants, the most popularchoice was neither male nor female. Few wanted a religious form of AI.Just as with human friends, most wanted AI friends that were like them, affirming their own worldview. They wanted an AI assistant that was reasonably intelligent-that could collect data to predict what a person wanted before he or she asked, and that could prevent someone from making mistakes. This is not the first time that Ikea has set foot in the field or futuristic technologies. In addition to wireless charging tables and chainless bikes that never rust, the furniture giant has also pictured smart kitchens that can cook the best meal. To decide on how intelligent you want your next sofa or bookshelf to be, you can take Ike a’s survey online.46.The survey carried out by Ikea aims to ________.A. know peoples need for smart furnitureB. understand future lifestyleC. promote the company’s smart furnitureD. answer people’s questions47.What does the underlined word “ubiquitous” in Paragraph 2 mean?A. Smart sofas that can speak to you.B. Smart beds that can track your daily movements.C. Wireless charging car.D. Rustless bikes without chains. For generations, we’ve spent the first third of o ur lives acquiring the college degrees weneed to find jobs. These degrees are the stamps on our professional passports that pave the way for the remaining two-thirds of our journey. However, the future of work won’t be about college degrees, it’ll be abou t job skills.According to the World Economic Forum, over one billion jobs, almost one-third of all jobs worldwide, are likely to be transformed by technology in the next decade. We’ve already seen this happen. Think of the apps you use to shop, track orders and simply stay informed. The stores need to keep them up and running at all hours, day after day, all year round, meaning they need those who can analyze and secure customer data.In these and other similar situations, people are the organizing force making sure technology works the way we want it to. This means a quick rise in new kinds of digital jobs. According to the Forum’s Jobs of Tomorrow report, there’ll be a rapid influx of roles at the forefront of the data and AI economy, as well as new roles in engineering, cloud computing and product development. These jobs need talent with relevant skills, and importantly these skills can be learnt even by those without college degrees.Shifting our focus from degrees to skills will mean transitioning (过渡) to always-on skills-based education and employment organizations that acknowledge not just certification but fitness-for-job and employment as outcomes. In recent years, several companies have focused on continuous learning for the workforce — the trend will become stronger. When it comes to skills, employers look for more than just technical skills. Companies want people with an eye for detail, creative problem-solving skills, a collaborative mindset and an ability to handle complex issues. These also are skills that can be learnt. Anyhow, lifelong learners with ever relevant skills will be in greater demand in the workplace. 51.What is the function of Paragraph 1?A. To propose a definition.B. To present an argument.C. To give an example.D. To make a comparison.52.How does technology influence the jobs?A. It calls for higher demands for degrees.B. It makes many jobs less challenging.C. It reduces their dependence on degrees.D. It connects them with degrees closely.53.What does the underlined word “influx” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A. Increase.B. Recovery.C. Decline.D. Change.54.What will future employers value most concerning their staff?A. Their traditional technical skills.B. Their continuous learning abilities.C. Their certification-based education.D. Their desire to start their own business.55.What might be the best title for the text?A. Skills Are Different From DegreesB. Degrees Will Be More CompetitiveC. Degrees Will Shape the Future of WorkD. Muc h to her surprise, it turned out to be perfect. She said. “When we went out to our first circle and the kids began counting in French and performing the steps they had just learned, my heart melted.”Aesha continues to do whatever she can to help kids learn ballet. bookreport范文120字英文回答:Book Report: "To Kill a Mockingbird""To Kill a Mockingbird" is a classic novel written by Harper Lee. It is set in the 1930s in a small town in Alabama, USA. The story is narrated by Scout Finch, a young girl who lives with her older brother Jem and their father Atticus, a lawyer. The book explores themes of racial injustice, prejudice, and the loss of innocence. One of the main storylines revolves around Atticus defending Tom Robinson, a black man accused of raping a white woman. Through the trial, Lee exposes the deep-rooted racism and injustice prevalent in society at that time.Scout's character development is also a significant aspect of the book. She starts off as an innocent andcurious girl but gradually learns about the harsh realities of the world. Her interactions with Boo Radley, a mysterious neighbor, teach her important life lessons about empathy and understanding. One of my favorite parts of the book is when Scout dresses up as a ham for her school's Halloween pageant. This scene is both humorous and heartwarming, as Scout's innocence shines through despite the racial tensions surrounding her.Overall, "To Kill a Mockingbird" is a thought-provoking and powerful novel that addresses important social issues. This article aims to delve into the captivating storyline, highlight the historical significance of the novel, and discuss its enduring literary value. The novel begins in the year 1900, during the Boxer Rebellion, a violent uprising against foreigners and Christian converts in China. Against this backdrop, we are introduced to the prominent Chen family, consisting of patriarch Chen Kai-shek, his wife Chou Ling, and their six children. The story follows their trials and tribulations over several decades, spanning two world wars, the Chinese Civil War, and the turbulent aftermath. One of the central themes of the novel is the clash between tradition and modernity. While she initially embraces Western ideals, she eventually realizes the importance of her Chinese heritage and the need to reconcile both worlds. Her transformation serves as a metaphor for China's struggle to find its identity amidst the tumultuous changes of the early 20th century.Moment in Peking also sheds light on the plight of women during this period. From Chou Ling, the strong-willed matriarch, to the young women of the Chen family, the novel explores the restrictions and expectations placed on women in both traditional and modern society. 谁的书的英语作文

谁的书的英语作文

谁的书的英语作文Whose Book Is This?In the bustling city of New York, a small bookstore nestledin the heart of the town was the place where I found myself one sunny afternoon. The store was a treasure trove of knowledge, with shelves upon shelves filled with books of all genres. As I wandered through the aisles, a particular book caught my eye. It was a well-worn copy of "To Kill a Mockingbird" by Harper Lee, with its cover slightly faded and pages yellowed with age.I picked it up, intrigued by the book's history. The spine was creased, and the pages were dog-eared, a testament to the many times it had been read. It was clear that this book had been loved by its previous owner. The question that lingered in my mind was, "Whose book is this?"As I flipped through the pages, I found a bookmark tucked between the chapters. It was a simple piece of paper with a handwritten note. The note read, "To the next reader, may you find as much joy in this story as I have." The handwriting was elegant and fluid, suggesting that the owner was someone who took great care in their writing.I continued to browse the book, and on the inside cover, I discovered a name written in the same elegant script: "Eleanor." It was a name that evoked a sense of grace andsophistication. I couldn't help but wonder about Eleanor. What was her story? How had this book impacted her life?"To Kill a Mockingbird" is a classic novel that deals with themes of racial injustice and moral growth. The protagonist, Scout Finch, learns valuable lessons about empathy and standing up for what is right. I imagined Eleanor readingthis book, perhaps at a time when she needed to be reminded of these important values. As I stood there, holding the book, I felt a connection to Eleanor. It was as if through the pages of this book, we were sharing a moment. I decided to purchase the book, not justfor the story it contained, but for the story it represented.I left the bookstore that day with a newfound appreciationfor the power of literature. Books are more than just words on pages; they are vessels of human experience, connecting us to the lives of others. And as I walked away, I couldn't help but think about the next person who would pick up this book, and what they would make of the story of Eleanor's book.。

Over in Texas,Starship,a similarly capable but wildly different rocket being developed by SpaceX,also in preparation to launch on its first orbital test ually, each rocket will be deserted after a single use,its components degraded to junk on the seafloor or adrift in space. But Starship is instead built for endurance, landing back on the ground for rapid reuse, which has already dramatically lowered the expense of reaching space. As big and bold as the SLS may be,experts say that it pales in comparison with what Starship could achieve. "Starship holds the promise of transforming the solar system in a way we can't really appreciate," says Alan Stem, "It completely changes the game.(1)Which of the following added to the uncertainty of JWST's operation? ___A.JWST had to be unfolded on the ground.B.The launching technology was limited.C.JWST had to be unfolded in space.D.The launching cost was high.(2)What is an advantage of SLS? ___A.It's efficiency.B.It's capacity.C.It's range.D.It's speed.(3)What do we know about Starship in Paragraph 4? ___A.It will be recycled in space.B.It is not available for launching.C.It has reduced the cost of reaching space.D.It will be abandoned after a single use.(4)What's the experts' attitude towards the future of Starship? ___A.Hopeful.B.Worried.C.Doubtful.D.Satisfied.15.(填空题,12.5分)Self-disciplined people are not all outstanding people.(1)___ .Some of them read every day. Some of them never run late. The real difference between an elite(精英)person and an ordinary person is that an elite person can manage his or her time well.(2)___ . A Book Report of Moment in Peking 1: IntroductionMoment in Peking is a historical novel originally written in English by the Chinese American author Lin Yutang. He was a Chinese American writer and inventor. His father was a Christian minister. His informal but polished style in both Chinese and English made him one of the most influential writers of his generation, and his compilations and translations of classic Chinese texts into English were bestsellers in the West. Lin studied for his bachelor's degree at Saint John's University in Shanghai, and then received a half-scholarship to continue study for a doctoral degree at Harvard University. He left Harvard early however, moving to France and eventually to Germany, where he completed his requirements for a doctoral degree at the University of Leipzig. From 1923 to 1926 he taught English literature at Peking University. Dr. Lin was very active in the popularization of classical Chinese literature in the West, as well as the general Chinese attitude towards life. Many of his words represent an attempt to bridge the cultural gap between the East and the West. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature several times in the 1970s. He left us a great spiritual wealth, such as My Country and My People, The Importance of Living, Between Tears and Laughter, The Importance of Understanding, The Chinese Theory of Art, and the novels Moment in Peking and The Vermillion Gate.2: Plot summaryThe novel covers the turbulent events in China from 1900 to 1938, including the Boxer Uprising, the Republican Revolution of 1911, the Warlord Era, the rise of nationalism and communism, and the origins of the Sino-Japanese War of 1937-1945. It is divided into three parts: The Daughter of a Taoist, Tragedy in the Garden, The Song of Autumn. It deals mainly with three rich and powerful families in Peking, the Yao, Tseng and New, their prosperity and downfall. Its plot is plainer than its TV version. The story begins when the protagonist, Yao Mulan, is still a young girl. While traveling with her family, Mulan is lost in the turbulence; she is taken by a boxerwoman who intends to sell her. Later, Mulan is saved by the Tseng family. Also in their home, she meets Mannia, her swore sister and Sunya who later become her husband. Afterwards, the story shifts to when Mulan is all grown up. Mulan is an extremely intelligent, gentle, and responsible young lady, admired by many others. As a child, her father encouraged Mulan to explore unusual interests, such as reading carapace-bone-script and singing Chinese opera. Mannia marries Pingya, who is the eldest son of Tseng family. But only one week later, Pingya died of sickness. Then is Mulan’ brother Tijeng, a spoiled boy, after a struggle with his family for his love with his maid, died in accident after his mistress committed suicide. Also Mrs. Tseng wants Mulan to marry her son Sunya. However, Mulan loves Kung Lifu, a scholar who admires Mulan's intelligence and kind hear and this love last for her whole life. Although dissatisfied, she marries Sunya. And her sister Mochow marries Lifu. The second son of Tseng family, Chinya marries Suyun, the daughter of the New family.Soon, they all have children except Suyun. As the political situation changing, their lives changes as well. Mannia adopts a son, Suyun and Chinya divorce and Chinya marries Dimfragnance again. As they become older, a new generation grows up. Mulan’ little brother Afei falls in love with her cousin Redjade, a sensitive girl that commits suicide later. Afei marries a Manchu girl Paofen. Other young boys and girls also get married. Old generation die one by one, Mulan’s daughter is shot when she is in demonstration. Her only son enlists in the army; Mochow’s son enlists as well. All these families are declining in the unstable situation. Their lives and thoughts are changing with the war.3: CommentsThis novel is very long, so I have to choose only several points which touch me most to express my feelingThe first person is Mulan, the intelligent, considerate, kind, generous and brave lady. She is a heroine and almost perfect. I admire her knowledge and her frankness. Unlike Mannia, who is always timid and restrained, Mulan dares to sing opera, climb the mountains and go to the theater which are all seem to be improper for women at that time. The most impressive thing she does is her action of rescuing Lifu. After useless action, she directly goes to the headquarters alone. Risking her life and chastity, she gets Lifu out by arguing with the commander who is attracted by her beauty and intelligence. Her courage shocked everybody, including her husband. I am also surprised by her. She is really a heroine but still owns female characters. She is the model of women no matter in the past or at present. The second one touched me is Mr. Yao, a Taoist. His words always carry weight. Some of his words even have a life-long effect on his children. Besides, his attitude towards money is also amazing. Her gives great amount of dowry to his daughters and he is always generous in helping others. His free medicine to passers and his kindness toward his servants are indisputably precious, not only in that age, but also in nowadays. If the rich and the powerful in our society can be so kind and generous toward the poor, our society will be as harmonious as our government expecting. The third one is Redjade, the girl commits suicide by drowning herself in the pond. In fact, she is just another Daiyu. She is the most beautiful and intelligent girl of her generation. She and Afei love each other, but because of old tradition, their love is restrained. However, her sensitiveness and her deep love always make her anxious. I don’t know what is in her mind when she commits suicide, but I know she dies with her blesses to Afei. When she dies, my tears roll down, what a pity! A girl as smart, beautiful and pure like this leaves the world forever. But on the other hand, I tell myself, she donates herself to her love, and when she dies, she can be happier than live. But there are still people I don’t like. The first one is Mannia. She is beautiful, good mannered, but in my point of view, she is not an integrated human. She has lost herself in the process of restraining herself. Pinya loves her, but she seldom shows her feeling to him although she is also deeply in love with him. When Pinya dies, as a couple of lovers, they have onlyshared a week sweet days. Besides, she is always as timid as a mouse, she never protests anything, no matter whether it is proper or not. I think these are the reasons why she is not as impressive as other girls although she lives longer and also beautiful. The second one I dislike is Suyun, who comes from the rich and powerful New family. Although she has the similar background with Mulan, her behavior is rather disappointing. She envies Mulan’dowry and Tseng family’s favors towards her. She holds the ambition of controling the Tseng family and always attributes her failure to others. What’s worse, she looks down upon Mannia and her mother, which makes Mulan very angry. Heaven is fair, she abandon herself into her so-called freedom, and finally ruins herself. The only thing she does right is her contribution to Taiyu’s mission of traitor murdering. In fact, even nowadays, there are many girls addicted to their so-called modern life. I think Suyun’case should be a warning to these persons. The most disgusting man is New Huaiyu. His notorious behavior is even beyond words. He is always boasting as if he is the chief of government. He abandons his wife and sons for a sing-song girl, and it is also him who carries out the revenge to Lifu. The most shameless thing he does is that in order to get the promotion, he even presents his concubine to his boss, General Wu. So it is also natural when he finally becomes a traitor for he only cares money and power and owns no conscience at all. This kind of people can still be seen in our society, shameless and extremely selfish. What we need to do is to keep ourselves away from these persons and avoid being such kind of person.4: Conclusion. This novel is just a novel, but things I get from it are many. It gives me a lesson of how to live as a human. I have learned that we should always be loyal to our heart and conscience, and only by following our feelings, can we be free. Also, it has taught me that we should always alert to the immoral things and be a human both in appearance and heart.。
